CARBON BLACK's Ten-Year Journey: A Groove Metal Revival With JON HURLEY

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 9, 2024 19:32

Interview by Angela CroudaceFor over a decade Carbon Black have been steadily making their mark in the Australian groove metal scene. With a reputation for hard-hitting, groove-laden riffs and an undeniable stage presence, the Wollongong-based band has persevered through line-up changes, tough times, and the ever-evolving music industry.Lead vocalist Jon Hurley reflects on the band's journey, their upcoming re-release of the EP Principium 2.0, and recent collaborations with some of metal's heavyweights, including Tim 'Ripper' Owens of Judas Priest."We've been going for a little over 10 years now," Hurley says, a mix of disbelief and pride in his voice. "It's funny to look back and think about how we started, and everything we've done to get to this point."The band's latest release, Principium 2.0, is a refreshed and revitalised version of their original EP. Hurley and the band saw it as the perfect opportunity to revisit the early material that helped put them on the map. "When we first started, we didn't have many songs, and we definitely didn't have a stable line-up," he explains. "We rushed things out—wrote 40 minutes of material in a matter of weeks. And while we were proud of what we did, we knew that there was more we could bring to the table."The stable line-up that has been integral to the band's recent successes consists of Hurley (vocals), Rob Giles (bass), Damon Bishop (guitar), and Steve Giles (drums), who joined six years ago. This line-up shift, notably the addition of Steve, was a game-changer for the band. "It took us a while to find a stable drummer," Hurley admits. "But now, with Steve, we've been able to really inject some personality into our old tracks and make them something special."The refreshed Principium marks a musical evolution for Carbon Black and celebrates their perseverance as a band. "It's a celebration of 10 years of hard work," Hurley says. "We've been through a lot, and we're still standing strong. This is just the beginning for us."Alongside the re-release of Principium, Carbon Black has also gained recognition for its collaboration with Tim "Ripper" Owens. The band teamed up with the former Judas Priest and Iced Earth vocalist for a guest feature on one of their tracks, Under Order, during the pandemic. "It was a stroke of luck," Hurley explains. "We were trying to figure out how to make a splash with our new album, and Rob came across the opportunity to work with Ripper. It felt like the perfect fit."Owens' contribution to the track added a new dynamic to the band's sound, blending their groove metal roots with his renowned vocal power. "He was incredibly professional," Hurley recalls. "He sent us three different takes, and we ended up picking the one that felt the most natural. It worked out perfectly."Looking back on the band's rise, Hurley notes that their growth has come with challenges. "In the Australian music scene, especially in heavy metal, there are thousands of bands fighting for attention," he says. "But we've managed to stay relevant because of our hard work, stage presence, and the connections we've made along the way. We're lucky, but we're also really driven."As the band prepares to hit the road once again, Hurley is excited to bring the new material to fans. "We're definitely planning to perform Principium in full on tour, along with some older tracks," he shares. "It's going to be a celebration of everything we've done, and we can't wait to see our fans again."For fans looking to get their hands on the physical release of Principium 2.0, Hurley recommends checking out their Bandcamp page. "We always have limited edition merch and hard copies available at shows," he says. "We've got everything from T-shirts to coasters, and even undies. It's all about giving our fans something special."Reflecting on Carbon Black's journey, Hurley sums it up with a mixture of gratitude and determination. "What does Carbon Black mean to me? It's everything. It's a way of life. It's a family, and it's the best thing I've ever been a part of. We've worked hard, and we're not stopping anytime soon."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

