Send us Fan MailA time portal opens on a soccer field, a future soldier somehow addresses the whole stadium without a mic, and the world immediately agrees to a draft that sends regular people into an alien war with barely any training. That's the kind of logic we can't let go, so we put The Tomorrow War (2021) on the table and ask what happened to the “streaming blockbuster” era where huge movies drop on Prime Video and vanish from everyone's brain by Monday. We walk through what works and what collapses: the video game structure, the unclear mission goals, the action geography that keeps getting fuzzier, and the time travel movie rules that change whenever the script needs a shortcut. We also get specific about casting and emotion, including why Chris Pratt's approach doesn't sell the family story, why Betty Gilpin deserved more to do, and how J.K. Simmons shows up and immediately makes the movie feel more alive. And yes, we give Sam Richardson his flowers because he threads the needle of being funny without breaking the tone. From alien design to the toxin plotline to the government decisions that make no sense, we keep pitching the cleaner, meaner sci fi version hiding inside the premise, including the ending we thought they were building toward. We wrap with what we're watching next and our next pick, Mercy, because apparently we're doing a Chris Pratt double feature whether anyone asked for it or not.Subscribe, share the show with a movie nerd friend, and leave a review if you want more deep dives into forgotten sci fi action movies. In this episode recorded live on May 8 at the American Society of Cinematographers Clubhouse in Los Angeles, director Jennifer Arnold speaks with three of the creators behind Netflix's American Primeval: director of photography Jacques Jouffret, ASC, makeup department head Howard Berger and sound designer Wylie Stateman. The limited series follows the battle for control of the American West in 1857 through the eyes of a mother (Betty Gilpin) and son, on the run with the help of a steely mountain man (Taylor Kitsch). “Brutal, dirty and grimy,” Jouffert says, is what director Peter Berg wanted for the 19th century Western, and the three artisans share how they delivered, shooting in changeable weather and light at 10,000 feet, creating authentic indigenous looks and developing a distinct sonic signature for cold wind.
Actor Betty Gilpin talks about taking over for Cole Escola as the lead of the hit Broadway farce “Oh, Mary!” which follows the exploits of Mary Todd Lincoln, left alone in the White House to dream of being a cabaret performer, while her husband Abe is away tending to the men on the front lines of the Civil War.

Tread Perilously's winter Patreon request month continues with an episode Mrs. Davis called "Zwei Sie Piel mit Seitung Sie Wirtschaftung." Evading her seemingly German captors, Simone learns from Mrs. Davis that she must seek the Holy Grail. But Wiley and his resistance believe the quest is just to prove Simone will be a good custodian in the algorithm's data center. Which, of course, he wants her to do so they can destroy the source of Mrs. Davis. Meanwhile, Simone confronts more of her past as the machine tries to push her toward the mission. Wait, is Wiley in on it too? Erik gets confused about Justin's hot take on star Betty Gilpin. Justin thanks the Patrons for introducing him to yet another secret show. He also finds a surprising respite from modern life. The pair get lost in Las Vegas despite Mrs. Davis taking place in Reno. A wild (but subdued) David Arquette appears. Erik recalls one funny and surreal thing to emerge from the Los Angeles wildfires. Justin explains why hits to the liver are so intense. At some point, Erik starts to worry that the show stole his brain. "Zhe Germans" leads to something surprising and Erik pitches Glen Powell for an unlikely reboot.
In Netflix's gritty, brutal Western series American Primeval, Betty Gilpin plays a woman determined to get herself and her son across the frontier. But along the way, they find themselves caught up in a brewing war between the federal government and a violent Mormon militia. A gruff guide (Taylor Kitsch) might be of some help, but the land is rife with violent factions with competing claims to the blood-soaked soil.Subscribe to Pop Culture Happy Hour Plus at plus.npr.org/happyhour Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

“One of the things that I really wanted to focus on, and I felt it immediately after meeting Lina the housewife in Indiana [played by Betty Gilpin in the show], whose husband no longer wanted to kiss her on the mouth, I felt like this woman was as important as the Queen of England, as important as Napoleon. I felt her dreams and fears are just as universal as someone who has defeated an army and the only reason we're not hearing about her is because we have these sorts of rules in place for what possesses historical significance. And I don't really think that that's necessarily true,” says Lisa Taddeo, author of the book Three Women, on which her new TV show is based. In today's episode, we speak to Lisa Taddeo, creator of the show Three Women that stars Shailene Woodley, Betty Gilpin, DeWanda Wise and Gabrielle Creevy as “ordinary” women searching for their sexual identity and fulfillment in disparate and surprising ways. The show is an intimate, often stark portrayal of forbidden female desire and the consequences of that desire – both good and bad. We also talk about writing the “female gaze” into the scripts, filming with prosthetic penises, the power the book Twilight has on teenage girls, and the uncanny way our mothers influence our own sexuality. “My mother made up her face every morning, even when she wasn't going to leave the house. Who is she? My father sees her before she puts on her face as they say, so it's not for him. Nobody is coming to the door today, so it's not for them. It's certainly not for me, because I see her without makeup when she washes it off at night. So, who is it for, you know? And that was a question I had but didn't really know how to frame,” Taddeo says. To hear more about the groundbreaking show Three Women that's airing on Starz, listen to the podcast. Trigger warning: contains mentions of sexual explicit material, sexual assault and trauma.
