Love to hear from you; “Send us a Text Message”The hollowness beneath our culture is beginning to collapse, and young people are noticing. During this Holy Week conversation, we explore the remarkable spiritual awakening happening among Gen Z as they reject the moral emptiness of our hypersexualized society. When a culture "breathes out" God, it loses its moral compass—first objectifying women, then dehumanizing the unborn, and finally corrupting childhood itself. Yet amid this darkness, something extraordinary is happening. Young men especially are returning to church, scripture, and prayer in surprising numbers. This isn't merely about politics—it's about recognizing that a life without divine purpose leaves one standing on hollow ground. For those feeling the call to something deeper than our culture offers, we invite you to download Claymore (Miletus Christi) from our website—a battle plan for reclaiming authentic faith. What drives nutrition experts up the wall? In this candid, unfiltered conversation with EvidenceNutrition (Edin), Liam, and Rob dive deep into the most frustrating myths and misconceptions plaguing the nutrition space today. The gloves come off as they tackle head-on the absurdity of claims like "pomegranates make your breasts perkier" while breaking down why study methodology matters and why some claims are too ridiculous to even warrant scientific investigation. Through equal parts exasperation and humor, they expose the tactics used by content creators who prioritize engagement over accuracy. From the demonization of carbohydrates—"the primary energy source of the body"—to unfounded fears about seed oils and diet sodas, the conversation reveals how nuanced nutritional science gets flattened into misleading black-and-white narratives on social media. For Edin, who lives with Type 1 diabetes, these mischaracterizations aren't just annoying—they can be potentially dangerous. The episode takes a fascinating turn when the three break down the exact formula for creating viral fear-mongering content: take a beloved product, claim it contains something "banned in Europe," create a shocking visual, and watch the views roll in regardless of accuracy. This insider perspective helps listeners develop a critical eye for the content they consume.Perhaps most revealing is their discussion about creator integrity and brand deals, where they share stories about declining lucrative offers from companies whose products they couldn't honestly endorse. It's a rare glimpse into the ethical challenges nutrition content creators face in an industry where financial incentives can sometimes encourage compromise.Want to cut through the noise and understand which nutrition claims deserve your attention? This episode delivers equal parts entertainment and education from three creators committed to evidence over engagement. Is deconstructing your faith a path to deeper belief or total doubt? In this episode, Mike Stone breaks down the growing conversation around faith deconstruction—why people question Christianity, what leads some to walk away, and how others come out with an even stronger faith.
Plato argued that reality is found in perfect, unchanging ideals, while the physical world is merely a flawed reflection. Chassidic thought challenges this notion, asserting that G-d's presence is found precisely in the imperfect, physical world. Through the lens of this debate, we explored how this idea impacts our relationships, personal growth, and spiritual journey—showing that meaning and divine purpose emerge from engaging with reality as it is, rather than escaping to an idealized version of it.Key Takeaways:Plato's philosophy separates the ideal from the real, placing truth in abstract perfection.Kabbalah teaches that G-d's presence is in the here and now, within life's imperfections. The Torah's repetition of the Mishkan's construction emphasizes that holiness is not in a divine blueprint but in human action.Growth, relationships, and meaning are found in embracing life's struggles, not escaping them.True beauty is not perfection—it's the courage to build something holy in an imperfect world.Notes: See Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, The Dignity of Difference, for a detailed explanation of this idea of Plato and its impact on Western thought."G-d desired a dwelling in the lowly realms" (Midrash Tanchuma, Nasso 16); "This is what man is all about, this is the purpose of his creation and of the creation of all worlds, supernal and ephemeral" (Tanya, chapter 36).