Remember when they were coming to take your gas stove away? Every so often a study about the effects of air pollution on health goes viral, and we're reminded again that seemingly innocuous objects—like your kitchen cooker—could be bad for us in unexpected ways. How bad is air pollution? And is it getting any better? In this episode of The Studies Show, Tom and Stuart look into the science of air pollution, trying to separate correlation from causality, and working out what scientists mean when they say that deaths are “attributable” to something (it's more complicated than you think!).The Studies Show is brought to you by Works in Progress magazine. We usually mention their long-form pieces at worksinprogress.co, but they also have a Substack newsletter at worksinprogress.news with shorter articles on the same topics. We commend it to you, and thank Works in Progress for sponsoring the podcast.Show notes* Recent news about “Ella's Law” in the UK* Tom's 2019 Unherd article on air pollution* “Death risk from London's toxic air sees ‘utterly horrifying' rise for second year running”* The Our World In Data “Deaths by Risk Factor” graph* 2024 BMJ Open article about the health risks of coal power stations* Dynomight's long article on air quality* The 1952 “Great Smog of London”* More useful Our World In Data articles:* An explainer on “attributable fractions” and summing up multiple risk factors* On indoor air pollution* Deaths from outdoor pollution* Death rate from outdoor pollution* Deaths from outdoor pollution vs. GDP per capita* The WHO calls indoor air pollution “the world's single largest environmental health risk”* More on attributable fractions, with some examples* Example of an experimental study on the effects of air pollution* The article that sparked the Great Cooker Controversy of 2023* Example of the media coverage at the time* Biden forced to rule out a ban on gas cookers* Recent story on how there's “no safe level” of PM2.5* Based on this 2024 paper in the BMJ* How policy interventions can reduce (and have reduced) air pollution* London report on the effect of ULEZCreditsThe Studies Show is produced by Julian Mayers at Yada Yada Productions. Impact Leaders - Impact Investment and Performance with Purpose

Ben Yeoh is the Senior Portfolio Manager, Co-manager of Global Equities, a specialist in Healthcare and ESG Champion at Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) Global Asset Management (GAM UK). Ben is also a member of the Investor Advisory Group at the Financial Reporting Council (FRC). He chairs the Responsible Investment Advisory Committee at Royal London Asset Management. He is also the co-author of New Text Book on ESG Investing by the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute (CFA UK) Highlights: Looking beyond the causal drivers into more active stewardship and long term sustainability There is a spectrum of capital and the markets will decide on how to react to corporates without sustainability strategy or if they decide not to price in carbon A lot of companies are over-borrowing from human capital, environmental and natural capital or cutting R&D ‘We want to avoid companies creating contingent liabilities or liabilities you don’t see on the balance sheet, which are typically extra financial, call them ESG.’ We will need abatement in hard to abate sectors like cement, fertilizers, flying, steel making, aluminum, plastics, or all that. Integrated vs exclusionary ESG vs positive impact Degrowth movement vs growth and decoupled growth ‘You need systems thinking in combination with personal agency’ ‘Stewardship Code 2020 is going to be a really important piece ... because it's putting the onus on a lot of people in the investment chain to report in a much more transparent way. I'm hopeful that is going to raise the bar in terms of what we're looking for on a systems level.’ Time Stamp: [03:38] What is sustainable and impact investing? In this podcast episode, I talk about the key ingredients that could change everything for you when you attend a training.  A lot of people tell me that they don’t really like role plays. It puts them off. I get that. Your learning style influences you more than what you think. it changes how you internally represent experiences, how you recall information and what words you choose. Studies at the Surrey Baby Lab at the University of Surrey have investigated colour perception and cognition across development. Did you know that brown and grey are the least attractive colours? Did you know that research shows that learning appears to be affected adversely by inadequate light, extreme temperatures, and loud noises? When I run my Masterclasses, it’s all about how I can create environments that facilitate collaborative activities. I learnt a great deal from being of a team who design a new school in Sheffield and from Cisco and so this is why I carefully select the venue for each of my Masterclasses. Oh I forgot to ask...Are you coming to my next Masterclass on 2nd October in London? More on Nadine Powrie, Executive and Leadership Coach www.nadinepowrie.com   My next Masterclass on 'Coaching for Managing Difficult Conversations' is on 2nd October in London. Your investment is £599 +VAT. Book online https://www.nadinepowrie.com/masterclasses/ or alternatively I can send you an invoice if you prefer.

LONDON—More than seventy years after he began work in public health, and just a few months short of his 100th birthday, Professor Jerry Morris—one of the 1930s pioneers of the British National Health Service—is hard at work in the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine investigating factors which keep ordinary people in the community alive longer. His research team has already established that a threshold of income is needed for a minimum standard of health. In discussions with Peter Goodwin he urged the need for acceptance of minimum wages around the world on the basis of the health criteria which he and his co-workers have defined.
