Having a place in the heart of the city to proclaim the truth of Jesus practically share the love of Christ through care and hospitality (e.g. care ministries and international ministries) has been central to our existence. Writing to a church struggling under powerful forces, the last thing that you would imagine worthy of worship is a lamb! But that is exactly what is presented in John's vision. Again, utilizing this rich metaphor that is replete throughout Scripture, Johnpresents a lamb slain that makes a way for the scroll to be opened. What is this scroll? The book of life that records all names of those who are God's people. It is the death of the Lamb that makes a way for ‘persons from every tribe and language and people and nation'. This picture sets up a scene of absolute adoration, worship and praise. The death of Jesus has made a way. We find in the early chapters that John's Apocalypse is a letter that is written to seven churches in Asia Minor, but also a letter to be read aloud for all (and all are blessed in reading 1:3). Indeed, these are words of encouragement and challenge from Jesus himself. The call is for the Church, the Bride (19:7-8), to remain pure in the context of temptation and persecution, and to ultimately be victorious (5:5-6). The church in the Roman empire was under intense pressure. The emperors (e.g. Domitian, Nero) demanded absolute and singular worship. To not declare ‘Caesar as Lord' carried with it terrible physical, social and economic consequences. Revelation has possibly become the most discussed and speculated on, if not the most controversial, of all books in the Bible. This is not that surprising, considering the incrediblyabstract literary images that are contained in this wonderful piece of writing. A four-week teaching series is not going to come close to answer all the questions that could be addressed, but what we can do is focus on the key characters and themes that we can find in this powerful book.  Firstly, it is helpful to understand that Revelation is a mix of literary styles. The Good News, the Gospel, could simply be stated as this – Jesus is King! Jesus has defeated the powersof sin and death and invites all to participate in his Kingdom. It is a kingdom of life, not death. A kingdom of freedom from slavery. A kingdom equality and justice. A kingdom of power and grace. It is good news for everyone, everywhere. And for those who are in ‘the Kingdom', our task is to proclaim it! Proclaim the King.  Paul encourages the church in Colossae to make every opportunity for the good news to be shared, in the way to behave, conversations had and answers to questions asked. Sometimes we either are not aware of the opportunities we have to share the good news, or not courageous enough to take the conversation further. As the church in Colossians grappled with issues of race and religion, family and slavery – Paul brings a message of equality and freedom. We all have a king that rules our life. And no, I don't mean Charles!  We all surrender our lives to something or someone that ultimately rules us. The question is not whether we have a king but rather what king do we serve. And the king we choose to serve will ultimately enslave us. The list is endless - relationships, family, money, career, beauty, fitness, technology. And the consequences of this slavery are a whole range of behaviours that are unhealthy, undisciplined and ultimately ungodly. On the night before He died, Jesus gave His disciples a newcommand – to love one another. This doesn't seem all that new at first glance. The Old Testament law commanded God's people to love their neighbour (Leviticus 19:18) and the expert in the law knew the whole law could be summed up by “Loving God and loving people”.