#Kabbalah #Judaism #Plato #Rabbi #chabad #Jewish #Bible #BibleStudy #Torah #TorahPortion #TorahLessons #Vayakhel #ParshatVayakhelSupport the showGot your own question for Rabbi Bernath? Pulitzer Prize finalist Éowyn Ivey is the author of "The Snow Child." The book captivated readers with its blend of folklore and the Alaska wilderness. Raised in Alaska, Éowyn's connection to the land is woven into her storytelling, creating atmospheric and emotionally resonant narratives. Before becoming a novelist, though, she worked as a journalist and then as a bookseller. Both shaped her approach to research and storytelling. As a journalist, she says she often felt constrained by the need to report just the facts, realizing that the full story often involved emotions, complexities and more nuanced truths that couldn't always be captured in a news story. This naturally led her to fiction, where she could immerse readers in themes like isolation, survival and the mystical interplay between humans and nature. Her latest novel, "Black Woods, Blue Sky," continues her exploration of myth, survival and the untamed beauty of Alaska. She says that there's a power in fiction, an empathy that forms between the book, the reader and the author. As a storyteller, she strives to create feelings and experiences that resonate — moments where a reader might think, “That's exactly what I felt, but I've never been able to put it into words,” or, “I've never felt so seen.” This is true for situations she's personally experienced and ones she hasn't — that's where her research comes into play. For Éowyn, writing is about more than just crafting a narrative, it's about discovering the metaphors and the poetry within the concepts she explores. When she set out to be a novelist, she never imagined it would go beyond the Pacific Northwest. But it has. Her writing is known by people all over the world. But at heart, she still writes for her fellow Alaskans.

(Acts 17:1-34) Our generation has more information available than ever, and yet there seems to be such a lack of truth. Every question must be brought to the Giver of truth! Today we look at three treatments of truth. How do we treat the truth? (0937250210) ----more---- Finding Truth in the Information Age This generation is a generation that has more information than any generation in history. We have more access to facts and to stories and to news at our fingertips than our grandparents ever could have imagined. This is an age where people know much and yet have more questions than they've ever had. Isn't it ironic that we have so much information, and yet there seems to be such a dearth of truth. Our age is an age of questions. People are asking so many things. And knowing the answers to the questions, or at least where to find the answers to the questions, is absolutely vital for a believer. One of the worst answers you can give to someone when they start asking serious questions about spiritual truth, and eternity, and God is to answer this way, or even to say, "Someone else said." It'd be much better to say the Bible, which is the word of God teaches. So in the end, we must come back to this. What does the Bible say? What does God have to say about it? The Foundation of Our Study We're beginning a brand new series of studies today on what the Bible says about a whole host of doctrinal issues and current issues. I'm very excited about this series, and I want to tell you right up front that before we give our opinion on anything, we must first lay the Bible foundation. We must begin with what thus saith the Lord. And then the application can grow out of that. Now though this is somewhat a topical series, I want you to know that we're going to deal with it. In a way that is expository. I mean by that, we're going to dig into the Word of God. We're going to let God speak for Himself. And today, I want to lay a little foundation for this series on what the Bible says by talking to you about three treatments of the truth. Three Treatments of the Truth: Thessalonica In Acts chapter number 17, the Apostle Paul is preaching, he's teaching the truth, and it's recorded for us that he's in three distinct cities. Now these three cities represent really three receptions or responses to the truth. In Acts chapter 17, beginning in verse number 1, he comes to a city known as Thessalonica. Thessalonica, of course, will be famous in history to Christians because there are two books of our New Testament written to the church at Thessalonica. And the Bible says in verse two that Paul, as his manner was went in unto them and three Sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, opening and alleging that Christ must needs have suffered and risen again from the dead. And that this Jesus whom I preach unto you is Christ. What a wonderful verse. In other words, he got right to the heart of the matter, and the heart of all of it is the person and work of Jesus Christ. If Jesus Christ is not who he says he is, nothing else matters. What you believe about the living word is directly connected to what you believe about the written word. Their response in verse 4 says, And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few. But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort. And gathered a company, set all the city on an uproar and assaulted the house of Jason and sought to bring them out to the people. They literally are going to bring such persecution that the believers in Thessalonica have to sneak Paul and his missionary team out of town, undercover of darkness to spare their life. So in Thessalonica, you have a group of people