For the transcendental and numinous things, sometimes there are no words. But art—paintings, sculpture, music, film—can knock us sideways a little and help us see something, or understand a fleeting meaning, a dream we've woken from, that we try to hang onto. He was a successful Wall Street investment guy for decades, but he had a deep love of art and art history; after brush with death and a re-conversion to his Catholic faith, Stev Auth applied both of those gifts in service of his lay apostolate of evangelization. Today we talk about his new book—Visions of the Divine: An Artistic Journey into the Mystery of the Eucharist (Sophia, 2025)—and how Our Creator speaks to us through his artists, his creative creatures, on Almost Good Catholics. The book is filled with colorful photographs of inspiring masterpieces but small enough to carry with you to the museum or to read under a tree in the park. You can also read it with your computer at hand to look up the paintings online and magnify them as you read along with Steve's conversational narrative (which is mostly how I read it). We give titles to indicate someone's position but that doesn't mean that is their name. Our Creator has the title God and Lord but that describes what He does, not who He is.
Since our Creator and Redeemer's love for us is deeper than our suffering, we are comforted. How does God comfort us?1. Our Creator comforts others by giving us hope in our suffering. (v.73-74)2. Our Redeemer shows us the source of comfort: His love. (v.75-77)3. Our covenant LORD comforts us when we: a) meditate on the Word, b) fellowship with believers, c) pray to respond well to suffering. (v.78-80)How can we receive comfort? When has God blessed us by seeing another suffer?/reverse? 2Cor.1:3-9How many other places have we tried to go for comfort? Psalm 23:5What are the simple things we need for comfort? Romans 15:3-5
Humans are very sensitive creatures. Our Creator made us so we can delicately know what's right.

"There are different ways of saying “again” in Greek. The one here is kind of odd. If you were to check it out in your Bible you'd probably see a little note next to the word “again.” If you go to the margin it will explain the note. It will tell you that the word “again” can also mean “from above.” “You must be born again.” Or, “You must be born from above.” One words, two definitions. And both work. Every one us was birthed once … physically. But you are not just a physical creature. We're kind of like “hybrids” – both physical and spiritual. And for us to be what we were meant to be, a spiritual birth … a “born again,” a “born from above,” is required, too. Our Creator must re-create, Jesus says. … So … have you been “born again … from above”?" Stephen Pattison, Lead Minister

