“I believe the Bible is literally true.” Such is the claim of many self-professed biblical “literalists.” Academics and journalists who study American religion also often describe conservative Christians, in particular, as “literalists.” But in this episode, the first of several related to the understanding of the Bible within popular American Christianity, Dan argues that no one is actually a literalist. In fact, he argues that the idea of biblical literalism is incoherent. Why? Listen in and find out! Daniel 9:24-27 – Past, Present or Future: Answering the Symbolist

Bob Hunt of Zion's Hope in Winter Garden, Florida concludes his five-part series “Past, Present or Future”. The goal of this series is to look at Daniel's profound prophecy, found in Daniel 9:24-27, one verse at a time. This text is hotly debated and two positions appear to rise above the rest. The first view, which Bob labels the Symbolist view, determines that the events described by Daniel have substantially all occurred in the past. Also, any reference to years is not to be taken literally, but more symbolically with a theological point of view. In addition, Daniel's 70th week began in the first century and continues until the return of Jesus Christ. The second view, labeled the Literalist view, considers Daniel's 70 weeks to be literally understood. The events are real events in time and the passage of time can be reasonably calculated. The Literalist understands the events of the 70th week as not having taken place, thus a future fulfillment is necessary. In this last session Bob will conclude by answering the Symbolist question, “if this week is so important and future coming, then why is Daniel 9:27 the only Scripture text mentioning it?” The answer to this question will demonstrate a future fulfillment of this week and show how many other texts tie nicely into Daniel's 70th week prophecy. Finally a conclusion will be made concerning Daniel's prophecy. The Literalist point of view in these five sessions is more than reasonable. Careful consideration should be given when determining which viewpoint to hold. We need always to consider how the original audience would have interpreted this prophecy. It is highly unlikely that Daniel would have received this message in any other way other than literally.

We've gone video. This is the audio version of the video file. We take a deeper look at the scripture passage the Lord read in his first public appearance in the synagogue in Nazareth. The Lord cut straight lines, he rightly divided the Word of Truth as Paul teaches us to do in 2 Tim 2:15. We note how the Lord's handling of what we know as Isaiah 61 is perfectly consistent with the Days in scripture that we looked at last time.

#355: How to deal with literalists who constantly correct you. You know who we're talking about, that person who has to be sure every detail of ‘your' story is accurate enough to be used as a deposition. Example: You: “Then a blue car zipped in and took my parking spot” … Literalist interrupts: “Actually, it was more like a powder blue car.

This is part one of a two part lecture on Osama bin Laden. Part Two  will focus on his Declaration of War on the United States (1996).  Osama issued two Declarations of War, in 1996 and in 1998.  The second was called a “fatwa.” Both are available on the internet.  I suggest that you download the 1996 declaration so you can follow along as we discuss it.   My goal is to show bin Laden's background and view of world conflict.  I am not arguing with him.   I tell students that if their thinking after analyzing a document has not changed, then no learning had taken place.  I tell students that Osama made five key points.  I agreed with him on four.  We parted ways when he said Muslims should kill Americans.  I did this to model openness of mind, and to help students realize that agreeing with Osama on some point did not mean you supported what happened on September 11.  This was a class lecture.  There may be a few times when I talk about readings and assignments.  Sorry about that.  Here are some terms and references that some people don't know. Dawa: Preaching about Islam, spreading Islam Ansar:  The companions (supporters) of Mohammed were called the Ansar.  Scholars (Ulema): The recognized scholars of Islamic law.  Mujtihad means one.    Fatwa: An opinion by a recognized religious scholar on how to interpret Islamic law.  Apostate:  One who has abandoned the faith.  Qibla:  The site faced while praying.  Today it is Mecca.  Originally it was Jerusalem.  Night Journey:  God took Muhammed on a flying creature to Jerusalem. Al Aqsa: The sacred place, i.e., the mosque in Jerusalem.  This term is in the Koran.  Sharia: Islamic law, both the specific rules and the general principles.  Shirk/Mushirk:  One who has something in the heart ahead of God, i.e., one who worships a false god or false belief or false authority.  Umma/Ummah:  The Muslim community or Muslim people (worldwide).  Grand Mufti bin Baz.  Head of Saudi Ulema. Literalist interpretations.  Close to monarchy.  His fatwa said that because of danger from Saddam, it was acceptable to admit US soldiers Abdullah Azzam.  Palestinian professor who influenced Osama.  He was killed. Ahmad Yassen.  Spiritual leader of Hamas.  Killed by the Israelis. Omar Abdur Rahman.  Blind Egyptian sheikh who planned NYC attacks. In US prison. William Perry.  Secretary of Defense when the Khobar attack occurred.Abdul Aziz.  Founder of Saudi Arabia.  Americans call him ibn Saud. Bernard Lewis & Samuel Huntington.  Professors who teach Clash of Civilizations.  Sykes-Picot: WWI plan to partition the Arab world into zones of Western influence.  Wahab.  Early religious reformer whose strict teaching called for a return to the founding principles of the faith.  Movement is called Wahabism or Salafi.  Somalia: US forces ambushed.  Black Hawk Down movie Khobar, 1996.  Attack on U.S. base in Saudi ArabiaKhost Tunnel Complex:  Built in Afghanistan during Russian War.  US financed it.  Qana Massacre: Israelis attack UN post in 1998.  100+ Lebanese refugees killed. USS Cole, 1998.  US warship bombed by Zodiac boat.  Nearly sank. The Looming Towers is superb.

