Tonight's conversation tears apart one of the most dangerous fantasies modern people carry: the belief that a painless life automatically equals a healthy one. Entire identities now get constructed around comfort optimization, emotional sedation, curated peace, avoidance rituals, dopamine management, and psychological escape routes disguised as “healing.” Meanwhile, people continue repeating the same relationships, the same betrayals, the same loneliness, the same panic, the same emotional collapses wearing different faces and different names.

In this exploration of Jesus' identity, Hamish examines the weight of the Savior's declaration as the light of the world, contrasting the superficial "truths" of modern culture with the exclusive and inclusive nature of Christ. Drawing on the historical backdrop of the Festival of Tabernacles, the sermon illustrates how Jesus positioned Himself as the fulfillment of the ancient pillar of fire that once led Israel, yet He now seeks to illuminate the darkness within the human heart rather than just the circumstances surrounding it. The message emphasizes that following this light requires a difficult but necessary course: a total surrender of the self and a symbolic death at the cross to overcome personal sin and pride. Ultimately, Hamish concludes that this path leads to the beautiful possession of resurrection life—a continuous, life-long process of becoming like Christ and experiencing an enduring dividend of peace, joy, and love that far surpasses the world's fleeting happiness.Referenced Scriptures:Psalm 34Psalm 63:1–5Exodus (The Pillar of Fire)John 8:12Acts 2 (Pentecost)Philippians 1:6
In 1905 a scruffy young man holed up in his apartment in Bern, Switzerland, engaging in complex thought experiments regarding the nature of the universe. With frenzied focus, the physicist worked and reworked his calculations. Four mind-crunching months later, this man had rewritten much of what was known about how the world works. The man was Albert Einstein. He was twenty-six. The year 1905 is now famously called “the miracle year,” the moment Einstein peered into God’s design of the universe. Yet despite possessing a great scientific mind, Einstein said, “The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don’t know.” The Bible frequently points to the majesty of God reflected in His creation: “The heavens declare the glory of God” (Psalm 19:1), and Job predated Einstein’s words: “Can you probe the limits of the Almighty? They are higher than the heavens” (Job 11:7–8). But God’s creation glory is even greater than the expanse of universes: “In the beginning was the Word. . . .The Word became flesh” (John 1:1, 14). There are no mathematical calculations that can explain God’s extraordinary act of entering humanity in the person of Jesus Christ. God is not just “out there” in a universe we cannot begin to know, but He’s here alongside us, the Word among us, the light of life (1:4) whom we can know personally and intimately. When Christ was born in Bethlehem, that was the true “miracle year.”

12-SMJW 03-08-2026AM - Series: Special Message - Title: The Light of Life - Scripture: John 8:12-20
Darkness is opposed to the Light, and men love the darkness rather than the Light.
Darkness in the Scriptures has to do with the state of man as well as his walk.
Jesus the light of men is in men and those whom He is in are the children of light.
Of course, the Pharisees objected to His witness of himself.

Have you ever felt like you're waiting for a breakthrough that just won't come? In this powerful message from our all-site service, Wendy H. explores the theme of "Expect the Unexpected" and how God's timing is often far different—and far better—than our own.Drawing from the life of Moses and the prophecies of Isaiah, Wendy reminds us that even after 400 years of silence, God broke through the darkness at the perfect time. Whether you are walking through a season of "deep darkness" or simply waiting for your own "brass band moment," this talk will encourage you to seek a relationship with Jesus rather than just religious ritual.

Title: The Light of LifeSpeaker: Nate HoldridgeOverview: In this Advent message from John 1:4-8, Pastor Nate Holdridge explores three essential realities about Jesus, the Light of Life. First, the Light is integral—the eternal Word who gives life to all humanity and whose illumination reaches every person through creation and conscience. Second, the Light is victorious—shining in present-tense power through the resurrection, defeating the darkness that cannot overcome Him. Third, the Light is the One we need—which is why God sent John the Baptist as a witness pointing to Jesus, so that all might believe. Whether you're groping in darkness and need to believe for the first time, or you're a believer called to witness like John, this message reminds us that Christmas celebrates the arrival of the Light who cannot be defeated—the One for whom our restless hearts were made.Link to Sermon Notes

The Light of Life Series: The Gospel of Luke Scripture: Luke 11:33-36 Date: September 14th, 2025 Preacher: Joshua Kirstine The post The Light of Life first appeared on Disciples Church.
I Am the Light of the World 12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” 13 So the Pharisees said to him, “You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.” 14 Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, my […]
John 8:12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, "I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life." It's hard to tell whether Jesus immediately spoke to the crowd that remained after the woman's accusers left the scene, or if this occurred at another time. It is believed that John 8:1-11 was a later addition to the gospel, however, it certainly flows in a line of reason from the events of chapter 7 and those of this chapter. It makes sense that Jesus would make this comment after the differences of darkness and light were so obviously displayed. We are encouraged in our living to love with Jesus, to believe what Jesus believes and follow with Him in His purpose for life. That's what it means to follow Him. He is the Light of the world and His Life is the Light. So we are encouraged that the ones who follow Him will display the Light of His Life. I suggest that the love of God is the light of His life. God is love. Jesus is God. His love is the light of the world. There's obviously more to God than just love. For instance, God is holy, which means that His love is holy. There is no other love like His love, and we could say that about all of His attributes. I want to keep it simple for us today, by encouraging us to embrace Jesus' purpose, which is to glorify His Father by loving with Him. Jesus said in this verse, that if we follow Him, we will not walk in darkness. John reiterated Jesus' words in 1 John 1:7. “If we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” Then in 2:9-11 and 3:23-24 we see the relationship between walking in the Light and love. The one who says he is in the Light and yet hates his brother is in the darkness until now. The one who loves his brother abides in the Light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. But the one who hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes (2:9-11). This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us. The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us (3:23-24). Living to love with Jesus is God's call to us today. That's what having the light of Life looks like. May we follow Jesus as the Light of the world by being filled with the Spirit whom He has given us. The fruit of the Spirit is love. I invite you to become a partner in our ministry. Would you pray about becoming a regular supporter of Elijah Ministries and the Live to Love with Jesus ministry? Light produces growth, reveals the way and makes life on this earth possible. With that in mind, it is not surprising that Jesus compares Himself to the light of the world. Pastor Luke explains what is happening as Jesus is having this conversation and why it matters for us today.

Watch the news or browse the internet for long enough, and you'll naturally wonder what hope remains for us. From political corruption and misinformation to violence and oppression, this world seems lost and broken beyond repair. But in the Old Testament book of Isaiah (ch. 60-66), God shared His vision of a more hopeful future in which captives will be set free, darkness will give way to light, and those who mourn will be comforted. At The Story, we believe that God's promises remain as true as ever today and that His new world is still on the way. That's why, even though we see this world as it is, we hold fast to the hope we have in Jesus Christ. Because of his life, death, and resurrection, the best is yet to come. Join us for five Sundays starting April 27 as we explore Isaiah 60-66 and why the promises of God are worth the wait!
