This week on Toilet Radio: Joe and Jordan talk about the Kafka-esque nightmare of modern life. Also, Michale Graves, not content with getting his shows cancelled in DFW strip malls, is now having his shows cancelled in the UK. William Shatner, at 94 years old, is threatening to release a metal album. Dire stuff. But fortunately, Gen X Correspondent Ian talks with Testament's Chuck Billy about the band's upcoming Thrash of the Titans tour, playing with Judas Priest in 1990 when Dave Mustaine tried to quash their pyrotechnic displays, handling vocal effects in a live setting, working with Johnny Z at Megaforce, writing ballads, and dreams of becoming an architect. When Testament finished touring behind their debut album The Legacy, they had zero songs written for a follow-up. The label didn't care—they demanded another record immediately. Scrambling to fulfill their contract's 40-minute minimum, the Bay Area thrash band wrote The New Order in the studio, added an Aerosmith cover, tossed in some classical-influenced instrumentals, and somehow delivered one of 1988's most essential thrash metal albums. In this episode of Dig Me Out 80s Metal, hosts Jason Ziak, Tim Minneci, and Chip Midnight explore how Testament turned deadline panic into precision thrash. They break down Alex Skolnick's astonishing guitar work (recorded when he was just 19 years old), Chuck Billy's evolving vocal style, the power grooves that made Testament stand apart from their thrash peers, and why this album should've earned them a spot in the “Big Five” of thrash metal alongside Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. If you love Metallica, Anthrax, Overkill, or Bay Area thrash metal, this episode unpacks why The New Order remains a thrash clinic 37 years later.Episode Highlights:0:00 – Introduction to 80s Metal poll results and Testament's victory over Motörhead, Anthrax, and Blackfoot1:03 – Band history: Testament's origins as Legacy, their Bay Area roots, and the contract crisis that shaped The New Order3:47 – What works: Alex Skolnick's classical-influenced precision playing at age 19, the power grooves, and the locked-in rhythm section8:12 – “Into the Pit” – Why Testament's most-played live song became a thrash anthem (even though it's not about moshing)12:20 – “Disciples of the Watch” – Breaking down one of the album's heaviest tracks and Skolnick's sweeping guitar mastery15:04 – The Aerosmith cover: How “Nobody's Fault” became an unexpected highlight and showcased Testament's versatility18:29 – The instrumentals: “Hypnosis” and “The Dirge” as atmospheric breathers that elevate the album's pacing21:44 – “Trial by Fire” – The single that featured on MTV's Headbangers Ball and showcased Testament's unique arrangements24:03 – What doesn't work: Chuck Billy's Metallica-influenced vocals and missed melodic opportunities29:59 – Original vs. remastered versions: Why the remaster brings the bass and drums forward for a fuller sound34:47 – Worthy Album ratings across the board and why this is Testament's quintessential record40:05 – Testament's evolution from The New Order to their heavier modern sound on 2025's ParabellumSubscribe to Dig Me Out for weekly deep dives into 70s rock, 80s metal, 90s alternative, and 2000s rock. Preparing For War With CHUCK BILLY From TESTAMENT

HEAVY Music Interviews

It is refreshing to hear old school metal bands still pushing their limits and exploring fresh sonic realms, even with a sound that is known and loved and has been for more than 40 years. It is understandable when some bands mutter the words 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it', but that still shouldn't stop the creative juices from flowing, if only to challenge yourself.Which is exactly what happened with thrash metal legends Testament and their upcoming album, Para Bellum. While not detouring too far from the music for which they are universally loved and respected, Testament have found ways to reinvigorate their tried and true sound without risking the alienation of staunch, loyal fans.On this album, Testament have leaned more into the black metal side of their musical psyche, a side embraced by guitarist Eric Peterson, who tapped into the more modern aspects of metal with drummer Chris Dovas, who was working on his first album with the band. Noticeably younger than his bandmates, Dovas brought the taste of the present into Testament's creativity, with the results only solidifying the band's sound.Such is the all-encompassing sound Testament were going for with Para Bellum, the opening notes feature