I, Stewart Alsop, am thrilled to welcome Leon Coe back to the Crazy Wisdom Podcast for a second deep dive. This time, we journeyed from the Renaissance and McLuhan's media theories straight into the heart of theology, church history, and the very essence of faith, exploring how ancient wisdom and modern challenges intertwine. It was a fascinating exploration, touching on everything from apostolic succession to the nature of sin and the search for meaning in a secular age.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversationTimestamps00:43 I kick things off by asking Leon about the Renaissance, Martin Luther, and the profound impact of the printing press on religion.01:02 Leon Coe illuminates Marshall McLuhan's insights on how technologies, like print, shape our consciousness and societal structures.03:25 Leon takes us back to early Church history, discussing the Church's life and sacraments, including the Didache, well before the Bible's formal canonization.06:00 Leon explains the scriptural basis for Peter as the "rock" of the Church, the foundation for the office of the papacy.07:06 We delve into the concept of apostolic succession, where Leon describes the unbroken line of ordination from the apostles.11:57 Leon clarifies Jesus's relationship to the Law, referencing Matthew 5:17 where Jesus states he came to fulfill, not abolish, the Law.12:20 I reflect on the intricate dance of religion, culture, and technology, and the sometimes bewildering, "cosmic joke" nature of our current reality.16:46 I share my thoughts on secularism potentially acting as a new, unacknowledged religion, and how it often leaves a void in our search for purpose.19:28 Leon introduces what he calls the "most terrifying verse in the Bible," Matthew 7:21, emphasizing the importance of doing the Father's will.24:21 Leon discusses the Eucharist as the new Passover, drawing connections to Jewish tradition and Jesus's institution of this central sacrament.Key InsightsTechnology's Shaping Power: McLuhan's Enduring Relevance. Leon highlighted how Marshall McLuhan's theories are crucial for understanding history. The shift from an oral, communal society to an individualistic one via the printing press, for instance, directly fueled the Protestant Reformation by enabling personal interpretation of scripture, moving away from a unified Church authority. The Early Church's Foundation: Life Before the Canon. Leon emphasized that for roughly 300 years before the Bible was officially canonized, the Church was actively functioning. It had established practices, sacraments (like baptism and the Eucharist), and teachings, as evidenced by texts like the Didache, demonstrating a lived faith independent of a finalized scriptural canon.Peter and Apostolic Succession: The Unbroken Chain. A core point from Leon was Jesus designating Peter as the "rock" upon which He would build His Church. This, combined with the principle of apostolic succession—the laying on of hands in an unbroken line from the apostles—forms the Catholic and Orthodox claim to authoritative teaching and sacramental ministry.Fulfillment, Not Abolition: Jesus and the Law. Leon clarified that Jesus, as stated in Matthew 5:17, came not to abolish the Old Testament Law but to fulfill it. This means the Mosaic Law finds its ultimate meaning and completion in Christ, who institutes a New Covenant.Secularism's Spiritual Vacuum: A Modern Religion? I, Stewart, posited that modern secularism, while valuing empiricism, often acts like a new religion that explicitly rejects the spiritual and miraculous. Leon agreed this can lead to a sense of emptiness, as humans inherently long for purpose and connection to a creator, a void secularism struggles to fill. The Criticality of God's Will: Beyond Lip Service. Leon pointed to Matthew 7:21 ("Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven...") as a stark reminder. True faith requires more than verbal profession; it demands actively doing the will of the Father, implying that actions and heartfelt commitment are essential for salvation. The Eucharist as Central: The New Passover and Real Presence. Leon passionately explained the Eucharist as the new Passover, instituted by Christ. Referencing John 6, he stressed the Catholic belief in the Real Presence—that the bread and wine become the literal body and blood of Christ—which is essential for spiritual life and communion with God.Reconciliation and Purity: Restoring Communion. Leon explained the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) as a vital means, given through the Church's apostolic ministry, to restore communion with God after sin. He also touched upon Purgatory as a state of purification for overcoming attachments to sin, ensuring one is perfectly ordered to God before entering Heaven.Contact Information* Leon Coe: @LeonJCoe on Twitter (X)

