I'm very excited to bring this episode to the IFH Tribe. Today on the show we have filmmaker, Filmtrepreneur, and self-distribution expert Steven Lewis Simpson. Steven has been able to generate hundreds of thousands in revenue for his film Neither Wolf Nor Dog without ever releasing it online. He made all his money self-distributing theatrically. Not only in the US but worldwide. In conversation we discuss how we, as filmmakers, can create our own creative reality, even in an industry as inaccessible as the film business. No-one has ever attempted the pan-European distribution he doing or released the way I have in the US. That amazes me as it seems so obvious. The key thing is that, people don't want to try what has never been done.Neither Wolf Nor Dog is one of the most culturally important American films in years and stars a 95-year-old Lakota elder who takes the audience into a contemporary landscape and reveals the echoes of the massive American Genocide that they still feel today. Not exactly a blockbuster-style film.At eighteen, Steven Lewis Simpson was Britain’s youngest stockbroker and trader. Four years later he moved to Hollywood to work at legendary Hollywood producer, Roger Corman’s studio. At twenty-three, he directed his award-winning first feature film, Ties.He recently theatrically self-distributed his sixth feature film, Neither Wolf Nor Dog, as he saw the few independent films that actually found distributors in the US were being poorly released. As a result of his re-imagining the theatrical distribution model, his film became the most successful self-distributed film in some time. The film achieved the longest theatrical run of any 2017 release in the USA – a wider release than the last two Palme d'Or winners and often out-grossing blockbusters when head to head, even though he had no distribution experience. He even has a new masterclass that can help you on your path. This episode might just change the way you look at making money with your film. Steven is a true Filmtrepreneur. Please enjoy my eye-opening conversation with Steven Lewis Simpson.

When "Parasite" won best picture at the Academy Awards on Sunday night, it cemented the film's position in history - as well as South Korea's growing cultural influence in the United States. The South Korean film from director Bong Joon Ho has smashed box office records and won awards internationally. Now the movie -- a genre-warping mix of drama, horror and dark comedy -- has become the first foreign language film to win the coveted best picture at the Oscars. The movie also won Oscars for best director, best screenplay and best international feature. The victory was met with euphoria on social media from South Koreans as well as Asian Americans, who celebrated the win as uplifting the entire wider Asian community on an international stage."South Korea did it," tweeted Chinese American filmmaker Jon Chu. "History made."Wonsuk Chin, a South Korean film director and friend of Bong's, said the win felt "surreal.""(Hollywood) never embraced a movie in a language not in English made outside Hollywood like this," he told CNN. "Does this mean Hollywood is ready for a change? ... If Parasite's big win makes some curious moviegoers venture out and check out some more Korean or other international movies, I think the change is coming.""They say, when it rains, it pours," he added, pointing out "Parasite's" wins in multiple categories. "In this case, when it rains, it's a deluge."Even South Korean President Moon Jae-in spoke about the Oscars win, saying in a statement that he was "proud of director Bong Joon Ho, the actors and crew.""Taking home four Oscars, after winning the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival last year, can be attributed to the accumulated efforts of every Korean filmmaker over the past 100 years," said Moon. "I am very pleased to see a Korean film stand shoulder to shoulder with those of other countries and mark the beginning of another 100 years of Korean filmmaking."South Korea's soft power in the West"Parasite" is just the latest piece of South Korean culture that has gained traction and prominence in the West.Just a few years ago, the 2016 South Korean zombie apocalypse film "Train to Busan" debuted at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Like "Parasite," it also swept award shows, broke into international markets, and was praised for its social commentary on class inequality. For many abroad, it was the first time they had ever encountered South Korean horror; the film arguably introduced the genre into the American consciousness, and helped pave the way for future films. It's not just movies -- South Korean music, makeup, and fashion have been making their presence known abroad over the past decade.Korean pop, or K-pop, had long been viewed by Western audiences as a niche, slightly bizarre genre. But in recent years, it has emerged as a heavyweight in the American music scene, with K-pop groups breaking YouTube records and performing on mainstream platforms like "The Tonight Show" and "Good Morning America."The group BTS, possibly the biggest boy band in the world right now, even won a Billboard Music Award in 2017, beating out American favorites like Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Shawn Mendes.South Korea is also regarded as one of the world's leaders in the beauty and makeup industry, with consumers across the West buying coveted South Korean products. Top English-language fashion magazines like Vogue and Elle now regularly feature South Korean beauty products. The South Korean government has recognized the sheer force and potential of cultural exports like its music and film, and has backed this cultural expansion, seeing it is a vehicle for soft power and a way to boost the nation's reputation.Changing the face of media representationTo many, Bong Joon Ho and the entire cast and crew of "Parasite" represent a long-awaited demographic change at the Oscars -- as well as a point of immense pride for South Koreans watching from home."This is a remarkable chapter in Korean culture," s...

