In this episode of "Rhythms That Restore," Cherisse has a conversation on REST with guest & Best Selling Author Melanie Redd. Melanie shares her wisdom she has learned in her journey and as she wrote "Just Rest: A 90-Day Devotional Journey,". We discuss the vital themes of rest, simplicity, and creating space for God. Melanie shares her journey of writing over 9 books to help others grow in their personal walk with the Lord. She emphasizes the importance of mentorship, walking with friends that are ahead of you in life, in the same season and then those who are a season behind you that you can pour into through intentional living. We dive deep into: ✅ The dangers of technology addiction and its impact on faith and mental health ✅ Why setting digital boundaries is crucial for entrepreneurs and families ✅ How Sabbath Space helps users be fully present in their work, worship, and relationships ✅ The biblical principle of working hard for six days to truly rest on the seventh ✅ How to balance technology and faith in a world that's always online If you've ever felt like your phone controls you more than you control it, or if you're looking for ways to be more present with God, your family, and your business, this episode is for you.

In this final episode in our REST series, Stephanie invites us to examine the importance of not settling for anything less than the best when it comes to our relationship with God. Our hearts are designed to find true delight and worship in Him alone. Stephanie reflects on Jesus' analogy of a snake and a stone, highlighting the dangers of settling for lesser things and the significance of choosing to love, worship, and find delight solely in God. Our restless souls are often a sign that God is inviting us into deeper intimacy and delight with Him. Throughout the episode, Stephanie passionately explores the idea of true rest and how it goes hand in hand with finding delight in the glory of God. She shares practical insights on how our hearts can align with God's purpose for us, bringing peace and contentment even in the midst of life's challenges. She discusses the dangers of our culture's focus on self and how it hinders our ability to cling to God. She emphasizes the importance of cultivating intimacy with Him, surrendering ourselves entirely and experiencing the powerful love that He lavishes upon us. If you are longing for a deeper connection with God and others, beyond the routines of organized Christianity, this episode is a must-listen. Join us as we journey together towards a restful soul that finds true delight in the presence of our Heavenly Father. Welcome to Living Hope Church in Williamsburg, VA. Join us this week as we continue to walk through Biblical Rest. Last week we heard what rest is not. This week Pastor Bill Francavilla walks us through what rest really is and how scripture defines rest.
Stephanie continues to unpack the concept of contentment in the context of rest, and how it relates to our restless souls. She begins by sharing a heartwarming story about her beloved grandmother's endearing habit of leaving a bit of chocolate on their baguette, calling it the "Chocolate Queen" or, in French, "La Reine en chocolat." It is the little things like this that remind us of the simple joys in life and the importance of celebration. Stephanie then delves into the transformation of our hearts and minds, emphasizing that the shape of our hearts and minds determines our perception and experience of contentment or discontent. Through her personal reflections and biblical insights, she invites us to allow God's transformative power to shape our lives, leading to inner contentment and rest for our souls, even amidst the challenges we face. Stephanie questions why we often strive for achievement before finding rest and contentment. She reminds us that true contentment can be found in Christ's presence, without the need for conquest. The war has already been won! She invites us to examine our own restlessness and discontentment, urging us to find joy in what fits us and see it as enough. She shares practical tips on dealing with restlessness caused by discontent and emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and addressing our pain. Stephanie highlights the deeper spiritual rest that can be found in God's presence, beyond just physical rest. She explores the concept of settling for the wrong "Promised Lands" in our lives and encourages us to identify and prioritize the right places where we can practice for Heaven. GOOD TO KNOW! Welcome to Living Hope Church in Williamsburg, VA. Please join us as Pastor Bill Francavilla begins a new series about Biblical Rest. Listen in as we hear what Not Resting is.
