Why do we have countries? Why do we mark this land and these people as distinct from that land and those people? What are countries for? Yii-Jan Lin (Associate Professor of New Testament, Yale Divinity School) joins Matt Croasmun to discuss her new book, Immigration and Apocalypse, which traces the development of distinctly American ideas about the meaning of a country, its borders, and crossing those borders through immigration—exploring how the biblical book of Revelation has influenced our modern geopolitical map.Together they discuss the eschatological vision of Christopher Columbus; the Puritanical founding of New Haven, Connecticut to be the New Jerusalem; Ronald Reagan's America as “City on a Hill”; the politics of COVID; the experience of Asian American immigrants in the 19th century; and how scripture shapes the American imagination in surprising and sometimes troubling ways.About Yii-Jan LinYii-Jan Lin is Associate Professor of New Testament at Yale Divinity School. She specializes in immigration, textual criticism, the Revelation of John, critical race theory, and gender and sexuality. Her book *Immigration and Apocalypse: How the Book of Revelation Shaped American Immigration* (Yale University Press 2024), focuses on the use of Revelation in political discourse surrounding American immigration—in conceptions of America as the New Jerusalem and of unwanted immigrants as the filthy, idolatrous horde outside the city walls. Her book The Erotic Life of Manuscripts (Oxford 2016), examines how metaphors of race, family, evolution, and genetic inheritance have shaped the goals and assumptions of New Testament textual criticism from the eighteenth century to the present.Professor Lin has been published in journals such as the Journal of Biblical Literature, Early Christianity, and TC: A Journal of Biblical Textual Criticism. She is co-chair of the Minoritized Criticism and Biblical Interpretation section of the Society of Biblical Literature, on the steering committee for the Ethnic Chinese Biblical Colloquium, and on the steering committees for the New Testament Textual Criticism and the Bible in America sections of SBL. She also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Biblical Literature. Professor Lin is a member of the Society of Asian Biblical Studies, the European Association of Biblical Studies, and an elected member of Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas.Show NotesGet your copy of *Immigration and Apocalypse: How the Book of Revelation Shaped American Immigration, by* Yii-Jan LinIllustration: “John of Patmos watches the descent of New Jerusalem from God in a 14th-century tapestry”—modified and collaged by Evan RosaChristopher Columbus's eschatological visionThe Book of Revelation and the heavenly cityThe meaning of “apocalypse”New Haven as New JerusalemJohn Davenport (April 9, 1597 – May 30, 1670) was an English Puritan clergyman and co-founder of the American colony of New Haven.Ronald Reagan and America as a “shining city on a hill”America as God's cityRevelation 21, The New Jerusalem“A door that's always open”1983 as the “Year of the Bible”Exclusion, open gates, and America's immigration policyHospitalityOutside the gates“For some reason, the seer doesn't see just an open landscape. Nothing says 'Thanksgiving' like ill-prepared colonists, Puritanical mania, and an old fashioned massacre! First, Emily tells the disastrous story of Jonestown through the eyes of one unfortunate settler. Then, Kelley tells the story of Anne Hutchinson, a woman living in the Massachusetts (bless you) colony and dared to question one man's understanding of the unknowable and omnipotent being called God. More than 30 million people can trace their ancestry to the 102 passengers and 30 crew aboard the Mayflower when it landed in Plymouth Bay, Massachusetts in the harsh winter of 1620. On board were men, women and children from different walks of life across England and the city of Leiden in Holland. But why did the Pilgrims leave their old lives behind in the first place, chancing it all to cross the treacherous Atlantic and settle a strange alien land?In today's episode Don is joined by Dr Anna Scott, heritage consultant and public historian at the University of Lincoln in the UK, to learn more about this 400-year-old tale of religious persecution, financial opportunity and a Puritanical fight for freedom that helped sow the seeds of a fledgling nation.Produced by Sophie Gee. Join Bob Johnston and his wife Lynn on Catholic Spirit Radio's "Being Catholic" as they dive into the intriguing parallels between historical Puritanism and today's woke culture. Broadcasting across Central and Northern Illinois, Bob and Lynn explore how modern-day "wokeism" mirrors the old Puritanical principles, with its rigid moral dichotomies and societal pressures. The episode kicks off with Lynn reflecting on the recent natural disasters affecting the southeastern United States, reminding us of the fragility of life and the importance of community support. The conversation then shifts to the relaxing joys of birdwatching, a pastime that offers a peaceful escape from the stresses of everyday life. Bob delves into a thought-provoking discussion on the cyclical nature of religious revivals in America, drawing insights from an article by Alex Pennelly. He examines how the fervor of the Great Awakening has transformed into today's cultural battles, where the new Puritans seek to reshape society according to their standards of virtue and morality. Listeners are encouraged to reflect on the enduring themes of human nature and the quest for moral perfection, as Bob and Lynn highlight the Catholic perspective on finding balance, joy, and sanity in a complex world. Tune in for an engaging exploration of history, culture, and faith on "Being Catholic" with Bob Johnston.