This week we conclude our series on Qui-Gon Jinn and Prophecy in Claudia Gray's Master & Apprentice by examining his turn to a more literal interpretation of prophecy. I look at it from an in-universe perspective and discuss the Scriptural and Theological basis for this turn in Christian tradition. It gets at the origins of this podcast: a Virgin-born Promised One who restores the Cosmic Order by coming back from the pit of death. The pull list highlights a pair of SW-connected indie comics, Charles Soule's and Scott Snyder's Undiscovered Country and George Mann's Engineward. I also give my fresh-out-of-the-oven thoughts on the High Republic panel from NYCC Metaverse that aired earlier today. You can watch that panel, which did literally nothing to assuage my excitement for this new era of SW stories, right here. Thanks for listening, and MTFBWY. Follow me on Twitter and Instagram.

Biblical Theology of the Spiritual World

Explore a summary of D. Burnett's paper, "So shall Thy Seed Be (as the stars)": Genesis 15:5 in 2nd Temple Jewish Thought" In Genesis 15:5-6 we read, "And he brought him outside and said, 'Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.' Then he said to him, 'So shall your offspring be.' And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness." Burnett asked the question if this verse was not only about quantity. Could the promise to Abraham refer to quality also? Consider Genesis 17:5, Genesis 26:4, and Romans 4:13-18. The issue is that reading Paul's use of Genesis 15:5 in light of this qualitative interpretation would place him within the context of already well-established deification (or angelomorphic) traditions in Early Judaism that see the destiny of the seed of Abraham as replacing the stars as the gods (or angels) of the nations. There seems to be a close connection between being multiplied "as the stars of heaven" and the "inheritance" of "all these lands." This will result in "all the nations of the earth" being blessed. Consider Romans 4:23-25. The issue is that the ideas of becoming "heir of the cosmos," a "father of many nations," and the hope of the resurrection are not separate promises, but are understood by Paul as constituent parts of the one promise made to Abraham in Genesis 15:5 in becoming as the stars of heaven. Explore the Intertestamental thought including Philo of Alexandria and Sirach 44:21. Consider James 2:19, "You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!" The demons are afraid because God is one. The oneness of God and totality of God's rule suggests that at some point there will be trouble for the demons. Consider Exaltation/Theosis and resurrection and astral immortality in early Judaism. Consider Daniel 12:1-3 and Paul's citations of these various verses in Genesis. A complex of tradition ties a familiar Christian theological concept (glorification) back into the Divine Council family worldview and the Deuteronomy 32 worldview. Explore the angelic priesthood. Consider our church liturgy and Revelation 14: 1-5. Consider the lists of tribes in the Old Testament, of which there are more than twenty, and they differ from one another in several respects, notably in the position of the names of tribes and their number. Consider Revelation 7 and 14 and the exclusion of the tribe of Dan. Other general issues in Revelation 14 are why only men? (Revelation 14:4) Why virgins? (Revelation 14:4) Explore common interpretations such as the Literalist view and Figurative view. The redeemed virgins are an "anti-image" of the Watchers, who sinned sexually via cohabitation with women in Genesis 6:1-4. They are men because (a) they take the place on earth in war against the Beast of 144K good angels, and (b) they perform priestly roles. They represent the people of God - the opposing "bloodline" of the bloodlines produced by the Watchers. (Levitical "doctrine of substitution"). They are a representation beyond one tribe (Levi); all tribes (except Dan) or the whole people of God.

During this week Pastor Dan looks at how we read the Bible. He examines two extremes in Bible reading: (1) the Materialist or Liberal way, in which the Bible is reduced to a collection of completely explainable phenomena and (2) the Literalist method, which attempts to read the Bible without interpreting it in any way. He presents a third way, in which the Bible is read as a love letter from God to the human race. It is this way that will help us to gain an appreciation of the place we have in God's Creation, and God's relationship to us.
