Guest Bio Marcelo Rojas Decut is the Co-Founder & CEO of eCLUB a modern bank for the unbanked in Latin America. Marcelo has a professional career with over 18 years of senior experience in the financial sector - in retail and corporate banking - as a board member and commercial director in large global banks such as BBVA and Citi Bank focusing on LatAm, particularly Argentina, Paraguay & Uruguay. He is also an entrepreneur at heart and 10 years ago ventured into new areas including Agro business and the use of innovative technologies to improve the yield and performance of its investments. Since 2017 he is a member of the executive board of CREA - the regional Consortium of Agricultural Innovation. Marcelo is a chartered accountant, with an Executive Post-graduate from the University of Navarra (IESE), a post-graduate degree in Applied Business Management at the California State University, as well as a Masters in Strategic Management from the Universidad de Misiones (UNAM) eCLUB eCLUB is a FinTech company focused on democratizing impact by providing access to financial services in Latin America. eCLUB's mission is to solve the financial inclusion problem in Latin America. The social mission is to empower the 270 million unbanked people to help unlock Latin America ́s growth potential by giving them access to financial services for the first time. The vision is to become the regional leader. The first target country is Paraguay, given the current opportunities and partnerships available for the faster and more successful delivery of the initial growth plans and impact. Summary How do you help people improve their lives? Research shows that Impact Economics is key, which is driven by financial inclusion and empowerment, since the opportunities for people increase exponentially as their income and financial situation improves. But for this, people first need to be able to access what only a small percentage of the population can - equality so people have the same available to them, but this begins with access. During this insightful conversation you will have a window open for you … to show you the current situation in Latin America, what needs to be done, what can be done, and who is doing it, and the immense opportunity for Impact Investing. Key Points In the US almost 60% of transactions are done digitally, in Latin America almost 75% of transactions are done in cash. The unbanked are living in an unequal society where people who have the least access to cash have to pay a higher price for financial services. We can help to close the huge gap between those who have access to financial services and those who haven't. eCLUB's mission is to solve the financial inclusion problem in Latin America. The main focus is to help people have a better life. That is the end goal. Consumers have very few alternatives, most of the banking sector is concentrated in very few banks. And you can see the same story in every country. The sector is dominated by 5 or 6 banks that concentrate 80% of deposits and 80% of the loans. Due to the lack of competition in the sector, the people have to pay some of the highest interest rates in the world, and some of the highest fees in the world. Yes, because they have no alternative. The worst is that this way of doing banking has created a big problem, where almost 50% of the middle class and lower-middle-class people don't have access to an account, over 70% of the people don't have access to credit. Banking the unbanked means that simplicity is key in the user experience. “We are not just providing financial services, we are also giving the unbanked tools to improve their financial knowledge to re functionalities that allow people to track their expenses, knowing what they are spending the money.” In Latin America, there is a high level of entrepreneurship. For small businesses the main barrier to growth is a lack of access to finance and credit. This sector creates 70% of employment in the whole of Latin America. eCLUB's first market is Paraguay and to reach 1 million people in the next 4 years. They aim to launch in Brazil next! Guest Bio - David O'Leary David is a wealth management expert, impact investment professional, public speaker, and writer. David spends his time as Founder & Principal of Kind Wealth, a holistic wealth management practice helping early to mid-career Canadians manage their money in a way that matches their values. (See full BIO at the end of the notes) Summary This is yet another fascinating episode that covers so many questions: What is the role of a wealth manager? Or an Investment Manager? Or a Financial Planner? What is the fiduciary duty? And what is the duty of the pension funds and other institutions that are the largest investors in the world? And from a personal perspective, what are some of the best things the “average” person can do to “vote with their dollar”? Do you have to be a high-stakes, risk-taking investor to make a difference? Or can you be involved from early career stages to shape the future world into a sustainable landscape and impact wealth reality? What is the best intersectionality between advisors and clients? How do we measure impact, the access and the inclusion to products, services and the effect they are having on people, the environment and the returns? These and so many more topics are covered during this in-depth episode. Enjoy! Key points The definition of “impact investment” and the spectrum of capital: where or how you want to participate is your personal choice based on your wealth management goals. Somehow, sustainable investment and profit-generation became mutually exclusive, but it doesn't have to be. The impact of having a theory of change Whatever it's called, when your approach to wealth management includes using finances to better the world, your investments will be healthier than if you were only trying to get more money with little regard to how profits are generated. David also produces and hosts The Impact Investing Podcast and is a frequent speaker at conferences and in the media (The Globe & Mail, The Toronto Star, BNN Bloomberg, CNBC Africa, etc.). Previously, David was Managing Director of Origin Capital, the impact investing division of World Vision Canada. Prior to that he co-founded Eden Valley Partners, an advisory practice managing discretionary portfolios and providing financial planning to high net worth Canadians. David spent the first 13 years of his career with Morningstar in both Canada and South Africa in a variety of Director level roles where he specialized in Investment Manager Research. David holds a BA in English Literature from the University of Toronto, an MBA from the Rotman School of Business, the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, and the Qualified Associate Financial Planner® (QAFP) designation. He is also working toward the Certified Professional Impact Analyst (CPIA) designation at Queens University. ------- David's short life story In clichéd fashion, my life was transformed when I met a girl. I know, boy meets girl, how original! But her influence led me to take a six-week sabbatical from my job on Bay Street to spend that time volunteering in Sierra Leone with one of the world's largest humanitarian organizations. My goal was to learn about how they were using microfinance to help end poverty. The trip was an emotional roller coaster that left me, at once, angry, sad, inspired, and motivated to do something about the appalling inequality I had witnessed. I didn't realize it then, but two years later I would move to South Africa. Four years after that, I would quit my job in the institutional investment world and move home to pursue work that I felt could make a bigger social impact. This work included co-founding a traditional financial advisory practice that integrated philanthropy with financial planning for retirement-age Canadians. It also included three years leading the impact investing division of the same INGO I had volunteered with all those years ago in Sierra Leone. During this time, I spent evenings and weekends working to get Kind Wealth off the ground. I'm passionate about Kind Wealth because during my 20 years of working in financial services, I came to see the underbelly of the industry and the many ways in which it took advantage of clients, the very people it claims to serve. I have also built a deep understanding of how people's money choices