Thoughts on the episode? Let us know.Let's get started because we don't have a lot of time.At least that's the perspective of today's guest, Jodi Wellman. Jodi is an executive coach and speaker, and the author of You Only Die Once. And she's a big fan of Memento mori, Latin for "remember that you will die."Acknowledging the scarcity of our time, she insists, can help us make the most of the time that we have. And it doesn't have to be morbid. It can be fun. Jodi keeps skulls as decorations, and they're surprisingly cheerful-lookingRemembering that we don't have infinite time and infinite opportunities can provide a much needed push when we're stuck. So we can live the life we want, rather than waiting and rationalizing and looking back with regret at the end.In our conversation, I get free coaching on making some bold moves in my life.We talk about my fear of "indulging," even a little — that it will turn into a one-way highway to depravity — and how I might explore some balance between self-indulgence and Puritanical austerity. In summation: "Life is short. We gotta get on with this shit."Click to subscribe to the Mindset Mastery Memo.Support the show

In this episode of The Skeptical Shaman podcast, host Rachel White (of TOTEM Readings) chats with Voodoo practitioner, author and business owner Sallie Ann Glassman all about the realm of spirits, otherwise known in Voodoo as "loa".Sallie has been practicing Vodoo in New Orleans since 1976 and is the owner of the Island of Salvation Botanica, a store and gallery specializing in Vodoun religious supplies, medicinal and magical herbs, and Haitian and local artworks. She received her spiritual training in Haiti in November, and is ordained as a Manbo Asogwe, or Priestess of Vodou-- and is one of the few white Americans to have been ordained via a traditional Haitian initiation. Sallie is also the creator of one of Rachel's favorite all-time tarot decks: The Voodoo Tarot of New Orleans, which features the various Voodoo loa, their invocations, and their special gifts and blessings for human practitioners. In this episode, Sallie and Rachel discuss just how powerful working with the world of spirit can be-- including Sallie's experience using ceremonial magic to quite literally stop crime in her New Orleans neighborhood! In fact, the crime-busting ceremony was so effective (resulting in arrests, etc.) that the New York Times and Smithsonian Magazine (among others) featured the story in their publications!Sallie and Rachel also address the ontological fallacy of "toxic positivity" within the World of Woo, urging the spiritually homeless to keep an open mind and abandon their limiting, Puritanical beliefs to receive profound-- and tangible-- insights. Voodoo and the city of New Orleans serve as powerful reminders of the need to be rooted in the material world, integrating our spiritual gifts into the here and now for the benefit of all!Links:The TOTEM Tarot Deck: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0578980126?ref=myi_title_dpTOTEM Flower Essence Deck: https://a.co/d/dikcLjiTOTEM Flower Essences on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/TotemReadingsATXTOTEM Readings Website: https://www.totemreadings.comTOTEM Readings Substack: https://totemrach.substack.comRachel's Other Links: https://linktr.ee/totemrachSallie's Website: https://www.islandofsalvationbotanica.comSallie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sallieann61/?hl=enPlease note: The views and opinions expressed on The Skeptical Shaman do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Noah Rothman is an author and conservative thinker who is a Senior Writer for National Review, and whose recent bestseller, “The Rise of the New Puritans: Fighting Back Against Progressives' War on Fun,” is the chief subject of the second episode of our new series Dirty Moderate After Dark.Adam and Noah do a deep dive into the origins of Puritan thought, and they detail the odd, and very uniquely American way in which Puritanical thinking is embedded into our cultural and political tapestry. What's more, Noah explains how his book examines the deeply religious and dogmatic English Puritans who settled on the Eastern Seaboard in the 17th century and how their spiritual, if not religious, successors have found a cozy home within the extreme wing of today's woke left.Adam and Noah also discuss the collapse of the Republican Party into an incoherent, ideologically