Have you ever wondered about God's love for you? Before time even began, Jesus chose to adopt us into His family. It is a comforting truth to rest in, knowing that before we even existed, He looked forward to delighting in us. Moreover, this profound love extends beyond our actions and abilities – there is nothing we can do to deserve His approval. The builders of Notre Dame Cathedral recognized the significance of Scripture, incorporating its symbolism into their architectural marvel. Discover how access to Scripture reveals God's identity, His actions, and our own identity and purpose. Jesus, the Son of God, humbled Himself to become a servant and died on a cross. By recognizing God as the center of the universe, we find rest and shift the focus away from ourselves. Christ's ascension to heaven opened the door for all of us in Him to be filled with the living water of the Spirit. This abundant and infinite supply of water is available to each and every one of us who has placed our faith and trust in Him alone. Once we receive the Holy Spirit, rest is modeled after Christ with childlike faith and a lifetime of faithfulness. Imagine the stunning sculptures adorning the hidden side of the stones that held up the ceilings of Notre Dame. Carved as an offering of worship to God, those sculptures remained unseen by human eyes but were known to God alone. Let us consider how we can present our lives as works of art in worship to God. Adoption plays a significant role in understanding our identity in Christ. With three witnesses – the angelic realm, the world of humans, and our own hearts – we are marvelously adopted into God's family. In this new kingdom where Jesus reigns, we gain a new authority and embrace a new inheritance as sons and daughters of God. Drawing from Paul's teachings in Romans, we explore the profound concept of adoption in contrast to Roman cultural practices. We invite you to ponder the transformative power of God's rest and satisfaction, as exemplified in the encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well. Stephanie gently but firmly challenges us not to overlook the deep spiritual truths we may have heard many times before. Let us guard against spiritual restlessness and find true rest in the richness of God's Word. We hope you find this episode inspiring and thought-provoking. As always, if you're hungry for more spiritual nourishment, consider inviting Stephanie and the Gospel Spice team to speak at your church or women's ministry event. They bring a feast of practical, biblical truth, and genuine love and concern. Our prayer is that this episode serve as a reminder of God's unwavering love for you, and invite you to explore the depths of rest that can only be found in Him. Amen! GOOD TO KNOW! What if what we needed was a solid reminder of Jesus' very real presence in our lives? What if walking in His footsteps for a few weeks might prove the cure to our endless challenges, so that we may view our life as He does? It's said that a visit to Israel will forever change your experience of Scripture. That statement is right. But more than that, it will forever change your experience of Jesus. Here at Gospel Spice, our goal is to know Jesus more. It means deepening our theology, for sure, but what about discovering the little things Jesus enjoyed? Think of your best friends, or deeply loved ones. You know their favorite color, food, and scent. Not because it's life-changing, but because it is about intimacy, and knowing one another well. So, how about discovering one of Jesus' favorite childhood smells, or the Galilee skyline He woke up to every morning? It may not alter your theology, but it will help you know Him more. Do you need a full measure of His peace and comfort? Do you need to be reminded of His love for you? Do you need His guidance to navigate your life right now? Stephanie just returned from the Holy Land and invites you to walk in the footsteps of Jesus on this virtual tour of first-century Israel from the comfort of your own home. We will be journeying through Scripture together to meet Jesus where He walked, taught, and fellowshipped with His friends in Galilee. We will encounter Him on the Passion walk, from the Upper Room to Golgotha. We will meet Him in the Garden Tomb. So, pack your virtual sandals, along with a very real Bible and pen, to journey through Scripture in the footsteps of Jesus! Sign up today at gospelspice.com/footsteps for all the details. Stephanie is on a mission to guide us closer to God through a unique blend of biblical flavors and French culture. In this season of Gospel Spice, she explores the theme of rest, inviting us to discover the profound joy and peace that comes from abiding in Christ. Stephanie encourages us to experience rest not merely as a physical break, but as a deep, life-altering encounter with the Living God. In this particular episode, Stephanie shares her insights and personal discoveries on the crucial topic of experiential heart knowledge of Christ. She draws