Sister Rosetta Tharpe was known as the ‘godmother of rock and roll' and influenced countless musicians from Elvis to Johnny Cash. Now Olivier Award-winning performer Beverley Knight is playing Sister Rosetta in a new production, Marie and Rosetta, which has just opened at the Rose Theatre in London. It tells the story of Rosetta and her singing partner, Marie Knight, described as one of the most remarkable and revolutionary duos in music history. Beverley joins Nuala McGovern in the Woman's Hour studio to discuss how the show hopes to restore these forgotten musical heroines to the spotlight. The Government has announced that care workers will no longer be recruited from overseas as part of a crackdown on visas for lower-skilled workers. The care sector has criticised the plans as "cruel" and "short-sighted". To discuss this and what good care looks like, Nuala is joined by Gavin Edwards, Head of Social Care at Unison, and care worker Kathryn Faulke, author of the memoir Every Kind of People: A Journey into the Heart of Care Work. It's thought that around 3 to 4% of people in the UK, that's one in 20, have ADHD - Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However many women still remain undiagnosed for decades of their lives, with those in their 40s, 50s and 60s only now discovering they have it for the first time. Jo Beazley was diagnosed with ADHD just two years ago at the age of 49, after her symptoms worsened during the menopause. She joins Nuala along with Amanda Kirby, the former chair of the ADHD Foundation and a professor in the field of neurodiversity. This week we'll be hearing different perspectives on the recent Supreme Court ruling on the definition of a woman under the Equality Act, and how it could and should be interpreted on the ground. The Equality and Human Rights Commission has issued interim guidance that, in places open to the public, trans women shouldn't use women's facilities such as toilets. Today Nuala speaks to Robin Moira White, a barrister who specialises in taking discrimination cases, and who is also a trans woman. Robin transitioned in 2011 and is co-author of A Practical Guide to Transgender Law. Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Sarah Jane Griffiths

There, he experienced his first improvisation, captivated by the guitar mastery of Jim Mullen and the saxophone brilliance of Alan Skidmore.Aaron's artistic evolution flourished during a decade in Manchester, where he became a prominent figure in the local music scene, performing with up to 15 bands simultaneously. Highlights included his tenure with batucada ensemble Inner Sense and the formation of the Latin hip hop group Nylon Jungle. After moving to London, he caught the attention of Amy Winehouse's musical director, leading to a pivotal role in her band. For our final episode of 2023, Alexa is joined by sought-after choral director and vocal coach, Mark De-Lisser. He has worked with the likes of Ariana Grande, Jessie J, and Beverly Knight. He has also been involved in TV shows such as "Our Dementia Choir" with Vicky McClure and "The Masked Singer." Mark made the arrangement of "Stand By Me," which was performed by the Kingdom Choir at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018. This performance has been streamed over 4 million times. Mark is here to discuss how to sing and teach the gospel vocal style. KEY TAKEAWAYS Gospel music is a Christian genre rooted in the black experience. Known for emotive vocals, call-and-response, and Christian themes, it often features choirs and instruments. Gospel expresses spirituality, joy, or sorrow, with improvisation common. Evolving into sub-genres like traditional and contemporary gospel, it has influenced various music styles, playing a significant role in religious worship and shaping American musical development. When it comes to the question of the cultural appropriation of gospel music, Mark believes that you have to give acknowledgment to where that music came from. You have to think about the composer and the spiritual background of where the music came from and reference it when you come to teach it. The most important thing you need to remember when singing gospel music is that you need to believe in the words that are coming out of your mouth. Even if you're not a religious person, you should think of a thing or idea that lifts you up and gives you strength. When singing gospel, allow yourself to be more vulnerable and get wrapped up in the emotion of the piece. Having a licence to be more vulnerable will make it more likely you affect the audience and make them leave with your story. BEST MOMENTS ‘Gospel is songs of good news' ‘It blew my mind because I'd only heard traditional gospel music' ‘They were creating these songs out of a need for freedom' ‘If you connect you will affect' ‘We were born