impact the world around us: whether it be decisions about saving, spending, investing, or donating, it all leaves a footprint, for better or worse. I am excited to be building a wealth management practice that actually lives out its values, treats clients fairly, and helps them reach their financial goals in a way they can feel good about. On a personal note, I am a passionate advocate for equality of all stripes but maintain a particular focus on fighting for gender equality and against wealth inequality. I have a wide set of eclectic and often incongruous interests. In what feels like a lifetime ago, I was a competitive boxer in both Canada and South Africa. As such, I spent a great many hours punching other people in the face. Yet I've spent even more time traveling to developing countries trying to understand the root causes of wealth inequality and how I could help tackle it. In recent years I have been on a quest to simplify my life, be content with less, and stay mindful of the impact my life choices have on the world around us. I am currently working on eating less meat and reducing my family's consumption by purchasing or bartering for second-hand goods. Oh, and in case you're wondering, that girl I mentioned at the top of my bio, the one who changed my life, I ended up marrying her and having two strong-willed, socially conscious girls together. ------- Important: The content shared on this podcast does not constitute a request, offer, recommendation or solicitation of any kind to buy, subscribe, sell or redeem any investment instruments or to perform other such transactions of any kind.

About this episode What do you do when your desire to change the world seems at odds with capitalism? Sir Tim Smit pulls back the curtains on the perception of a contradictory world that is actually not so contradictory at all. He shares the lessons and mistakes that can transform an organization from ordinary to extraordinary, and it all has to do with mutually beneficial partnerships. “If you can't do the whole job, you could end up doing a lot of damage.” So how do you make sure you can do the whole job? About Sir Tim Smit Sir Timothy Bartel Smit KBE is a Dutch-born British businessman is best known for his achievements in Cornwall and for writing the book The Lost Gardens of Heligan, winner of the 1997 Book of the Year. He and John Nelson restored the gardens, which are now one of the UK's best loved gardens and named “Garden of the Year” by BBC Countryfile Awards (Mar 2018). Tim started work as an archaeologist before taking an unexpected leap into the music business, working as both a songwriter and producer receiving seven platinum and gold discs. Tim is currently the Executive Vice-Chair and Co-founder of the multi award-winning Eden Project in Cornwall. Since its opening in 2001, over 22 million people have come to see a once-sterile pit turned into a cradle of life containing world-class horticulture and startling architecture, symbolic of human endeavour. He dreamt up and created the Eden Project, near St Austell, an £80 million initiative to build two transparent biomes in an old china clay pit near the village of Bodelva, which is said to have contributed over £1 billion into the Cornish economy. Tim is also Executive Co-Chair for Eden Project International, which aims to have an Eden Project on every habited continent by 2025. Key points The pandemic has exacerbated but also highlighted and accelerated necessary changes in how we interact with our environment. Long-term partnerships - that are mutually beneficial - are the key to sustained growth and opportunities that can truly make a difference. The Eden Project is more than just building pretty gardens, there are deep, social and philosophical, reasons for why it has been developing scientifically the way it has. The key to upending the status quo when it comes to clean air and water for all is having difficult conversations that really examine why capitalism and moral bankruptcy are falsely equated. Some of the difficult conversations are unintentional consequences of oversimplifying complex issues as “good” or “bad” Sir Tim Smit lists his favourite people and books that discuss intelligent approaches to understanding how the world should work, and how it was working before intervention that was backed by greed and self-interest. Tim joined Hermes Investment Management in 2009 as a research analyst for the European Equities team and became lead portfolio manager of the ESG-integrated Hermes Europe ex-UK Equity Fund in 2015, which he also managed until he left Hermes.About RegnanRegnan is a responsible investment leader with a long and proud heritage providing advice and insights on important environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. Regnan was established in 1996 to investigate and address ESG-related related sources of risk and value for long-term shareholders in Australian companies. Building on that expertise, in 2020 Regnan expanded its capabilities into responsible investment funds management, backed by the considerable resources of Pendal Group (ASX:PDL), the Australian investment manager and owner of J O Hambro Capital Management. They have offices in Sydney, Melbourne and London.Key Points: Engagement and stewardship is a hugely important part of impact investing. “It’s all part of the same strategy to really try and democratise it as an investment category, to broaden access to impact investing.” “I think one of the cultures within the investment team is this concept of constant improvement, so the strategy, the process, the philosophy is identical to the one that we founded back in 2012, we started building in 2016, and launched in 2017.” On systems change - Our SDG taxonomy is the centerpiece. The taxonomy is basically what helps us identify what systems we’re going to be moving towards. It is a process and a list of economic activity in product and services that are being produced by companies that help achieve specific SDG targets. “I hope to see that all Article 9 business takes much more nuanced and thoughtful approach to classifying which companies they will ultimately invest and allocate their capital towards, and which they aren't ... ... I think ultimately, businesses change and businesses can reinvent themselves, which is something that that needs to be reminded. We have some great examples in our portfolio of companies that have transitioned from perhaps in the industries that have been extractive industries and negative industries in the past towards, you know, positive areas like renewables in renewable energies, but ultimately, it's much more complicated and much more qualitative than a simple scoring system can ever help you achieve.” Education is key. Being able to help investors that are new to sustainable impact investing to understand and decipher this alphabet soup of terminology is key, because it allows them to quickly or more quickly align, their own objectives with the products that are available to them on the market. Further education and refinement of the terminology is key. Fund managers that are perhaps newer to the game, should try and be vigilant and careful with how they label their products, not just from a regulatory point of view, but also from a naming convention point of view. Because it makes a big difference in helping the broader understanding of people who are just learning about this space as we speak. The future belongs to everyone Good businesses exist to solve problems. Look beyond the marketing material and imaging to really challenge the investors to tell you what they want to achieve and tell you how they want to achieve it. Leaders are innovative and sometimes have to rewrite the rules. Time Stamp:[0:00:50] Intro[0:02:30] What is sustainable and impact investing?