inspiration from the Apostle Paul, who wholeheartedly embraced the path of surrender and sacrifice for the sake of knowing and having fellowship with Christ. Stephanie reminds us that true righteousness stems from faith in Christ, unleashing the boundless wellspring of rest that He offers. Stephanie references the pivotal passage in Romans 8:1-8. This Scripture serves as a guiding light in exploring the transformative power of rest in our lives. In the upcoming weeks, you don't want to miss the next four episodes that revolve around a weekend retreat where Stephanie was a keynote speaker. During this powerful event, she delved into the essence of rest, sharing her knowledge and experiences with eager participants. Stephanie extends a heartfelt invitation to all listeners to join her in practicing rest, as she leads us on an inspirational journey to encounter the restorative presence of our mighty God. Stephanie discusses the incredible concept of dwelling in God's presence and finding delight in His glory. She challenges us to examine why we often feel the need to fill ourselves up, reminding us that we have unlimited access to the infinite supply within us through Christ. Stephanie compassionately explores the struggle of believing that God provides only a limited supply when He promises us an abundance that knows no bounds. Stephanie encourages us to bridge the gap between what we say we believe and what we truly believe. She shares her unique perspective as a bilingual individual, highlighting the richness of the French language that possesses two distinct words for "know." This linguistic nuance inspires us to pursue a deeper, more intimate knowledge of Christ, one that goes beyond mere intellectual understanding. Rest is not a one-time event; rather, it is a continuous process of surrendering to God's will. Stephanie gently reminds us that when we find ourselves aligned with the perfect will of God, true happiness and peace fill our hearts. However, she acknowledges the challenges inherent in surrendering to God's will, even when we know it is ultimately what is best for us. Drawing from Romans 8:26-28, Stephanie emphasizes the indispensable role of the Holy Spirit in helping us pray when we are at a loss for words. She invites us to tap into the wellspring of the Holy Spirit within us. This endless source of refreshment and guidance sustains and nourishes us on our journey of rest. Let us embrace the life-giving rest found in Christ and strive to reduce the gap between what we claim to believe and what our lives genuinely reflect. Before we conclude, we want to give a special shoutout to the Gospel Spice community. Your support and engagement have been a tremendous source of encouragement for Stephanie and the entire team. If you wish to dig deeper into the themes explored in Gospel Spice or are interested in booking Stephanie as a speaker for your next event, visit our website for more information or reach out to us directly. Thank you for being a part of the Gospel Spice family. May this season of rest bring about a transformative encounter with God's presence, allowing you to experience true rest in your everyday life. GOOD TO KNOW! This is the third of 6 episodes on rest. Stephanie initially taught keynotes at several distinct events and, surprisingly, the event organizers asked her to speak on the topic of rest. They didn't know they were all asking for the same theme. Stephanie crafted unique talks for each event, and wondered how this serendipitous convergence on the theme of rest might apply to you, our beloved Podcast audience. So, here are the keynotes she gave on the topic of dwelling in the presence of God, and delighting in His glory, as the essence, goal and means of rest. Following up on our previous episode (make sure to tune in!), Stephanie dives deep into the art and mystery of contentment, as discussed by the Puritans. They recognized that true contentment is an elusive concept, often misunderstood by a world that seeks fulfillment in the accumulation of material possessions and worldly success. Stephanie explores how our discontent and restlessness can arise from striving for more, whether it be popularity, wealth, or approval. Drawing from the story of the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11, she highlights the dangers of self-promotion and seeking to make a name for ourselves. Instead, rest lies in surrendering to God's plan and finding delight in Him. Stephanie unpacks the powerful message of Matthew 11 in relation to finding rest and highlights the need for repentance, rest, quietness, and trust in our journey of salvation and strength. Throughout, she reminds us of the transformative power of delighting in God, especially in times of hardship and affliction. Stephanie leads us on a journey to experience a fresh measure of rest and a deeper revelation of God's goodness. Discover how delighting in God, even in the midst of challenges, can bring true strength and victory. GOOD TO KNOW! This is the second