Questions? Comments? Text Us!In this heartfelt episode of What's On Your Mind, Jerry L. Martin and Scott Langdon explore a deeply personal spiritual journey shared through three emails from a listener named Roxana. Spanning over a year and a half, Roxana's correspondence reveals an inspiring evolution from doubt and disconnection to curiosity, courage, and a desire for oneness with the Divine.Through Roxana's words, listeners will resonate with the emotional honesty of someone searching for truth in the wake of personal suffering, disillusionment with religion, and the isolating static of anxiety. Her initial doubts and questions, sparked by pain, secular influences, and spiritual exhaustion, give way to hopeful inquiry, theological exploration, and a longing to reconnect with God.Jerry and Scott reflect on Roxana's unfolding story with compassion and philosophical insight, discussing themes like panentheism, the nature of divine communication, the role of suffering in spiritual growth, and the difference between religious doctrine and lived spiritual experience. They unpack how spiritual progress often begins not in certainty, but in openness- the kind that Roxana beautifully models through her vulnerability and persistence. This episode offers encouragement to those feeling spiritually adrift, reminding us that we may already be home, we just need to remember. Whether you're religious, spiritual but not religious (SBNR), or spiritually curious, Roxana's journey invites us all to look inward and listen deeply.
We are using cartography to view the Christian landscape via a map. The map helps define the great diversity of churches and denominations. Our series explains why the result of 2,000 years of evolution led to such division. In this episode we use Spiral Dynamics to trace the history of the situation. The state of Christianity and the church must be understood from the beginning or Genesis of the God Identity story. So I show how everything preceding Jesus and the apostolic writers set the stage for an interpretation of Christology that led to a world religion. From here we will propose a new future for Christology, one that results in world-centric unity.
The concept I'll be using relating to map making is cartography. The audience for this series is any and everyone interested in having a global conversation for a new earth. All are welcome regardless of denominational affiliation or non-affiliation, Catholic or Protestant and those who are now post Christian or Trans-religious. The series will address the map as it evolved from the past, meaning how the map took shape in the first few centuries and then expanded into a world religion of thousands of denominations and factions. We will then address the map as to how it looks today. And I'll ask each of you to identify your place on today's map.
We all have people in our lives who claim to be "spiritual but not religious". Listen in as Pastor Josh pulls directly from scripture to lay out a framework for how we, as Christians, can and should show up for our friends who may believe in God, but want nothing to do with the church.

As a matter of fact, a growing number of people who identify as “spiritual but not religious” have no desire for such a relationship... at least not as it is currently understood by most “churchy” people. Listen in to this Extra Shot episode as Karin Peter talks about the people and things with which this group does connect. Find out where their interests lie, and why the church may be missing the mark. Don't worry, Karin will offer some suggestions to get us on track with this very justice-minded community. The West is rapidly losing its religion, but strangely, that does not mean it is losing its belief in the supernatural. In fact, such beliefs are as common as ever. The "Spiritual but not Religious" subgroup has quickly become one of the biggest and fastest-growing groups in the US and other Western nations. But who are they? What do they believe? And where did this trend come from? In this episode, we discuss (in obsessive detail) the origins and common threads surrounding the Spiritual but not Religious.

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life.” (Henry David Thoreau, Walden)In 1845, when he was 27 years old, Henry David Thoreau walked a ways from his home in Concord, MA and built a small house on a small lake—Walden Pond. He lived there for two years, two months, and two days, and he wrote about it. Walden has since become a classic. A treasure to naturalists and philosophers, historians and hipsters, conservationists and non-violent resistors. Something about abstaining from society and its affordances, reconnecting with the land, searching for something beyond the ordinary, living independently, self-reliantly, intentionally, deliberately.Since then, Thoreau has risen to a kind of secular sainthood. Perhaps the first of now many spiritual but not religious, how should we understand Thoreau's thought, writing, actions, and way of life?In this episode, Evan Rosa welcomes Lawrence Buell (Powell M. Cabot Professor of American Literature Emeritus, Harvard University) for a conversation about how to read Thoreau. He is the author of many books on transcendentalism, ecology, and American literature. And his latest book is Henry David Thoreau: Thinking Disobediently, a brief philosophical biography and introduction to the thought of Thoreau through his two most classic works: “Walden” and “Civil Disobedience.”In today's episode Larry Buell and I discuss Thoreau's geographical, historical, social, and intellectual contexts; his friendship with Ralph Waldo Emerson; why he went out to live on a pond for 2 years, 2 months, and 2 days and how it changed him; the difference between wildness and wilderness; why we're drawn to the simplicity of wild natural landscapes and the ideals of moral perfection; the body, the senses, attunement and attention; the connection between solitude and contemplation; the importance of individual moral conscience and the concept of civil disobedience; Thoreau's one night in jail and the legacy of his political witness; and ultimately, what it means to think disobediently.About Lawrence BuellLawrence Buell is Powell M. He and Moore discuss Horton's new book, Shaman and Sage: The Roots of “Spiritual but Not Religious” in Antiquity. Their conversation explores the growing cultural attraction to Wicca, why people long for a connection to the mystical, and the goodness of our created flesh. Caleb Wait, Sola Media's Director of Content, interviews Michael Horton on his new book, “Shaman and Sage: The Roots of “Spiritual but Not Religious” in Antiquity. Many preachers today appeal to headlines that announce a surge in spirituality as if this news offers the church encouragement. We tend to think of modern secular culture as hostile to spirituality—an atheistic world of soulless materialism. So if modern people now want spirituality, Christians often think, that must mean people will find their way toward Christianity. This thesis, among many others, is challenged by Horton in the first volume of his new series on the Divine-Self. Listen in as Horton shares how this new intellectual history of “spiritual but not religious” as a phenomenon in Western culture is the biggest project he's ever undertaken. Horton shows how ancient shamanist practices and philosophies appear in Plato, schools in Alexandria, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and more, revealing to us that modern practices and beliefs are far more ancient than we think.