[0:06:44] It takes time. She holds a MBA from Harvard Business School and a BSc in Economics from Unicamp. About Snowball IMSnowball Impact Management is a diversified, multi-asset investment vehicle that aims to create positive outcomes for people and planet whilst generating sound financial returns. Snowball invests in a range of public and private funds that support a variety of social and environmental outcomes across the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. They are currently have deployed our funds invested in public and private market investments and we target a risk-adjusted annual return of 5-6% above inflation, net of all fees, over the long term. They have a four year track record investing with this strategy. Highlights: “We still look and act as if people and nature are inputs into the financial process and inputs for financial gains instead of thinking financial markets are tools to support people and planet.” Impact investing: is intentional, additional and measurable and incorporates risk based approach of ESG and takes it one step further. The ABC approach = A: Avoiding harm + B: Benefiting stakeholders + C: Contributing to solutions “I do think that especially the larger companies could do faster than what they are doing. And I think, unfortunately, a lot of them will only do it under pressure from investors and from the way that we invest. And that's why it's important, I think, is a very important role of the financial industry to make sure that we also don't get accommodated with the status quo , and start to really put some incentives and pressure for companies to transition faster, especially the ones that have more resources to do so.” Snowball’s investment strategy is to have a diversified portfolio: renewable energy, sustainable forestry, social housing, charity bonds, circular economy, tech for good. They invest in all SDGs - with the final SDG in aquaculture of SDG14 - Life Below Water. First time investors are interested to learn from every asset classes and impact from every SDGs. Core and satellite strategy: What is happening on the ground How fund managers works with investments to improve impact How we work with other fund managers and investors to improve our approach and share leaning Standards and regulations are next steps to scale impact. We need to make it easy for investors to compare and contrast investments and make it harder for impact washing. Pricing of negative externalities is a fundamental step in scaling and mainstreaming impact. Rockefeller Foundation gave a grant so that Snowball can share their experience to the impact community of lessons learned about starting and growing an impact fund - there will be a webinar - Watch this space. Investment examples: Circularity Capital is an investment fund of Snowball, they invest in circular economy businesses. Shark Solutions is an investment of Circular Capital, they recycle and reuse hard to extract PVB from laminated glasses. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Going after your network and asking for advise. New Series Today’s episode of IMPACT LEADERS is part of our new “series” (siris) called: “The Sustainable Investment Dilemma” Looking into how industries can help address the Climate & Social Crisis, in particular the financial industry, taking on the opportunity to address the way it has financed the activities that have taken us to our current situation. I invite you all to visit our sponsor’s website at ILAandPartners.com or the YouTube channel to watch the first video interview on this paramount subject and launch of this series. They are also the co-authors of the newly published book “THE elea WAY: A Learning Journey Toward Sustainable Impact”, which they are presenting and discussing during our conversation. FREE GIVE AWAY Get a digital copy of The elea Way Book - Send us a message via CONTACT US page (https://ilaandpartners.com/contact-us/) with Subject Line: The elea Way . ***Limited copies*** So hurry! Professor Vanina Farber, PhD, is an economist and political scientist with 20 years of teaching, researching, and consultancy experience. She holds the elea Chair for Social Innovation at IMD. Previously, Vanina was Dean of the Graduate School of Business and Associate Professor at Universidad del Pacífico in Peru. Peter Wuffli, PhD, is a senior leader and entrepreneurial philanthropist. He is the Founder and Chairman of elea Foundation for Ethics in Globalization and the Honorary Chairman of IMD. Previously, Peter was a partner at McKinsey & Company, the CEO of UBS Group and the Chairman of Partners Group, respectively IMD. In 2015, he published the book Inclusive Leadership. The elea Way Book - The Learning Journey Toward Sustainable Impact The new book by Vanina Farber and Peter A. Wuffli summarizes insights from elea’s 15-year pioneering journey, from creating an investment organization, choosing purposeful themes, and sourcing opportunities, to partnering with entrepreneurs for impact creation. Elea Foundation Elea was established in 2006 with the purpose of fighting absolute poverty (i.e. less than USD 3 daily income) with entrepreneurial means. Elea is a philanthropic impact investor in the fields of agricultural value chains, informal retail and last mile distribution, employable skill building and digital solutions. Institute for Management Development (IMD) The Institute for Management Development (IMD) is an independent academic institution with Swiss roots and global reach, founded 75 years ago by business leaders for business leaders. Based in Lausanne Switzerland and Singapore, IMD has been ranked in the Top 3 of the annual FT’s Executive Education Global Ranking for the last nine consecutive years and in the top five for 17 consecutive years. Their MBA and EMBA programs have repeatedly been singled out among the best in Europe and the world. The tag line is Challenging what is and inspiring what could be. Highlights: Since the term was coined in 2007, there is now $500 -700 billion committed capital to impact investing. Social entrepreneurs are supported by organisations such as Ashoka, Skoll World Forum, WEF, Leaders of Tomorrow. Social entrepreneurship and impact investing are the two trends coming together bringing inclusive capitalism to solve and innovative solutions. I am a strong believer that capitalism is something great. Capitalism should be the solution and not the problem. But I also say we should make capitalism more inclusive. Talented people today want to work in companies that pursue meaningful purpose. Public expects capitalism to be articulated in a new way. We can do well by doing good. Every wealthy family particularly the younger generation is interested in these topics The elea Center for Social innovation focus on bringing social entrepreneurs with corporates Covid - All 20 active ventures survived. It was a humbling experience working with entrepreneurs through the pandemic. The pandemic gave us much more urgency and momentum. There is bigger recognition that systemic risks that are tail risks with low probability could happen. The idea of the system is much more concrete and the idea of interconnectedness becomes clear. The Elea Way Book allows for self learning, it is a practical and hands on book from a pedagogical perspective. It is the book that brings together social entrepreneurship and impact investing Standing on the shoulders of others - Bill Braden and Andy Kuper Bill Braden - CEO and founder of Ashoka - pioneer of social entrepreneurship Andy Cooper - Leapfrog, the first proof of an investment company that profit and purpose works. Fund managers should take a deeper look at impact. 3 phases of impact investment: $10k - Idea phase, competition $100k - Entrepreneur has to decide to fully commit, friends and family money not suffice. revenue of $0.5-2million - Not just concepts, building teams, working with government, 5-7 years Accion (https://www.accion.org/) harnessing digital technology to create financial inclusion Examples of investments: InkaMoss (http://inkamoss.com/) - helping 6000 farmers, small farm holders in Peru Dharma Life (https://dharmalife.in/) - supporting entrepreneurship in 40,000 villages in India BagoSphere (https://www.bagosphere.com/) - providing digital courses to improve employability skills in The Philippines Encouraged to see that social entrepreneurship, impact entrepreneurship and corporates are coming together. “No hay mal. Que por bien no venga” - There are 100’s of methods but nothing that suited our purpose. The elea Impact Measurement Method was developed for for measuring of impact on absolute poverty specifically for elea. This takes into account - factors and elea impact points/1000 Swiss Franc. Impact points serve 3 purpose: To set goals - how many impact point we want to achieve For comparability between ventures - capital allocation tool To communicate regular performance reporting Investors are not just competing for more impact points but internalising the impact, more than just