barren cult of personality party led by Trump, and they lament the abandonment of the robust internationalism which the Reagan era GOP once typified and the dangers of today's MAGA GOP and the shortsighted, isolationist thinking that they promulgate.Though neither of them were boozed, Adam and Noah waxed eloquently After Dark about all things philosophical and political, and their conversation was nevertheless wide-ranging, absorbing, and unlike today's Puritans, fun.Find Noah's amazing book hereRead Noah at National ReviewNoah on X @NoahCRothmanThanks for helping us save democracy one episode at a time! Modern day wizard and genuine delight of a human Devin Person (host of This Podcast is a Ritual) joins Lorrae to explore the everyday magic of creating more pleasure in our lives – from using ritual, intention, and sex magic to create a slightly better reality, to embracing that magic isn't a shortcut to getting what we want - it's the scenic route to healing. Devin and Lorrae take a deep dive into the magic inside us all, recognizing our own patterns, limitations, and the roles we play in life, love, and relationships. We explore how to identifying the facets of ourselves that we love AND those that no longer serve us (like the Manic Pixie Dreamgirl role Lorrae shares she's emulated for so long!O), so we can release them and transform into something even more magical than we already are. This insightful conversation challenges us to let go of fear-based spirituality and the Puritanical aspects of “sacred sexuality” and “energetic entanglement”, and instead use our own experience of sexuality to understand ourselves and each other on a deeper level.___Get my favorite vibrator, the Magic Wand Rechargeable and the Magic Wand Mini! Two friends and academics recap classic literature and take it off its pedestal. Two friends and academics recap classic literature and take it off its pedestal. In our fiftieth episode and (anti-)Christmas special, we go into John Milton's Puritanical vision of the Fall of Man, Paradise Lost (1667) ... where Milton may just be of Satan's party. It's a world where God is both a mall security guard and the leader of a sex cult, and neither role explains his mysterious ways. Daniel discovers the word, 'Ayyyoooo!', Abby reminisces about '90s pop culture, and both of them hate Milton's Alt Jesus.Cover art © Catherine Wu.Episode Theme: Purcell, 'March' in Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary (1695). He is mostly interested in understanding how human social behavior and cultural traditions are shaped by evolved cognitive mechanisms and cultural evolutionary processes –– with a particular focus on moral intuitions, supernatural beliefs, and social norms and institutions. In this episode, we talk about the evolution of human moral cognition and moral emotions. We start by discussing the role of emotions in moral cognition, and the distinction between social and moral emotions. We go through examples of moral emotions like indignation, guilt, shame, disgust, and empathy. We talk about the social role of institutionalized punishment, the rise of moralizing religions, and the functions of beliefs in supernatural punishment. We discuss the evolution of puritanical morality, and why people moralize harmless body pleasures. Bubble, bubble, toil and lots of trouble. The Puritanical witch hunt of Salem, Massachusetts took the lives of 19 innocent people as one of the most dramatic instances of scapegoating in American history. Was there something in the rye? Evil in the water? Sexism in the air? Well, that goes without saying. This Week's Sponsors: Ritual- Ritual is offering my listeners 30% off during your first month. Mark Twain famously said: "History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme." The purple haired, nose-ringed, tatted social justice warriors of today seem nothing like our top-hatted, petticoated, Puritan forebears--- but ala Mark Twain, they bear an eerie resemblance. What actually leads to enduring success is repetition for a very long time. There's not really a single thing, but it is very much living a Puritanical life for as long as you possibly can. The more about you do “the right thing” for a longer period of time the more likely that you're actually going to experience this success in your life, The hard part is, is that “doing the right thing” is often very difficult to do for an extended period of time.
