What do you get when a global rock icon, hailed as a Christian prophet, rewrites the words of Jesus, mocks the need to be born again, and openly celebrates Satanic filmmakers. You get Bono, frontman of U2, whose influence stretches from the Vatican to the world stage, all while distorting the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Text us your questions! This episode was recorded live at Theology Beer Camp 2024. We sat down with Brian McLaren and Tim Whitaker (from The New Evangelicals podcast) to discuss Brian's history in the emerging church movement, the current progressive religious movement (of which we're a part), the Christian nationalist backlash, and our political moment. For those of us who think of ourselves as progressive Christians, it's tempting to feel like we're carving a brand new space out of the ashes of evangelicalism, but of course there's a long history to what's happening now. Brian helps us think about where we've been, where we are now, and what might come next. This conversation was very impromptu, off the cuff, and occasionally raw. There are warnings but also hope and (from Brian at least) wisdom. We hope it's meaningful to you.The books mentioned in this episode are:Prequel by Rachel MaddowA Fever in the Heartland by Timothy EganCheck out the (unedited) video of this conversation here.Content note: This episode contains profanity.=====Want to support us?The best way is to subscribe to our Patreon. 32 of the 33 developed nations in the world have universal healthcare. Why is the United States the only outlier? We spend more on healthcare than any of the other nations, why can't we get the distribution system to be more fair? We also have between five and ten times as many of our citizens in prison, than any of those other developed nations. Why have we not managed to address the roots of poverty (which is what causes most crime) as those other nations have? Obviously, it is some combination of heartlessness and greed of a very short sighted sort. Our country needs to wake up to some very obvious economic and social facts. And while we are at it, let's also consider supporting the news and educational sources that help us to see the world with new eyes. Brian McLaren, a prominent author, theologian, and church leader, has played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of the "emerging church" movement. Renowned for his influential books incl. "A New Kind of Christian" and "A Generous Orthodoxy," McLaren stood at the forefront of a theological paradigm shift within Christianity. The emerging church movement, of which McLaren is a key figure, is often characterized as "post-evangelical" and "post-modern." The movement which rose to popularity about 10 years ago, sought to re-examine scripture without the cultural baggage that it believes Western Christendom has historically imposed. The theology of the emerging church has faced much criticism from figures like James White of Alpha and Omega ministries in Arizona. White perceives this movement as a departure from orthodoxy, viewing it as an attempt to reshape the Gospel and the concept of God to align with modern sensibilities. They discuss post-modernity, Rob Bell's theology, interacting with other faiths, the atonement, sin and the cross. Doug Pagitt talks with Tony Jones and Tripp Fuller about the new podcast they have produced: Emerged - An Oral History Of The Emerging Church. What is, or maybe it needs to be asked, what was, the Emerging Church movement? From the early 1990's through the mid-2000's there was an exciting movement in Christianity that is often called the Emerging Church movement. What was it, where is it now, and how do all this happen are three questions at the center of the the new podcast Emerged. Emerged is a Homebrewed Christianity production.

Apostle Don Beasley - Christian Mytheology Part 2 (Most Christians today want confirmation of their personal views rather than transformation by the Truth in the Word of God and working of the Holy Spirit - The greatest myth is the idea/doctrine of evolution that manifests as humanism - Over 90 percent of todays theology is presented out of 2 1/2 - 5 percent of the pastors of the church - The "Emerging Church" is about interpreting Scripture for themselves instead of Scripture interpreting us - Pre-modern epistemology: from creation to the early 17th century universally held that Truth was revealed to man by a Divine God - Modern epistemology: early 17th century to the early 1970s where increasing numbers of intellectuals rejected authority and revelation as the source of knowledge and called it enlightenment - Modernists reject Truth because God reveals it but believes it comes from the scientific method of criticism, reason and senses - Post-modernism started in the 1970s and claims Truth doesn't exist; and if it does exist you can't know it. they say there is no universal explanation of meaning in the world - Darwin's theory gave the elites something to hang their viewpoints on to exchange God for themselves - Post-modernists have been subtly been redefining things for years and now they are openly forcing their redefinitions against the will of the masses - Race, gender, holiness and morality are all under assault, even changing definitions in dictionaries - Aristotle and hedonism has been enacted to castrate the Truth through the true ambassador of Jesus Christ. They have aborted God. - Apostle Beasley points out that the religious system today is what the apostles were up against in the first century church - We, like the early apostles, must move and walk in the gospel with amazing Power of Holy Spirit to transform lives - The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals declared the U.S. "Pledge of Allegiance" unconstitutional because the words "under God" are contained therein - A godfather of heresy is named; Brian McLaren, whose influence is leading the church astray - T.D. Jakes won't call homosexuality sin, is racist in nature, has evolutionized the gospel into something it's not with his friendship with Oprah Winfrey - Without absolute Truth, there is no absolute morality - The Greek philosopher Pythagoras didn't believe you could know there was a God and his agnosticism taught that man was the measure of rightness and wrongness in everything - Athenians saw the bankruptcy of Pythagoras and threw him out of the city and destroyed his writings - Pythagorism still exists today as a doctrine of demons that has been handed down through time - Don relates that in the church, only one out of three adults believe in absolute morality and among youth it's one out of ten - Dan Kimball, pastor of an "Emergent Church" in Santa Cruz, CA, wishes homosexuality was not a sin issue. He wants to dilute God and His Word - Brian McLaren is questioning God's Word and position on homosexuality) (Turning Point Citi Church, Dixon, IL) 2022-08-09 (Radio Air Date) World Ministries International Dr. Jonathan Hansen - Founder & President Rev. What does worship look like in an Emerging Church? What is a big box church? Are the newest solutions always the best ones? What is it like for a church to create its on traditions, as opposed to using the ones that are passed down from several generations? Is the emerging church the only relevant place of worship for Millennials and Gen-zers? Josh and Tyler, the Director of Worship Tech with Spotswood Creative, discuss the good, bad, and ugly of the emerging church.

