Paul Thomas Anderson just made an action movie you can take your in-laws to without a 20-minute lecture about American masculinity and bowling metaphors. One Battle After Another is PTA's $175 million plunge into the now, mixing the absurdity of a stoner dad in a bathrobe with a razor-sharp allegory about fascism, power, and family. Leonardo DiCaprio leads as a washed-up revolutionary trying to rescue his daughter (Chase Infinity) from Sean Penn's snarling, broken military villain, and the result is both wildly funny and uncomfortably timely.Pete Wright, Tommy Metz III, and Steve Sarmento dig deep into the contradictions and triumphs of the film. They debate Sean Penn's feral Lockjaw, the Christmas Adventurers Club (absurdist satire or terrifying cabal?), and the grounded humanity of the father-daughter story that anchors the spectacle. From Benicio del Toro's Zen “Sensei” to Johnny Greenwood's jagged score to the breathtaking desert chase sequence, the conversation unpacks how PTA manages to hold together chaos, comedy, and heartbreak in a film that already feels like one of the year's defining works. As always, the panelists disagree (sometimes passionately) on the ending, the satire, and whether it all needs that extra denouement in Office 55. But they unite on one point: this is the kind of audacious, ambitious, theatrical cinema you absolutely need to see on the biggest screen you can find.Links & NotesWatch Now: Apple TV | Amazon | LetterboxdOriginal Theatrical TrailerVery Loosely Adapted from Vineland (Classic, 20th-Century, Penguin) by Thomas Pynchon Support The Next Reel Family of Film Podcasts:Become a member for just $5/month or $55/yearJoin our Discord community of movie loversThe Next Reel Family of Film Podcasts:Cinema Scope: Bridging Genres, Subgenres, and MovementsThe Film BoardMovies We LikeThe Next Reel Film PodcastSitting in the DarkConnect With Us:Main Site: WebMovie Platforms: Letterboxd | FlickchartSocial Media: Facebook | Instagram | Threads | Bluesky | YouTube | PinterestYour Hosts: Pete | JJ | Steve | Tommy | Andy | Ocean Shop & Stream:Merch Store: Apparel, stickers, mugs & moreWatch Page: Buy/rent films we've discussedOriginals: Source material from our episodesSpecial offers: Letterboxd Pro/Patron discount | Audible

The team takes down the Master of the World and his henchmen, clearing the path for the next phase of their mission. Reuniting with Lockjaw, the group is finally transported to the location of Kang's Space Chair. After sneaking past its elite guards, the heroes activate the chair—instantly hurtling through space and time. They arrive in ancient Egypt, surrounded by towering statues and golden sands. Their welcome party? None other than Ra Ma Tut, an earlier incarnation of Kang, orders his guards to seize the "traitors." At his side stands a young and imposing figure: En Sabah Nur, whom Token recognizes as the future tyrant Apocalypse. The group meets with Lockjaw, who tells them that someone named Godking Kang has come from the future with a warning that Galactus is coming to devour the Earth. When the Royal Family asks for proof, Kang pulls out something that takes control of the entire Royal Family, including any guards. Lockjaw was the only one who made it out. After revealing this, the group is teleported to another plane of existence where they meet Uatu the Watcher and Zatu the Narrator, who tell the group that everything depends on their choices. Afterward, Lockjaw tells the group that Kang is in control of the Royal group and his Space Chair is being held somewhere else. The group decided to go for the chair before confronting Kang. On this episode, Marc talks to Simon Price, author of “Curepedia: An A to Z of The Cure,” published on December 12, 2023. It's a literal encyclopedia of the great British band the Cure, arranged in alphabetical order by subjects, including entries on albums, singles, and band members, plus themed entries such as Drugs, Hair, Drowning, and even Lockjaw. Price's weaves interesting narratives in many of the entries, with tons of research to back him up.As he writes in his introduction, “...even though this book contains facts, so many facts, the facts themselves are not the point. What I've aimed to do is to cross-reference, contextualize, analyze, and provide perspective. To draw unseen connections, and find parallels that are not immediately apparent.”A note about this episode: As Simon and I were chatting, the audio sounded glitchy and choppy. We tried to fix this and thought we had, but the resulting recording still sounds that way. So I want to apologize in advance if it's a tough listen, but I felt that our conversation was so good that I didn't want to redo it. If you find it totally unlistenable, I've also made a transcript which I posted on my blog at this URL: https://themusicbookpodcast.blogspot.com/2024/01/transcript-interview-with-simon-price.htmlThanks for bearing with us!

Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Richard, and, (checks notes), Jake are back for an all-new episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast!Blake is away to Sweetwater for some sort of content creator jamboree so we are blessed to be joined by the giant intellect of Jake Steffes, Wampler's top engineer, and he has some grievances to air. Richard is intrigued to hear about Jake's early years, how he got into electronics and how he wound up making awesome pedals via Brian's legendary deck and fishpond.Brian and Richard have a genius idea for a new sport. Sorry, not genius, whats the word I'm looking for? Idiotic. Yes Idiotic. The guys then take a look at the history of one of Wampler's best selling pedals, the Ethereal, which was one of Jakes proudest achievements at the time despite the challenges of the limited interface. Richard also drops a large hint before Brian completely destroys him. Paul Reed Smith have announced the Myles Kennedy signature guitar which looks somewhat like a telecaster, and so the guys talk about it. Richard is currently not a fan of the aesthetics, but he may be swayed as time heals all shocks, and admits he would be up for trying one. There is some Bass talk, and there is band talk, because Jake happens to be a fantastic player in an awesome band! The guys then look at the topology of the new Boss delay machine and Jake breaks down what he loves about it in an almost on-topic section of the podcast. 4 legged transistors, StupidGPT, Circuit board saw, Terraformalayverbstortion, Flying Figs, the 18 inch pedal, Lockjaw, we love BBDs, Zucc vs Musk...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!Check out Lockjaw on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/lockjawx.officialWe are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Merch and DIY mods:https://modyourownpedal.com/collections/booksFind us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdVrg4Wl3vjIxonABn6RfWwContact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show