of 6 episodes on rest. Today, we want to address a topic that is all too familiar to many of us: weariness. Stephanie vulnerably shares her own experience of a recent, literal, physical nervous breakdown, caused by years of chronic pain and the wrongly placed belief that with enough faith, she could do it all. She warns against believing this lie, which can lead to shame and guilt. True faith is not about relying on our own abilities but placing our trust in God. Understanding our limits can help us truly understand what it means to have faith. This is the first of 6 episodes on rest. We dive deep into the concept of weariness and how it affects our lives. Did you know that the word "weary" in Greek is closely related to "hard work"? Stephanie shares her personal journey of coming to Jesus for rest. She explains how weariness is not just physical exhaustion but also the accumulation of pain and anxiety. When we allow long-term stress to take hold, it can lead to snapping over small things and narrow our ability to cope with situations or people. Stephanie reminds us that God has infinite strength, and He does not need us to carry the burdens of life in our own strength. Jesus, though He came in weakness, is the fullness of God and has no weakness. We are encouraged to bring our weaknesses to God, as they are the one thing He does not possess. Worry and anxiety often stem from not fully embracing the truth that Jesus is in control. Stephanie shares powerful insights about how distractions like fear, shame, guilt, approval, expectations, and comparison can burden us and rob us of finding true rest. It's a timely message for our culture, where discontent seems to be prevalent. Aside from the wisdom shared, we want to highlight Stephanie's availability for speaking engagements. If you're looking for a dynamic speaker to address various topics related to scripture study and seasonal events, make sure to check out Stephanie's page at gospelspice.com/speaking. Her passion for the gospel shines through in her speaking engagements, inspiring others to explore the rich depths of God's Word. Just as Jesus condemned the Pharisees for putting heavy burdens on others without carrying them themselves, we aim to offer a fresh perspective on Matthew 11, where Jesus invites us to come to Him for rest. Scripture challenges us to take this invitation to rest seriously. We pray that the Holy Spirit will bring transformative rest into your life. Our desire is for you to experience the peace and freedom that comes from surrendering your burdens to Jesus. If you're currently facing restlessness, discontent, or anxiety, don't fret or worry. Remember that God is in control, and He is not surprised by whatever challenges you face. Trust in Him and find rest in His love and provision. Hey friend! Are you feeling overwhelmed by the constant rush of life? Imagine taking an entire year off, not just to unwind, but to restore your soul and reestablish your trust in God's provision. Sounds wonderful, doesn't it? But also, utterly impossible. Inspired by Leviticus 25 –a scripture that once seemed obscure and completely irrelevant to me and my life (I mean seriously, Leviticus???)– I learned a transformative lesson about the importance of rest. This divine directive, revolutionary even thousands of years ago, still holds powerful insights for our lives today. We share a hearty conversation about how rest, as intended by God, can be both a restorative experience and a test of trust. A challenge so often brushed aside in our workaholic culture. We also consider the profound idea that rest is a concept highlighted by Jesus Himself. It's time we reconsidered the value of intentional rest and, in doing so, discover a journey of faith and trust in God's and His provision for our life. So, are you ready to uncover the wisdom of rest as we delve into Leviticus 25? (Trust me, you'll definitely learn something you didn't know from this episode!) Let's dive right in. We know God rested on the seventh day after creation. But what if the word rest has a different meaning than we thought? What if Jesus offers something deeper than physical rest, inviting His followers to experience satisfaction and peace by understanding and following God's will? Guest Gregory Hall, the author of Rethinking Rest, explores the theology of rest in an accessible and appealing manner in his book and in this conversation, where we dig into the concepts of rest, Sabbath, and Shabot and how it all fits into God's grace. Check out the show notes.
Today's concept of biblical rest… isn't working. Sermon: RestThis week Pastor Jared preaches a standalone message on what it means to truly REST. Culturally we often confuse relaxation for rest. Relaxing is what you do when you're tired. Resting is what you do when you're depleted. How are you feeling today?Biblical REST begins with STILLNESS and UNDERSTANDING.Stillness in His (the Father) presenceUnderstanding His (the Father) natureThis sermon was recorded on May 29th, 2022.
