Way back in the day, when we were just getting going with the podcast, Sam Allberry graciously joined us to talk through James chapter 2. His interview is still one of our favourites, not only because of his biscuit chat, but because he was so enormously helpful in pastorally walking us through one of the trickiest parts of James. It's been a joy to listen in again, and we hope it is for you too!Sam is a pastor, apologist, author and speaker. He is the author of a number of books, including James for You, which is mentioned in this episode, available here. This episode is sponsored by The Good Book Company. Sam Allberry | Genesis 1:1-25 | April 27, 2025
In this episode, Dave and Ann Wilson talk with Sam Allberry to discuss a key aspect of identity and self-worth, focusing on how our understanding of being ""in Christ"" reshapes how we view ourselves and others. The conversation starts with a personal reflection on social anxiety and the desire to impress others in social situations. The hosts share their experiences of walking into rooms of strangers and feeling the need to prove themselves. There's a candid exploration of the insecurities many people face, especially when dealing with social situations and a lack of self-confidence.Sam Allberry shares his journey of shifting from a mindset focused on impressing others to understanding who he is ""in Christ."" Anne Wilson echoes this sentiment, highlighting how one's identity in Christ offers freedom from the need to seek validation from others. The conversation moves into the idea of being ""self-forgetting"" rather than self-absorbed, with a significant mention of Ray Ortlund's advice: ""There you are"" as a mindset to adopt when entering a room, instead of ""Here I am.""The conversation dives into the role of identity in relationships, especially marriage and family life. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing our union with Christ and with others who share that union, which impacts how we relate to both fellow Christians and people who may not yet know Christ. The hosts discuss the significance of church fellowship, pointing out that, even in difficult times or personal struggles, the church community is vital for spiritual growth and encouragement. The guests reflect on how understanding and believing in who we are in Christ helps us navigate our relationships, particularly in healing broken relationships or experiencing spiritual abuse. A moving moment occurs when the hosts talk about a woman who gradually learned to trust again through the support of close friends and church members, showing the slow yet steady process of healing and growth. In the final moments, the hosts emphasize that transformation in Christ takes time and requires the support of a Christian community. The conversation concludes with a reminder that ""being in Christ"" means not just a vertical relationship with God but a horizontal relationship with others who are also ""in Christ."" This mutual connection is foundational to the Christian faith, underscoring the importance of fellowship and encouragement within the body of Christ. In this episode of Family Life Today, hosts Dave and Ann Wilson engage with Sam Allberry, a renowned speaker and author, exploring the profound theme of identity in Christ. The episode kicks off with a light-hearted banter about accents, showcasing a playful dynamic among the guests. The conversation quickly transitions into a deep theological inquiry: what is more crucial—what one believes about God or what one believes about themselves? Both Allberry and the hosts affirm that understanding God is paramount to understanding oneself.Allberry elaborates on his insights from his book ""One With My Lord,"" emphasizing the biblical concept of being ""in Christ."" He explains that the New Testament predominantly uses this language to articulate a believer's relationship with Jesus, which transcends the idea of merely following Him. Being ""in Christ"" signifies a profound spiritual union that defines a believer's identity and shapes their understanding of the Christian life.Throughout the discussion, Allberry draws parallels between theological understanding and everyday experiences, likening the awakening of this spiritual identity to the realization of needing glasses to see clearly. He emphasizes that the concept of union with Christ clarifies many aspects of the Christian faith, providing a lens through which believers can view their lives and struggles.Key points include the significance of understanding our union with Christ in relation to sin, holiness, and identity. Allberry challenges the notion that holiness is an alien concept to believers, suggesting instead that living in accordance with one's identity in Christ feels natural and fulfilling. He posits that true transformation and growth come from recognizing one's new identity rather than adhering to a distant standard of behavior. The episode also touches on the challenges of sin and the internal struggles faced by believers, illustrating that feeling tempted does not define one's identity but rather highlights the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit. Allberry encourages listeners to affirm their identity in Christ, suggesting that a deep understanding of this truth can lead to a more vibrant and authentic Christian life. The focus of this podcast episode is the exploration of the myths surrounding singleness, as articulated by our esteemed guest, Sam Alberry, in relation to his enlightening book, "Seven Myths of Singleness." We engage in a profound discourse that seeks to dismantle the prevalent misconceptions regarding the nature of intimacy and the societal perceptions of singlehood. Throughout our conversation, we explore the notion that singleness is not a mere precursor to marriage, nor is it synonymous with loneliness; rather, it is a state of being that can encompass rich, meaningful relationships and spiritual fulfillment. Alberry offers invaluable insights into the significance of fostering deep, non-romantic connections, emphasizing that true intimacy transcends sexual relationships, fostering a holistic understanding of companionship. This episode serves as a clarion call for both single individuals and those in marital unions to reevaluate their perceptions of intimacy, community, and the inherent value that singleness can embody in our lives.Takeaways:The podcast emphasizes the importance of understanding singleness as a positive state rather than merely a lack of marriage, which is often misconstrued in societal narratives. Sam Alberry articulates that true intimacy can exist outside of romantic relationships, advocating for the recognition of deep friendships and community bonds. A significant discussion is presented regarding the misconceptions surrounding the 'gift of singleness' and the need to view both singleness and marriage as gifts from God. Listeners are encouraged to engage in meaningful friendships that foster mutual support and understanding, breaking the asymmetry often seen in relationships between singles and married individuals. The episode highlights Paul's role as a spiritual father, illustrating how single individuals can still fulfill parental roles through mentorship and spiritual guidance within their communities. A crucial takeaway is the emphasis on finding contentment not in marital status but in one's relationship with Jesus, which transcends the challenges faced in both singleness and marriage.