Parasite is a 2019 South Korean black comedy thriller film directed by Bong Joon-ho, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Han Jin-won. It stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik, and Park So-dam, and follows the members of a poor household who scheme to become employed by a wealthy family by infiltrating the household and posing as unrelated, highly qualified individuals. The film premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival on 21 May 2019, where it became the first Korean film to win the Palme d'Or and the first to win with a unanimous vote since 2013's Blue Is the Warmest Colour. It was then released in South Korea by CJ Entertainment on 30 May 2019. It was praised as one of the greatest South Korean films ever made and one of the best films of the 2010s. It has grossed $167.6 million worldwide so far, becoming Bong's highest-grossing release and the third highest-grossing film in South Korea. Parasite received numerous accolades, with six nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best International Feature Film, making it the first South Korean film to receive Academy Award recognition. At the 77th Golden Globe Awards, it won the award for Best Foreign Language Film. The Oscars are here, already. After the shortest awards season in decades, the 92nd annual Academy Awards will get underway Sunday evening at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The red carpet is being rolled out two to three weeks earlier than usual in a bid to freshen up a ceremony and potentially boost ratings. The truncated time table has put the normally bloated Oscars season on a diet (Sunday's show will also, for the second straight year, be hostless) and sent film academy members scrambling to finish their movie-watching — no small task in a year featuring a few three-hour epics like "The Irishman" and "Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood."Fittingly for a fast race, a movie about a mad dash has risen to the top of the heap. After winning nearly every major precursor award, Sam Mendes' "1917," about a pair of British soldiers sent with an urgent message to deliver through recently-held enemy territory, is the favourite for best picture. Thanks to its technical dazzle, the seemingly one-continuous-shot "1917" is also likely to come away with the most awards Sunday, even without any acting nominations.Although Joaquin Phoenix, Renée Zellweger, Brad Pitt and Laura Dern all appear to be all-but-certain locks in the acting categories, there's still the potential for a history-making upset. Momentum has swung behind Bong Joon Ho's South Korean thriller "Parasite," and some believe it has a chance to become the first non-English language film to win best picture.Such a win would be a watershed moment for the Academy Awards, which has long been content to relegate international films to their own category. But in an effort to diversify its largely white and male membership, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has inducted more overseas members in recent years. And just about no one has a bad word to say about the widely praised class satire "Parasite,"  the Palme d'Or winner at last year's Cannes Film Festival and the first foreign language film to win  top honours from the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The official pre-show will begin at 6:30 p.m. EST on ABC. Among the presenters the academy will lean on in the absence of a host are Tom Hanks, Maya Rudolph, Spike Lee, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Chris Rock, Timothée Chalamet, Will Ferrell, Diane Keaton and Kelly Marie Tran. The ceremony will come just days after the death of Kirk Douglas, one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood's golden age. Kobe Bryant, a 2018 Oscar winner for the short "Dear Basketball," is expected to be included in the ceremony's In Memoriam segment.ABC and the academy will be hoping a widely watched field of nominees — including the $1 billion-grossing "Joker," up for a leading 11 awards — will help viewership. Last year's show garnered 29.6 million viewers, a 12% uptick. This year's Oscars comes amid a streaming overhaul throughout Hollywood. Hurrying to catch up to Netflix and Amazon, most of the major studios are prepping or have already launched their own streaming services, as have new entrants like Apple. Netflix comes into the Oscars with a leading 24 nominations thanks to "The Irishman," "Marriage Story," "The Two Popes" and the likely best documentary winner, "American Factory."But despite spending heavily through awards season, Netflix may go home with only a few awards. The streamer is still seeking its first best picture win after Alfonso Cuaron's "Roma" came up just shy last year.Instead, this year's Oscar favourites are largely movies released widely in theatres. They also predominantly feature male characters and come from male directors. After a year in which women made significant gains behind the camera, no female directors were nominated for best director. The acting categories are also the least diverse since the fallout of #OscarsSoWhite pushed the academy to remake its membership. Cynthia Erivo ("Harriet") is the only actor of colour nominated. Those results, which have been a topic  in speeches through awards seas...

