Slayer's final gig was on November 30, 2019, in the band's Los Angeles hometown. But the night marked a new beginning for iconic Slayer songwriter/guitarist Kerry King. The band co-founder wasn't nearly finished; he had much more brutal and provocative music brewing, stages to dominate, heads to roll. King's sound and vision manifest in the 13 songs on From Hell I Rise, the first solo outing in King's four decades of slaying the metal universe. His particular brand of blunt power, incisive lyrical themes, and aural assault are finally unleashed on May 17, 2024. The arrival of one of the most anticipated albums of 2024- and one of the most eagerly awaited metal records ever-finds King beyond stoked. "It's the best feeling I've ever had. There will be some faces punched in," he says. The guitarist quickly addresses the most-asked question: "I think people are going to compare it to Slayer. I'm not afraid of that because I think it stands up to anything we've done in our history, musically, performance-wise." That said, "There will be people complaining, Why does it sound like Slayer?' And 'why doesn't it sound more like Slayer? That's just what people do." Joining the King crusade is a lineup that began with Slayer drummer Paul Bostaph. "Paul's kind of like my [Vinny] Appice to Ronnie James Dio," King says. "I knew Paul wanted to be part of this since 2018. My initial plan was to bring [Gary] Holt, but then I thought I probably shouldn't have any more Slayer pieces, so that went Phil Demmel's way." The band is completed by bassist Kyle Sanders (Hellyeah), and in the much-talked-about vocalist spot, Mark Osegueda (Death Angel), a friend of King's since the early '80s Cali thrash days. The lineup kills. From the instrumental entrée "Diablo" into the relentless, repentless "Where I Reign," to the last cut, the statement-making, full-circle title track "From Hell I Rise," King and co. are in full control. I had the good fortune to speak with Slayer's Kerry King about his new solo album, From Hell I Rise, which drops on May 17th. What I've heard has been a brutal onslaught, like you'd expect! He told me why he chose that name for the album, there were other ones, but he picked this one, as it ends the album on track 13. He also told me about the flavor of the album. In case you haven't heard anything from it, I've included the two songs they've dropped from the album below. We also discussed how he got the members for the band, which includes Mark Osegueda (Death Angel), Slayer drummer Paul Bostaph, HellYeah's Kyle Sanders, and Phil Demmel rounding out the band. He said this was his "A Team" and he got the players he wanted. Kerry King On Turning 60 We also talked about his upcoming 60th birthday, which will be the first show in Europe. Over his 60 years, he's made lots of memories, some he can't remember....like a story of the early days of Megadeth that David Ellefson told me about. Barry Kerch is up next. Shinedown has a lot going on this year, including a new hot sauce. Symptom Chipotle Garlic Sauce is their latest creation. Barry talks about how this came to be, and the fact that he's a big hot sauce fan. We also talked about new music from the band, the album he thinks best represents what they're all about, The Rock Hall, and more. It's always great to talk with Barry, even if this is my first time interviewing him solo..... video to come. Thanks for listening!
An interview that is a long time coming, I reached out to Phil Demmel a little over a year ago and with things happening in both our lives we finally had a moment recently to sit down and talk metal, and just life over all. This was recorded back at the time of his last show with Vio-Lence and the announcement for the Kerry King album and tour. The day before this interview, there were Slayer reuinion dates released by DWP, somewhat overshadowing the announcement of KK tour dates. Please keep in mind that if you rate and review the show the algorithm seems to like that, and if you like the show, please share and recommend it to anyone else in your circle who likes metal. Much love and respect. MRJ. Phil DemmelFrom his early years with Vio-lence through a prolific career with Machine Head and onto his current role in Kerry King's band, guitarist Phil Demmel is thrash-metal royalty. Did we mention he's also filled in for Slayer, Overkill, Testament, Lamb of God and others? He joins us to discuss the upcoming Kerry King album, “From Hell I Rise,” (due May 17), his impressive collection of drumsticks, his proudest albums, an upcoming project with Armored Saint vocalist John Bush (whoops!) and high praise from Billy Gibbons. Created and Produced by Jared Tuten
You know Kerry King as the legendary guitarist of what some would say are the ultimate heavy metal band, Slayer. Well a few years ago Slayer announced their retirement, they were hanging up the riffs for good. So Kerry being Kerry King took some songs he had already been working on and decided to put out a solo record. He's got a great lineup of musicians with him including Paul Bostaph of Slayer, Phil Demmel formerly of Machine Head, Kyle Sanders from Hellyeah and singing is Mark Osegueda of Death Angel. That reads like a supergroup of metal lineup, but here they are playing with Kerry King. The finished product is the album From Hell I Rise due out on May 17th. Kerry sits down with me to fill us in on how this project came out of the ashes of Slayer.I should also mention that Slayer did reunite and are playing some select festivals later this year, but how that happened will have to be saved for another conversation down the line.