Henrietta Maria of France was the highly controversial queen of Charles I. An avowed Catholic in an increasingly Puritanical country, her efforts to promote her religion were one of the factors that led to the Civil War. A forceful character, Henrietta played her part in the war (despite being a target for Parliamentarians), but would she be able to survive? And can such an unpopular queen be in the running for the Rex Factor? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

We are exploring artistic events happening in our region and now we'll learn about the Voice Theatre's production of Tennessee Williams' “Summer and Smoke,” running through July 30 at Bethany Hall Theatre at Old Dutch in Kingston.Alma, a high-minded young woman, trapped by her father and mentally challenged, comical mother questions her family's Puritanical values. The return of a childhood friend, now a talented doctor, offers Alma a glimpse into a world of sensual love—but his reckless womanizing threatens them both. We are joined by Artistic Director of Voice Theatre and Director of “Summer and Smoke,” Shauna Kanter; and actors Tara Nicole Murphy and JJ Wilks.
The structure of this sermon is particularly interesting, being slightly more developed than Spurgeon's norm. He begins by unpacking the detail of his text, then focuses on the matter of sanctification, which he then teases out under three headings: the order of a holy life, the rule of that order, and the great Director of that order. There is something typically Puritanical in the identification of the doctrine and then its development and application. That impression is only heightened in the opening point, where Spurgeon really digs down into what elements of order there are in a holy life. He almost exhausts his time, and certainly skews his structure, by spending so much time here, but does then press home the Scriptures as the rule of such a life, emphasising the way in which the Word of God is obeyed with constant reference to God himself (you can almost read the headings in his notes as he rattles through the material!), before some final conclusions and applications. It reminds us that Spurgeon is alive as he preaches, and that the sermon itself is a bridled stallion which sometimes runs away with the best of preachers; nevertheless, there is no waste here, for the preacher responds to the liveliness of his steed, and still manages to finish his course, setting before us particularly something of the beauty of a life of godliness. Welcome back to ParaPower Mapping and the fifth installment of "The Secret History of MasSUSchusetts". It's a surprise double header! This was initially going to be one episode, but I got so obsessed w/ mapping William Pynchon's fur-trading monopoly and decoding the Rosicrucian wordplay in Thomas Pynchon's short story "Under the Rose" that I had to split it into 2. This episode covers: our cont'd serialization of Winthrop the Younger's alchemical Rosicrucian plantation; the enabling of his settlement of the Pequot lands of Nameaug/ New London by his daddy's war against the Pequot; the complex territorial power dynamics b/w Winthrop Jr., the Mohegan chief Uncas, the Pequot Robin Cassacinamon, & the Connecticut & Massachusetts colonies; Winthrop's attempt to use his alchemedicine practice to consolidate power & respect among Pequot by posing as a "powwaw" (medicine doctor); Uncas's strategic wifing up & the rad counter-revolutionary moment when Robin helped a Pequot woman escape from her enslavement in Winthrop Sr.'s compound in Boston; Uncas & his war band's raid on New London—attempt to assert his power over Pequot villagers & make his tributaries return to his camp; the rare instance where the colonial authorities sided w/ Uncas (an indigenous sachem) instead of English grievances; Winthrop's enslavement of Robin; Uncas's obstruction of Winthrop the Younger's shipments of ore from his Tantiusque mine site... ...a brief Puritanical backlash against alchemy in the 1640s, & Winthrop Jr.'s ally Robert Child's house arrest; Child's dissident faction, which petitioned the colonies to change their enfranchisement laws & push MA + CT to become more religiously tolerant... ...William Pynchon's defense of Robert Child's crew; his "heretical" text The Meritorious Price of Our Redemption; William Pynchon family's gentry status & property-holdings in Chelmsford; his status