Tread Perilously's winter Patreon request month continues with an episode Mrs. Davis called "Zwei Sie Piel mit Seitung Sie Wirtschaftung." Evading her seemingly German captors, Simone learns from Mrs. Davis that she must seek the Holy Grail. But Wiley and his resistance believe the quest is just to prove Simone will be a good custodian in the algorithm's data center. Which, of course, he wants her to do so they can destroy the source of Mrs. Davis. Meanwhile, Simone confronts more of her past as the machine tries to push her toward the mission. Wait, is Wiley in on it too? Erik gets confused about Justin's hot take on star Betty Gilpin. Justin thanks the Patrons for introducing him to yet another secret show. He also finds a surprising respite from modern life. The pair get lost in Las Vegas despite Mrs. Davis taking place in Reno. A wild (but subdued) David Arquette appears. Erik recalls one funny and surreal thing to emerge from the Los Angeles wildfires. Justin explains why hits to the liver are so intense. At some point, Erik starts to worry that the show stole his brain. "Zhe Germans" leads to something surprising and Erik pitches Glen Powell for an unlikely reboot.

But along the way, they find themselves caught up in a brewing war between the federal government and a violent Mormon militia. A gruff guide (Taylor Kitsch) might be of some help, but the land is rife with violent factions with competing claims to the blood-soaked soil.Subscribe to Pop Culture Happy Hour Plus at plus.npr.org/happyhour Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

“One of the things that I really wanted to focus on, and I felt it immediately after meeting Lina the housewife in Indiana [played by Betty Gilpin in the show], whose husband no longer wanted to kiss her on the mouth, I felt like this woman was as important as the Queen of England, as important as Napoleon. I felt her dreams and fears are just as universal as someone who has defeated an army and the only reason we're not hearing about her is because we have these sorts of rules in place for what possesses historical significance. And I don't really think that that's necessarily true,” says Lisa Taddeo, author of the book Three Women, on which her new TV show is based. In today's episode, we speak to Lisa Taddeo, creator of the show Three Women that stars Shailene Woodley, Betty Gilpin, DeWanda Wise and Gabrielle Creevy as “ordinary” women searching for their sexual identity and fulfillment in disparate and surprising ways. The show is an intimate, often stark portrayal of forbidden female desire and the consequences of that desire – both good and bad. We also talk about writing the “female gaze” into the scripts, filming with prosthetic penises, the power the book Twilight has on teenage girls, and the uncanny way our mothers influence our own sexuality. “My mother made up her face every morning, even when she wasn't going to leave the house. Who is she? My father sees her before she puts on her face as they say, so it's not for him. Nobody is coming to the door today, so it's not for them. It's certainly not for me, because I see her without makeup when she washes it off at night. So, who is it for, you know? And that was a question I had but didn't really know how to frame,” Taddeo says. To hear more about the groundbreaking show Three Women that's airing on Starz, listen to the podcast. Trigger warning: contains mentions of sexual explicit material, sexual assault and trauma.
Richard Connell's 1924 short story, "The Most Dangerous Game," continues to haunt and inspire filmmakers nearly a century later. Its chilling premise of a wealthy sportsman hunting humans for sport has resonated through decades of cinema, influencing countless horror and thriller narratives. Join Kyle and his subjects, Pete, Kynan, and Tommy, as they embark on a thrilling exploration of this enduring tale and its impact on modern film. This episode of "Sitting in the Dark" focuses on three distinct cinematic interpretations of the "man hunting man" theme, each offering a unique perspective on the source material. The discussion begins with "The Hunt" (2020), a big-budget action thriller starring Betty Gilpin and Hilary Swank. The hosts dissect the film's controversial reception, its exploration (or lack thereof) of class warfare and political commentary, and the effectiveness of its fast-paced, often brutal action sequences. They debate whether the film's slick Hollywood production enhances or detracts from its core message.Next, the group turns to "Get Duked!", a British horror-comedy that subverts expectations with its unique rhythm and youthful energy. The hosts praise the film's performances, its exploration of class dynamics, and its ability to make the vast Scottish Highlands feel terrifying. They also highlight the surprising subplot involving a local DJ and his unexpected audience. Finally, the discussion shifts to "Run Sweetheart Run," a film that tackles the horrors of being a woman in a world of toxic masculinity. The hosts commend the movie's refusal to be voyeuristic in its depiction of violence against women, while debating the effectiveness of its supernatural elements. They also explore the film's themes of privilege, survival, and the societal constraints faced by women.Throughout the conversation, Kyle and his co-hosts offer insightful analysis and personal reflections on the enduring appeal of the "hunting humans" narrative. They examine how these films tackle issues of class, gender, and power dynamics while delivering thrills and scares. The episode serves as a thought-provoking exploration of how a nearly century-old story continues to shape and inspire modern horror cinema.Film SundriesRead The Most Dangerous Game by Richard ConnellWatch the movies discussed:The Hunt: Apple • Amazon • JustWatchGet Duked: Apple • Amazon • JustWatchRun Sweetheart Run: Apple • Amazon • JustWatch (00:00) - Welcome to Sitting in the Dark (03:46) - The Most Dangerous Game (08:21) - The Hunt (26:50) - Get Duked (41:39) - Run Sweetheart Run (01:11:17) - Coming Attractions Learn how to support our show and The Next Reel's family of film podcasts by becoming a member. In this episode, we meet pop auteur/singer-songwriter Kate Nash. Kate Nash has just released her brand new record - her first in a little bit - on Kill Rock Stars, entitled 9 Sad Symphonies. In this chat, Kate and I discuss her new record at length, especially what went into creating it and some of the underlying themes across its songs, such as mental health and wellness, depression, and love. We touch on her early material, such as her hit debut record Made of Bricks (which spawned successful singles like "Mouthwash" and "Foundations") and how her relationship to these songs has changed over time. We also talk the early MySpace days that helped give rise to her career, and why she has such a fondness for that era of the music business. And of course we talk about GLOW, the great Netflix series she starred in alongside Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin, and more. We talk about what that show meant (and means) to her, and how sad we both are that it got unceremoniously canceled after three seasons. Thanks for listening!