Dragonforce's Herman Li is joining us for this week's MetalSucks Podcast! The band's latest album Warp Speed Warriors is coming out this Friday, March 15, so Li tells us how Dragonforce landed the Despicable Me 4 trailer, how we have noticed metal is getting its due in the advertising world, his physical music collection being across the pond, and how his London home is a bit of a time machine. Naturally, we also discuss the last video game he remembers beating in the arcade, the album artwork from concept to completion, the extra goodies Dragonforce gives out when the band does meet and greets, and why it's important to be able to compromise on co-headlining tours. Petar and Sylvia discuss the momentous release of the new Judas Priest record Invincible Shield and how they're the first heavy metal band to release two albums 50 years apart. Petar also shares a personal 'Proud Papa' moment involving the record. As for the news, they discussed Phil Demmel being surprised about the Slayer reunion announcement, Burton C. Bell releasing his first solo track, and a bill being introduced to Congress that would increase streaming payments for musicians. Originally formed in the thrash metal mecca known as The Bay Area a year before Metallica was even a thing (shortly before relocating to the Tri-County, metropolitan Seattle, Washington realm), METAL CHURCH continues to bless congregations of faithful metal fans with their own unique brand of thrash infused progressive power metal which has relentlessly persisted and triumphed for more than four decades. While we acknowledge “we can't judge entire albums” by just a sample of songs from each one, there's no denying the consistent sonic salvation found throughout the entire METAL CHURCH discography. Find out which riff may have influenced the mighty Slayer and discover the reason why turning on the blacklights in the Bunkerpoon bears a striking resemblance to a planetarium. Get ready for a “homework assignment” (thanks to an elusively familiar riff which earwormed us into a fit of obsessed madness), behold “the ultimate insult” for “those of you who don't know how to count in Roman” (or do math), be sure to NOT get your burger “bunless” (because “the meat lives between the buns”) and JOIN US as we go INSIDE THE METAL with Seattle's saints of thrash infused progressive power metal, METAL CHURCH. The guys finish things with discussion on the current AC/DC lineup and whether or not it is really the band with only two members from the classic 'Back In Black' lineup in tow. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/cmspn/message

Join Podcast Patreon It's time for a catch up with the Mr Help You Out On Guitar of metal, Phil Demmel. This chat finds Phil on the Overkill tour bus as he helps fill in for them but don't be fooled, this is all about Vio-Lence and their return to releasing new stuff. In this case the EP Let The World Burn. We talk all about how the songs came together, how they made the progression from shitty live band to the super tight set up they are now and what the future holds for Phil as well as Vio-Lence. There is also a review of some of the major and not so major news stories, a melting brain, and the word documentary gets used a lot for no reason. This Is Magik Bollocks. Vio-Lence may not have the largest back catalog of releases but they're a band that's been around since 1985 and have been a huge force in thrash metal, even through the 29 years since their last full length. New EP, Let The World Burn (Metal Blade Records), sounds like they've been steadily releasing work since then, they haven't lost a step and in fact rip it up like never before. As an EP, it rolls by way too fast but is an amazing piece of work that no one should sleep on. Buke recently sat down with guitarist Phil Demmel to discuss the new EP, how it came together and getting back in that thrash mindset. They also cover Phil's storied career in Machine Head and how The Blackening was such a lightning rod as well as how his other projects have colored his playing over the years, fatherhood and how it's the best thing ever, Phil's bar and how that experience has been, and so much more. This is a killer conversation, so grab your beverage of choice and settle in for another edition of the Nine Circles Audio Thing.9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
This week on the Loaded Radio Podcast we are joined by singer Sean Killian from Bay Area thrash metal veterans VIO-LENCE. VIO-LENCE have returned with "Let The World Burn", their upcoming EP of new music which is also their first original release since 1993's "Nothing To Gain". The five-song collection will be available worldwide on March 4 via Metal Blade Records. Filling out the band's ranks on "Let The World Burn" alongside Killian and guitarist Phil Demmel are original drummer Perry Strickland, former OVERKILL guitarist Bobby Gustafson and former FEAR FACTORY bassist Christian Olde Wolbers. "Let The World Burn" was recorded with Juan Urteaga at Trident Studios (TESTAMENT, MACHINE HEAD, EXODUS), with mixing handled by Tue Madsen (THE HAUNTED, MESHUGGAH) and Grammy Award-winning engineer Ted Jensen (ALICE IN CHAINS, DEFTONES, PANTERA). In the interview, Sean discusses what led to the band's return, former members of the group, being a part of the Bay area thrash scene and much more. And as always in the second half of the show we connect with Loaded Radio's Johnny Rude live from Las Vegas, Nevada to discuss the week in hard rock and heavy metal.