In today's Bible based discussion, we talk about Biblical rest, burnout, and take a look at Matthew 11:28-30 & Hebrews 4:9-10 ESV. This last Sunday we gathered to share stories and reflections from our Scattered season this Spring. Matt shares a short message calling us back to the simplicity of love and a reminder of the ethos of New Testament discipleship. The church forms as a byproduct when normal people listen and try to obey the prompting of the Holy Spirit. Finally, Dave gives clarity on our community invitation to Biblical Rest in July.
In the last episode, we talked about the Biblical idea and encouragement behind Biblical REST. God wants us to rest and in fact, we need to rest in Him. Resting in Him will produce more rest in our life overall. What how do we go about cultivating true rest in our busy too full lives? That's what we are diving into today! This might not happen overnight, in fact, it might be a long road to setting better habits in your life. We are so use to living at break neck speeds in our society, it can be SO hard to reframe our concepts of what a productive life looks like. Today we are going to chat about a few things: Getting more sleep, getting OFF social media, being intentional with your rest time, and MAKING the time for rest. Get MORE sleep. "One study highlighted that we are sleeping between one and two hours fewer per night than people did sixty years ago, and two and a half hours fewer than a hundred years ago. However, ultimately the practice of getting a good night's sleep is rooted in the outworking of our theology. We believe God has made sleep an integral part of our humanity (Ps. 127:2), but as with all good gifts from God, we have a sinful tendency to refuse or misuse it. While some may struggle with wanting too much sleep, many of us struggle with wanting to make do with too little. In our productivity-mad society, we idolize activity and minimize the need for sleep. We can even pride ourselves in how little sleep we seem to need. Stories of famous Christians throughout history who reported getting by on very little sleep fuel the idea that less sleep is more godly and an example of great faith. What is often forgotten is that many of these Christians also suffered terribly ill health, and others dies young. That's why I want to make the case that adequate sleep is a far better example of great faith." - Refreshed, page 52. I have struggled deeply with this concept. I feel like I need to constantly worry about the next step and pushing myself harder. As Ive grown in my journey, I've learned that often, I need to just go to sleep and be wise with my time. God will meet our needs. "I believe God will look after my family, my work, or my studies. I refuse to believe the lie that everything depends on me. I believe in God's sovereignty and trust that he does not need me to overwork and under sleep to get all of the work done (Ps. 127:1-2). I believe God created my humanity, and I need to follow his guide for maintaining it. I refuse to believe the lie that I'm unique. I'm no stronger than others and therefor equally in need of his gift of sleep (Ps 3:5, 4:8). I believe my body and soul are so closely bound together that each impacts the other. I refuse to believe the lie that if I neglect my body, my soul and mind will still flourish. I believe my sleep is one of the best illustrations of my rest in Christ. I refuse to believe the lie that I must be known for my sacrificial service to Christ rather than by my resting on him. I believe in God alone and refuse to worship idols. I refuse to idolize work success and belittle sleep. I refuse to idolize late night entertainment and neglect sleep. I refuse to idolize service at the expense of sleep. I refuse to make impressing my boss more important than sleep. I refuse to idolize a perfect home at the cost of damaging the temple of my body. Our sleep patters reveal our idols." - Refreshed, pages 53-54. How do we get more sleep? Discipline "We need God's help to translate this conviction into action. Ask him for the willpower to make the necessary schedule adjustments and lifestyles changes."