ESP was founded in 2015 by Timothy Moss. The band's concept and music was inspired by Timothy's  travels in the Middle East and events in the US.  The band's first release, “Call To Arms” was produced by Wyn Davis at Total Access Recording Studios in Redondo Beach, CA . The release on Starwest Entertainment Records was well received and garnered industry interest. After the pandemic it was decided to reconfigure the band with top industry talent for the next release.  With help from Wyn Davis and Steve Ornest, Tim “Ripper” Owens (vocals formerly with Judas Priest), Vinny Appice (drums formerly with  Axis, Dio, and Black Sabbath) and Jo Jo Brown (guitars)  joined Timothy in California to record “Digital Soldiers”.  The songs written by Timothy Moss and Jo Jo Brown were greatly enhanced  with the addition of Ripper and Vinny.  Their professionalism helped take the band to the new level the group was seeking. After the release of  “Digital Soldiers”  a new touring line up was needed.  Sean Salinas, a multi-product endorsed artist (Promark Drumsticks, Evans Drumheads, and Diril Cymbals) and former drummer for two productions with Cirque du Soleil (KA and Zumanity) joined the group.  The combination of Sean's incredible drumming  with Timothy's bass playing provided the solid foundation.  Jo Jo Brown's unique signature playing and writing style was a catalyst and perfect fit for the band.  Kris Keyes, formerly with Gargantua Soul and Dive Bomber, joined as lead singer.  Kris has appeared with his band on the Rage Against the Machine tour and performed at Woodstock 1999 .   At different times these artists have appeared on shows with Korn, Megadeath, and Stone Temple Pilots, to name a few. We discuss the five year break between records for Exmortus, fighting the depression of being unable to perform shows during the pandemic, finding the new inspiration through that break, being a guitar teacher and the age that he thinks is best to learn the craft, the time needed to be able to play video games, and our thoughts on potential shoe deals for heavy metal bands. Petar and Jozalyn discuss Tim “Ripper” Owens being surprised he wasn't asked to be at the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of fame induction of Judas Priest and David Draiman wanting to collaborate with Taylor Swift. In this episode of the Rock and Metal Profs, Court and Matt take a laser-focused look at Priest's return to metal form with "Painkiller", vocalist Rob Halford leaving the band, forming "FIGHT" and coming out as a gay man, and bandmates K.K., Glen, Ian and Scott soldiering on with Tim "Ripper" Owens as front man.  The Ripper years were a difficult time for Priest (just as the nineties were a difficult time for metal bands in general).  Ultimately, Halford returned to the fold, and Priest went on to make some of their best music in the 2000s, including their first true concept album.  This 3rd and final episode on Judas Priest is a celebration of the Metal Gods!  You Got Another Thing Comin'!

In this special episode, Mac & C.J. go in-depth on the incredible story of Lewis & Clark and their Corps of Discovery expedition to explore the American West at the direction of Thomas Jefferson. Of course, the story itself is one big tale of badassery, but Mac & C. J. make it more badass with a contemporary analysis that includes Mac's insights from the perspective of an elite modern commando. Episode 10: Question & Answers 1. What are your thoughts on Judas Priest with Tim Ripper Owens? 2. I wanted to see if Pat could share some inside on how to better prepare for a midnight intruder. You've been asleep for four hours next thing you're alarm goes off and someone is in your house. I myself wear contacts and take them out every night. This is my biggest concern with shooting at night. Glasses are rough as well since they can fog easily if you have to go outside peripheral vision also sucks Shoes are tricky also I'd hate to have to try and run around my house in crocks or flip flops. No one ever really covers this topic and would like to hear your input. 3. Modern metal sounds more heavy and screaming than old school metal. Do you consider 80s metal to be rock? 4. Mac, when you plan your yearly training schedule around the country do you pick the locations first and then get students or do you get requests to come and train then open it up? 5. Are you concerned about relying too much upon personal technology (phones, Alexa, etc)? What's the best mindset for balancing technology without getting weak and too reliant upon them? 6. Mac, what was the biggest lesson you learned in the forces that applied in civilian life but took some time to realize. Maybe something that wasn't obvious. 7. What's the most “unbadass” thing you do or are into? Something that people would think is unbadass. 8. What's your favorite AC/DC album and why? 9. When should a band hang it up and retire? 10. Are you going to see the new Top Gun? Are you fans of the original? 11. What's one food that most people love that you don't? 12. What are thoughts on goal-setting? Daily, weekly, quarterly, yearly, beyond?
