"There's never one big break, that's such a myth - there's degrees of getting recognised" Robert Emery talks to Cassidy Janson, actress and now singer/songwriter best known for playing the lead in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical and joining Beverley Knight and Amber Riley to form the trio; The Leading Ladies. Cassidy talks about the challenges of being a musical theatre actress, the struggle to record her debut album, and what it's like to be a standby Elphaba in London's West End. And of course, she answers a quick-fire round of questions culminating in the big question; Kate Monster or Lucy the Slut? Since her first break playing opposite Neil Patrick Harris, she has gone on to forge an incredible career in theatre and has had rave reviews for her new album, Cassidy. This is a fascinating conversation with a true professional who has some excellent advice on being productive in an unproductive world. In this episode, Connor and Catherine sit down with West End star Rebecca Lock. We speak about Rebecca's time in the National Youth Music Theatre to her training at Central School of Speech and Drama. We speak about her variety of West End credits including Carlotta Giudicelli in Phantom of the Opera, Kate Monster in Avenue Q and Mrs Fleming in Heathers. We also speak about her time as Lilli Vanessi in Kiss Me, Kate, at the Sheffield Crucible. Theme music by Simon Oskarsson and Alex Cardall for ACT Music Ldn.
Rebecca Lock is one of my absolute favourite actors. She is currently stealing the show in Heathers at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in the West End. A show she’s been with since its first London workshop in 2017, through its run at The Other Palace earlier this year before its transfer. Among her credits are both the title role and Mrs Banks in Mary Poppins (not at the same time), Kate Monster and Lucy the Slut in Avenue Q (at the same time), Carlotta in Phantom of the Opera and Bertrande in Martin Guerre. In this episode we talked about working with Carrie Hope Fletcher, how the devoted Heathers fans go to an incredible effort to dress up as their favourite characters, and how she picks her Steve every night (if you know, you know). You can see Rebecca as Ms Fleming in Heathers until 3rd November 2018. The show continues at the Theatre Royal Haymarket until 24th November.
Actors Leah Morrow and Jackson Evans join the conversation to talk about their return to the roles of Kate Monster and Princeton in the 2018 revival of the 2014 Mercury Theater Chicago smash hit production of the Tony Award-winning musical AVENUE Q that played for 169 performances. In the continuation of my behind-the-scenes mini-series, I revisit the first interview I ever recorded for Imaginary Worlds -- the puppeteer Stephanie D'Abruzzo, who is best known for performing as Kate Monster in the Broadway musical Avenue Q. I interviewed Stephanie for an episode that compared puppets to computer generated characters, but she had so many interesting things to say about the craft of puppeteering which didn't fit into that early episode. In other words, she can tell you how to get to Sesame Street. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Computer animation vs. puppets. Fans have been debating for years which is more believable -- especially when a creature is sharing a scene with a human actor. I talk with ILM animator Charles Alleneck who worked on the Star Wars prequels, and Stephanie D'Abruzzo who works on Sesame Street and performed Kate Monster in the original cast of Ave Q.
