Welcome to Season 2, Episode 56! In today's In Case You Missed It (ICYMI) Encore Episode, we revisit Season 1, Episode 62 where we discuss the history of Japanese food in America. So many Asian foods in America are expected to be cheap either in price or quality, but Japanese food is one of the few Asian cuisines that is viewed as more refined and deserving of higher prices. However, it wasn't always that way. We took time to discuss that in this episode. One high end Japanese restaurant we mentioned was Shojin with locations in Downtown Los Angeles and Culver City. We also shared What Are We Watching and discussed the Netflix Rom-Com Love Hard starring Jimmy O. Yang. We gave our thoughts both good and bad on the Asian representation in this movie. Welcome to Episode 62! It's time to bring back another episode on the history of an Asian Pacific American food. In this episode, we talk about the history of Japanese food in America. We also bring back another segment of What Are We Watching and discuss the new Netflix Rom-Com Love Hard starring Jimmy O. Yang. Episode 14 Love Hard: A quick episode breaking down of this Holiday rom-com from Netflix. Meg joins us from O'ahu to give us her thoughts on this ground-breaking(?) romantic comedy, starring Nina Dobrev and Jimmy O. Yang. Is this the first American rom-com with an Asian male lead? Hear our thoughts on the movie as well as its attempt at Asian representation. Also Fact Check: Oops, how could we not mention that Vanessa Hudgens is a Filipina lead in all of her Netflix movies!?! For today's episode, we invited guests Monic & Jenelle of "Is Marriage Worth It" podcast to discuss the Netflix movie Lovehard. It's a romantic comedy with all the expected romcom antics. We discuss if the plot would work in real life and we tackle the question is Diehard a Christmas movie?
In this weeks episode Daria and Jenny get fully into the holiday spirit with Netflix's latest Christmas romantic comedy, LoveHard. We both truly loved this movie, and it felt like a modern take on those classic Christmas romcoms we grew up on. It had all the tropes we were dying to see, portrayed in a fresh new way with a cast we just couldn't stop gushing about. We also had a deep dive into all things food at Thanksgiving, how critics on RottenTomatoes hate joy, Jenny's impassioned tangent on the true meaning of the song Baby It's Cold Outside, some of our favorite Christmas movies and we have yet another Tessa Bailey book to recommend - it's a holiday one this time! Strap in because it's a packed episode that features Kevin and Chris taking their time further discussing Last Night in Soho and The French Dispatch after Kevin had a chance to see them. The duo also breaks down their feelings on Eternals and Antlers while Chris talks about the upcoming Red Notice and Home Sweet Home Alone along with the quaint rom-com, LoveHard and Kevin goes back into the vault to discuss a dated NBC sitcom, Outsourced.
Healthy Healing from Grief with Gaylene Moyers From her first major grief journey, when she lost her parents at 19, to when she lost her beloved daughter and unborn grandchild in an accident, Gaylene Moyer's grasped the difference between shutting off her grief to healing from it. Gaylene honors her daughter and her own loss by letting her experience help support many others to move forward from their staggering loss of a child. Where some of us may have been brought to our knees or ran from our feelings, or just confused about how to grieve, Gaylene shares with an open heart, the mindset and practices that helped her move through her grief in a healthy and meaningful way. Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Hear how Gaylene and her family's grief journey led her to create a community of people seeking to support and be supported in a positive and helpful way. Learn how old ideas and beliefs of grief can block us from moving forward. Discover the practices that can truly help us during an unimaginable loss. Connect with Gaylene on Instagram Check out Gaylene's Facebook Group: LoveHardProject Check out the LoveHardProject on Instagram The Miracle Morning, by Hal Elrod Episode Highlights: A Space to Honor and Love with Positivity Months after her daughter's fatal accident, Gaylene created a Facebook group and the hashtag #lovehard to honor of her daughter. In 2016, against the backdrop of a recent election and so much negativity and anger, Gaylene wanted to create a space where people could post only positive content inspired by life and loss of her daughter, Kylee. The members of the group organically shifted it to a place where they shared on their loved ones passing and Gaylene saw that it was what the community needed. Gaylene began posting mindset tips and healthy grieving practices that the community truly felt supported by. Her Own Grief Journey Gaylene leaned on her faith and knew she would be with her family again. Although she lost her daughter, she wanted her other children to know they were worth living for. Her daughter suggested a grief support class at the hospital from which she had benefited. In the class, Gaylene discovered that people were actually worried and confused about their grieving process. Gaylene challenges the taboo around grief and loss and works to normalize talking about and showing up to grief in a way that is helpful and supportive. Loving Suggestions for Grieving Parents Get out of bed. We can't heal without feeling the emotions. We have to feel what we want to heal, to move forward from the intensity of the grief. Practice gratitude. Though it's so hard not to let anger overwhelm us, we can be grateful for being able to feel the emotion of anger. Being grateful for good and positive things can be challenging at this time, but we can somehow find gratitude for the challenges and trials. Get outside. Nature isn't worried about how we grieve or how long. We can cry, think, be vulnerable, heal in nature, without feeling judgement. We can be surrounded by the splendid cycles of life in nature. “We feel we are supposed to save our kids from hurt and harm. We do the very best we can and the rest is left to faith/ god/ the Universe/ a higher power” Support is so important and it may not be from our family members that are grieving, too. Find someone or some people that are consistent and helpful rather than telling you how to grieve. Find a way to work past the guilt, it doesn't bring our children back. Tell Grief to Take a Hike! Gaylene designed a program called ‘Tell Grief to Take a Hike' that takes place while hiking in community and practicing healthy grief strategies as they move through powerful modules that support a healthy grief journey. Practices and tools from our ‘backpack' include unpacking old ideas and beliefs around grief, gratitude, and finding strength in the group. Why is Mindset So Important? Many of the parents who have lost their children come with the mindset that they have nothing to live for and that they don't want to get out of bed. Some feel guilt and shame around the idea of healing is wrong when it comes to losing children. Gaylene shares the difference between ‘moving on' and ‘moving forward'. We can develop our empathy and bring purpose by using our experience to help others. Shifting our mindsets from being held hostage by grief to having willingness to feel the feelings and pass on the healing to others. Healing is possible. It does not mean a cure. The broken heartedness of a loss is like a broken bone that we protect and not put weight on. We protect it and do all we can to heal so that we can use it again. We protect our heart and do all the healthy things we can so that we can use it again to help others. Gaylene's Daily Non Negotiables Her morning routine is inspired by the book The Miracle Morning, by Hal Elrod. Meditation, reading, visualization, affirmations, gym, and, then, she can start her day. That morning time is silent and beautiful. She ends her day with three gratitudes and three things she needs to do the following morning or day. About Gaylene Gaylene Moyers is a grief support coach that guides parents to embrace peace & purpose after the death of a child. She is the founder of the Facebook group LoveHardProgram and #LoveHard that offers a space for grieving loved ones. There she posts her powerful mindset and grief tips upon which her grief journey program is based. Gaylene's ‘Tell Grief to Take a Hike' is a nature-based grieving support program that offers modules that move us forward in our grieving journey in a safe and healthy way. Enjoy the Podcast?
