New year, new episode! After a brief pause, we are excited to be back to share with you more about the amazing initiatives happening around the world and major concepts within the field of global surgery. The episode today is focused on a topic relevant to every listener because we all have one - mothers! Women's health is at the very core of medicine with the unique overlap of the creation of life with also the prevention of death. Our guest host specializes in several unique aspects of this cornerstone of healthcare, namely support for access and dissemination of contraceptive postpartum (the PPIUD project) as well as advocacy and education about the practice and effects of female genital mutilation or cutting (FGM/C). Working to create safe, culturally competent change around this practice is extremely charged - politically, culturally, and even religiously. With more than 200 million women subjected to FGM/C worldwide, there is a great need for education on harm reduction, teaching about women's health/menstrual health, and so much more. Join us as we speak with Dr Anita Makins about advocacy at all levels with bidirectional teaching and education for the prevention of harm.

We interview Nicholas Makins on his recent publication "Attitudinal Ambivalence: Moral Uncertainty for Non-Cognitivists". In this paper, Makins adopts a non-cognivist account of moral judgements, characterized not as beliefs but as cognitive attitudes, like desires or forms of will. The aim of the article is to show that this view can be better defended if one defines moral doubt not in terms of credential uncertainty (viz., lack of information) but as ambivalence – i.e., a situation where two conflicting desires clash with each other. The fascinating proposal is illustrated via some examples through the podcast conversation, which opens insightful reflection about the nature of moral attitudes and the strategy one should adopt in cases of moral doubt. You can read the paper here https://doi.org/10.1080/00048402.2021.1908380

It's a duo of evil duos! We compare Ian Brady and Myra Hindley - who (among other things) murdered children in 1960's Manchester - to John and Sarah Makin, who murdered up to 13 babies in late 1800's Sydney. Includes a Lesser of Two Evils! Trigger warning: There's quite a bit about rape and several dead babies, sorry. If you get this on an RSS feed, you will have to visit our site to watch this week's video- Join us as we discuss our experience at the CHA show (Craft & Hobbies Association) in Chicago last weekend. It was great fun. We met a few polymer clay artists as well as representatives of the three polymer clay suppliers- Amaco, Polyform, and Makins. We did video interviews with Lynne, Tommie, and Cat which will air next Friday, and filmed Amaco’s Bottle of Hope awards. You can watch part 1 today, and part 2, as well as the interviews, will air next week. We saw Polyform’s new product, Studio by Sculpey, and got a few samples to share with you. We also talked to Donna Dewberry about the upcoming release of Studio clay in December, as well as the Home Décor projects she has planned. Some of the things displayed in the booth included wall mirrors, vases, candlesticks, votive holders, and garden tables. The clay was used sculpturally to make floral and leaf designs, as well as made to look like faux tiles. It was interesting and we will share more about this new clay as Polyform gives us the info. It was so much fun to visit the show as Press. We were treated really well by CHA, the Press has a quiet room away from the hustle where we could have a hot drink or get cold water, sit for a minute, and conduct our interviews. This is also where we picked up catalogs and samples left by companies that wanted to get the word out about their new products. Definitely visit a CHA show if you get the chance! We also picked up some great product samples to review and try, and some to give away. Coming soon to our shop- a prize gallery, where if you win a monthly giveaway, you can pick your prize! Here are some links to things we talked about today- www.studiobysculpey.com (nothing there yet but stay tuned) www.makinsclay.com (air dry polymer clay…and wonderful tools) www.amaco.com (check out the Bottles of Hope auction!) www.riverpoetdesign.com (Lynne Ann Schwarzenberg- check out her classes) www.catherienarts.com (Cat- check out her free video demos on Monday nights) www.pcagoe.com – vote on your favorite representation of “Summer memories‿ to win a prize! Don’t forget to leave us comments on our site in order to be entered to win one of our Studio by Sculpey clay samples. Also please consider writing us a review wherever you download your podcast- itunes, meefedia, yahoo, google, odeo….reviews help our rankings, so we thank you for taking the time!
