Temos nome para o ciclo de primeiras-obras! CICLO TROLHAS (sempre a manter o nível mediano).

Les autres qui m'intriguent, me motivent, m'interpellent, me déconcertent, me passionnent. Varda's debut film, La Pointe Courte, is an intriguing first stab at many of the themes she would come to later refine through her amazing 7-decade-spanning career. Topics include: potatoes, friendship, cats, and whether talking too much prevents you from being happy.NOTE: This episode has a higher amount of background noise than usual… please forgive us.

We've worked with Ela on a number of articles, and her most recent project was the Venice Days program at the upcoming Venice film festival. Documentary was the focus of our conversation, ranging from a new Iranian film about a prison for women and girls, Sunless Shadows, to an early feature by Errol Morris called Vernon, Florida. We also discussed Agnès Varda's groundbreaking debut La Pointe Courte; a fascinating film about visual culture and personal perceptions, The Viewing Booth; Kim Longinotto's Divorce Iranian Style; and Again Once Again by Argentine author Romina Paula. Also mentioned are the instant barroom classic Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets, and the landmark work of Portuguese director Paolo Rocha. Photo by Steve Snodgrass

This Friday, our career-spanning Agnès Varda retrospective kicks off here at Film at Lincoln Center and continues through January 6 with Rosalie Varda in person. To celebrate the series, we’re sharing a conversation with the French New Wave pioneer from our archives. In 2015, she joined us for our annual Art of the Real festival and participated in a special Q&A with programmer Rachael Rakes. They discussed her enormously influential feature debut La Pointe Courte, directed when she was just 25 years old, and which many critics and scholars now consider as the first proper entry in what would become the Nouvelle Vague. Besides sharing fascinating anecdotes from the making of the film, Varda also told stories of her interactions with other icons of French cinema like Alain Resnais, Francois Truffaut, and André Bazin. One of my favorite people to talk movies with returns for the 2nd time this year! Film blogger, enthusiast, and friend Kate Blair is back to talk about a true pioneer of the Nouvelle Vague movement, Agnes Varda.  Her self-funded debut, the fiction-documentary hybrid 1956’s LA POINTE COURTE is often considered the unofficial first New Wave film; when she made it, she had no professional cinema training. Varda essentially evolved with each production in exciting and innovative ways that continue to dazzle viewers, including myself, who hadn't seen her work until just one month ago. I cannot say enough good things about her first few films, and as usual, we weren't able to cover everything due to time constraints and the fact that some titles aren't readily available.  But we'll definitely return to this fascinating filmmaker who really puts herself out there.  We focus on her debut, CLEO FROM 5 TO 7, HAPPINESS, VAGABOND, THE GLEANERS AND I, THE BEACHES OF AGNES, and a couple of short films too.  Hope you enjoy our discussion on a director that you definitely should know more about, so be sure to experience her work for yourself! 00:00 - 04:43 - Introduction 04:44 - 07:24 - Introduction with Kate 07:25 - 08:57 - Director Song (feat. Legendary French filmmaker Agnès Varda, who will be a recipient of an honorary Palme d'Or at Cannes, is the focus of this week's episode. The director stopped by the Film Society during our second annual Art of the Real festival, during which she was honored with a sidebar retrospective entitled The Actualities of Agnès Varda. Art of the Real is founded on the most expansive possible view of documentary film, and the selections from Varda's work showed the director's repeated interest in the boundary between fiction and nonfiction. Even in her fictions films, she always incorporated elements of the real. Following a screening of her seminal debut, LA POINTE COURTE, Agnès Varda joined festival co-programmer Rachel Rakes for a Q&A. Besides sharing fascinating anecdotes from the making of the film, Varda also told stories of her interactions with other icons of French cinema like Alain Resnais, Francois Truffaut, and André Bazin.