In the first episode, host Dr. Mimi Haddad meets with Rev. Dr. Aída Besançon Spencer to discuss Bible translation. Aída considers the different goals of translation teams from translations focused on a word for word translation; to meaning for meaning; to thought for thought and those that are a paraphrase. Each translation team from the NRSV, to the NIV, KJV and the ESV elevate their priorities in ways that are often helpful. In addressing the complexities of Bible translation, Aída gave the following helpful insight. She said: Translators are caught between rendering Form vs. meaning. A “formal translation”/formal-equivalence/literal/word for word/linguistic= Translation tries to preserve form (syntax and sentence structure) of the original to convey meaning. The emphasis is the original text, E.g. NRSV, NAS. It Allows the reader to interpret. A “dynamic-equivalence”/functional-equivalence/cultural =Translation expresses the original meaning in the natural form of the receptor language. The receptor language is emphasized. Translators seek equivalence in meaning or thought for thought translation, E.g., TEV, NEB. It does more interpretation for readers. A “paraphrase”=A freely rendered restatement (of another translation) of the author's thoughts in different words. But it is not a commentary, e.g. Living Bible, The Message. Aída cited those who contribute to the ESV team, noting their commitment to male-authority. She also expressed her preference for the NRSV assessing how the different translations render the crucial text 1 Tim 2:4–5—as it explains the work of Christ. She said: “who desires all people (anthrōpōs) to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men (anthrōpōs), the man (anthrōpōs) Christ Jesus,” ESV “who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,” NIV “who wants all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, (NASB) “Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (KJV) “who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God; there is also one mediator between God and humankind, Christ Jesus, himself human, (NRSVupdated)+ CEB “God wants everyone to be saved and to know the whole truth, which is, There is only one God, and Christ Jesus is the only one who can bring us to God. Jesus was truly human. (CEV)-a dynamic equivalent “Our Creator longs to set all people free and guide them into the full understanding of the truth. For there is only one Great Spirit, and only one who can bring the Great Spirit and human beings together in peace. That one is Creator Sets Free (Jesus) the Chosen One, who is himself human.” (First Nations Version) “Our Savior God wants all humans to be saved and to come into knowledge of truth. For God is one, one is also a mediator between God and humans, human Christ Jesus, the One having given himself as a ransom on behalf of all” (ABS). 1 Timothy NCCS ABS 48-51 For clarity on confusing passages that seem to diminish the dignity, value and agency of women or minorities, Aída recommends Bible translation teams comprised of men and women who do not unite in their preference for male-leadership as the ESV translation team does. Aída also celebrated the diversity of opinion on the NIV translation team which is led by expert Bible translators who differ on their view on women's leadership. It's always better to move beyond a single narrative on key issues. Aída discussed the NT and OT texts that challenge 3 New Testament passages (1 Tim. 2:11-15; Eph. 5:21-23) which routinely eclipse the many passages that demonstrate women's leadership, like Acts 2:2-21; Gal. 3:28 and passages that demonstrate the leadership of Huldah and Deborah. Aída ends by emphasizing the oneness of man and woman, cited in Genesis 1:26-30 as both were called to rule over the world together, in a world without sin. Paul picks this up in Galatians 3:28, we are clothed in Christ—a purple robe, our true identity. In considering marriage, specifically in Eph. 5. Aída explained that Ephesians 5:18-21 is one sentence in Greek, with 2 main ideas: “And do not get yourself intoxicated with an intoxicating substance, in which is wild living, but be filled with the Spirit. What does it mean to be filled with the Spirit? Paul then uses 5 participles to describe what it means to be filled with the Spirit: “speaking to one another in psalm and hymns and spiritual songs, Singing Making melody in your heart to the Lord Thanking always for all in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to Father- God Submitting yourselves to one another in fear/respect of Christ.” Verse 22 has no verb in the best Greek manuscripts: “the women…to own husbands as to the Lord…” Aída will return next month to address Bible translation as it has been used to further abuse and ethnic prejudice rather than human flourishing. The fact that Ally and I are getting to dialogue with Doc H about the joy of being human here at DCC, which is located high in the Rocky Mountains seems especially fitting because there's just something about looking at the grandeur of that mountain range, the peaks of which are already flocked with early season snow, heralded by a brilliant blue sky and groves of Aspen trees waving their golden leaves like pom poms that amplifies the joy of belonging to a God who created this kind of exquisite beauty. Speaking of beauty, today's conversation is going to take us on a super scenic tour comparing how the beginning of this divine love story we call the Bible – the genesis, if you will, of our relationship with God - unfolds much like a wedding: we find a metaphorical betrothal in Exodus, when the only true God - who breathed this glorious universe into existence – effectively gets down on one knee and asks us to spend the rest of our lives with Him. Then if you really lean in and listen, you'll hear the echoes of wedding vows in Leviticus – I promise that book isn't just about Mosaic law and communicable diseases, y'all! And when we get to the redemptive history recorded in the book of Numbers, we discover the relational rubber hits the road hard because the Israelites have moved past their honeymoon stage with God and are learning how to live day-after-day with Him in a desert where they're often disappointed and uncomfortably dependent upon their heavenly husband for provision and protection. The Bible isn't a rule book, or a textbook, or a collection of benign morality tales. It is the true story of what it means to be human – created by a perfectly loving God, in the very image of His trinitarian personhood. Genesis 1:26-27 clarifies that He created us in the image of the divine US - of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit. Saint Augustine expounded on that mysterious truism when he declared that, “Only the Christian God exists in perfect community among Himself,” which also means that to be created in God's image is to be hardwired for real relationship. The trinitarian God of the Bible is self-sustaining. He didn't create us because He needed a bunch of mindless minions to do His bidding or who were somehow obligated to Him in blind allegiance. God created us on purpose for a purpose, as Jeremiah exults, His plans for us include a hope and a future and Paul adds that His plans for us will ultimately lead to our good and His glory. Our Creator is not some uni-browed bully, waiting to smack us over the head with a big Bible if we step out of line, y'all. He is instead a compassionate Redeemer, who loves us more than we can possibly ask or imagine. The joy of being human must be inextricably married to the experiential truth that God lovingly planned us into existence or it's simply theoretical...

Our Creator does not promise us that we will not have trouble in our lives, He does promise us that when bad things happen He will be there.
We're all looking for that ticket to happiness. What is it we are missing and how can we get it so we are always happy? Our Creator designed us to find the sweet secret of happiness within only in HIM. Scripture refers to this inner happiness as contentment. The Hebrew word was autarkeia and it […]