who believe, but you have a large segment of people that not only do not believe, they don't want anybody else to hear the truth. I call them the Thessalonican thieves. Because they wanted to steal the truth from others. In our current day, we have a lot of Thessalonican thieves. Not only do they not want to believe, not only are they not willing to obey the word of God, they don't want anybody else to have it either. And so they speak against God, and they speak against the truth. It's almost comical, if it wasn't so sad, that many of those who profess they don't even believe in God spend a whole lot of energy and time Trying to prove he does not exist. And arguing against his existence. If he doesn't believe that there is a God, what difference does it make? Why even argue against it? The fool has said in his heart, there is no God. And you're gonna deal with Thessalonican thieves in this generation. who are trying to steal the seed of truth out of the hearts and minds of people. Let's go to the end of the chapter, because I want to finish our study today with the second church, not the third. Three Treatments of the Truth: Athens The third church that's found in Acts 17 is the beginning of the church, at least, in Athens. You'll remember that Athens was a very secular city. It was a culture that was filled with false religion. As a matter of fact, the Apostle Paul stands up on Mars Hill in Acts chapter 17 and verse 22, and he says, You men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. That sounds like our world, doesn't it? Full of superstition. Full of people who profess to be spiritual, but they don't even know the spirit of truth. And then in verse 23, the Apostle Paul says, For as I passed by and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To the unknown God, whom therefore you ignorantly worship, Him declare I unto you. Oh, what a beautiful truth. He goes right on to preach to them the God that they needed to know. I would tell you that our world today is searching for the unknown God. Aren't you glad you know him? And if you know him, it's your responsibility to make him known. He begins with the Creator, and he comes all the way up to Christ. And the Bible says in verse 32, And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked. And others said, We will hear thee again of this matter. So Paul departed from among them, howbeit certain men claimed unto him and believed. Among the witch was Dionysius, the Areopagite. And a woman named Damaris and others with them. Are you noticing a pattern? That in every place where truth is given, some people receive and some do not. I call these people in Athens the Athenian Academia. And I'll tell you why. Because the Bible says here in Acts chapter 17 that they spend all of their time in either to tell or to hear some new thing. Oh, I believe novelty is the scourge of our day. Everybody wants something new. And the truth is not new. It may be heard for the first time, it is perennially fresh, but it's not new. It's eternal. It's connected to the God of truth who has always been. So you've got the Thessalonican thieves who are trying to steal truth away from others and then you've got the Athenian academia. Who just want to talk about it. They want to reason and philosophize and argue and debate, but they never arrive anywhere. Three Treatments of the Truth: Berea And then we come to the church, the city that's sandwiched between the two, and that's Berea. The Bible says in verse number 10 of Acts 17, And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea, who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica. And that they receive the word with all readiness of mind and search the scriptures daily, whether those things were so we've got the festival, ni and Thieves who want to steal the truth from others because they don't believe we have the Athenian academia who make it all intellectual and they want to reason and talk about lots of things. But many of them never came to the knowledge of the truth because they really weren't searching for answers. They just enjoyed talking about the questions. But here we have the great response. We have what we call the Berean believers. They wanted to receive the truth. They wanted to know the truth. I wonder, do you want to know the truth? If you do, you must do exactly what they did in Berea. You must search the scriptures daily. Seeking and Sharing the Truth That's really what this broadcast is all about. Encouraging people to study the Word of God. To find out what the Bible says. For In the words of Acts 17 verse 11, whether those things were so you see only when you've settled that in your own heart and mind. Can you speak with confidence when others ask you questions? I wonder today, do you really want to know the truth? And when you hear it, how will you respond to it? For a Christian, your faith should not be full of question marks. It should be full of periods and exclamation points, repeating what other people have said about the Bible is not enough. We must know the biblical reason behind