seeing images. Quantifying impact helps the decision making process and applies theory of change. At some stage, in 5-10 years, impact becomes tradeable. These kinds of currencies become real currency and maybe blockchain will help us here to create markets with impact. When we look at impact it is still traded at a discount. My dream is that one day impact will be traded at a premium not at a discount. They are not called donors, they are called philanthropic investors who give us philanthropic investors. They become by being on the board, helping with strategy and risk management. It’s not about creating bigger institutions and organisations. It’s about how to build partnerships, how to build bridges across sectors. It’s about getting different type of organisations aligned. Collaboration in blended finance needs to be more agile. We are starting to see SDG funds of $500million with blended finance facilities. Keys to leadership is intentional influence. Leadership needs to be ethical, be more horizontal than vertical, and is able to get things done and mobilise people around solving problems. We need to learn and be thorough. We have wasted a lot of money. Entrepreneurship is more critical and scarce now than money for impact investment.” Time Stamp: [0:02:40] Intro to Vanina and Peter [0:05:20] What is impact investing? Highlihgts: Our business focuses on real assets or essential assets, renewable energy, real estate, timber and agriculture. "We are moving the goalposts away from ESG steadily to impact in the future, where it's not only about compliance with environmental aspects, social and governance aspects." "... one of the very few independent investment managers in Germany, and in operation for 20 years, is in my view, a strong indication of the vision that the two founders set out Roman and Dieter." “We want to bring to the table smart capital, as opposed to passive capital that is abundantly existing, but doesn't really get to the point.” There is an interest in investing in Asia. More institutional investors in the region are interested in increasing exposure to renewable energy and sustainable investments. We support by not just creating our own renewable energy offering but by helping create a broader universe of offering for renewable energy that benefits everyone. The renewable energy market is constantly changing you need to stay ahead, stay intellectually curious and have the ambition to analayse the market and create sound investment decisions. Ben plays an active industry role as a member of various sustainable and impact investment initiatives, interacting with companies, policymakers, NGOs and other investors. He is a Trustee at Firefly International youth organisation, which provides educational and mental health support for young people in conflict-affected areas in the Balkans and Middle East. Previous to joining M&G in 2003, Ben spent four years with the Equities team at Invesco Perpetual. He has an honours degree in Classics from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Highlights: “We have a responsibility to integrate ESG across our suite of investments and asset classes” If you think about the the issues that drive performance, the issues that really can cause major blow ups, often they're ESG related. Data breach, oil spills, falling faul to a major diversity and inclusion related scandal are all things that can hit the reputation and bottom line of consumers. We just think you have to take into account all these risk whether ESG funds or not, right across all $350B assets. “We have a suite of ESG funds that covers different asset classes. Over the last 10 years, in particular the past 4-5 years, the ESG integration programs across M&G started in equities and fixed income, but is now broadening out to all asset classes on behalf of clients. All of them now say they embrace and integrate and ESG approach.” We have to and our clients wants specifically designed funds with clearly articulated ESG integration programmes Impact financing fund - Private debt investments in liquid debts investments that have a net positive impact such as social housing, energy efficiency and green buildings, renewable energy infrastructures ESG needs to be managed and communicated just as how the risk function has evolved over the past 10-15 years. There is expectation from clients that ESG is an important part of the process. It’s not just the ESG team, it has to come from the leadership. Companies are not just seeing this as a leadership issue, they are seeing this as a survival issue. Shifting from competitive, moated competitive advantage thinking to a open-minded, supportive, collaborative approach. Mindset shift in healthcare sector with Covid - the role is not just to protect your IP and generate super normal returns but to provide healthcare and save lives. M&G Triple “I” framework: Investment, Intentionality, Impact. Investment: sustainable business models, good company, long-term. Intention comes from purpose, clarity of purpose and authenticity. Examples of KPIs - Millions of tons of greenhouse gas saved, avoidance of virgin material and use of virgin forest. Millions of trees saved, millions of people accessing financial services in underserved communities. Move from a shareholder primacy perspective to a stakeholder responsibility perspective. A company should genuinely be thinking about its responsibilities to all stakeholders and future generations. Impact adjusted accounting approach - we need a new accounting system for the 21st century. Collaboration is at an all time high, to navigate the complexity of changes and behaviours we need. On today’s episode we are doing something different: we are sharing with you a session that I called “The Sustainable Investment Dilemma”, a conversation I hosted as part of The CogXtra weekly event series, covering in this opportunity the subject of “Sustainable Business – How Industry is addressing the Climate Crisis”. In our case, the financial industry. As my co-panellist I brought together two guests: Amy Clarke, who is Co-Founder & Chief Impact Officer of Tribe Impact Capital, and Troy Mortimer, who is Responsible Investment and ESG Advisor at ILA & Partners. If you did not know them already, I highly recommend that you also listen to the individuals episodes we recorded previously. You can also read her Bios at the end of these notes. As part of the event I also shared a short Video introduction to the recently launched film “Our Planet: Too Big To Fail”, which is a 42-minute film that explores the risks of inaction, the impact of investing-as-usual, and the role the finance sector can play powering a sustainable future. I wanted to bring this to your attention to ask you to watch it and share it, so we can all take proactive actions! You can watch the video on ILA & Partners’ website - Media section: http://bit.ly/ILAmediaV I also thought this is relevant to set the tone ahead of our conversation, but most importantly, I wanted to shine the light on one of the best tools we have to create awareness and understand how interconnected the industry is to every part of society and the world at large. Please note that we had a couple of technical challenges that were all resolved during the first few minutes, but I wanted to make sure you had access to this valuable content. Enjoy ! Highlights: “If we can create a much healthier relationship with our wealth, and the purpose of our wealth, then actually we should be able to fix, repair, increase resilience, and ultimately regenerate the relationships with each other and with nature.” Amy Clarke 50th anniversary of Milton Friedman's seminal essay that was penned and then printed in the New York Times Magazine “there is a real sense that the values and belief systems upon which we have built this global finance system aren't right, they're not fit, they're not robust.” There is the rise of the BCorp movement and the use of BLab tools during the lockdown has risen exponentially. “Impact investing is about helping wealth holders reconnect with the purpose of their wealth. The word wealth comes from two old English 13th century old English words, meaning well being, we've lost the well being and wealth along the way. And it's become singularly focused on financial performance.” Amy Clarke “I see this as a behavioral inertia challenge. Financial institutions are comprised of individuals, we need to