On this week's episode of Grease the Wheels, Uncle Jimmy unveils the K-Plan. This is a system that shops and dealerships can use to basically build a farm system for their new technicians while rewarding the technicians that train them to a level of autonomous productivity. It benchmarks what people know against what the new people have to learn, providing clear expectations for knowledge and how a shop wants things done. We also get into the Master-Apprentice relationship and what that needs to be like for long term success. We have been working on it for a while, and that is why the episodes have been bi-weekly! We finally needed it so bad, that we ended up building it! Also Uncle Jimmy calls his shot and does an impression of the outgoing president.

In the pilot episode of "The Acolyte," written and directed by Leslye Headland, the series kicks off with a tantalizing mystery hinted at by the ominous line from the trailer, “Someone is killing Jedi.” However, it quickly becomes apparent that this isn't a traditional whodunit. Instead, the central enigma revolves around the identity and motives of a Sith assassin. The episode sets a dark tone with its opening scene on the planet Ueda, featuring a dramatic bar fight where the Jedi Master Indara (played by Carrie-Anne Moss) is unexpectedly and swiftly killed by an assassin, raising questions about the killer's identity and motives. We are introduced to the main character, Osha Aniseya (Amandla Stenberg), a former Jedi turned mechanic. Osha's life is abruptly upended when she is accused of Master Indara's murder by her old friend, Jedi Knight Yord (Charlie Barnett), and his Padawan. Despite a witness identifying her as the murderer, Osha's involvement remains dubious.During a transport back to face justice, convicts on the ship stage an escape, leaving Osha stranded as the ship crash-lands on the planet Carlacc. Here, Osha experiences a dream in which her presumed dead twin sister, Mae, confesses to the murder. This revelation propels the narrative forward, suggesting that Mae is alive and entangled in a deeper conspiracy. The plot thickens as we meet new characters such as Master Sol (Lee Jung-Jae), Osha's former mentor, and Jecki (Dafne Keen), a Padawan. Sol and Yord eventually find Osha on Carlacc, but a climactic chase leads her to a precarious position reminiscent of "The Fugitive."Mae emerges as a central figure, seemingly allied with a con-artist named Qimir (Manny Jacinto). She seeks a weapon to carry out her mission to eliminate four Jedi, a plan that includes infiltrating a local Jedi Temple on the planet Olega twice. Her interactions with Master Torbin lead to his cryptic last words and subsequent suicide by poison. The narrative is interspersed with nods to classic "Star Wars" lines and themes, notably the iconic “I have a bad feeling about this.” As the Jedi devise a plan to trap Mae, the writing wavers with some inconsistencies and clichéd lines.Mae's mission remains shrouded in mystery, particularly her motivations and the significance of an event called Brendok from sixteen years ago. Despite believing her sister dead, Osha seems to have an uncanny insight into Mae's intentions, raising suspicions about their possible collusion. The episode concludes with Osha allowing Mae to escape during a confrontation, suggesting a complex relationship between the sisters. The next episode teases further intrigue as the story moves to the forest retreat of Kelnacca, a Wookiee Jedi and Mae's next target. The narrative leaves viewers questioning alliances and the true nature of the characters' intentions.

Travis, who was recently honoured for his article “Powerful Dynamics: Exploring the Evolution of the Master-Apprentice Tradition,” has been recognized with an honorable mention in the 2023 Richard Sjoerdsma Award for Excellence in Writing.Travis holds advanced degrees from the University of Southern California and just recently was tenured and promoted to Associate Professor of Voice at San Diego State University's School of Music and Dance. His active performance career includes recent engagements with the Amarillo Opera, Opera a la Carte, La Jolla Symphony, and various international festivals. In addition to his performance career, Travis frequently leads masterclasses and lectures on artistic literacy, student-centered pedagogy, voice pedagogy, and vocal literature. He recently presented “A Compassionate Shift to a More Student-Centered Pedagogy” at the Cal-Western NATS Conference. In this episode, Travis delves into his research on the master-apprentice model's traditions and limitations. He explains how this model enforces a hierarchy in the teacher-student relationship, often leading students to prioritize their teacher's insights over their own, hindering their expressive and autonomous voice exploration. Travis advocates for evolving teaching practices to create safer, more supportive learning environments.Join Dr. Travis Sherwood and I for a thought-provoking discussion that challenges traditional teaching methods and encourages reflection on fostering creativity and independence in voice education. This episode is proudly sponsored by The LoVetri Institute for Somatic Voicework™ . Today's podcast is on an invaluable insight from Master & Apprentice, a novel by Claudia Gray about Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Before we met them in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, these two Jedi did not always get along. Qui-Gon even wanted to dump Kenobi as his Padawan learner during this time. They were oil and water. Why was Obi-Wan so reactive to Qui-Gon Jinn's loose nature as a teacher? Young people are contrarian by nature of their age. Here's what Qui-Gon had to learn….