He is also a faculty member at Western Seminary and leads the ReGeneration Project, which exists to equip and encourage new generations to think theologically and participate in the mission of the church. He has a master's degree from Western Seminary and a doctorate degree from George Fox University. The missionary journey of Paul and Barnabas is a testament to the quality of life that the Lord will make us live in the representation of His Divine intention, even as the Church of the 21st century. It is important that we continually examine the values and principles established in the Book of Acts of the Apostles as a pattern for us in the ecclesia of this last day. The Church of the 21st century must be a church that fully reflects and embodies the spiritual values of a true kingdom-centered missionary agent, designed to carry the life and light of God into a world influenced by evil systems, ignorance and darkness of the mind, and various kinds of self-destructive tendencies. We must be awakened to the knowledge that in this season of the end, we will meet the same trial, challenges, and resistance that Paul and Barnabas have met on their missionary journeys. Still, the word of God continues to prosper through their hands, as miracles, signs and wonders accompanied their missionary assignment. In the missionary journey we have been looking into, according to Act chapter 13 and 14, and we have been following some powerful kingdom principles that are required in the successful establishment of heaven's prophetic intention for our day. These spiritual keys are there to motivate, encourage, and build our competence in the work of apostolic initiatives. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/isaiah-phillips-akintola/message

Talking about Jude and the emerging church movement 20210926 by Mattias Almlöf
Eric English sits down and talks with Doug Pagitt on the UNenlightenment podcast about the Emerging Church, his most recent project, and we have a Q & A session.
The evangelical church is coming out of Worship War I and is entering Worship War II. Consumerism and Comparison is taking hold of our churches, and it is directly affecting our worship practices. Find out how Josh and Bailey think we should battle Worship War II: Established Church Worship vs. Emerging Church Worship.
The Emerging Church. This is the announcing of a church that trumps our current church system. This is a church that is coming with the full manifestation of the power of the Holy Spirit. It is a Church that carries the Life of God to its full potentials. Until we all come to the end of ourselves and let the Spirit of God guide us into all truth, we are not ready to crush bad traditions that do not build us up in Christ. Christ is looking for a Church that is totally dependant on him as its sources. We are done putting useless or strange fire before the altar of God. Leviticus 10:1-3. The result of such fire always incurs the wrath of God. This church will unseat the present evil of our time and enthrone Jesus Christ as Lord and King.

Kaitlyn talks about a movement that means a lot to her - the emerging/emergent church (she explains the difference, don't worry). It leads to a lot of conversation about what the modern church should be trying to do, and why we battle internally over smaller issues. thesourcehouston.org

In this episode we get hip with the emerging church. We're talking Rob Bell, Doug Pagitt, Rachel Held-Evans, Brian McLaren, Nadia Bolz-Webber, and Tony Jones. We talk about their beliefs, their practices, and some accusations of abuse. It gets deep and it gets tense. Are you concerned about a watered down message of Jesus entering your church? Have you heard of the Emerging Church, have you wondered what it is and means? Have you known of a church that split due to differences in worship styles? You have to listen to Stephanie's personal story and research. Stephanie Griffin joins us this week to give us some insight into her book "Silence No More" and where the journey has taken her into researching what the movement is really about. She was recruited under seemingly innocent and genuine help with her prayer life by someone she trusted in a Godly position. It wasn't until after God revealed to her that these theologies were in direct contradiction to His Word and lies about His Character that she began to uncover the system that she was unknowingly involved with for nine years. This movement is sneaking into the back door of our own churches, courting our youth with an allurement of feel good experience, cutting pieces of Jesus and His Word from the message as not important. To be on guard of the wolf in sheep's clothing we need to be armed with awareness so we aren't easily deceived. To Find out more about Stephanie and her book - Go to her website: Silence No More
Discussion of some of the self-refuting claims of the emergent, post-modern movement and why they must be rejected.
Happy 10th anniversary to the Young Restless & Reformed! To those unfamiliar with YRR, we aren't marking the anniversary of a soap opera, (though, it's had its fair share of drama!). The YRR, or New Calvinism, is a movement that gained momentum in the late 90's when many grew restless within the Emerging Church. They wanted something more solid on which to stand: doctrine! And so they turned to the theological treasure trove of the olden days. For some it's a revolutionary resurgence of discovery and Biblical understanding, while to others, it's simply review. However good this movement from Emergent to Edwards is, it comes with its criticisms and concerns. Ten years strong and the verdict's still out: Have the Young Restless & Reformed strengthened the Church?
Last year in Baltimore the Open and Relational Theologies session took a look at the Emerging Church. This session involves three conversations, with three participants in each. These conversations pertain to papers written by participants, but there will be no formal reading of the papers. The conversations explore issues in the emergent church as they relate to open and relational theologies. Nathan Gilmour talks with Michial Farmer and Danny Anderson about authenticity. A term with etymological roots in reflexive pronouns and historical roots in art criticism, authenticity has taken on philosophical, cultural-critical and pop-cultural meanings that deserve some exploration. Among the texts, trends, and other realities explored are Heidegger's Being and Time, Lionel Trilling's Sincerity and Authenticity, youth ministry, Emerging Church, and faculty workshop speakers.