I’m guilty of turning on the tv to relax. Studies have shown that staring at a tv actually doesn’t relax your brain. Although you’re body is no longer in motion, it’s the illusion of rest, because you’re brain is still being engaged. I do the same thing in my spiritual life. I strive do more for God, be a better person, do more for church. thinking I need to do more for my heart to be at peace. Did you know that Jesus said he wants to give us rest from the feeling of striving in our spiritual lives? He says in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” God gives us rest. Stop trying, striving, and running your wheels! Rest in the promise that His grace is sufficient for you and I. Take a deep breath with me. Don’t let the screen time of spiritually striving keep you from having real rest. Join us this week as we sit down with our dear friend, Jacob Currin, to talk about Rest and subsequently, Peace. Jacob is a sophomore Human Development and Family Studies major at Anderson University, SC, and he loves reading, writing in his favorite coffee shops, and intentional conversation. We talk about what Biblical Rest is, what Biblical Peace is, how the two are found, and how they're related. In the first part of the episode (3:51-15:30), we talk a little about the culture we live in and how society views and often suppresses Rest. We discuss seeing the illusion of "being not as busy" as Rest and talk about some times we haven't had Rest. We each share some tangible ways we find Rest throughout our days and weeks and what that produces in our Lives. In the second part of the episode (16:02-32:07), we focus on Biblical Rest—Shabbat. We talk about what Rest actually is and how we can live in it. In the Bible, Shabbat (or Sabbath) is a whole day in which you Rest and live in the promises of God. We take a look at Isaiah 58 and discuss the idea of Resting by doing the things we enjoy for the glory of God. Every day is a Sabbath within the New Covenant, so we need to Rest in Christ every day and we look at how we can do that in our lives actively. We talk about how Rest as a spiritual discipline has been distorted by American thought, and even the American Church, to almost be a bad thing. We look at the biblical chiasm and centrality of Rest in the Genesis account of Creation. In the third part of the episode (32:37-38:05), we take a closer look at the concept of Biblical Peace—Shalom. Biblical Peace, or Shalom, is not a lack of conflict, but rather a fullness of heart and spirit in God. It is a sense of completeness or wholeness. When we have Peace, we are whole in the presence of God and our own works and accomplishments pale in comparison to our satisfaction in Him. Instead of worrying about our circumstances or problems, we are focused on God because we are in intimate Fellowship with Him. Peace flows from God's presence. Colossians 3 says, "set your mind on things that are above, and the God of Peace will give you Peace." The way that we set our eyes on things that are above and focus on our Fellowship with God is through Rest. Jacob brings Romans 5 into the discussion and talks about his experience with the first few verses of that chapter. In the fourth and final part of the episode (38:35-1:07:19) Jacob shares his testimony. He shares his struggle with Depression, Anxiety, finding and defining his Self-Worth, and eventually finding Peace through Rest. As you go about your week, remember this: We can't get Rest and Peace outside of God. QUOTE“Genesis 1 isn’t just telling you about what type of world you’re living in; it’s showing you, as a Israelite reader, that your life of worship rhythms are woven into the fabric of the universe.”KEY TAKEAWAYSThe idea of resting and the number seven are intimately connected in the Bible. In Genesis 1, the word or number "seven" has two key symbolic meanings: seven represents a full and complete world, and getting to seven is a linear journey from one to seven. The rhythm of practicing sabbath or resting every seventh day is one way that humans can imitate God and act like they are participating in the new creation.SHOW NOTESWelcome to our second episode tracing the theme of seventh-day rest in the Bible! In part 1 (0-18:30), Tim shares some of the numeric symbolism in Genesis 1. The opening line of Genesis 1 has seven words, and the central word, untranslated in English, is two Hebrew letters, the first and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet: aleph and taw. When one isolates the theme of time in Genesis 1, another design pattern emerges that provides a foundation for all of Israel’s rituals of sacred time.Tim points out that there are many other ways the number seven is symbolic in the Genesis narrative: there are seven words in Genesis 1:1, and