as churchwarden & "Matthew Yglesias-like hall monitoring" of his fellow villagers (basically he was a pain in everyone's ass); Pynchon fam's decision to join the Puritan emigres to NE for economic reasons; his founding of Roxbury & Springfield; preexisting relationship w/ the Winthrop's; the tragic smallpox epidemic that killed 12,000 indigenous in the Connecticut River Valley in 1633, "clearing the way" for Pynchon's Springfield; Pynchon's land & fur speculation; his role as colonial treasurer; the Springfielders' belief that Connecticut indigenous cursed their settlement by invoking Hobbamock; Pynchon as magistrate & overlord of his village; his prosecution of Hugh & Mary Parsons for witchcraft, which may have acted as a convenient distraction from his heresy case; Pynchon's proto-capitalist system of keeping villagers indebted to him indefinitely so he could work them to death, particularly Hugh Parsons; witch's teats, purple milk, a calf w/ 3 heads, witch-y night terrors, UAP lights over Boston, bloody rain, & other "Memorable Providences"; Mary Parson's shock confession of witchcraft & death in prison; Pynchon's Biblical exegesis of the Atonement; & his return to Old England... ...a mapping of W. Pynchon's powerful descendants; Hawthorne's The House of the Seven Gables & the Pynchon fam's piss-iness that he "slandered" them; a glossing of Thomas Pynchon's early life, matriculation at Cornell, Navy deployment, Greenwich Village connections, & early writing career; a semi-close-reading (possibly schizo) of one of Pynchon's earliest stories, the spy-caper "Under the Rose" (which was repurposed in V. & Slow Learner), especially the rampant Rosicrucian symbolism & wordplay; his use of his colonial heritage; & other speculations... Songs: | Maas — “San Narciso” | | The Insect Trust — “The Eyes of a New York Woman” | | 15 seconds of... Dropkick Murphys — “Shipping Up to Boston” ...for comedic effect | | Sheb Wooley — “The Purple People Eater” | | Radiohead — “We Drink Young Blood” | | Greenfield Leisure — “Too Fat to Frug” |

The sermons Spurgeon preached carry us very high and very low, matching some of the heights and depths of his own experience. Here he is encouraging us with the joy of true religion, and the spirit of the service we render to our Lord and Saviour. In somewhat Puritanical structure, Spurgeon first teases out the primary elements of his text: we serve; we serve the Lord; we serve the Lord with gladness. He then zeroes in on this key idea, and more or less interrogates the notion. Where does this joy come from? Where does it show itself? What makes it so difficult? And, why is it so excellent? Here he is able to bring the truth to bear for instruction and exhortation, for encouragement and challenge. His delight in God and his salvation bleeds out especially under the first main heading, although he is attempting a pastoral balance, recognising the challenges we face and trying to provide sweet spiritual motives for the labour we undertake for our God and Saviour, Jesus Christ. This sermon teaches us to trace the streams of joy back to the fountain of God's saving love, and there to have our hearts lifted heavenward, and our hands strengthened on earth. Judgmental. Wound too tight. Frowny. That's a quick sketch of a person trying to be justified by the Law. It's true: The caricature of the sour Puritanical soul who never has any fun does apply to some who name the name of Christ. But isn't it possible that these poor folks have fallen into the same trap as the Pharisee - the snare of pride? Jim will give us a black-and-white list today of what the Law looks like, versus Grace, in someone's life. Welcome to October 27, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate breaking an unlucky streak and a beverage that is best served cold. It appears that the myth surrounding black cats as bad luck is relatively new. This bad wrap is associated with the Puritanical view of witches and their supernatural pets. Starting in the 12th century, folks believed that a witch could transform into a black cat nine times. This is probably where their reputation for having multiple lives began too. But well before that, the ebony coated feline was a sign of good luck. From Ancient Egypt to Old England, Scotland and Japan, black cats were thought of as a symbol of good fortune. They were even given as a wedding present for hundreds