T Lo take a deep dive into director Richard Linklater's slavish love letter to the French New Wave, "Nouvelle Vague," about the making of Jean-Luc Godard's "Breathless" in 1959. After unpacking the homages and references, as well as the importance of Godard's boundary-shattering work, they settle on a single question: Is it even possible to pay homage to an act of reckless artistry by meticulously recreating it?
David discusses the movies he's been watching, including The Choral, Song Sung Blue, The Plague, Marty Supreme, The Testament of Ann Lee, If I Had Legs I'd Kick You, Nouvelle Vague, 28 Years Later and Oh. In "The Testament Of Ann Lee" folgt die Regisseurin Mona Fastvold den Spuren der Shaker-Bewegung aus dem Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts. Als Bonus am Anfang: Kurzbesprechungen von Bradley Coopers Ehedrama "Is This Thing On?" und Kristen Stewarts Regiedebüt "The Chronology of Water". Sendungshinweis: FM4 Film Podcast, 23.03.2026, 0 Uhr
Host Jesse Jackson welcomes back college professor Maryanne Janosik to discuss Bruce Springsteen's newly released protest song, its rapid creative turnaround, and how it fits Springsteen's history of politically charged music and themes of Catholic social justice. They compare the song's naming of names to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's “Ohio,” speculate about political expression at the Grammys, and reflect on concerns about free speech, polarization, and the shrinking space for teaching controversial art and history. The conversation shifts to film awards, including disappointment that “Deliver Me From Nowhere” received no Oscar nominations, debate about biopic fatigue, and Maryanne's recommended under-the-radar films such as “Train Dreams,” Linklater's “Blue Moon” and “Nouvelle Vague,” “Sorry, Baby,” and the baseball film “Eefus,” plus praise for “Sinners” and “Fruitvale Station.” https://www.mjthemovies.com/ 00:00 Welcome Back Maryanne 00:33 Meet Maryanne Janosik 01:50 Bruce Drops New Protest Song 02:55 How Artists Create Fast 05:26 Protest Music Context 07:38 Catholic Imagination Social Justice 08:45 Teaching Songs of Protest 11:07 Grammys Politics and Censorship 13:30 Academic Freedom Under Pressure 17:13 Reviewing the New Song 20:36 Super Bowl Halftime Culture 23:44 Oscars and Springsteen Films 24:37 Box Office vs Oscars 25:35 Deliver Me From Nowhere 28:36 Biopic Fatigue Debate 30:26 Good vs Great Movies 32:24 Why Sinners Works 36:48 Michael B Jordan Rise 39:23 Under the Radar Picks 45:08 Catherine OHara Tribute 47:02 Wrap Up and Farewell Learn more about your ad choices. GOOD LUCK, HAVE FUN, DON'T DIE. Bye. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Author and broadcaster Samira Ahmed used to watch A Hard Day's Night once a week and she's just written an enthralling account of the shoot and its impact for the BFI's Classic Films series. A movie, she points out, that celebrates Britishness and suburbia made largely by immigrants that broke every Hollywood rule, a film made to capture the essence of the Beatles before the bubble burst “which turned out to be the start of something not the end”. She talks to us here about … … the film's connections with the Goons, the Young Ones, Dr Strangelove, Star Wars, Billy Liar, It's Trad Dad and the Nouvelle Vague … and its influence - from the Dave Clark Five's Catch Us If You Can and Paul Jones' Privilege to Charlie XCX and the Moment … how the train sequence for I Should Have Known Better invented pop video … the play John and Paul wrote (Pilchard!) that was a homage to its scriptwriter Alun Owen … Paul's two-day solo shoot with Isla Blair and other (mercifully) deleted scenes ... Profumo, pirate radio, the changing Britain of 1964 … Pattie