Mosh!
BYZANTINE vocalist/guitarist Chris "OJ" Ojeda and bassist Ryan Postlethwait talk discovering Metallica; the failure of old-school tab books; high school talent shows; winning a pair of Lars Ulrich's drum sticks in a MetClub contest; meeting the band in a VIP experience; the Metallica monitor mix; each of the Metallica albums; how metal fans react to the evolution of various bands; the righthand of James Hetfield; and the story of the "Quarantine Jam" version of "Shortest Straw" featuring OJ, Phil Demmel (ex-Machine Head), Chris Kael (Five Finger Death Punch), and Speak N' Destroy veterans Mike Portnoy (ex-Dream Theater) and Doc Coyle (Bad Wolves). Speak N' Destroy podcast theme by Scott Mellinger. Visit the Speak N' Destroy website and socials HERE. Part of the PopCurse podcast network.
Phil Demmel returns to the Talk Toomey Podcast! Phil is one of my favorite all time guests and this one does not disappoint. Phil and I chat about having big heads and large hats, Titans / Raiders and his newest baby. He discusses being Mr. Quarantine jam and how that helped with his confidence in playing. He spills the beans on almost playing Bloodstock with Devin Townsend. He is so proud of the 5 new Vio-Lence songs and the legacy of the band. He ends with a tour of his bar and talks about making a drumstick chandelier in tribute to Joey Jordison.
My guest on Episode 213 of The Brooklyn Blast Furnace is a "Neighborhood guy". With roots in Brooklyn and residing in Long Island, Mark Menghi has done and continues to do amazing things. From being a regular at L'Amour to playing in local bands in venues all over New York City. He became friendly with members of legendary metal bands. He founded and put together "Metal Allegiance" with him, Dave Ellefson of "Megadeth", Mike Portnoy of "Dream Theater" and a ton of other bands and Alex Skolnick of "Testament". The even cooler thing is that they rotate guest singers and musicians. There's been appearances by Phil Anselmo, Gary Holt, Zetro, Andreas Kisser, Charlie Benante, Geezer Butler, Mark Osegueda and a ton of others. Way too many to name. He also played bass on the "BPMD" project with Bobby Blitz, Phil Demmel and Mike Portnoy as well. Super interesting guy. Much respect. Enjoy.

New Wave Of American Heavy Metal.

After a great intro, the nasty speed kicks in at the 40 second mark with no frills, before the controversial Sean Killian’s vocals rip in. He can’t sing, but it does it fast and with hardcore-esque panache, so it works for the approach and grows on you. Shout out to Dean Dell’s killer bass, which rivals D.D. Verni here.
Doc welcomes Vio-Lence guitarist, Phil Demmel, to the show and they talk about how Phil has been dealing with life during the pandemic, how his decision to leave Machine Head has affected his life positively, confronting and questioning his playing abilities, why filling in for Slayer saved his music career, how the two bonded during the touring cycle for Through The Ashes of Empires in his early days in Machine Head, his new cover project, BPMD, reuniting with Vio-Lence, and take a walk down memory lane about the late 80s thrash scene and why Vio-Lence hung it up the first time around. It was pretty cool to have had the opportunity to speak with three members of one of my favorite metal bands. I started with the singer, Sean Killian, then guitarist Phil Demmel and now... my guest on Episode 180 of The Brooklyn Blast Furnace is the drummer for "Vio-Lence", Perry Strickland! Such a fun guy to chop it up with. We speak about some of the crazy but absolutely fun things he did with the other members of the band when they were kids that, nowadays would be frowned upon. The history of the band, record labels, the records, and especially the long awaited upcoming "Vio-Lence" EP that will be released on "Metal Blade Records". It was truly a lot of fun to bullshit with him. I hope you enjoy this one. "Vio-Lence" Rules.
We discuss Phil's current projects... including one that features Chris Jericho, Johnny Christ from Avenged Sevenfold, Nita Strauss, and more! Plus, tips on how to make it in the music industry, and much more.