look at how we incentivise these individuals, how we are rewarding them and how we associate value with their actions.” Troy Mortimer We can transition not all but a lot of companies through to becoming a force for good. “We need a just transition, quickly and effectively where finance, regulation and policy play a role. We need a carrot and a stick.” Troy Mortimer How do we move beyond (Only) preaching to the converted? The later we leave it, the steeper the transition is going to be - Mark Carney The more we pushback regulation deadlines, the more uncertainty it creates. Ultimately, its better to takes the operational learnings in Covid and behaviour change and apply it to compliance and regulation. Bernard Looney, CEO of BP, a different style of leadership. Moving away into a more human style of leadership. We need to use AI to help change behaviours in the right direction. Passive ESG funds should be able to demonstrate intent. Its important to populate the empirical evidence and convince the skeptics of the economic data with the language that they know. “We have outperformed the benchmarks. There is more than enough data to show that these type of investments are resilient on up and down cycles, which is why we are seeing huge flows into ESG.” Amy Clarke “As a bellwether for market sentiment, its phenomenal, because we can now see everybody is looking for safe harbours and safe harbours of businesses with these kind of resilience built in.” “Investors should be thinking - Well, I understand that there is some volatility right now, but in the mean time, I’m investing for something larger. What you wil see is that over the long-term, it starts to come back in financial returns.” Troy Mortimer As Tim Geithner said, at least in relation to the US financial crisis and how they had resources large enough to do anything about that crisis , but I think financial resources will not be enough in relation to the Sustainability challenge we face. And we will not have time to react and fix things. But we must be proactive. Highlights: Being good is good business. Beating benchmarks and creating a pot at the end of a period just heuristics. These are just shorthand. We don't live in an isolated bubble called the financial world. We live in the real world, in real communities with real neighbours in the real space. In reality, we control most of the capital markets in the world, so we have the ability to shape the world in a way that is beneficial to us. The reason you invest is you want to grow the economy that you want to live in. Every investment you make has an impact on your life, not just on your portfolio but on your life. Challenge -> Misunderstanding Adam Smith - the moral philosopher: “happiness, perhaps the preservation of his existence again, all right, his contentment, happiness here means contentment, the preservation of his existence, his very life depends upon what its preservation preserving what the prosperity of society“. COVID has generated the debate. What is it that we as a developed society care about? We should care about the life of all citizens including citizens who are not economically productive - that’s what pensioners are in harsh economic terms. Do we care about citizens’ lives or do we care about pure financial economic growth? We have a shared assumption, the shared assumption that we have is that it's possible in the financial sector to combine being really technically excellent at what you do, while at the same time being truly a decent human being. We call it being nice. We are privileged because of how much we get paid and where we are, therefore we should reach out to help those around us. It’s about how much giving of your time and how much do you empathise. We see ourselves as the pebble that maybe can help start the avalanche that can change the market for better. I think we are part of that movement. The key is to make change for the better. It’s not what we do, its who we are. Who we are then produces what we do. But you start with the human first, not the product. High active share managers, even the ones that are not skilled outperform benchmark and everybody else after fees from that position. People use the word alpha. I don't like the word alpha, its value. We pay half of our bonuses on “being nice”. We invented the idea of engagement. Doing stewardship is a better way of enhancing value over the long-term. I'm absolutely convinced that the trend is that it will become almost impossible for people to invest in index without investing in stewardship. I worry that if ESG becomes a trend, it becomes a label. If it becomes a label, it becomes a tick box exercise. When we talk about ESG factors, however, it seems like the market wants to have a specific box that they want to put everything into it rather than the nuance. It’s the nuances of what sustainability means, what governance means, that adds value in reality. What moves companies is not just financials. There are lots of intangible assets in some of the biggest companies, in brands and reputation. Culture in banks is more important than measuring the financials. On climate change and carbon investments, to solve the problem you need 3 things to happen: Convince the company to close down or change business model Find alternative sources of what the company does Convince consumers to shift consumer behaviour Encourage oil major to shift to cleaner energy Advocate regulators to move to clean EV Change consumer behaviour e.g. move away from fast fashion and meat. Invest in alternative visions and technology. It's not a one-pill solution. You have got to do all these things. We are not interested in virtual signalling. COVID has taught us that extreme events can whack society in major ways. When I judge myself, I genuinely do not think that success is money or position or title. I think success is helping others. We receive what we have in trust from God and we have to pass it on to the next generation Every day “I judge myself”: What have I really done to make an impact? I think success is helping others If I know I’ve not done what I should do. I ask myself, have I done the best I could, in giving something back? Yuni Choi focuses on the investment portfolio of RS Group. She has 14 years of investment experience across public and private equities and in multi-asset portfolio management. Before joining RS Group, Yuni was Vice President at TAU Investment, an impact-driven private equity firm investing in the apparel supply chain. We see a lot of ESG funds, with the bigger asset management firms they have very shiny presentations that are very well organised but in the end what gives us the real insights is talking to the managers and understanding how they implement the ESG framework. The magic is really getting to know them” We believe closely monitoring and engaging managers is also our duty as a responsible investor. “One of the fundamental challenges is that positive and negative externalities are not fully priced in. This means coal miners or harmful oil and gas exploration projects can still access funding at a rate not too different from green projects.” When ecosystem services are properly valued, companies will not be able to justify damaging natural resources to increase their profit, such as producing palm oil from cleared lands or overfishing or use of unsustainable fishing methods. “We sincerely hope that sustainable investing does not remain as one type of investing but becomes the only way of investing.” Many investors still think that moving their capital to ESG ETFs is enough, but in our opinion, while ESG ETFs are better than traditional ETFs, they are not the best solutions. There is no active company engagement, no fundamental ESG research investors who need to understand ESG label itself is not enough. They need to move their capital into strategies that have a really robust ESG integration. We want to see more asset managers, more banks actually investing in the ESG talents in the region. Please listen to the episode to be inspired beyond any boundaries and read the “More about Mark Campanale” section at the end of these notes to learn more about his outstanding career and contribution to the financial markets and our society at large. Highlights: How can we change financial Markets for good? “There is an old saying: How do you change capitalism? You need to take control of the capital.” Mark’s (career) evolution and path to founding Carbon Tracker: Going to The University of York Crossing the Sahara Desert Becoming an analyst assessing projects for Live Aid Working on the first fairtrade coffee in Tanzania in1988 Pioneering green finance alongside Tessa Tennant founder of Merlin Ecology Fund Being one of the first “green analyst” in the City of London Investing in the first renewable energy business Knowing what you don’t like: Stop the city protest Inspiring women leaders in the industry How global warming motivated Mark to find solutions through the world of finance. Xtrata’s IPO and the lack of sustainable impact information on their documentation. The long list of supporters, advocates and funders of this movement “In the same way that Bill McKibben with the divestment movement managed to change everything, Mark Carney carried this message into the world of financial markets regulation has changed everything.” Re-thinking the purpose of finance: The future of the planet, the security of the financial system and pension schemes. Paris Climate agreement: Investors are absolutely aligned with a safe outcome. The analysis of ecological boundaries and its financial impact “Four or five hedge funds are now shorting the fossil fuel industry and going long on the clean economy. I think we are going to see a lot more of that in the future.” “Everyone that has sold out of the fossil fuels sector or shorted it in from 10 years ago has done extremely well, both on a relative and absolute basis … but we need a forceful intervention”. Using Satellites and AI to help cut carbon emissions: Transparency is a crucial element of accountability. Jason Mitchell is Co-Head of Responsible Investment for Man Group plc. He is responsible for directing the development of impact, thematic and norms-based investment strategies as well as the broader integration of ESG criteria across asset classes and multi-asset solutions. Jason also acts as advisor on funds where ESG, impact investing, engagement and norms-based screening represent a principal feature of the strategy. He co-chairs Man Group’s Stewardship & Active Ownership Committee. He speaks and writes widely on social and environmental issues, most recently in the FT and London Review of Books. He also hosts ‘A Sustainable Future’, an award-winning podcast about what we’re doing today to build a more sustainable world tomorrow. The podcast profiles organizations, leaders and academics who are examining all facets of sustainability, from climate change and migration to governance and global norms. The podcast provides an open, educational resource to anyone interested in exploring approaches to sustainable, responsible investing. Highlights: Jason works on better management of ESG at a portfolio level. What happens to ESG when elevating from a typical single issuer or single security measures to portfolio allocation of capital. “We actually think that cultivating different types of approaches is actually a huge positive for us because when you think about all these businesses ... as individuals streets or lanes all meeting at one intersection that ... kind of feels like Piccadilly square, it's just noisy loud. And at that intersection when it comes to this space you find differing, sometimes conflicting expectations, approaches and implementations of, let's say ESG. My point is that the intersection is an incredibly powerful way to understand what we want to build.” What are we solving for? What is the end game? ... The bigger end game is always how are you better at understanding the risk ... and how ultimately you can elevate this up to asset allocation strategies. When we think about long term versus short term time horizons or preference around ownership periods, there is also materiality concerns. The big innovation has to be data oriented. “It's been a complete sea change over the last 12 to 24 months, reflected in RFPs - requests for proposals - where clients are asking for information in a way that they haven't before.” There is a clear leadership effect with the biggest pension funds on the Top 50 leading the way and influencing the rest. The analogy to showing an example of one sustainable investment in a presentation to clients to when “Charlie Chaplin entered a Charlie Chaplin lookalike contest…. Its sort of an empty anecdote because it doesn’t reveal its context.” “One of the best things that I've done and most gratifying things I would say, is producing a chapter for CFA ESG investing certificate, it's chapter eight on portfolio construction and management.” The conversation with CEO of Banco Sabadell asset management in Barcelona sharing why climate action is important Understanding Jason’s personal arc and why he entered into this space. Dirk Hoozemans joined Triodos Investment Management in 2017 as Fund Manager of the Triodos Pioneer Impact Fund. He came from Robeco where he served in various senior portfolio management positions in Rotterdam, Boston and Hong Kong, including portfolio manager of Robeco Global Energy Fund and deputy portfolio manager of the Robeco NV fund. Dirk studied Econometrics at Tilburg University, and is a CFA Charterholder. Triodos Investment Management is a globally active impact investor. They see impact investing as a driving force in the transition to a more inclusive and sustainable world. Triodos Pioneer Impact Fund aims to generate positive impact and competitive financial returns from a concentrated portfolio of small- and mid-cap companies providing solutions for Triodos’ seven identified sustainable transition themes. Highlights: How Triodos Pioneer Impact Fund works and how hey find companies to invest in. The 7 themes Triodos invests in - sustainable food and agriculture, renewable resources, circular economy, sustainable mobility and infrastructure, innovation for sustainability, prosperous and healthy people. “The philosophy and treatment of investment management is very much a values based organization in that we change finance ... to finance change, and hence we want to make our capital work for good.” “Where we are different from many other more traditional ESG investors in the respect that a lot of sustainability investors are more ratings based. First and foremost ratings are backward looking. And secondly, they often measure the quality of reporting and not so much the quality of corporate culture or corporate behavior or even corporate future. So, what we really want to do is have a forward-looking sustainability analysis and see how sustainability creates opportunities for companies.” “The trend towards sustainability investment is undeniable and ESG is becoming more and more a mainstream proposition, both retail and institutional. The focus will be on moving beyond ESG and towards more impact.” Resilience in Impact management is a combination of what you specifically do and what you specifically don't do. In the long run, we believe we have a good trifecta or risk, return, impact. Sustainability scores are backwards looking and often measure the quality of the reporting The industry needs more standardisation in data and transparency. On this episode we had an insightful conversation with Troy Mortimer, who is a Sustainability & Responsible Investment (SRI) expert and until very recently the UK Head of the SRI practice at KPMG. Troy has worked globally across multiple industries, primarily asset management, over the last 20 years. He has extensive knowledge and experience relating to governance and risk, due diligence, engagement, assurance reporting and responsible investment / ESG practices to sustainability related conversations at companies and with investors. Some highlights: Institutional investors and regulators are starting to hold businesses up to a new bar. Savvy investors need to assess investments based on emerging risks. How to conduct a responsible investment due diligence. “I remember looking at one client's sustainability report that was over 500 pages, thinking, that's not an efficient way of getting information back into these key allocators of capital.” What really is a game changer is when an asset manager might push back in a constructive way on a client saying, “Here's why we think you would want to avoid this particular type of investment, or why there's a compelling argument to invest in this particular transition, or these best in class companies because of reason x, y, z.” Mark Carney