My guest on Episode 213 of The Brooklyn Blast Furnace is a "Neighborhood guy". With roots in Brooklyn and residing in Long Island, Mark Menghi has done and continues to do amazing things. From being a regular at L'Amour to playing in local bands in venues all over New York City. He became friendly with members of legendary metal bands. He founded and put together "Metal Allegiance" with him, Dave Ellefson of "Megadeth", Mike Portnoy of "Dream Theater" and a ton of other bands and Alex Skolnick of "Testament". The even cooler thing is that they rotate guest singers and musicians. There's been appearances by Phil Anselmo, Gary Holt, Zetro, Andreas Kisser, Charlie Benante, Geezer Butler, Mark Osegueda and a ton of others. Way too many to name. He also played bass on the "BPMD" project with Bobby Blitz, Phil Demmel and Mike Portnoy as well. Super interesting guy. Much respect. Enjoy.
Mark Menghi is the founder of the heavy metal supergroup, Metal Allegiance, featuring Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Alex Skolnik (Testament), David Ellefson (Megadeth). The band also has a rotating cast of legends and who's who in Metal. Joe talks about the beginnings of that group and also about how Mark and Joe became friends many moons ago.
With 2020 behind us, let's take a listen to a few interviews from Talk Toomey. "It has its challenges, I'll tell you that!" laughed Mark Menghi, one of four core members of all-star heavy band Metal Allegiance, when pressed on the difficulties of writing music for a band with no set frontman. "Again, it comes down to - at least for me anyway - one of the hardest parts and probably the most satisfying part at the same time, is having that ability to write lyrics for completely different singers. Say, someone like Bobby Blitz versus Troy Sanders, you couldn't get any more different vocally than those two guys and it's trying to get the correct words and phrasing that's gonna fit their vocal capabilities. It's definitely tricky, and when you perform live it's awesome because you have a whole all-star cast of characters up there but yet the music is the same and the message is different yet vastly similar so it is tricky but also pretty awesome when we complete it and we get to line up all these different singers on stage. We're a band that has a million different singers so instead of one lead singer syndrome we have about thirty (laughs)."In the full interview Mark outlines how the creative process differs writing for different vocalists, the different things he gets musically out of working with some of the best in the business, the process of selecting vocalists, which artist he fanboyed over, how they kept so many egos's in check, who he wants to work with on future albums, the possibility of an Australian tour and an in-depth analysis on each member of Metal Allegiance and what they bring to the table.
Steve Cooper talks with bassist David Ellefson. David is best known as the second-longest serving member of the American thrash metal band Megadeth from 1983 to 2002 and again from 2010. As a member of Megadeth he has been awarded 10 Grammy nominations, countless gold & platinum records and toured the world for the better part of 3 decades. In addition he has lent his playing and writing abilities to several other recording and touring projects including Soulfly, F5, Temple of Brutality, Altitudes and Attitude (With Frank Bello of Anthrax) and Metal Allegiance, the supergroup formed by Mark Menghi with Mike Portnoy, and Alex Skolnick who released their eponymous debut in 2015 on Nuclear Blast. He has also ventured out into other related forays, as president of record label EMP Label Group and with his own coffee brand Ellefson Coffee Co.