fourteen words in Genesis 1:2. There are seven paragraphs in Genesis 1:1-2:3 marked by “evening and morning.” The concluding seventh paragraph in Genesis 2:1-3 begins three lines which have seven words each (Gen 2:2-3a).In part 2 (18:30-28:30), Tim summarizes a series of details about the literary design of Genesis ch. 1 from Umberto Cassuto's commentary on Genesis:"In view of the importance ascribed to the number seven generally, and particularly in the story of Creation, this number occurs again and again in the structure of our section. The following details are deserving of note:(a). After the introductory verse (1:1), the section is divided into seven paragraphs, each of which appertains to one of the seven days. An obvious indication of this division is to be seen in the recurring sentence, And there was evening and there was morning, such-and-such a day. Hence the Masoretes were right in placing an open paragraph [i.e. one that begins on a new line] after each of these verses. Other ways of dividing the section suggested by some modern scholars are unsatisfactory.(b–d). Each of the three nouns that occur in the first verse and express the basic concepts of the section, viz God [אֱלֹהִים ʾElōhīm] heavens [שָׁמַיִם šāmayim], earth [אֶרֶץ ʾereṣ], are repeated in the section a given number of times that is a multiple of seven: thus the name of God occurs thirty-five times, that is, five times seven (on the fact that the Divine Name, in one of its forms, occurs seventy times in the first four chapters, see below); earth is found twenty-one times, that is, three times seven; similarly heavens (or firmament, רָקִיעַ rāqīaʿ) appears twenty-one times.(e). The ten sayings with which, according to the Talmud, the world was created (Aboth v 1; in B. Rosh Hashana 32a and B. Megilla 21b only nine of them are enumerated, the one in 1:29, apparently, being omitted)—that is, the ten utterances of God beginning with the words, and … said—are clearly divisible into two groups: the first group contains seven Divine fiats enjoining the creation of the creatures, to wit, ‛Let there be light’, ‘Let there be a firmament’, ‘Let the waters be gathered together’, ‘Let the earth put forth vegetation’, ‘Let there be lights’, ‘Let the waters bring forth swarms’, ‘Let the earth bring forth’; the second group comprises three pronouncements that emphasize God’s concern for man’s welfare (three being the number of emphasis), namely, ‘Let us make man’ (not a command but an expression of the will to create man), ‘Be fruitful and multiply’, ‘Behold I have given unto you every plant yielding seed’. Thus we have here, too, a series of seven corresponding dicta.(f). The terms light and day are found, in all, seven times in the first paragraph, and there are seven references to light in the fourth paragraph.(g). Water is mentioned seven times in the course of paragraphs two and three.(h). In the fifth and sixth paragraphs forms of the word חַיָּה ḥayyā [rendered ‘living’ or ‘beasts’] occur seven times.(i). The expression it was good appears seven times (the seventh time—very good).(j). The first verse has seven words.(k). The second verse contains fourteen words—twice seven.(l). In the seventh paragraph, which deals with the seventh day, there occur the following three consecutive sentences (three for emphasis), each of which consists of seven words and contains in the middle the expression the seventh day:And on the seventh day God finished His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work whichHe had done.So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it.(m). The words in the seventh paragraph total thirty-five—five times seven. To suppose that all this is a mere coincidence is not possible.§ 6. This numerical symmetry is, as it were, the golden thread that binds together all the parts of the section and serves as a convincing proof of its unity against the view of those—and they comprise the majority of modern commentators—who consider that our section is not a unity but was formed by the fusion of two different accounts, or as the result of the adaptation and elaboration of a shorter earlier version."U. Cassuto, A Commentary on the Book of Genesis: Part I, From Adam to Noah (Genesis I–VI 8), trans. Israel Abrahams (Jerusalem: The Magnes Press, The Hebrew University, 1998), pages 13–15.Tim says all of this numerical symbolism is completely intentional. The authors want us to learn that seven represents both a whole completed creation and a journey to that completeness. In part 3 (28:30-41:00), Jon asks why the number seven became so symbolic in ancient Hebrew culture. Tim says the origins of the number seven being associated with completeness is likely tied to the lunar calendar of moon cycles. The biblical Hebrew word