said last week in in a speech that ... we can't isolate or self isolate from climate change”. So there's learning opportunities in this current situation that we really need to latch on to. Because there will be other challenges as we move ahead. And we need to make sure that we've taken those learning points and to adapt them because the situation will definitely be different” “My point with the SDGs, and frankly, with any kind of impact is that there's always going to be positive and negative impacts related to any investment. And where I found the true leaders in impacts methodology reporting, have held themselves out is to demonstrate that actually, they report both on the positive impacts as well as some of the negative impacts.” “There is good compelling argument for ESG, it has withstood a strong market shock. It benefits us all as humans on this planet, as members of society, and pastoral cares of this world that we're going to give on to our kids. This has led to introspection on what is our broader purpose as companies as individuals. The time of self-isolation has given us time to take stock of that.” Quality of investments will be key as we move out of the Covid-19 crisis. “If I had a call to action for asset owners, it would be to do your best to try to reward those companies that are making an effort to be transparent.” “The key thing is start to take action in your own way. have those conversations within your your respective companies, amongst your colleagues, inquire what's being done, look at what's going on within your own pension, and your own investment portfolio. But start to take small consistent movements, and be purposeful with it.” Time Stamp: [02:42] What is sustainable and impact investing? WHEB Asset Management is a positive impact investor focused on the opportunities created by the transition to a low carbon and sustainable global economy. Seb Beloe is the Head of Research and leads the integration of sustainability analysis within the investment process, as well as overseeing engagement activities. Previously, Seb was Head of SRI Research at Henderson Global Investors where he led on the identification and analysis of sustainability themes and company-level corporate responsibility analysis. Prior to Henderson, Seb was the Vice President of Research and Advocacy at SustainAbility. He has published several reports on sustainable business, and has been a member of numerous corporate advisory boards and awards panels. Seb has two degrees in environmental science and technology, from the University of East Anglia and Imperial College and is a Chartered Environmentalist. Highlight: You must have a long term perspective in investing. “...what’s really changed is the level of interest in sustainability and impact investing from institutional investors and retail investors as well.” We see an ESG stampede around some particularly high profile companies that are clearly providing some kind of low carbon solution. The most obvious example is Tesla. Methodology on measuring the impact and taking numbers from a company e.g. Kingspan and translating the impact into energy saved and carbon emissions. Engagement during company Annual General Meetings and proactive engagement to speak with companies’ management. You have to analyse companies and be actively looking at how they are reducing carbon emissions. It is important to frame the conversation around the business case, not just because its good for the planet. Large institutional investors are required to at least think about ESG issues, but they are also under a lot of pressure from their own beneficiaries to invest in a more responsible way. Financial sector is not beloved by people, it’s not trusted very much, but they like to invest in funds with people that they think they can trust. The partners have majority of their own money invested in the fund. THe EU green taxonomy is a very strong signal where the european economy is heading. “it's been a real privilege working with people who have that real sense of mission around environmental issues“. In this context he was responsible of the investment portfolio of Valartis Bank, has been a consultant for institutional clients and involved in the issue of derivative investment products. Prior to that, he held leading positions in financial analysis at Bank Vontobel and at Kepler Equities, where he was a responsible analyst for the first share placement of BKW FMB Energy. Prior to this, Dominique worked for the UHNWI team of Bank Vontobel AG's Private Bank. Dominique holds a Master of Science (MSc) in International Business Economics from the University of Westminster in London. Highlights: “We don’t buy sustainability reports, we buy good companies” “At the time there were a lot of sustainable funds around, but we thought that these funds were not that sustainable. Because sustainability is also a financial aspect. A lot of these funds disappeared because they were investing in business models that were not sustainable in the end. So companies that went basically bust.” Carnot capital has two well established funds - Carnot Efficient Energy Fund and Carnot Efficient Resource Fund. They also recently launched a circular economy index together with Bank Vontobel. Investing in established companies with products and services in industrial, transport and buildings technology, rather than energy transition into renewables. They also invest in resource efficiency such as food sector for example fisheries, agriculture, clean air and clean water. “And only if you ask those specific questions, you actually drill a little bit deeper than the usual biannual analyst call which is mainly very financial heavy, and governance heavy. We are able to ask a different set of questions to competing funds and that is our edge.” There is a lag between how rating agencies analyse these companies and how we interpret these companies with dialogue and deeper research and ESG ratings. Heatmaps of aggregation of the portfolio companies and SDG impact “In our experience, it is impossible to do impact investing without being an active investor.” “I think there will be two streets, two avenues. Either you analyze everything, and you analyze it with not enough depth or granularity, or you focus like us on a specific sector or even a specific portfolio.” How partnerships with banks can scale impact investing -1) create actively managed certificates and create derivatives themed around resource funds 2) traditional managed accounts where they pick out the best qualities from niche impact investors The challenges of climate change and resource scarcity will still be around after the coronavirus crisis. Highlights: [03:24] What is sustainable and impact investing? This episode is a bit different from our usual format: I recently held a webinar called “The Evolving Power of ESG: Generating Returns and Communicating with Clients”, where we discussed some key areas of interest to fund managers and investors, given the growing momentum, latest trends and key developments in the industry. I was joint in conversation by Esa Saloranta, Head of ESG and Sustainable Technology at eQ Plc. The webinar is part of a series in the build up to the ESG Investment Europe Event on 27-28 May in London. Make sure you join us at the event if you can make it. This is another initiative we have taken at ILA & Partners in partnership with Reuters Events by Thomson Reuters, to continue with our efforts to promote and scale Sustainable & Impact Investing. We hope you enjoy it ! Introduction Despite progress in creating industry standards and frameworks to help clarify ESG data, individual methodologies for the incorporation within investment decision-making remains ambiguous. This issue is heightened by the evolving demands of increasingly active stakeholders. Communicating ESG to clients in unambiguous and relevant terms has become a priority for leading asset managers. Listen to this episode to gain an expert understanding of the biggest challenges and best practices in Sustainable & Impact Investing, including: Setting the Scene & Sharing Preferred Strategies: How variance in defining ‘ESG’ leads to confusion and conflict between investment firms & investors, policymakers, clients and key stakeholders Internal Processes and Policies: How to integrate ESG into an investment company and gain an understanding of the common challenges and obstacles