an old bridge thought lost from The Legacy era of the band, coming full circle in a way while still embracing change. Para Bellum is triumphant on so many levels, maybe none more so than the addition of the song Meant To Be, which is Testament's first album ballad for many years. It is exciting times for a band just about to release their 14th studio album, with frontman Chuck Billy joining HEAVY to bring us up to speed. We ask about the album title, Para Bellum - which is Latin for If You Want Peace, Prepare For War, and how it fits in with the content."First of all, it fit in with the artwork," Billy explained. "Originally we were gonna call it Infanticide AI, but that didn't really match the direction. We thought, AI, let's not go there, because maybe fans might start thinking, 'is that album cover AI? Did they use AI to write lyrics in all this?'So we said, you know what? Let's not open that door. And once me and Alex wrote Parra Bellum, and I told him what it meant, it made more sense with what he was working on with the artwork, because we knew we wanted a mushroom cloud there in the background. And I didn't know about the angel and the missile wings, but once they came up with it, it just made sense. It's subliminally war-driven a little bit, talking about silent weapons and things that are going on in our world."In the full interview, Chuck spoke more about the musical nature of Para Bellum and what they were going for this time around, the elements of black metal through most of the music and how it enhances the band's sound, the contributions of new drummer Chris Dovas in the writing and recording process and what ideas he brought to the table. We spoke about bringing a slightly modern edge to their existing sound of the importance of always trying to come up with fresh ideas, the album ballad and why now is the right time to write another one after so many years, the use of cello for that sound and how difficult it was to integrate it into their music, the meaning behind the album artwork and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Daarnaast is Master Killer de intro van onze podcast Tales From The Eastside. Zo verbinden we mensen. 2. Testament – More Than Meets The Eye (The Formation of Damnation, 2008) Er bestaat een stereotiep beeld van liefhebbers van metal, punk en hardcore. 3. Dus hij maakt de titel ‘Live For This' zeker waar. 4. No Guts No Glory benefietcover (2021) Ik wil Stichting No Guts No Glory graag onder de aandacht brengen. 5. 6. Zwaar Aanbevolen Boundaries - Turning Hate Into Rage (Death is little more, 2024) “Metal Business Club?

In the mid 80's, the Bay Area Thrash was taking off thanks to the likes of Exodus and Metallica. One band in particular, Legacy, which formed in 1983, would go on to sign a record deal, change singers, change their name and go onto become one of the most influential Bay Area Thrash bands.  That band is Testament.  In 1986, original vocalist Steve Souza left to join Exodus as a replacement for the fired Paul Baloff.  At Souza's suggestion, Testament hired Chuck Billy as their new singer. With their lineup set, Testament would sign with Megaforce Records and release their debut album The Legacy in 1987. Since that time, Testament have released 13 studio albums, 4 live albums, 2 Eps and 5 compilations.  On this episode, Chris and Kenneth Dean will choose 15 songs each from their 13 studio albums. Any songs duplicated automatically make the list. Whichever songs are not, they'll debate to see which make the final cut. Then they'll arrange them in concert setlist order for the Ultimate Testament Greatest Hits. “That's something you could remember to forget later…” One of the most profound things about heavy metal is its natural evolution over time. It's never forced and somehow everything just flows together with perfection, like some intelligently designed, supernaturally endowed, cosmic jigsaw puzzle.    Similar to the way Pantera picked up the baton for metal in the early 1990's, LAMB OF GOD became the new “stop gap” for metal fans and the evolutionary “next wave” of extreme metal (a.k.a. the New Wave of American Heavy Metal (NWOAHM)) with their own unique brand of sonic vengeance containing the perfect blend of blistering speed, scalpel-like precision, and devastating ferocity.   It's time everyone understands the vast differences between “bukkake and bulgogi” while discovering the “six scientific reasons” highlighting the “terrifying” similarities between elasmobranchology & gynecology. Never underestimate the persuasive appeal of the perfect “LinkedIn profile”, don't deny the power of “The Triangle”, and JOIN US as we go INSIDE THE METAL with one of the most brutally heavy bands ever to emerge from the Commonwealth of Virginia as we celebrate Richmond's own LAMB OF GOD.