of years. On National Black Cat Day, break with superstition and find yourself some good feline fortune. America's love affair with beer started even before the United States was a country. In 1612, Dutch traders Adrian Block and Hans Christiansen established a brewery on what would become Manhattan Island. At the time, the area was called New Amsterdam and was a fur trading outpost. The winter that year was especially cold and icy, which made the workers very grumpy. To boost morale amongst their men, Block and his partner started brewing beer, which worked like a charm. While beer is consumed all over the world, here in the States we love it served icy cold. On National American Beer Day celebrate the season of chill by cracking open a cold one. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Episode 4, Young Goodman Brown, comes to us from 1835 and continues our trek backwards in time to find some of the earliest forms of short story horror in the modern age. Nathaniel Hawthorn weaves a tale rich in religious imagery, doublethink, and madness set within the time of the Witch Trials in Salem, Massachusetts. It is a fantastic example of the Puritanical mindset and how even amongst likeminded folk they were often riled in philosophical struggles against good and evil. Hawthorne hypothesizes - based on his own personal guilt that his father was a judge during the Witch Trials - that evil is inherent in all people and that the truly pious are those few and far between with the courage to stand against their community and hold firm to their beliefs. And with the Young Goodman Brown, the Devil is everywhere and is much more familiar than you or I give him credit for.
"China is a strange, backwards nation ruled by tyrants," said the nation founded by Puritans who used to execute women for witchcraft and just killed reproductive rights protections because they think Jesus told them to. The world is dominated culturally, economically and militarily by a regime that just killed women's reproductive rights because they make Jesus mad. Reading by Tim Foley.

Synopsis In 1970, British composer Peter Maxwell Davies moved to the remote and rugged Orkney Islands off the northern coast of Scotland. At first, he said, the natives thought he was just some weirdo from the south, and the more Puritanical islanders would pray the might find a more respectable means of earning a living than writing music. But over time Davies and the islanders got used to each other. The composer found inspiration in the landscape and legends of the area, while the community warmed to the fact that the newcomer found them so fascinating. In 1978, Davies attended a neighbor's wedding, which inspired a musical work he called “An Orkney Wedding with Sunrise.” “It is a picture postcard,” said Davies, “We hear the guests arriving, out of extremely bad weather. This is followed by a processional and first glass of whiskey. The band tunes up and we get on with the dancing, which becomes ever wilder, until the lead fiddle can hardly hold the band together. We leave the hall into the cold night. As we walk home across the island, the sun rises to a glorious dawn.” “The sun,” Maxwell Davies concluded, “is represented by the highland bagpipes, in full traditional splendor.” Despite its local color, “An Orkney Wedding with Sunrise” was actually an AMERICAN commission from the Boston Pops, who gave its premiere on today's date in 1985, with John Williams conducting. Erica Smith, sex educator of 20 years, speaker, writer, consultant (including online one-on-one's) and creator of Purity Culture Drop Out comes on to talk all things sex, some advice and insight for all. This episode covers a variety of topics surrounding human sexuality, including the benefits of regular masturbation for men and women; and the conundrum between valuing feminine freedom and power, while hating their objectification. Is it a bummer to be asexual? Would it be helpful for people to expand the definition of what sex is? Are some people wired incompatible with monogamy? Erica points to the Puritanical values that have been baked into the very sexual fabric of America, impacting those in and well outside of church/religious culture? At top of episode, Robbie Maddison, Hayne Griffith and Joey Svendsen talk vaccines as Joey shares the very close call his mother had a few weeks ago with that there COVID-19.