The Isolation Sessions: Volume 18!!! The last in this series that I did during the Coronavirus pandemic of 2020. I close this out with the legendary Phil Demmel! Founder and guitarist of "Vio-Lence", "BPMD", ex "Machine Head", "Technocracy" and singer for "Torque". This was another one of those episodes that I never thought I'd ever have a chance to do. My teenage years (and still to this day), "Vio-Lence" was a big part of my soundtrack. We go right into the upcoming new "Vio-Lence" record. We talk about "BPMD", his side project with Bobby Blitz from "Overkill", Mike Portnoy from "Dream Theater" and Marc Menghi from "Metal Allegiance". Their debut record, "American Made" is available now. It's a record of 70's rock songs with a metal twist. We talk about his departure from "Machine Head" after a sixteen year run with them as well as him getting a text from Kerry King from "Slayer" asking him if we could fill in for Gary Holt for a few dates on their final leg of their final tour. Phil Rules. I hope you enjoy this.
METAL ALLEGIANCE and BPMD bassist Mark Menghi talks about jamming with James Hetfield, playing one of Cliff Burton's basses onstage as the late Ray Burton looked on, discovering Metallica, and the origin stories behind both of his bands: Metal Allegiance with Alex Skolnick (Testament), Mike Portnoy (ex-Dream Theater), and David Ellefson (Megadeth) and BPMD, with Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth (Overkill), Phil Demmel (ex-Machine Head), and Portnoy. Bobby Blitz and Mark Menghi from supergroup metal band BPMD join our show for a good laid back ball-busting conversation about their new debut album - "American Made". The relationship between the two show the chemistry and respect they have for one another as they describe the origins of this project. Along with bandmates Phil Demmel and Mike Portnoy, BPMD have manifested the link in the chain to the 70s classic rock covers to the likes of ZZ TOP, Mountain, Ted Nugent, and many more. Dive into this episode now as they talk about how the creation of this band got to where they are today and buy/stream BPMD's newest gem "American Made" out now on Napalm Records.
Mikey Doling joins Scott this week for an illuminating conversation on Soulfly, Snot, and much much more!Hailing from Coachella, California, Mikey formed Snot in the early 90's. Fronted by the late Lynn Strait, Snot were ahead of the curve in many ways. In this conversation, Mikey shares the story of how he found Lynn fronting a band in a pizza joint and how they came together. He also shares some small world connections with Ugly Kid Joe and Shannon Larkin of Godsmack being instrumental in solidifying Snot's lineup.Another California band that came up on the scene in the early 90's was Korn. In this talk, Mikey shares stories of doing shows with Korn as well as Deftones. There are some funny reflections on fashion choices of the nu-metal scene as well. Also discussed is Snot's inclusion on the 1998 Ozzfest tour and how the planets aligned for that to happen. The momentum was building with the release of 1997's 'Get Some' but everything was cut short by the untimely death of Strait. The band has, however, carried on in different incarnations. A noteable part of the band's history was the album 'Strait Up.' Featuring several guest vocalists, the album was done as a tribute to Strait. While the album received much acclaim, you'll hear about the difficulties behind it in this discussion. After the death of Lynn Strait, Mikey would go on to join Soulfly. The story of how he joined the band is very interesting. It was a true trial-by-fire situation leading up to his first show. Mikey would officially join the band for their 'Primitive' album. In this discussion, he discusses its creation and the work ethic involved. Mikey would stay with Soulfly until 2004.Other topics in this talk include Invitro, Channel Zero, Phil Demmel, solo work, hanging at Ozzy's house, and much more!Be sure to check out Mikey's new band Woyote at https://www.woyote-official.com/We hope you enjoy Scott's talk with Mikey Doling and SHARE with a friend!

Success and longevity are the least of what you could say about Phil Demmel. But mainly, his friends and peers in the industry just say “He’s just such a good guy”… In a decade of interviewing artists that I love, this was by far the most impactful and touching. What I thought would be another awesome interview turned into one of the most real, true and honest retrospectives of a massive career that didn’t even stop for 24 hours when Phil left Machine Head. Onwards and upwards, from the Slayer stage, to reuniting with Vio-Lence, an album with BPMD, Torque, and a very exciting new project: Echoes of Reckoning with Dave Ellefson of Megadeth, Dave McClain of Sacred Reich, and Brandan Schieppati of Bleeding Through.Listen to learn more about the music, but also listen to learn more about the man. https://www.instagram.com/phildemmel/https://www.instagram.com/vio_lence_band/https://www.instagram.com/bpmdofficial/#EchoesofReckoning @ScandalousOfficial on IG@ScandalousSays on Twitter Sponsored by Master Supply Co., Tour Support CBD and Hella Hot Hot SauceEdited by Myrriah Gossett