what we believe. The past week saw an extraordinary admission from a major media company. News Group Newspapers, owned by Rupert Murdoch's NewsCorp, admitted that one of its papers- had been involved in incidents of unlawful activity. This related to its intrusion into the life of Prince Harry and took place over a period of 15 years from 1996. News Group also apologised to the Prince. It said it was private investigators rather than its journalists who were involved. The impact of this on journalists of long standing, working for media with strong reputations, will surely reinforce the mistrust that increasing numbers have in journalism. And yet with increasing numbers getting their news on social media sites- much of which is unchecked, and in some cases deliberately false, why are these platforms trusted more? This concept is explored through the lens of various elements of existence, emphasizing the interplay between the challenges and the joys inherent in life. The speaker articulates how each child born represents a unique world, underscoring the responsibility and significance of nurturing these new lives within the framework of halacha. The dialogue highlights how the difficulties faced during childbirth can serve as a catalyst for spiritual growth, ultimately leading to a deeper understanding of one's purpose and connection to the divine.

There's a topic that the church rarely addresses because it challenges long-held beliefs and practices. That topic is... Domestic abuse. And the failure of some church to protect victims. The statistics and stories are heartbreaking. Churches should be sanctuaries, yet when it comes to domestic abuse, this isn't always the case. Despite Biblical teaching on love, care, and justice, domestic abuse remains a hushed reality in some Christian communities. Victims often face isolation, shame, and a lack of genuine support inside their faith communities, making it difficult for them to find safety and healing. In this episode, Catherine is joined by Nancy Pearcey, an acclaimed scholar and author known for dissecting cultural issues from a Christian perspective. Nancy shares her insights on transforming churches into safe havens for women, particularly those experiencing domestic abuse. Her book The Toxic War on Masculinity: How Christianity Reconciles the Sexes explores the damaging cultural narratives about men and calls for a more biblical understanding of masculinity. KEY HIGHLIGHTS: Eileen Gray's Case: The episode opens with the heart-wrenching story of Eileen Gray, illustrating some churches' failure to support victims of abuse. Financial Dependency of Churches: Catherine and Nancy discuss how financial dependencies can influence churches to prioritize abusers over victims. 35-Year Longitudinal Study: Nancy mentions a study that found fathers have a significant impact on their children's faith, especially when they are positively involved. Critique of Darwinian Theory: Nancy discusses how Darwinian theory and societal stereotypes have contributed to harmful views of masculinity. Impact of Cultural Influences: The episode looks at cultural figures like Andrew Tate and Myron Gaines, who promote toxic masculinity ideals, and the need for a biblical response. Biblical Understanding of Masculinity: Both Catherine and Nancy advocate for a healthy, biblical view of masculinity and firmly condemn any form of abuse. Call to Action for Listeners: Listeners are encouraged to ensure their churches are safe havens and to leave any church that advises victims to stay in abusive relationships. Our churches should be sanctuaries, not battlegrounds for justice. If you or someone you know has been affected by domestic abuse, or you're passionate about creating safer church environments, don't miss this compelling discussion. Are you ready to follow your joy and trust your inner voice? Lenka Schultze shows how intuition leads the way.In today's episode, you will learn from Lenka Schulze, a Spiritual Guide, Author, and Educator. Lenka Schultze shares her unique journey of growing up in a communist regime, which she believes allowed her to be an “empty vessel” free from religious constraints, leading her to explore spirituality through her own experiences.Throughout this episode, Lenka emphasizes that intuition is not a mystical gift reserved for a few, but an innate sense that everyone has, much like sight or hearing. She explains intuition as our "first sense," present from birth, and not something we need to acquire, but rather something we must relearn to trust and cultivate. She describes the different levels of intuition, from survival-based instincts to a universal consciousness that connects individuals to their higher purpose. Her intuitive journey, she notes, has been about following her inner knowing rather than external teachings, which she refers to as “back engineering” her understanding through lived experience rather than study alone.Plus, she emphasizes the importance of trusting oneself and one's inner voice in navigating life, as well as staying grounded by tuning into