“How many people do you think go into a bar and say: ‘I'd like an Everclear on the rocks, please…'?”   Looking back, 1997 seems utterly surreal…   To put things in perspective, 1997 marked the debut of South Park on Comedy Central, the release of Radiohead's breakthrough, third album, OK Computer, the beginning of the final season of Seinfeld, and (of course) the arrival of Metallica's conclusion to The Loads with Reload.   Perhaps one of the most surreal (and tragic) parts of 1997 was the time a bunch of children in a band called Hanson went viral with a song called MMMBop while a lesser known, criminally underrated, and FAR SUPERIOR band (with an extremely similar sounding name, consisting of former members of Helmet & Quicksand) called Handsome released their one (and only) album, Handsome, earlier that same year.     Sometimes life is just too weird and utterly unfair…   It's time to discover the power of “a better magical piece of paper” that is not a college degree and understand that whenever someone uses the term ‘dating' that “we know exactly what they're talking about”.    Find out who “stayed metal the whole time”, who was “chuggin' the D”, and who wasn't going to metal shows “unless it was Metallica” when you JOIN US as we go back in time almost 30 years with THE CLASS OF 1997. You're just gonna go free ball it…”   1989 was the very first year EVER that The Recording Academy recognized hard rock and metal music with the “Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental”. And other than the completely insulting “slap in the face” by The Recording Academy to Metallica (think Will Smith & Chris Rock, but even more childish, petty, and completely unnecessary), there were no other Big Four albums or happenings in 1989.   (SIDEBAR: Y'know, maybe it's just speculation, conspiracy theory, or just good old-fashioned karma in action, but the way Metallica “lost” that Grammy, it's like they were literally “deleted from the mix” of nominees, so to speak. Not unlike a certain bass player from a certain mix on a certain album. Moving on…)   “Just gonna raw dog it…”   As we are all aware, metal (especially thrash) is far more than just The Big Four, and 1989 was actually quite an excellent year for metal. It is refreshing to hear old school metal bands still pushing their limits and exploring fresh sonic realms, even with a sound that is known and loved and has been for more than 40 years. It is understandable when some bands mutter the words 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it', but that still shouldn't stop the creative juices from flowing, if only to challenge yourself.Which is exactly what happened with thrash metal legends Testament and their upcoming album, Para Bellum. While not detouring too far from the music for which they are universally loved and respected, Testament have found ways to reinvigorate their tried and true sound without risking the alienation of staunch, loyal fans.On this album, Testament have leaned more into the black metal side of their musical psyche, a side embraced by guitarist Eric Peterson, who tapped into the more modern aspects of metal with drummer Chris Dovas, who was working on his first album with the band. Noticeably younger than his bandmates, Dovas brought the taste of the present into Testament's creativity, with the results only solidifying the band's sound.Such is the all-encompassing sound Testament were going for with Para Bellum, the opening notes feature an old bridge thought lost from The Legacy era of the band, coming full circle in a way while still embracing change. Para Bellum is triumphant on so many levels, maybe none more so than the addition of the song Meant To Be, which is Testament's first album ballad for many years. It is exciting times for a band just about to release their 14th studio album, with frontman Chuck Billy joining HEAVY to bring us up to speed.We ask about the album title, Para Bellum - which is Latin for If You Want Peace, Prepare For War, and how it fits in with the content."First of all, it fit in with the artwork," Billy explained. "Originally we were gonna call it Infanticide AI, but that didn't really match the direction. We thought, AI, let's not go there, because maybe fans might start thinking, 'is that album cover AI? Did they use AI to write lyrics in all this?'So we said, you know what? Let's not open that door. And once me and Alex wrote Parra Bellum, and I told him what it meant, it made more sense with what he was working on with the artwork, because we knew we wanted a mushroom cloud there in the background. And I didn't know about the angel and the missile wings, but once they came up with it, it just made sense. Red and Jerry talk with Testament vocalist Chuck Billy about their show at Milwaukee Metal Fest. We had technical difficulties so the interview is shorter than usual .

In the mid 80's, the Bay Area Thrash was taking off thanks to the likes of Exodus and Metallica. One band in particular, Legacy, which formed in 1983, would go on to sign a record deal, change singers, change their name and go onto become one of the most influential Bay Area Thrash bands.  That band is Testament.  In 1986, original vocalist Steve Souza left to join Exodus as a replacement for the fired Paul Baloff.  At Souza's suggestion, Testament hired Chuck Billy as their new singer. With their lineup set, Testament would sign with Megaforce Records and release their debut album The Legacy in 1987. Since that time, Testament have released 13 studio albums, 4 live albums, 2 Eps and 5 compilations.  On this episode, Chris and Kenneth Dean will choose 15 songs each from their 13 studio albums. Any songs duplicated automatically make the list. Whichever songs are not, they'll debate to see which make the final cut. Then they'll arrange them in concert setlist order for the Ultimate Testament Greatest Hits.