Scripture: Genesis 1:26-31 Key Takeaways: + God made us male and female to bear his image - Matthew 19:3-6 + Our bodies are a good gift from God and tell us who we are “This is hugely important. If the body is merely a vehicle or a costume for the real you, then it is the equivalent of property. But we know this can't really be the case. However much we might privilege the mind or soul over the body as the ‘real' us, we know deep down that the body is an essential part of who we truly are. When people hurt your body, you know that they have not just damaged some of your property; they have violated you. What you do to someone's body, you do to a person… We cannot escape our embodied-ness. Alastair Roberts sums it up neatly: ‘The body isn't just something that clothes the self but is itself the self.” – Sam Allberry. What God has to say about our Bodies. + Some people feel an incongruence between their biological sex and their internal sense of self “In many Western countries, we've seen a massive spike in teenagers questioning their gender. For instance, the Tavistock Centre in London, the main gender clinic in the United Kingdom, treated 51 (34 males, 17 females) children and teenagers in 2009 who had gender dysphoria or were identifying as trans*. In 2016, the same clinic saw 1,766 (557 males, 1,209 females) children and teenagers, and in 2019 it saw 2,364 (624 males, 1,740 females). That's more than 5000% increase among females in 10 years. Researchers have documented similar upsurges, among biological females in particular, in many Western countries: Sweden, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States.” – Preston Sprinkle. Embodied: Transgender Identities, the Church, and What the Bible Has to Say. + Our hope is in transformation not transition “Christian discipleship is oriented toward living out the divine image that God created us to be. Sexed bodies are part of that image. Ontologically then, transitioning would be moving us further away from who we are, not bringing us closer to it.” – Preston Sprinkle. Embodied: Transgender Identities, the Church, and What the Bible Has to Say. - Romans 12:1-2 - 2 Corinthians 5:17 + See people as image bearers that are to be loved, protected, and cared for + Develop convictions not just gut reactions + Parents, own and exercise your authority compassionately + Seek to be a welcoming community that listens, learns, loves, and shares the truths with compassion and patience

Gospel Sanity in a World Gone Mad – This is what Ray Ortlund Jr. aims to offer to the next generation of pastors and leaders. In this conversation with Mike, he discusses the profound value of remembering his own mortality, the importance of gathering and "gospelling" young men, and the encouragement that Christ Himself is preaching through us as we exposit the Word. Ray also shares insights from his latest book, co-authored with Sam Allberry, You're Not Crazy - Gospel Sanity for Weary Churches. In this practical guide, seasoned pastors Ray Ortlund and Sam Allberry help weary leaders renew their love for ministry by equipping them to build a gospel-centered culture into every aspect of their churches. They emphasize that while healthy doctrine is crucial, failing to nurture a healthy culture can lead to frustration, division, and even unbiblical practices. The book provides Scripture-focused advice on honesty, honour, preaching, leadership, and mission, helping leaders regain a beautiful, Christ-centered vision for their ministries. This episode, originally released earlier this year, was the most downloaded episode of 2024. We're re-releasing it this December to celebrate its impact and ensure even more people benefit from Ray's wisdom and encouragement. “ Two of the devil's biggest lies are ‘You're the only one who struggles with this kind of stuff' and ‘You can't tell anyone.' Sin thrives in that kind of dark secrecy.” So says author and apologist Sam Allberry during this conversation with Russell Moore. The two discuss Allberry's new book, One with My Lord, and consider various ways people interpret the Bible's perspective on sexuality. They talk about gender identity, marriage, and what it means when God says it is not good for humans to be alone. Allberry and Moore consider the importance of friendship, the value of community, and the impact of social media on mental health. They also discuss Allberry's experience with Ravi Zacharias International Ministries (RZIM), the Billy Graham rule, and fostering organizational cultures of transparency. Sam Allberry was involved in environmental activism when he became a Christian - a development that his activist friends saw as bad news. After all, why would a follower of a religion that looks forward to the coming of a new Earth be concerned with the state of the current world? For Sam though, becoming a Christian led him to a very different conclusion.