Improving Return Profile Through Building ESG into Your Models: How to integrate ESG factors into your models and decision process, across all portfolios and discuss what has worked best thus far, and where improvements can be made Data Sets as Part of the Investment Process: Understand which services and information are most useful and learn where to source and develop key information both externally and internally Communicating with Clients: How is ESG affecting the communication with your clients and the latest information clients are currently requesting Call to Action: What should investment firms/managers and clients do differently and the practical steps you can implement today to improve your ESG data analysis and communication Some quotes and highlights “The sustainable revolution is gaining momentum and it now represents the single greatest investment opportunity in all of history.” Al Gore, Generation IM “I believe we are on the edge of a significant capital reallocation of capital… And investors will need to fundamentally reassess portfolios because of sustainability issues.” Larry Fink, Chairman and CEO of Blackrock “The key to investing is not assessing how much an industry is going to affect society, or how much it will grow, but rather determining the competitive advantage of any given company and above all, the durability of that advantage.” - Warren Buffet “Every CEO needs to sit down and come to grips with the fact that if I don’t have teachers to teach the children of my employees, then the best employees aren’t going to come work for our company.” - Chuck Robbin, Chairman and CEO of Cisco Calls To Action: 1. As an equity fund manager, take a long terms perspective, choose the best companies in the world to go along even in this crisis. 2. Make demand use our influence as guardians of assets to ask where are the mitigations to existential threats that is surely coming down the line. 3. How are we using resources and having a net positive impact and to give back to the planet and people, more than which we are using. 4. Ask what are we doing with our investments and capital allocation, how are we getting the most of our resources long term than we are taking in the short term. 5. This is the most exciting opportunity we have ever been gifted to solve the world’s most challenging problem in a way that we can, and we get to be a part of it by funding these solutions. Trevor Neilson is co-founder and CEO of i(x) investments, an entrepreneurial, multi-strategy impact investing holding company, a platform addressing areas of human need. Prior to launching i(x) investments, Trevor served as President of G2 Investment Group where he helped lead the firm’s initiatives in energy, real estate and security. Before his work with G2, he was co-founder of Global Philanthropy Group, an advisory firm that was sold to Todd Wagner and Charity Network in 2017. Prior to his leadership of the GBC, Trevor worked closely with Bill & Melinda Gates, both in their family office and as Director of Special Projects and as a founding member of the team that created and launched the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation where he served as the Director of Public Affairs. Please learn more about Trevor Neilson using the links provided at the end of the notes. Show Notes: What is Impact Investing? Creating a multi-strategy impact investing company to create return for investors and help solve human needs. The opportunity and challenge of founding i(x) investments. The i(x) investments model, the current areas of human need and the opportunities the company focuses on. We need to get to action! We need personal commitments. We are running out of time! We have 415 parts per million of co2 in our atmosphere. The highest level of co2 that has been in our atmosphere in at least 800,000 years. The money being made on fossil fuels between JP Morgan, Wells Fargo, Citigroup - funding US$2 Tn in new projects in the last 2 years - and Mitsubishi funding new coal plants. We need elected leaders to address climate emergency in an aggressive way. We don't need more deep thoughts about how to measure impact. We need trillions of dollars of capital going into investments that address the biggest problems we have. Family offices control Trillions of dollars that we can point in this new directioN to have profound impact for the world. As consumers and investors we need to make the right choice to be part of the solution. We need to recognise that individuals decide that this is their problem and not someone else’s problem. We should be supporting activists such as Greta Thunberg, student strikes and Extinction Rebellion. Co-founder Howard W. Buffett and the impact rate of return methodology. He is also the co-author of New Text Book on ESG Investing by the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute (CFA UK) Highlights: Looking beyond the causal drivers into more active stewardship and long term sustainability There is a spectrum of capital and the markets will decide on how to react to corporates without sustainability strategy or if they decide not to price in carbon A lot of companies are over-borrowing from human capital, environmental and natural capital or cutting R&D ‘We want to avoid companies creating contingent liabilities or liabilities you don’t see on the balance sheet, which are typically extra financial, call them ESG.’ We will need abatement in hard to abate sectors like cement, fertilizers, flying, steel making, aluminum, plastics, or all that. Integrated vs exclusionary ESG vs positive impact Degrowth movement vs growth and decoupled growth ‘You need systems thinking in combination with personal agency’ ‘Stewardship Code 2020 is going to be a really important piece ... because it's putting the onus on a lot of people in the investment chain to report in a much more transparent way. Cary Krosinsky is the Co-founder of the Sustainable Finance Institute, Carbon Tracker and Real Impact Tracker, as well as a lecturer at Yale School of Management. He is the author of seven books including Sustainable Investing: Revolutions in Theory and Practice and his seventh book will look at Modern China, innovation, sustainable finance and cooperation. Cary is also an advisor to Brown University’s Sustainable Investment Fund, Deep Green Metals Inc, and principal at NPV Associates. Highlights: Being selective with experiments and ruthless with what is working and what is not Stock exchanges haven’t been providing much push for impact reporting Creating a culture of sustainable and impact investing It is essential we collaborate to solve problems together It feels like a positive to encourage foreign investment into China as foreign investors have a say over conditions for the capital deployment Ecological economics’s attempt to put prices on externalities shows that there is little use in measuring carbon footprint of a portfolio because its ultimately not very impactful What is really needed is dynamic changes in corporate strategy, investment strategies and policy and supportive policies From assessing strategies to creating a certification for financial institution at Real Impact Tracker Cary is focusing on advising companies to improve their dual sustainability finance track Some SDGs are not directly investable. We need to segment which SDGs are investable and non investable, and of the investable SDGs into the direct and indirectly investable Impact measure needs to be done at a systems level as well as a strategy level. “Finance without sustainability is a recipe for environmental and social disaster” “Sustainable investing without a business case is philanthropy” We need to run 100 or more different strategies in parallel at scale One trillion dollars of impact vs $500 trillion of tradeable assets Cary Krosinsky's personal path to impact and passion for raising awareness through education Time Stamp: [06:00] What is impact investing? John Elkington is a pioneer of the global sustainability movement, co-founding Environmental Data Services in 1978 and SustainAbility in 1987. An author of 19 books, his million-selling book The Green Consumer Guide (1988) brought mass attention to the environmental impacts of everyday products and brands. John’s Cannibals with Forks in 1997 popularised his ‘Triple Bottom Line’ concept (People, Planet, Profit) and laid the foundations for sustainable business strategy.