“What your Padawan is doing is totally normal. Adolescents go one of two ways. They're either rebels to the core, or even stricter than their elders. So Obi-Wan's the latter. He'll relax after a while. Know what? If his new Master is stricter than you, I bet he'll loosen up immediately, just to be contrary.” This is what Rael Averross says to Qui-Gon Jinn, who is distraught about his messy relationship with Obi-Wan Kenobi. Jinn is a rule breaker and Obi-Wan is a rather puritanical Jedi. But part of what Learners do is they see both your best and your worst. They borrow from what they like, and dispense with what they don't. It's natural. Don't be offended when YOUR Padawan does the same. They are growing. Testing boundaries and their own convictions. Let them. Keep watch, but let them feel out their own values. It's not all about you. This is the way. In case you missed the latest from This Is The Way, we have a new short article about making the most of adventures, those you planned and those you never saw coming. To go along with this piece, we have an interview on YouTube with author James Pethokoukis. #91. The Master-Apprentice Model: A Powerful Hierarchy with Travis Sherwood

This week on a Voice and Beyond, we welcome, Travis Sherwood, who holds a Doctor of Musical Arts and a Master of Music degree from the University of Southern California. Travis currently serves as Assistant Professor of Voice and Vocal Area Coordinator on the faculty of San Diego State University, School of Music and Dance. Travis frequently lectures and presents on the subjects of artistic literacy, student-centred pedagogy, voice pedagogy, and vocal literature. In this episode, Travis discusses his research into the traditions, evolution and limitations of the master-apprentice Model. Travis tells us that this learning environment establishes a clear hierarchy of power in the teacher-student relationship. He explains that the master-apprentice tradition is rooted in the experiences of the master, requiring students to value the teacher's observations of their voice over their own. From an inferior position, students become dependent on their teachers, often ignoring their bodies in pursuit of the “correct” way to sing. Additionally, in this teacher-centred pedagogy, students frequently silence their artistic and technical instincts. Travis warns us that by perpetuating this tradition, we are not creating safe spaces where students can be expressive, artistic and explore their voices autonomously. He states that there are still certain elements of this tradition permeating in our profession and as voice teachers we must check in on ourselves to ensure we are not perpetuating this teaching model. He suggests we can begin by questioning whether out teaching is grounded in a student-centred philosophy and that our teaching values and builds off the knowledge and experiences of our students. As a mentor and co-learner, we must listen to students with an empathetic ear, responding to their needs and encouraging their sense of individual agency. Travis believes that as we move into the future, the master-apprentice model can limit the possibility of evolution in the voice teaching field. This is a most fascinating and informative interview with Travis Sherwood and one that will inspire many to reflect on their teaching practices.https://travissherwoodbaritone.com/In this episode:06:11 — The Background of a Master07:43 — Experience From a Student-Centered Teacher11:08 — Master-Apprentice: The Status Quo20:08 — The Effects of the Traditional Model21:19 — Breaking Free From Dependency23:33 — The Limited Perspective of the Overseer29:22 — Teachers Being Life-Long Students32:11 — Reverberating the Student's Language35:36 — The Things That Permeated From the Histories37:54 — The Evolution of Teaching the Voice40:38 — Balancing Act of Voice Science44:17 — Harms of High Art and Lower Art Mentality50:42 — Is It an Open or a Closed Repertoire?01:01:05 — Be Student-Centered: Grounding the Pedagogy01:03:54 — Travis' Best Advice For more go to https://drmarisaleenaismith.com/91Like this episode? There are few businesses or buildings more inextricably linked to Claremont than Sherwood Florist, the modest stone oasis of floral beauty located at Indian Hill and Foothill Blvds.  A Claremont icon for over thirty years, Sherwood Florist was founded by Juan De Lira and through his artistry, originality and passion for delivering "amazing" every day, Sherwood Florist has been been supplying the village with fresh, signature top quality flower arrangements ever since.Juan took a few moments recently to reflect on his path from college to becoming the "go-to" florist in Claremont.  He describes how in his early years he discovered that the floral arts were his true calling, some of the key the challenges and work involved along the way, as well as a few of his truly satisfying triumphs and successes. He and his master apprentice/designer, Phoebe Carcamo, then provide an in-depth comparison of the real costs, risks and value received when buying flowers from one of the on-line "floral brokers" vs. the superior, face-to-face, satisfaction-guaranteed experience of ordering directly from dedicated "people pleasers" such as Juan and his staff strive to be on every transaction, beyond simply being able to see the true size and quality of the arrangement and enjoy first-hand all the subtle fragrances it has to offer.Juan includes some endearing anecdotes about the business aspects required to start and grow such a business while keeping the customer's satisfaction as the paramount objective.  They both touch on the undeniable benefits of their central location, having one's business in Claremont and extoll the kindness and quality of the customers and community he has had the pleasure to serve for three decades. This is a "must-listen" episode for anyone who is considering purchasing flowers for Valentine's Day, or any time thereafter.  