One gives life abundant and eternal and is given to enjoy and partake. One gives profoundly moral wisdom but is forbidden.Let's look at Genesis and ask ourselves 2 questions as we do:God, what are you saying to me today?God, what do you want me to do about what you're saying to me today?CONTEXTPerhaps the older of the two versions of creation. Certainly the more personal one. We don't just see God as the massive deity who spoke all creation into existence. We see him here as a personally involved, master craftsman. One who gets his hands dirty and blows the paint dry with his own breath. The Lord God placed Adam in the garden in Eden with two unique trees. One gives life abundant and eternal and is given to enjoy and partake. One gives profoundly moral wisdom but is forbidden.SERMON Who is God?What has he done?Who am I?What do I get to do?How?Sovereign CreatorGod has created me in his image on purpose for a purpose.Someone God personally crafted in his image & breathed life into for his glory & creation's good.Work & tend his garden right where he placed me for the privilege & blessing that it is. Work for/serve my Lord God as a priestly-servant in this world from a rhythm & posture of rest where he has sovereignly put/placed me.YHWH or Lord as in personal, relatable God whose authority & rule I am under.God placed/put me where I am at rest.A priestly-servant & protector in the Lord God's world.I do his priestly-servant work in the garden of this world on his behalf & as his image bearer.I do his priestly-servant work where I live, work, learn & play on his behalf & as his image bearer. I do it by representing people to God & God to people.Abundant ProviderPlaced me at rest in the middle of abundant resources where I live, work, learn & play.A priestly-servant & protector fully resourced for the Lord God's work where I live, work, learn & play.Leverage the Lord God's infinite resources to love God & love people by multiplying image bearers for his glory & our good.Being a bright, salty image-bearer who's out to nurture the garden of this world like a priestly-servant would: with unconditional love.Sovereign WisdomGiven us sovereign wisdom in the form of his word. Also, the freedom to rebel against him.His beloved; A rebellious former servant with a badly corrupted image of God who's forsaken his priestly-servant role in this world by believing a lie that God cannot be trusted.Repent & believe that God wants me back & has made a way for me to become his shining & salty image-bearer again.Repent of my sins against my sovereign creator & believe that he's fully trustworthy as seen in his love shown to me through the cross of Jesus Christ.CONCLUSIONSo the applications are laid out there in this chart. But the specific thing that God is calling you to may not be in that chart. You can still repent and believe that he is fully trustworthy. Repent of your sins against the Lord God today. Today is the day of salvation. Turn from your wicked, doubting ways to Christ Jesus as the Lord and Savior of your life. Turn your life over to him today. Two trees. One that brings life, abundant and eternal. One that brings death when approached on one's own terms. We either trust God and take him at his word, repeating life, or we go our own way which leads to death. That's the difference between the narrow way and the broad way. Bottom line: Humanity relates to our Creator by finding wisdom and life on his terms instead of ours. Humble surrender.Applications:Invitation““Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”” Acts 2:36-39 NIVBottom line: What is God saying to me right now? What am I going to do about it? Write this down on a sheet of paper. What I hear you saying, Lord, is ___________________.[my name] is going to believe/do __________________________________________________ as a result. Finally, share this with your Home or Mission group this week when you gather as a testimony about what God is doing in your life. You don't have to get too specific to give him praise.PrayNOTESFrom Wilmington's Bible Handbook:It's primeval history (universal world history) of the world (universe) made up of 5 stories with the same structure. Your Name #RTTBROS #nightlight "But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine." - Isaiah 43:1 (KJV) Our names hold great power and meaning. They are given to us by those who love us, and they represent our identity. Yet in this fallen world, we often feel defined not by our names, but by our shortcomings and sins. The enemy seeks to reduce us to our worst moments, calling us by labels like "liar," "addict," or "failure." He wants us to believe these sins are our true identity. But God sees us differently. Our Creator knows us intimately - every strength, every weakness, every struggle. Yet He chooses to call us by name. To Him, we are not defined by our sins, but by His love and redemption. When God called Jacob in Isaiah 43:1, He used both his birth name and his God-given name Israel. This shows that God sees our full identity - both who we have been and who He is shaping us to become through His grace. Today, remember that your identity is not found in your failures or sins. Your true name - the one by which God calls you - is "beloved," "redeemed," "child of God." Let His voice drown out the accusations of the enemy. Rest in the assurance that the One who formed you claims you as His own. Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me by name. Help me to find my identity in Your love rather than in my sins. May I walk confidently as Your child today. Amen. https://linktr.ee/rttbros Be sure to Like, Share, Follow and subscribe it helps get the word out. https://linktr.ee/rttbros

Have you ever thought, “I could never be a missionary,” or, “I'm not cut out for missions. That's for ‘those people'”? More than 2,000 years ago, Jesus commanded His followers to make disciples of all nations. What you may not realize is that this command—the Great Commission—applies to every Christian. It's not a suggestion or an idea. It looks different for every believer, but the bottom line is that we don't get to cherry-pick our destiny. Our Creator calls us to take the gospel to the ends of the Earth. That's huge. But it's also special because it means that God has a role for all of us—even you. You are uniquely wired by God to live a life on mission—to have an eternal impact on people's lives. This is what extraordinary purpose looks like. Have you given God your yes? Hi friends! This week I dive into my faith after religious abuse. My faith is constantly changing as I navigate life after satanic ritual abuse and religious abuse. I'm very grateful to be able to connect with my higher power after 17ish years of denial, 17 years of putting my faith on a book shelf. I could talk about this topic for a long time, I love faith! Today, I revisit childhood and my relationship with good verses evil, how I put my faith on a shelf during my years of denial, and how I regained faith in order to escape the cult and recover. My favorite part of faith is my relationship with my higher power, whom I choose to call God, or Our Creator. The only one I fully trust. The only source that I trust enough to to give my will too. His way, not mine. Much love. Kibbi

There are normally two camps when it comes to mental health: embrace it or toughen up. Since Covid, the number of people struggling with mental health issues has spiked and continues to climb. In a world that grows increasingly more secular per day, the search for the antidote for this growing epidemic has come up fruitless. Dr. Ed Welch, a psychologist and licensed counselor joins host Joseph Backholm to wade into the weeds of the mental health crisis. From a biblical worldview, they dissect the difference between spiritual warfare vs. living in a fallen world, emphasize that we were designed to need help, and how to properly handle our complex emotions. Our Creator wants to know what's on our hearts, talk to him and lean into his peace and promises.