singers and society does its best to beat it out of us' EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: https://markdelisser.com/ Social Media: Instagram: @markdelisser & @mdlsingers Relevant Links & Mentions: Artists Mentioned: Thomas Dorsey; Kirk Franklin; Maverick City; Mahalia Jackson; Andre Crouch; Walter Hawkins; Richard Smallwood; Donald Lawrence; Johnathan McReynolds; Daryl Coley; Take Six; The Winans; Mischa Paris; Tai Trabet; Anita Wilson; Mary Mary; Tom Odell; CeCe Winans; The Darkness (Book) So you Want to Sing Gospel: A Guide for Performers by Dr Trineice Robinson-Martin Dr Trineice Robinson-Martin Dane Chalfin Felton and Norton Community Gospel Choir BAST Book A Call: basttraining.com/bookacall/ ABOUT THE GUEST Mark De-Lisser is one of the most sought after choral directors and vocal coaches in the UK. Joining us today is a world-renowned singer, actor and performer who's not just one show - she's a show business. It's the wonderful Beverley Knight! She joins Kate to talk about some of the people and places that have shaped her life and career. It's quite the collection: she's been helped along the way by the likes of Prince and David Bowie; put on such a spectacular show that Stevie Wonder joined her onstage from the audience; and, after selling out the Royal Albert Hall on tour, returned there this year to pick up an Olivier Award for her performance in Sylvia! And she's achieved it all with her signature mix of work ethic and humility.***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. It means a great deal to the show and will make it easier for other potential listeners to find us. Thanks!*** Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this podcast I chat to Mark Knight the head honcho of Toolroom Records for an album listen-through, we deep dive into the production and artistry behind the album! Toolroom founder and Grammy-nominated producer Mark Knight reveals his highly anticipated new artist album, 'Untold Business', with a set of 13 beautifully crafted, positive, life-affirming songs deemed to lift everyone's spirits. Featuring an all-star cast, including Michael Gray, Robert Owens, Shingai (Noisettes), Gene Farris and more, 'Untold Business' features Mark's recent smash with Beverley Knight and The London Community Gospel Choir, 'Everything's Gonna Be Alright', and a one of his biggest releases to date, 'All 4 Love', with Rene Amesz and Tasty Lopez, which became firmly lodged on BBCR1 for 6 weeks. Known for releasing quality club records, ‘Untold Business' sees Mark Knight go back to his roots, reprising the sounds and records that made him the DJ he is today. Delving through his extensive collection of classic Funk, House, Soul and Disco records from the 1970s and 80s has provided the bedrock for the album which pays homage to the soulful, vocal house music that Mark first fell in love within the 90s. With stunning results primed to stand the test of time, ‘Untold Business' boasts some of Mark's best work to date, a testament to his creativity and maturity as an artist, and indeed, why he is still one of the UK's best-loved dance music producers! Mark Knight joined me on Twitch for an album walkthrough, we played some of the tracks of the album, he spoke about the stories about the tracks and how they came about.
Join Scott Mills for the ultimate celebration of the UK's best-loved pop star, who this year headlines Radio 2 in the Park on Sunday 17 September.Australia rings in the New Year first. But as a new millennium dawns, one of her favorite daughters is relaxing in LA. She won't be standing still for long.In the summer of 2000, the world entered Kylie Minogue's third and most iconic era so far. Newly signed to a major label, she's about to unleash a wave of shimmering dance-pop - an imperial phase.Spinning Around introduces audiences to a yet another incarnation of Kylie - one whose sophisticated sound, sex appeal and knowing sense of fun rockets her to her rightful place at the top of the charts. It's a feat she'll repeat with a run of hits that dominates radio playlists. Can't Get You Out of My Head, with its La La La earworm, makes waves across the Atlantic. The future looks Golden. But in 2005, a shock diagnosis with breast cancer cuts the music short. Her illness and recovery play out in public.Through BBC Archive and new interviews with those who knew her at the time, you'll track the dizzy highs and crushing lows of a turbulent era for the Queen of Noughties Pop. An era that leaves her stronger, wiser - and more determined than ever to perform.Contributors include British singer and actor Olly Alexander, Tia Kofi, Jessie Ware, Beverley Knight, Jack Savoretti, Jake Shears and Cathy Dennis (who co-wrote Kylie's 2001 hit Can't Get You Out of My Head), as well as Radio 2 presenters Fearne Cotton and Michelle Visage.
