American film critic Carrie Rickey has written the first biography of celebrated French cinema pioneer, Agnes Varda. Varda was born in Belgium but found her creative community in the southern French port town of Sete, which cemented her love for the beach and for many other things that would reappear in her films, especially the ordinary lives of working people. She once said that if you opened her up, you would find beaches inside her. After studying art she became a photographer, tutored by Georges Brassaï. When she turned her attention to film, she became the only female member of the so called Nouvelle Vague or New Wave in French cinema, alongside Francois Truffaut, Jean Luc Godard, Alain Resnais and Eric Rohmer. Defying categorisation she made both feature films and documentaries, zig zagging between the two, following her curiosity wherever it led for more than sixty years. Her marriage to fellow film-maker Jacques Demy was unconventional in that both were bi-sexual, but their love was enduring. Varda received an honorary Oscar and an honorary Palme D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. She died in 2019 at the age of 90, of cancer. She remains a revered figure in world cinema, admired by directors and audiences alike, more popular than in her lifetime. Biographer Carrie Rickey is an American film critic met Varda on several occasions informally at film festivals but never discussed the possibility of writing her biography. Her book A Complicated Passion: The Life and Work of Agnes Varda was written without the co-operation of Varda’s family but with the help of many of her collaborators and friends.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our Acteur Spotlight kicks off with six movies starring Delphine Seyrig, beginning this episode with Alain Resnais' Muriel (1963) and Marguerite Duras' debut as a feature film director, La Musica (1967) (co-directed with Paul Seban). We find that these two films about former couples discussing, debating, and negotiating how to live with their past make a good pairing for their existential contrasts as well as their thematic and structural similarities. And in Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto, a New Year's Eve viewing of Trading Places (1983), the Eddie Murphy/Dan Aykroyd comedy, is a reminder of a time when unabashed criticism of capitalism and white supremacy was the concern of mainstream Hollywood (coinciding with maybe the all-time historical nadir of representation of women in film); and two more Mikio Naruse films, Lightning (1952) and A Wanderer's Notebook (1962), both starring the versatile Hideko Takamine and based on works by Fumiko Hayashi, give the hopeful and despairing sides of the search for meaning in the midst of economic hardship and disappointing relationships.  Time Codes: 0h 00m 25s:    MURIEL (1963) [dir.

Parecia dia. Segundo ele, “essas senhoras me ensinaram que a vida segue.

Olivier discusses his architectural philosophy—shaped by influences such as Édouard Glissant's call to “act in your place, think with the world”—and the realities of designing in Vietnam's tropical context, where rain, heat, and humidity shape the rhythm of daily work. He reflects on building responsibly in a time of ecological change, how poetic gestures sustain creativity, and why uncertainty (“Au Vietnam, rien n'est jamais sûr”) is part of the country's charm and challenge. This is a conversation about architecture as adaptation, empathy, and imagination—rooted in place yet globally aware. The Ethnographic Optic: Jean Rouch, Chris Marker, Alain Resnais, and the Turn Inward in 1960s French Cinema (Indiana UP, 2024) traces the surprising role of ethnography in French cinema in the 1960s and examines its place in several New Wave fictions and cinéma vérité documentaries during the final years of the French colonial empire. Focusing on prominent French filmmakers Jean Rouch, Chris Marker, and Alain Resnais, author Laure Astourian elucidates their striking pivot from centering their work on distant lands to scrutinizing their own French urban culture. As awareness of the ramifications of the shrinking empire grew within metropolitan France, these filmmakers turned inward what their similarly white, urban, bourgeois predecessors had long turned outward toward the colonies: the ethnographic gaze. Cinema60 is back with a ghost guest in order to highlight some notable opinions on film. Dwight Macdonald, a celebrity film critic of the ‘50s and ‘60s who is now more remembered as a cultural critic and political pundit, had a lot to say about the dumbing down of high art to appeal to middlebrow tastes. Championing films that challenged audiences, he famously took on Alain Resnais' Last Year at Marienbad as one of the most difficult films to ever be embraced by American audiences. While he does not consider the film one of his favorites, he admires its techniques and ambitions. He would use it as a touchstone through his career to describe the type of film that pushes boundaries of what cinema can do and engages on a higher level. In this episode, Bart and Jenna respond to Macdonald, muse on the actual difficulty of such a film and use his word to illustrate their own mission statement. The following film is discussed:•Last Year at Marienbad (1961) L'année dernière à Marienbad Directed by Alain Resnais Starring Delphine Seyrig, Giorgio Albertazzi, Sacha PitoëffText discussed:• On Movies (1969) by Dwight McdonaldOther films mentioned:• Citizen Kane (1941) Directed by Orson Welles Starring Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Dorothy Comingore• Children of Paradise (1945) Les enfants du paradis Directed by Marcel Carné Starring Arletty, Jean-Louis Barrault, Pierre Brasseur• Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) Directed by Alain Resnais Starring Emmanuelle Riva, Eiji Okada, Stella Dassas• Breathless (1960) À bout de souffle Directed by Jean-Luc Godard Starring Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean Seberg, Jean-Pierre Melville• La Dolce Vita (1960) Directed by Federico Fellini Starring Marcello Mastroianni, Anita Ekberg, Anouk Aimée• Jules & Jim (1962) Directed by François Truffaut Starring Jeanne Moreau, Oskar Werner, Henri Serre

For over more than five decades the Serbian conceptual and performance artist Marina Abramović has used her own body as her artistic medium, exploring the human condition in works that are often feats of endurance, exhaustion and pain. From her earliest works such as Rhythm 0, in which Abramović invited audiences to freely interact with her however they chose, to her long-durational work The Artist is Present, she has put herself in danger at the mercy of audiences all in the name of art. Abramović talks to John Wilson about her unhappy childhood in the former Yugoslavia with strict parents who had both been war heroes. She recalls how at age 14, a dangerous game of Russian roulette led her to Dostoevsky's novel The Idiot and how the book and its author's life sparked her creative imagination. She also reveals how two films, Alain Resnais' enigmatic 1961 French New Wave classic Last Year at Marienbad, and Pier Paolo Pasolini's 1968 movie Teorema, starring Terence Stamp, have inspired aspects of her work.