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, Google Podcasts or wherever you get your Podcasts. This week we look to the stars for inspiration for our show theme. Oh yeah! We are talking about bands that have rock stars in them: Supergroups and Offshoots. A band consisting of well-known artists from other bands does not always equal great success. We dive into some of the more obscure supergroups and offshoots that didn't break with huge mainstream success or stay around very long. What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we talk exclusively about Supergroups featuring famous solo artists and band members along with, Offshoots which are bands who contain the bulk of a previous incarnation of a famous band. In our final week of Gothtober, your fiendish-yet-friendly ghouls bring you an episode all about bands playing other bands' songs! These happen to be familiar songs that you hear at every HALLOWEEN party this time of year! Most of these are in the mainstream pop world… scary!!! However, what vile and twisted interpretations can be made by our rock n' punk n' metal ambassadors??? Listen if you dare…What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing.Songs this week include:Pulley – “Grim Grinning Ghosts (Disney's Haunted Mansion)” from Punk Rock Halloween, Vol. 2: Louder, Faster & Scarier(2019)Doctor Smoke – “Trick Or Treat (Fastway)” from Trick Or Treat - Single (2021) Punchline – “Ghostbusters (Ray Parker Jr.)” from Punk Rock Halloween, Vol. 2: Louder, Faster & Scarier(2019)Strung Out – “Bark At The Moon (Ozzy Osbourne)” from Punk Goes Metal (2000)Linger – “Zombie (The Cranberries)” from Linger EP (2005)Tsunami Bomb – “Dead Man's Party (Oingo Boingo)” fromPunk Rock Halloween, Vol. 2: Louder, Faster & Scarier(2019)Chuck Billy – “Thriller (Michael Jackson)” from Metal Thriller (2013)Dash Rip Rock – “Man Of Constant Sorrow (The Soggy Bottom Boys)” from Hee Haw Hell (2007)Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

There's no denying that the drummer in a band can radically impact (good or bad) the overall dimension, weight, and power of a band's sonic palette. And when that drummer is DAVE LOMBARDO, and that band is TESTAMENT, and those two forces join together, it results in the most dynamically brutal album of their entire catalog.  Testament's 1999 opus, THE GATHERING, is the first and only album (thus far) to feature Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Grip Inc.) behind the drums. Now that Dave is officially back in Testament again, we can reflect on this thrash masterpiece and begin to genuinely appreciate (and anticipate) the crushing level of awesome that the next Testament album will possess. You'll want to have “King Krug” help with the uncorking (“remember when we used to gulp?”) before you get your boots and spurs ready for “riding the slug” (hey, there's a first time for everything…*gulp*) and find out “The New Core” that's been officially sanctioned for this episode by none other than “Elvis Anselmo” as you JOIN US for a dive into the brutally glorious, sonic ecstasy that is Testament's eighth studio album, “THE GATHERING”. The Pipeman interviews Chuck Billy of Testament. They are going on tour with Exodus and Death Angel. During covid they had to put the touring on the back burner and continue after covid ended. In early in his career he wrote about climate change, end of the world and war. Having to live through it and to see it happen again in today's age it seems unreal. They've had so many great drummers, but Dave Lombardo has a unique style for thrash metal. They have an album that came out in 2020. This will be the first album with Dave as a drummer. The Gathering record with Dave was a testament to what is to come. They started tuning the guitars more, adding black metal in the music to help aid Chucks voice. Normally they would program drums then give it to the drummer to make it his own. With the Gathering record they just jammed with no demo and created it. They haven't been home for 2 years consistently in the entire career due to covid. Chuck has a vape called Chiefs. They have a new generation of them coming out. Lordvapor.com you can get them. They are looking to do edibles. You can connect to the band on all social media platforms and stream on all major platforms.
