Join Joe McDonald as he discusses the importance of spiritual awareness upon awakening, as outlined in Steps 10 and 11 of Alcoholics Anonymous. Joe explains that by starting our day with conscious reflection and prayer, we can use our mental faculties with confidence, knowing they are working for us and aligned with our Higher Power. However, if we neglect this spiritual connection, we risk letting our minds control us, telling us who we are and distorting our perception of the world. Joe emphasizes that the mind is a tool, and we must awaken each day to ensure it serves us rather than enslaving us.In Alcoholics Anonymous, Step 10 helps us maintain self-awareness and accountability, while Step 11 encourages deepening our conscious contact with our Higher Power. Joe reminds us that by awakening to spiritual awareness each day, we keep our minds in check and stay aligned with divine guidance. To support and learn from journeys like Joe McDonald, please like, comment, and share. So let's talk about Black Men & Mental Health... A lot of us men grew up in an environment that tells us to “man up” at a very young age. As a result, we grow up as adults with unresolved traumas and issues. Seeking professional help is never easy; it is even more difficult if you come from a minority. Black men struggle to look for professional help due to lack of representation, and only 26% of Hispanic and Black American men ever availed of mental health services despite experiencing obvious symptoms of mental health issues. That's why in continuation of our Men's health month series, we will be talking about everything that surrounds the topic of mental health in African-American men. We will be talking not only about the medical aspect of it, but the societal angle of it as well. Tune in as I discuss the reasons why African-American men continue to struggle with mental health and how we as a community could help each other move forward in the positive direction of getting and feeling better. Why you need to check this episode: Find out the roots of why men, particularly from the Black community, continue to struggle with mental health despite the availability of help; Learn the importance of asking and understanding the “why” behind men's actions and/or reactions toward stressors; and Realize the significance of having a proper and reliable support system in dealing with your mental health struggles “You have to acknowledge the elephant in the room. You have to acknowledge that there is a stigma that is attached to mental health and black men that we won't even allow to connect. ”– Dr. Berry Pierre Notable Quotes: “When you have to ask yourself, ‘Why does color matter?', then you already answered the question. Because then, you're saying ‘I don't even recognize that there are structural, access-related, and professional-related differences in the way color affects how I deal with the disease”. – Dr. Berry Pierre “When you're trying to focus on your mental health and you can't find the right people to take care of you, or even if you find someone who's willing to take care of you, and they don't take care of you equally, that is where problems arise”. – Dr. Berry Pierre “You can be financially healthy; you can work on trying to be physically healthy. But if your mental health isn't there, then guess what? It doesn't even matter.” – Dr. Berry Pierre “Because we start young on not letting our emotions come out and not letting ourselves be free with how we feel, we carry our burden to adulthood.” – Dr. Berry Pierre “Don't act like the stigma is not there… We have to attack the stigma because that's how you can move forward and move us in the positive direction to getting and feeling better.” – Dr. Berry Pierre “For a lot of men, their reality is not something that they like. Their reality is not something that they are happy with. Their reality is not something that they are cool with. So guess what? They do the activities that get them away from that reality.” – Dr. Berry Pierre “You should have someone to be able to say ‘I need some help'. Because if you don't, we know that stress has no problem sitting where it's at”. – Dr. Berry Pierre Sign up at www.listentodrberry.com to join the mailing list. In this episode Myrts speaks on how affirmation can be an important tool in your life. He speaks on how someone said Affirmations are no good because you are speaking from a place of lack and they magnify what you aren't. Myrts say it's partially true, because you do begin from a place of lack, but that's why you speak them repeatedly. So that you train your mind and energy to match the frequency of the things that you're asking for. Like he said before, think of a red truck, you're going to see a red truck. He also speaks on how we talk to ourselves on a daily. Most time it's not the best. We can beat ourselves up, so speaking affirmations changes the conversations that you have with yourself. If you're speaking to yourself positively and like you're deserving of what you're asking of, you will feel more confident and better about yourself. He speaks on how as you go through life, your affirmations change. Now he is in a time of his life where he is healing his inner child, so his affirmations has changed to lift up little Myrts. Myrts speaks on how you must do the work as well while speaking affirmations. Faith without work is dead. Hear this and more in the new episode. Situational awareness is keeping your head on a swivel, checking, and assessing your surroundings at all times. You never want to be in a position where your "guard" is let down, making you a "soft target" and not being mentally or physically prepared for a potential attack or encounter. It is important to know the four levels of awareness: UNAWARE AWARE ALERT ALARM Unaware: These are the people who are so distracted, head down and eyes glued to their phones, they walk into poles or fall down steps because they have no idea what is going on around them. Aware: This is the state we need to be in at all times. You are conscious of your surroundings, know who and what is around you, and have your "head in the game." Alert: Now you are in a heightened state of awareness, identifying a potential threat or multiple threats Alarm: At the level of alarm, the potential threat is now a real threat to the intended victim's physical safety. Whatever action you had planned in the alert level - now must be implemented. It is best to avoid, if possible, a potentially violent situation once we become ALERTED. Just as it is important to recognize these four levels of awareness, it is equally as important to TRAIN in these levels. Start visualizing your day, before you even leave your home. Mentally walk through your events and consider alternative options, looking for a secondary exit in a building or restaurant, and how you are going to get from point A to point B. Training through visualization is important to practice every day. Get out of the mindset "IF xxx happens, THEN I will do xxx. Rather, start thinking WHEN xxx happens, THEN I will do xxx. 2 Chicks and a Mic are back in the housssee!!!! This is part 2 of 2 episodes. My gal Salome Valdez and I have a two part episode for you ya and like always, we talk about tools that can help us with our clear awareness regarding our choices in life.Salome brought up a really good topic. It started with a quote that she found on social media that said “My love language is reminding you of your power.” Pretty good quote but it also gives a bit of a seniority vibe. Sometimes when we try to help others we tempt to not be aware of the seniority we show.Helping others can be like a rock in the middle of a stream. The stream flows through and the rock is sitting there… not being bothered. Yes, I know you might be confused! But listen in and laugh with us because not only do we get serious in this episode, we bring up a few “aha” moments that you might relate to. DM me on Instagram with a “