Juan and Phoebe's wisdom and passion for their product and customers and their recounting and comparison of their on-line experience will surely persuade one to take the small, but significant step to purchase locally while ensuring the satisfaction of the extra-fortunate recipient. This week we conclude our series on Qui-Gon Jinn and Prophecy in Claudia Gray's Master & Apprentice by examining his turn to a more literal interpretation of prophecy. I look at it from an in-universe perspective and discuss the Scriptural and Theological basis for this turn in Christian tradition. It gets at the origins of this podcast: a Virgin-born Promised One who restores the Cosmic Order by coming back from the pit of death. The pull list highlights a pair of SW-connected indie comics, Charles Soule's and Scott Snyder's Undiscovered Country and George Mann's Engineward. I also give my fresh-out-of-the-oven thoughts on the High Republic panel from NYCC Metaverse that aired earlier today. As promised, we've come to the Halin Azucca episode! And again, let's all agree: she's the real prophet here. And her witness is a timely reminder in light of the competing narratives around protest that have erupted in the last year. Like Azucca and her performance art protest group, 93% of these protests have been peaceful. This despite the fact that 100% of actions they're protesting have been violent instances of police brutality, institutional discrimination, verbal slurs and other examples of ingrained racism. Or in Azucca's case, the despicable slavery and stranglehold that the Czerka Corporation has on the Pijal system, including Azucca's beloved but disenfranchised moon. Just this week, the latest real-world example came to the fore when the murderers of Breonna Taylor got off scot-free. This is one of those episodes where I "go for it" politically, while also exploring why some folks don't see protest in the same prophetic light, but instead fear its capacity for destabilization. Either way, I aim to end on a hopeful note as I tee up next week's conclusion to this commentary series. Picking up from last week's episode, this week we look at ways in which Qui-Gon is able to show calm, deft restraint in his prophetic role: his humble self-awareness regarding Obi-wan's development. and his ability to play the political game as a tool in his prophetic toolkit. I also introduce a new segment, the Pull List, during which I'll discuss something from the past week's comic book releases. This week I talk about Marvel's Empyre crossover event, which could have been so much more than it was. All told, a fun way to prepare for January's High Republic takeover of FCSA! This week we continue our look at the themes of prophecy in Claudia Gray's Master & Apprentice, centring on the character of Qui-Gon Jinn. Master Qui-Gon believed that faith in the Force and the mission of the Jedi had to be grounded in a grasp of the real world: how people really live, what they care about, how they struggle. He longed for the Jedi, and for individual Jedi, to be more realistic about the galaxy they lived in and their own limits. Only then could they embody a contemplative presence that would enable them to truly guard peace and justice in the galaxy. I look at some ways that Qui-Gon pursued this in his own life, and ways that the Church is called to pursue this in our world today. I also give some shoutouts to ForceFest--where I encountered Podcast of the Whills and the Faithful Fangirl Podcast, as well as the amazing wildness that was DragonCon goes Virtual. I give a tribute to Chadwick Bozeman and his own prophetic film before going into my main topic. I hope you're inspired to be a contemplative presence in your community as well. Today we are going to talk about 4 paths to start your career. The fourth path is the most common so we will spend less time on that one. I'll try to give some action items for each path. Paths Path of the Pupil. This one is the one we are taught most. It's the formal education model. Here the idea is you take and pass a test and receive a certification.  Many professional careers have to have a certification, for example, doctors, nurses, architects, lawyers and so forth. Some careers can use certifications but don't necessarily need them. We are blessed to live in this day and age because there are many certifications offered online for free. If you find yourself wanting a career that needs some certifications, write down which ones you need or would look good to have. Figure out what you need to do to get them. Path of the Apprentice If you are a Star Wars fan, think of the Jedi order. They function with the Master-Apprentice model.  The basic idea here is to find a master of An art, craft, or industry, and pair up with them. They'll teach you how to become a master. Most often, you'll end up doing some work for them in return. You can find this in the trades, or even as a realtor or financial advisor. If you Find yourself in this camp, write down a few names of possible mentors you could reach out to and find a way to start that relationship. Remember, it doesn't have to be as close as the Master-Apprentice relationship in Star Wars. Accept what comes to you and move forward. Path of the Pioneer This is the most common path for entrepreneurs. Here you assemble what info you can from others who have done something similar, making a sort of map, but then you embark into the wild unknown on your own. You set your own course, find your own landmarks and overcome your own obstacles. That doesn't mean you don't rely on other experts. You just can't follow someone else's path because no one has done exactly what you want to do. You have a trailblazer. Poly Path Here's the fun secret. These aren't really paths at all. They are phases. Each of us go through each of these at one point or another. So in essence we are all poly paths. We all require mentors to guide us through the journey. We all require some tests and certifications that we know our stuff. We all need to set out on our own. So with that knowledge, here are some action items: Find a Guide. Find someone who has done what you want to do and learn from them. Identify Landmarks. Identify what success means and what experiences lead to success Identify what certifications can help you get there. Start moving your feet. Make it happen. Did you like today's episode?