Sam Clements is joined by cinema programmers Carol McKay and Codie Entwistle to discuss the results of the BAFTAs and Bong Joon-Ho's new film, Parasite. In cinemas now. A glorious success and box-office hit for Korean auteur Bong Joon-ho (Snowpiercer, Okja) and already the most successful Palme d'Or winner ever, Parasite is a politically charged cinematic wonder. Described by Bong himself as "a comedy without clowns and a tragedy without villains", the film moves quickly from one tone to another, mixing pathos and satire with thrills and drama. A vertical story of class struggle – punctuated by staircase scenes going from mouldy basements to top floors, from darkness to breezy spaces designed by star architects – Parasite observes and dissects with surgical precision the life of two families of different social backgrounds. Ki-taek (Song Kang-ho) is a good-for-nothing, unemployed family man, patriarch of a family of grifters – his wife Chung-sook (Chang Hyae-jin), his clever twenty-something daughter Ki-jung (Park So-dam), and his son Ki-woo (Choi Woo-shik) – who live in an overcrowded, sordid basement. The Parks, on the other hand, live in a fabulous house with their teenage daughter Da-hye and terribly spoiled son Da-song, who has suffered a childhood trauma that occasionally causes him seizures and strange behaviour. When, due to an unexpected stroke of luck, Ki-woo is hired by the Parks to be the private English tutor of Da-hye, the destinies of the two families cross. Their explosive meeting exposes the merciless evils of class inequalities, culminating in a powerful and utterly original outcome.

February maybe the shortest month of the year yet it contains a compelling wealth of cinematic joy, and a little bit of despair too. Mark Cosgrove, Watershed Cinema Curator, and Thea Berry, Watershed Cinema Producer share their recommendations and highlights for the month ahead.First up they discuss why the long anticipated, sensational, Palme d'Or winning comedy thriller Parasite, is just so good. Also much anticipated is Portrait of a Lady on Fire in which they say something really special happens in they way it tells female stories. Then they shine a light on Japan with highlights from the Japan Foundation season of films which search for happiness in Japanese society and prolific filmmakerTakashi Miike's brutal, bloody, and brilliantly over the top First Love.On to the fast fashion world of Greed starring Steve Coogan which Mark suggests could be called Carry on Capitalism – a laugh packed critique of capitalism, which still manages to pointedly highlight its inherent inequalities. They also recommend Mr Jones a story of journalism, truth and lies set in Stalin's Russia – a true story which influenced George Orwell to write Animal Farm. And finally there's Little Joe in which Thea and Mark find an unsettling, fascinating and though-provoking vision of a near future in which a new plant can lifts people's moods.

David Lynch pitches ideas to the SyFy Channel, we watch a truly abominable film called 'Ice Sharks' and speak to King Henry the 8th about his papal issues. SHOW NOTES David Keith Lynch (born January 20, 1946) is an American filmmaker, painter, musician, actor, and photographer. He is best known for films such as Eraserhead (1977), Blue Velvet (1986) and Mulholland Drive (2001), often regarded by critics as among the best films of their respective decades,[1][2] and for his successful 1990–91 television series Twin Peaks, which led to him being labeled "the first popular Surrealist" by noted film critic Pauline Kael.[3] A recipient of an Academy Honorary Award in 2019, he has received three Academy Award nominations[4] for Best Director, and has won France's César Award for Best Foreign Film twice, as well as the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival[5] and a Golden Lion award for lifetime achievement at the Venice Film Festival. He has been described by The Guardian as "the most important director of this era",[6] while AllMovie called him "the Renaissance man of modern American filmmaking" Henry VIII (28 June 1491 – 28 January 1547) was King of England from 1509 until his death in 1547. He was the second Tudor monarch, succeeding his father Henry VII. Henry is best known for his six marriages, in particular his efforts to have his first marriage (to Catherine of Aragon) annulled. Ice Sharks is a punishingly shit film from 2016. Don't watch it ever.

I never go into a movie with anything but the best intentions. We (humans) are constantly being let down. Unreasonable expectations are among our greatest scourges. When a movie with a four-dot ellipsis in the title immediately features an onscreen intertitle utilizing the three-dot variety, you'll want to die on the spot. This is one of the basic facts of life. Let's rewind.... When you briefly catch wind that the Palme d'Or winner at Cannes 1969 is celebrating its 50th anniversary and said movie features one of your favorite actors (Malcom McDowell) and you (somehow?) have never even heard of it before and that it's also streaming for free on Kanopy, well, you're gonna watch this movie and everything else that happens afterwards is up to fate.... 'If....' is not good. It's not bad in any offensive way, although the decision to present some scenes in black and white and others in color, seemingly at random, is aesthetically maddening. No, this film's main offense is that it is a snooze, a total bore. What charisma McDowell has, and he has buckets of it, is dried out by a lackluster supporting cast and non-starter script which, via the sands of time, has had any and all semblance of subversiveness wrung from of it. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/myspace/support