for “month” is “moon” (חדש). Each month consisted of 29.5 days, and each month consisted of four 7.3-day cycles, making a “complete” cycle of time. However, the sabbath cycle is independent of the moon cycle, and sabbaths do not coincide with the new moon. It is patterned after creation, and stands outside of any natural cycle of time.Tim then makes an important note on Hebrew word play. Seven was symbolic in ancient near eastern and Israelite culture and literature. It communicated a sense of “fullness” or “completeness” (שבע “seven” is spelled with the same consonants as the word שבע “complete/full”). This makes sense of the pervasive appearance of “seven” patterns in the Bible. For more information on this, Tim cites Maurice H. Farbridge’s book, Studies in Biblical and Semitic Symbolism, 134-37.In part 4 (41:00-52:30), Jon asks what it means for God to rest?In response, Tim says there are two separate but related Hebrew concepts and words for rest. The Hebrew word shabat means “to cease from.” God ceases from his work because “it is finished” (Gen 2:1). Compare with Joshua 5:12, “The manna ceased (shabat) on that day….”The Hebrew word nuakh means “to take up residence.” Compare with Exodus 10:14, “The locusts came up over the land of Egypt and rested (nuakh) in all the land.” When God or people nuakh, it always involves settling into a place that is safe, secure, and stable. 2 Samuel 7:1 says, “Now when King David dwelt in his house, for Yahweh had provided rest from his enemies….”The drama of the story, Tim notes, is the question as to whether humans and God will nuakh together? All of this sets a foundation for later biblical stories of Israel entering in the Promised Land, a land of rest.In part 5 (52:30-end), Tim asks what it means that God blessed the seventh day?Tim cites scholar Mathilde Frey:“Set apart from all other days, the blessing of the seventh day establishes the seventh part of created time as a day when God grants his presence in the created world. It is then his presence that provides the blessing and the sanctification. The seventh day is blessed and established as the part of time that assures fruitfulness, future-orientation, continuity, and permanence for every aspect of life within the dimension of time. The seventh day is blessed by God’s presence for the sake of the created world, for all nature, and for all living beings.” (Mathilde Frey, The Sabbath in the Pentateuch, 45)Tim says in Genesis 1, the symbolism of seven is a view that the “seventh day” is the culmination of all history. Tim cites scholar Samuel H. Balentine.“Unlike the previous days, the seventh day is simply announced. There is no mention of evening or morning, no mention of a beginning or ending. The suggestion is that the primordial seventh day exists in perpetuity, a sacred day that cannot be abrogated by the limitations common to the rest of the created order.” (Samuel H. Balentine, The Torah’s Vision of Worship, 93)Tim also cites scholar Robert Lowry: “The seventh-day account does not end with the expected formula, “there was evening and morning,” that concluded days one through six. Breaking the pattern in this way emphasizes the uniqueness of the seventh day and opens the door to an eschatological interpretation. Literarily, the sun has not yet set on God’s Sabbath.” (Richard H. As we enter into the Advent Season we are going to continue studying the book of Leviticus through a series entitled "Anticipating Advent." We are going to explore Leviticus through the lens of each traditional Advent theme. For this sermon (Leviticus 23), the following outline: 1) Biblical Rest is Remembrance 2) Biblical Rest is Rehearsal 3) Biblical Rest is Renewal If you have any questions or would like to discuss the subject matter of this sermon, please don't hesitate to contact Mike either via phone (314.899.0047) or email mike@citychurchstl.org.
Biblical rest is more than just sleeping. We as physical beings need that rest. However, we also need Jesus. Bottom line, that is how we are going to find rest. "You'll never be able to fully rest until you're aligned with God." So what does that mean? Our hearts were made to give God glory. Matthew 22 Psalm 62:1-2 says, “Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.” St. Augustine says in his Confessions, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” We need to be taking that time with Jesus to refill our hearts and give the true rest and rejuvenation. Resting can be enjoying things with other people, fellowshiping, taking walks in His creation, worshiping and praying. I want to encourage you to rest in God and put on your schedule to take time with God. Make time to read your Bible and pray. Put in your calendar a day of rest. This is a gift that has been given to us.