the present moment.Tune in to Episode 180 of the Joy Found Here reconnect with your intuition and find joy by following your inner voice. In This Episode, You Will Learn:Growing up as an empty vessel: Lenka's journey from a communist regime (03:16)The nature of intuition: Your first sense, not your sixth (11:17)Levels of intuition: From survival instincts to universal consciousness (17:31)Following joy: The path to purpose and intuitive living (24:18)Trusting yourself: How intuition guides us through deception (27:04)Grounding in a noisy world: Simple practices to stay present (33:47)Connect with Lenka Schulze Ph.D.:WebsiteInstagramXGet Lenka's book!Let's Connect:WebsiteInstagram Hosted on Acast. Our modern culture often argues that Christian teachings on marriage and femininity are oppressive or out of touch. But if we peel back the layers of history, we discover a different story. The early Christian faith dramatically improved the lives of women. In this episode of CP/CW, Catherine is joined by prolific author and apologist Nancy Pearcey, who sets the record straight about the historical impact of Christianity on women. Nancy sheds light on the drastic differences between the treatment of women in ancient societies and the newfound dignity and status they received within the early Christian community. Key highlights include: Reformation of Roman Practices: Nancy explains how men in ancient Rome freely exploited women, and how the early church radically opposed this by advocating for the respect and dignity of women in marriage. Symmetry in Marriage: Hear about the New Testament teachings where Paul promotes equality in marriage, a concept that was unheard of during that time. Elevated Status: Discover why women found refuge and higher status in the early Christian church compared to ancient Roman society. Age of Marriage: Learn about how the Christian emphasis on raising the age of marriage from 12 to 18 greatly benefited young girls in the New Testament period. Jesus' Revolutionary Actions: Nancy takes us through instances in the Gospels where Jesus broke cultural norms by valuing and honoring women, providing a stark contrast to the prevailing views of the time. Modern Implications: Understand the surprising findings that show committed evangelical couples today experience the lowest rates of divorce and domestic abuse, contradicting the modern stereotype of evangelical men as patriarchal and abusive. Ongoing Global Impact: Delve into sociological studies that reveal how Christian teachings have empowered poor women more effectively than many modern feminist movements, particularly in developing countries. Understanding the radical teachings of the New Testament regarding women opens our eyes to the genuine freedom and dignity that Christianity offers. Over centuries, these teachings have profoundly transformed societies, raising the status of women across the globe. The data and historical evidence contradict the contemporary narrative that the Christian faith is oppressive to women. In reality, it provides a transformative power that elevates, empowers, and dignifies women in ways that are both historically and presently significant. In a world that is openly hostile to masculinity, does our faith offer a remedy? And what do we as Christian parents need to teach our sons and daughters? Consider these shocking examples of male-bashing in our culture: The Washington Post article by gender studies professor “Why Can't We Hate Men?” The New Stateman featured a British feminist writing, “ You can't live with them. You can't shoot them.” Trendy hashtag #killallmen T-shirts emblazoned with “So many men. So Little Ammunition.” Books titled: I Hate Men, The End of Men, and Are Men Necessary? A USA Today article states: “At today's universities, masculinity is almost never discussed except in negative terms, usually with the word ‘toxic' attached. John Stoltenberg, author of Refusing to Be a Man says, “Talking about ‘healthy masculinity' is like talking about ‘healthy cancer.'” Hugh Howey tweeted, “Testosterone is the problem… Women should be in charge of everything.” Testosterone is “a toxin that you have to slowly work out of your system,” said James Cameron, director of the movie Media researcher, Jim Macnamara, conducted extensive content analysis of more than 2000 mass media portrayals of men (including news, feature articles, talk shows, etc.) found that more than 75% of all media representations of men portrayed them as “villains, aggressors, perverts, and philanderers.” As parents, we are raising our boys in a toxic stew misandry (hatred, contempt, or prejudice against men or boys), and we should be concerned. Catherine's guest in this episode, Nancy Pearcey, has written the quintessential book defining the problem when it comes to masculinity in our culture, and she offers the only viable solution. The Toxic War on Masculinity: How Christianity Reconciles the Sexes walks us through this intricate and critical conversation. Nancy's personal journey from victimization with an abusive father, to agnosticism and radical feminism, to affirming biblical masculinity gives her a unique perspective on this contentious subject. Nancy unpacks the real roots of so-called "toxic masculinity" and discusses why understanding this topic is pivotal for Christian families today. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Origins of Toxic Masculinity: Misconceptions abound about toxic masculinity and its origins. Nancy dismantled the myth that it started with 1960s feminism, explaining its roots in the post-Industrial Revolution era. She explores how men, distanced from home-based work, lost their nurturing roles, which led to more egocentric and aggressive behaviors. Cultural Hostility Towards Masculinity: The episode delves into societal attitudes, giving examples like misandric merchandise and high-profile statements against men. A shocking survey reveals that a significant percentage of men feel victimized by society's hostility towards typical male behavior. Positive Masculinity Scripts: Nancy emphasizes the importance of promoting the 'Good Man' script—values of honor, duty, integrity, and responsibility—over the toxic stereotypes often portrayed in media and culture. Encouraging men to recognize their innate capacity for good can be more effective than labeling them toxic. Pandemic's Impact on Fatherhood: The discussion touches on how the COVID-19 pandemic brought men closer to their families. Nancy shares compelling personal experiences and data showing men's desire for more flexible work arrangements post-pandemic to stay connected with their children and homes. Balancing Career and Family: Highlighting the historical perspective, Catherine and Nancy discuss how modern families are finding ways to intertwine economic activities with family life, much like the pre-industrial era. They share inspirational anecdotes of men balancing work and family commitments creatively. Join Catherine and Nancy as they navigate the contentious and critical topic of masculinity, offering hope, clarity, and actionable insights for Christian parents in today's chaotic world. Nancy's Bio: Nancy Pearcey's latest book is The Toxic War on Masculinity: How Christianity Reconciles the Sexes. Her books have been translated into 20 languages. She is professor and scholar in residence at Houston Christian University. A former agnostic, Pearcey has spoken at universities such as Princeton, Stanford, USC, and Dartmouth. Blaise Pascal's Case for Christianity I. The Genius of Blaise Pascal A. Amazing life of Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) B. Pascal as an apologist; not a fideist (unlike Soren Kierkegaard) C. Nature of apologetics. Defend the Christian worldview as objectively true, compellingly rational, and pertinent to all of life (1 Peter 3:15) II. Pascal's Case for Christianity A. His apologetic be reconstructed. Order. Men despise religion. They hate it and are afraid it may be true. The cure for this is first to show that religion is not contrary to reason, but worthy of reverence and respect. Next make it attractive, make good men wish it were true, and then show that it is. Worthy of reverence because it really understands human nature. Attractive because it promises true good. B. We consider only two elements: the wager and the deposed royalty argument; there are more. See Douglas Groothuis, Beyond the Wager: the Christian Brilliance of Blaise Pascal (InterVarsity Academic, 2024). III. The Wager: Risks, Rewards, Options A. We should bet on God being rule instead of betting on God's unreality in light of the possible consequences. I should be much more afraid of being mistaken and then finding out that Christianity is true than of being mistaken in believing it to be true. B. Theoretical reason: Is P true? How can I know this? C. Prudential reason: What do I gain or lose by believing P? What actions should I pursue on this matter? D. The outcomes and belief states 1. Believer, if Christian God exists:Gain: eternal life; avoid hell. Infinite gainLoss: worldly pleasures. Finite loss 2. Believer, if Christian God does not exist:Gain: pleasures of religion. Finite gain Loss: worldly pleasures and truth. Finite loss 3. Unbeliever (atheist or agnostic or member of other religion), if Christian God exists:Gain: worldly pleasures. Finite gainLoss: eternal life; gain hell, infinite loss 4. Unbeliever, if Christian God does not exist:Gain: worldly pleasures. Finite gainLoss: nothing. E. Given the stakes, we should investigate the claims of Christianity with an open mind and open heart and not be indifferent. There are only three sorts of people: those who have found God and serve him; those who are busy seeking him and have not found him; those who live without either seeking or finding him. The first are reasonable and happy, the last are foolish and unhappy, those in the middle are unhappy and reasonable. IV. The Human Problem and Puzzle A. What sort of freak then is man! How novel, how monstrous, how chaotic, how paradoxical, how prodigious! Judge of all things, feeble earthworm, repository of truth, sink of doubt and error, the