Join Scott Mills for the ultimate celebration of the UK's best-loved pop star, who this year headlines Radio 2 in the Park on Sunday 17 September. The 90s are well underway, and Kylie Minogue is in uncharted territory. After splitting with powerhouse production team Stock, Aitken and Waterman, she's joined forces with indie label Deconstruction Records, spurning the advances of a slew of record industry suits. For Kylie, it's an era defined by experimentation. A new look, a new ethos and a host of unexpected collaborations: M People, Pet Shop Boys, Manic Street Preachers, Nick Cave and more. It's not always an easy ride. As an artist, she's maturing in the public eye. Caught between the worlds of pop and ‘credible' indie, Kylie fiercely resists pigeonholing from the press and fans alike.Through revealing interviews, both brand new and from the BBC Archive, you'll witness one of pop's great metamorphoses. A process that takes the girl who was Charlene, and molds her into one of pop's savviest operators, following her own road to megastardom. On the cusp of a new millennium, Kylie's ready to dominate the charts. However will she pull it off?Contributors include Keith Blackhurst, David Tennant, Beverley Knight, Jessie Ware (who collaborated with Kylie on the single Kiss of Life released in October 2021), Jack Savoretti (who duetted with Kylie for their 2018 song Music's Too Sad Without You), Jake Shears (who collaborated with Kylie for her 2004 single I Believe in You, as well as her 2010 album Aphrodite and their 2018 song Voices), and Radio 2 presenters Rylan Clark and Dermot O'Leary.

Karl Willett is a top international stylist having worked in the fashion industry for 20 years building a vibrant portfolio of celebrity clients including Amanda Holden, Kylie Minogue, Jennifer Hudson, Paloma Faith, Nicole Scherzinger, Jessie J and Beverley Knight. He is also a happily married, family man with ‘miracle' twin boys being born by surrogacy.Karl has the family, a career that he loves, status and recognition, friends and connections, but what did it take to get to this point? From having no styling experience but securing a 2 week internship at Selfridges and then landing his first celebrity client through a freelance contact. To styling and building Paloma Faith into a brand and fashion icon, Karl's strategy of fake it till you make it, take risks and hustle hard paid off. Behind the illusion of seamless, “fun, glitz and glamour”, is the reality of working in a competitive industry where you don't show weaknesses and with in-demand clients, where you assist and style rather than burden. When Karl struggled mentally and felt “nothing was good enough” he knew he had to make changes. Karl envisioned being a dad before meeting his husband but that certainty became hope as they searched the globe for a surrogate. After one failed pregnancy and 19 weeks into the second, when one of the twins' sacks ruptured, hope dwindled and despair unfolded until week 35 when both baby boys were born healthy. Identifying that his upbringing gave him confidence to go after his dreams and further strengthened by the solid relationship he created with his partner, it enabled his career to flourish, it left Karl feeling that he has a lot to give “I feel my purpose here on earth is bigger than my job, my family and my loved ones”, “I almost attract people that might need a bit of support”.Listen to this episode if: You are considering surrogacy. You are interested in fashion industry/styling You have struggled mentally at work or in business. You believe being the ‘good guy/girl' doesn't get you far.Instagram@karl_willett@thehoppswilletthouseInspire@inspirewithnicola Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