In this wide-ranging conversation James and I discuss Glazer's methodology to adapt Martin Amis' Holocaust novel for the screen, including his determination to create two separate films inside one film: what we see (the bucolic family life of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss) and what we hear (the horrifying sounds of death from over the wall of the concentration camp next door). Glazer uses 21st century technology to tell this story to indicate that this film is not about history, but about the present moment, including provocative ideas about the ways we all try to compartmentalize and overcompensate to tune out the horrors of the world that make our own comfortable lives possible.  We also compare The Zone of Interest to other Holocaust works to discuss why it's so difficult to tell these stories with sensitivity and respect and without compromise, some of the most noteworthy sequences, and what the film has in common with Alain Resnais' masterful short film about Auschwitz, Night and Fog.  And of course we discuss some of the bad faith arguments from Zone of Interest haters, and some hot takes online from people who even if they saw and liked it, may not have grasped its point. Night and Fog is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel. Follow James Slaymaker on Twitter. James' book Time is Luck: The Cinema of Michael Mann, is now available in paperback and Kindle. When I first saw Hiroshima Mon Amour, this particular director went on the long list of names I wanted to cover. Alain Resnais is an internationally acclaimed film director, associated with both the Left Bank Group and the Nouvelle Vague. His preoccupation with the themes of time, memory and history, and his dazzling exploration of cinematographic technique, made him one of France's most distinctive and influential filmmakers for over 60 years, inspiring the likes of David Lynch & Michel Gondry. For this episode, previous guest and friend to the show Kate Blair (who joined me for Agnes Varda) returns for a delightful discussion on close to ten films of his, including a high recommendation of some of his short films as well at the end. Then I'm taking the rest of the month off to concentrate on prepping for the epic 1994 retrospective recording the first weekend of March. Thank you to Kate for a great conversation on a filmmaker I grew to love the more we talked about him.  Follow Kate: https://letterboxd.com/selective_kate

This week we're joined by our good friends Ian Rhine and Jake Serwin of the teriffic Clint Eastwood podcast Pod Casty For Me to discuss the Italian director Nanni Moretti and his 1993 personal essay/anthology film 'Caro Diario', awarded Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival in 1994 when Clint served as the Jury President. We discuss Moretti as subject within his own films, and how his arch and effacing tone offers perhaps a more palatable substitute to the films of a once-prominent filmmaker (now mired in controversy) known for his neurotic, self-referential films. Then, we discuss the film's stylistic markers that place it in conversation with not just the legacy of the Italian film industry, but with cinema as a whole. Finally, we talk about family planning and the wonderful world of vasectomies. (*Editor's Note* Aaron's procedure is in November, not Feburary as stated on the show. He's not sure why he said that, but wants listeners to know that he's not planning out his recovery watchlist 4 months in advance like a loser). Listen & Subscribe to Pod Casty For Me. On the 78th anniversary of the Atomic Bomb being dropped on Hiroshima, we look at some of the popular culture around that event. We start by discussing the 1980 song “Enola Gay,” by the 1980s British band Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark (OMD). We look at a brief history of the band, the success of the song both at the time and its historical legacy and a not-necessarily-obvious resonance it had in popular culture. After that, given the box office success of Christopher Nolan's “Oppenheimer,” we look some other films that take on the creation of the bomb in 1945. That includes the 1989 films “Day One” starring David Strathairn as Oppenheimer and “Fat Man and Little Boy,” starring Paul Newman and Dwight Schultz (who you may remember from “The A-Team” or “Star Trek: The Next Generation”) as Oppenheimer. We also briefly discuss the 1980 BBC mini-series “Oppenheimer” with Sam Waterston in the title role. We end with a brief mention of two other foreign language films related to the events: Alain Resnais' “Hiroshima Mon Amour” from 1959 and Akira Kurosawa's “Rhapsody in August” from 1991.

Ep. 169: Synecdoche, New York with Michael Joshua Rowin, plus Brakhage, Resnais, Duras Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw. I'm your host, Nicolas Rapold. I've been hosting a screening series recently called New Essentials at the Roxy Cinema in New York. This weekend I'm presenting Charlie Kaufman's directorial debut feature, Synecdoche, New York (2008), the sprawling story of a playwright (Philip Seymour Hoffman) attempting to stage a truly world-sized drama while navigating his wrecked personal life. For the latest episode, I discuss Kaufman's rich and strange and funny movie with critic Michael Joshua Rowin, who wrote about it for Reverse Shot. We also compare notes on the last things each of us has seen, including films by more adventurers in subjectivity: Stan Brakhage, Alain Resnais, and Marguerite Duras.