glory and refuse of the universe! (131/434). B. How to live with the human burden in light of reality; “deposed royalty” who can be restored through Jesus Christ C. What are the options? We will look at two “live hypotheses” V. A True, Rational, and Significant Explanation. A. True explanation of the human condition: one that agrees with objective reality; factual; realism. B. Rational explanation: one that explains who we are in accordance with the evidence and sound reasoning. C. Significant explanation: one that gives us value, meaning, and realistic hope for being human in the world. Philosophical anthropology is a very important part of any worldview. D. Manner of explanation: abduction (inference to best explanation) VI. Views of Being Human: The New Age Worldview A. New Age or spiritual worldview: Ken Wilber, Oprah Winfrey, Deepak Chopra 1. Background belief on humanity a. Pantheism: everything is divine. b. Monism: all is one (or nondualism) c. Morality is not absolute, but good and evil dissolve into a universal and impersonal oneness. 2. New Age view on humanity a. Human nature is really a divine nature: we are one with an impersonal deity. b. Human problem: we have forgotten our true identity as divine, one with all things, and unlimited. c. Human solution: Find the divine within through meditation, yoga, self-realization seminars. 3. Questioning New Age philosophy a. Human beings are limited in power and goodness; this is evident and not a delusion or matter of ignorance. b. There are moral realities that reveal a moral dualism: good and evil; right and wrong; virtue and vice. Rape is always wrong; kindness is better than wanton cruelty. VII. Christianity: Deposed Royality A. Background belief: personal theism—God as Creator, Lord, Judge B. Pascal's point can be strengthened by natural theology: arguments for God's existence from nature and in accord with reason. C. Human nature: created in God's image and likeness (Genesis 1:27) 1. Uniqueness of humanity: ethics, culture, language, religion 2. Human greatness: creativity, intelligence, etc. (#113/348) Thinking reed. It is not in space that I must seek my human dignity, but in the ordering of my thought. It will do me no good to own land. Through space the universe grasps me and swallows me up like a speck; through thought I grasp it. 3. Human dignity: image-bearers of God (Psalm 8:3-5) 4. Disjunction from the rest of the living world; different in kind, not just degree D. Human problem: we are fallen, warped, alienated, deposed 1. Human evil: sexism, racism, pettiness, greed, envy, ad nauseum 2. Our moral and spiritual corruption (Psalm 14:1-3; Mark 7:21-23) 3. Corruptio optimi pessima: “There is nothing worse than the corruption of the best.” 4. The essential problem: pride, self-centeredness, egotism (Romans 3:9-20) 5. Escaping our condition through diversion Diversion. If man were happy, the less he were diverted the happier he would be, like the saints and God. Yes: but is a man not happy who can find delight in diversion? E. Neither angel nor beast, but human It is dangerous to explain too clearly to man how like he is to the animals without pointing out his greatness. It is also dangerous to make too much of his greatness without his vileness. It is still more dangerous to leave him in ignorance of both, but it is most valuable to represent both to him. Man must not be allowed to believe that he is equal either to animals or to angels, nor to be unaware of either, but he must know both. F. Humans! Wretched and great G. The reality of death; life kills us all; finite time to figure it all out (Hebrews 9:27). VIII. Finding Truth, hope, and Purpose A. The human condition requires a radical, transcendent cure B. Jesus Christ provides this liberating cure for all people 1. Jesus: You must repent (Matthew 4:17). 2. Jesus provides forgiveness, reconciliation, and restoration (John 3:16-18; Romans 5:6-8: Ephesians 2:1-10) 6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:6-8). 3. The message is liberating for everyone; we are all deposed royalty (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 4:12; I Timothy 2:5-6). C. Being human with knowledge, hope, and integrity 1. Jesus is a God whom we can approach without pride and before whom we can humble ourselves without despair. 2. A world view that makes sense of oneself and others 3. The strength to love and serve through Jesus Christ, “the Mediator” (Pascal's term) The Christians' God is a God who makes the soul aware that he is its sole good: that in him alone can it find peace; that only in loving him can it find joy: and who at the same time fills it with loathing for the obstacles which hold it back and prevent it from loving God with all its might. 4. Provides incentive to give oneself selflessly to God and God's liberating program for humanity. 5. Know then, proud man, what a paradox you are to yourself. Be humble, impotent reason! Be silent, feeble nature! Learn that man infinitely transcends man, hear from your master your true condition, which is unknown to you. Listen to God.