Boyd, Anna Quayle, Alison Seebohm and other stand-out female stars … Wilfred Brambell's gigantic fee and how badly his part has aged … why George and Ringo emerged as the stars … surely the greatest scene? – “She's a drag, a well-known drag. We turn the sound down on her and say rude things” … “hair that moved!”: the film's impact in the USA … “beat-up and depraved in the nicest possible way” … and how the dubbed-on dialogue about Ingmar Bergman made the German version “a film for cineastes”. Sam Clements is curating a fictional film festival. He'll accept almost anything, but the movie must not be longer than 90 minutes. This is the 90 Minutes Or Less Film Fest podcast. In episode 159 Sam is joined by filmmaker Richard Linklater, director of Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, School of Rock, and Blue Moon. His new movie, Nouvelle Vague, follows the shooting of Godard's Breathless [À Bout De Souffle]. Richard has chosen Breathless [À Bout De Souffle] (90 mins). Directed by Jean-Luc Godard and released in 1960, the classic French New Wave drama stars Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg. Sam and Richard discuss shooting his new film Nouvelle Vague on the same locations as Breathless, why the runtime of Breathless was revolutionary, and how Richard rarely makes films over two hours long. Sorry Baby, but it's One Battle After Another, as we clash and debate our favorite films of 2025! We're covering obligatory mentions of the biggest films of the year and picking up our Weapons to dunk on some that we're Regretting You watched. Which of these films will we look back on with strong Sentimental Value, 28 Years Later? Which are winners, which are Sinners? I'm afraid you're going to have to Wake Up Dead Man from your Dreams (Sex Love), some might even call that a Resurrection, because you've got No Other Choice but to listen and find out.LinksWilson's Reviews: News from Home, Eat Drink Man WomanBen's Reviews: Avatar: Fire and Ash, What Does That Nature Say to You Eli's Sinners ReviewBen's Kinetoscope Piece: The Spirits in the MediumList: Full List of films discussed on LetterboxdList: Deep Cut's Top 12 of 2025Tell us your faves at our FREE patreon, discord server, and our socials @ www.deepcutpod.com Timestamps:00:00:00 Intro00:02:58 General 2025 thoughts00:12:08 Non-2025 gems00:16:22 2025 on Deep Cut00:20:16 Eli's fave Letterboxd reviews from Wilson and Ben00:21:46 Obligatory Mentions00:22:06 Marty Supreme dir. This week's episode of the Empire Podcast sees Chris Hewitt sit down with Bradley Cooper and Will Arnett, director, co-writers, and stars of the new dramedy, Is This Thing On?, which takes inspiration from the real-life story of British comedian, John Bishop. It's an in-depth chat that we bring to you in full (although we did cut out a bit where someone poured a glass of water. Sorry to all you water completists out there), and it's well worth your time. It starts at 55:50 approx and runs until 1:20:14 approx. Either side of that, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and Alex Godfrey for a fun episode in which they discuss the movie moments guaranteed to make them cry no matter how many times they've seen them; run their eyes over what passes for movie news (it was quite a slow week); review Is This Thing On?, action-comedy The Wrecking Crew, Jason Statham's Shelter, mad monkey movie Primate; and Richard Linklater's love letter to the French New Wave, Nouvelle Vague. Oh, and we make good on last week's promise, and bring you James, Helen, and Chris tackling their specialist subjects in a round that pays homage to classic BBC quiz show, Mastermind. It's pure chaos. Thanks to Magneto Magnetosson, for stepping in at short notice to host. Enjoy.

This is our NEW RELEASE review podcast, ONE HOT TAKE.What makes Nouvelle Vague special is Linklater's confidence in the hang. He understands that revolutions don't look revolutionary while they're happening. They look like people standing around, arguing about ideas, borrowing gear, shooting on streets they don't own, and trusting that something will cohere later.Synopsis:The behind the scenes of the filming of Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless (1960), a landmark of the French New Wave film movement.Stu Coote:The co-host of the (retired) Sinner Files movie podcast is the chief instigator behind our cinematic deep-dive brand. One Heat Minute ProductionsWEBSITE: oneheatminute.comTWITTER: @OneBlakeMinute & @OHMPodsMERCH: https://www.teepublic.com/en-au/stores/one-heat-minute-productionsSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/one-heat-minute-productions/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

"Here Comes Santa Claus" by Mrs. Miller. She was discovered by the announcer from "Laugh-In", which should tell you all you need to know.2. "Silent Night" by Wing. Wing Han Tsang was from Hong Kong and started singing as a hobby when she moved to New Zealand. Surprisingly, she made it kinda big. "South Park" even parodied her back in the day.3. "White Christmas" by Tiny Tim. There's also "Silent Night", featuring a spoken-word break where he takes aim at hypocrites, fornicators, and child molesters. You know, just regular Christmas caroler stuff. 4. "Little Drummer Boy" by William Hung. Isn't it crazy to think there's a whole generation who has no idea who this "American Idol" treasure is? 5. "I Got a Cold for Christmas" by the Three Stooges. Not terrible, but not exactly a classic.6. "Jingle Bells" by William Shatner, featuring Henry Rollins. Yes, THAT Henry Rollins.7. "Santa Claws Is Coming to Town" by Alice Cooper, featuring John 5, Billy Sheehan, and Vinny Appice. 8. "The Night Before Christmas" by David Hasselhoff. This one is extra cheesy, but did you expect anything less?9. "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" by Regis Philbin. This one has a cameo by a pre-Oval Office Donald Trump, who offers Rudolph a job in place of Santa.10. "Jingle Hell" by Christopher Lee. Yes, one of the greatest actors of all time. He dabbled in heavy metal later in life. This actually isn't his only holiday song, either. He also did covers of "The Little Drummer Boy" and "Silent Night".11. "Away in a Manger" by the Brady Bunch. This one only features the vocal talents of Marcia, a.k.a. Maureen McCormick. It's from an album called "Merry Christmas from the Brady Bunch".See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Director Edgar Wright's latest, THE RUNNING MAN, is an update of the Schwarzenegger-starring ‘87 sci-fi action film (and the ‘82 Stephen King novella). Josh finds just enough to recommend it, but Adam has a hard time finding the Wright in it all. And Michael Phillips joins Adam for a review of Richard Linklater's Paris ‘59-set NOUVELLE VAGUE, with both agreeing that the director's making-of-”Breathless” is “charming as hell.” Plus Massacre Theatre and more. On today's action-packed show, Sean and Amanda dive deep into the two newest films from one of their favorite filmmakers, Richard Linklater. Before diving in, they react to a handful of movie news headlines, including Tom Cruise's honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards, the new teaser trailer for the live-action ‘Moana' film, and Georgia Oakley's upcoming remake of ‘Sense and Sensibility,' starring Daisy Edgar-Jones (1:14). Then, they discuss ‘Nouvelle Vague' (16:06) and ‘Blue Moon' (28:11) and explain why they found the former to be an interesting exercise and the latter to be one of the best movies of 2025. Later, they break down what makes Ethan Hawke such a great actor and rank their five favorite performances of his career (46:07). Finally, Sean is joined by Hawke and Linklater to explain why 'Blue Moon' was the perfect project for a collaborative reunion, explore how they have evolved as filmmakers and performers over their illustrious careers, and discuss why they feel optimistic about the current state of moviegoing and the challenges both the industry and society face (56:29). Hosts: Sean Fennessey and Amanda Dobbins Guests: Ethan Hawke and Richard Linklater Producer: Jack Sanders Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Filmmaker Richard Linklater doesn't speak French, but that didn't stop him from directing a movie that's almost entirely in French. ‘Nouvelle Vague' focuses on the beginning of the New Wave of cinema, specifically Jean-Luc Godard and his landmark 1960 movie ‘Breathless.' "I know that sounds insane," Linklater says, "but me not having the language wasn't even in my top 10 concerns about if I could pull off the movie." Linklater spoke with Terry Gross about the impact of the French New Wave, and his other new film, ‘Blue Moon.' It's about Broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart, the former creative partner of Richard Rodgers. Also, Maureen Corrigan reviews the novel Heart the Lover by Lily King.
