For 40 years, Dream Theater has been one of the biggest progressive rock bands in the world, if not the biggest. The driving force behind their music has been legendary drummer Mike Portnoy, but for more than a decade, he and the band were split. That all changed last year when Mike rejoined the band and they recorded their latest album, “Parasomnia.” He sits down with Tom Power to talk about reuniting with Dream Theater and Rush's influence on the band. If you like this conversation, you'll probably also enjoy Tom's interviews with Geddy Lee or Alex Lifeson.

Did you know that Randy went to hitman school? How about the fact that Kev feels that consistency is key when it comes to being an asshole. We also discuss what type of music a psychopath might listen to and what music we've been listening to other than Queen. The Cardinal is complaining about football again and Kev is frankly getting a little tired of his whining! I don't know if this partnership is going to last!If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "This song is brill" or possibly, "Hitman school"Today's episode looks at a Freddie song that was assisted by Brian and John and taken from the Innuendo album; "The Hitman"NOTE: Skip forward to 23:47 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The song at the end of the episode is a very rough mix of Kev, his brother Dan, and his Dad, John, playing a White Stripes song back in 2016. It was recorded remotely and then shoved into Dropbox to mix. Very badly. This one should probably go to the Cardinal at some point to be reworked... but anyway, it's a bit of lo-fi fun and it's titled "Effect and Cause" and you can find it here : https://youtu.be/SRRD-m43xrgIf you want to listen to the song The Delegator's brilliant cover of Nowhere to Run you can find it here: https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=E3p7yDec38o and if you want to watch the clip Kev was talking about of Mike Portnoy playing Shake It Off, you'll find that here: https://youtu.be/cHl_gsd0OR0Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Facebook, Bluesky, and Discord! Dream Theater fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Parasomnia, the progressive metal icons' latest full-length album, and now that it's here, it's proving to be one of their most compelling releases in years. With the return of founding drummer Mike Portnoy and a fresh creative energy flowing through the band, Parasomnia not only marks a reunion but also signals an exciting new chapter in Dream Theater's storied career. On this episode of The Loaded Radio Podcast, host Scott Penfold sits down with Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie for an in-depth conversation about the making of Parasomnia, the themes behind its haunting and immersive sound, and what it was like having Portnoy back behind the kit after nearly a decade and a half. A Return to Familiar Ground with a Fresh Perspective Parasomnia, which arrived on February 7, 2025, via InsideOut Music, is the band's first release with Portnoy since 2009's Black Clouds & Silver Linings. The album, produced by guitarist John Petrucci and mixed by Andy Sneap, explores eerie and unsettling dream states, weaving together complex rhythms, intricate melodies, and soaring vocals. From the opening moments of In The Arms of Morpheus to the epic closer The Shadow Man Incident, the record is a journey through subconscious fears, sleep paralysis, and the bizarre world of dreams. Tracks like A Broken Man, Dead Asleep, Midnight Messiah, and Bend The Clock further build upon these themes, making for an album that's as cinematic as it is musically intricate. The first single, Night Terror, is a nearly ten-minute thrill ride that perfectly captures the essence of the record's dark undertones. Mike Portnoy's Return and Mike Mangini's Departure Of course, one of the biggest talking points surrounding Parasomnia is Mike Portnoy's return. After a 14-year absence, the founding drummer is back, and his chemistry with the band remains undeniable. But with that, Mike Mangini, who had been an integral part of the band since 2010, stepped away, making for an emotional transition. In this interview, LaBrie gives insight into how the band navigated that change, what it's been like having Portnoy's energy back in the studio, and how it's influencing the band's creative process moving forward. The Future of Dream Theater With Parasomnia now out in the world, what's next for Dream Theater? A massive tour is on the horizon, but beyond that, LaBrie teases what's in store for the band's evolving sound and future projects. Could this be the beginning of a new golden era for the progressive metal legends? Find out all that and more in this exclusive conversation with James LaBrie on The Loaded Radio Podcast. Listen to the full episode below!

This week get your nerd on with us as we are raiding the Prog Rock crypt again. However, this will be a much different journey into the world of progressiveness, as we are covering Neo-Prog from the early to mid-1980s. A much different time for progressive rock, as these bands were influenced by more than just Genesis, Yes, and King Crimson. These groups were injecting heavy doses of hard rock, new wave, punk, and pop into their progressive Day-Glo soup! Keep an open mind and give it a listen…What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Prog rock in the 60s and 70s initially had mostly classical music and jazz influences, but over the last 40 years it has come to include other fusions of music styles including metal, punk, funk, folk, and electronic. From Zappa and Sgt. Pepper to the 1980s music by bands like Marillion and Pendragon… This is Neo-Prog Rock! Get yer nerd on!Songs this week include:Saga – “Wind Him Up” from Worlds Apart (1981)Twelfth Night – “East Of Eden” from Smiling At Grief (1982)IQ – “The Wake” from The Wake (1985) Pendragon – “Fly High Fall Far” from The Jewel (1985)Gowan – “Keep Up The Fight” from Gowan (1982)It Bites – “All In Red” from The Big Lad In The Windmill (1986)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/
On this episode, we're joined by Bassist & Heavy Metal “Lifer” David Ellefson. Best known for his rich & illustrious history with legends Megadeth & current band Kings Of Thrash, Dave connected with us from Southern California in advance of the amazing week off Heavy Metal events taking place leading up to The NAMM 2024 Show. Dave covers off on the Kings Of Thrash performances scheduled at the Ultimate NAMM Metal Jam & the Metal Hall Of Fame gala, the Metal Allegiance 10th anniversary & Montrose Remembered concerts, plus NAMM itself in which he will be promoting the Ellefson Coffee Company & the soon to be released Nick Menza documentary, “This Was My Life”. In the conversation, we also take a look back in time to the Summer of 1986 when Megadeth visited Rochester, NY & The House Of Guitars as a support act for King Diamond, plus he re-visits his FIRST Heavy Metal supergroup, Hail!, a band that also included Mike Portnoy, Andreas Kisser, & Tim “Ripper” Owens amongst others. Covering what felt like 40 years of Heavy Metal history in 30 minutes, Dave shares some great memories of his life in the heavy metal scene & on the road as he's performed in pretty much every country you could imagine and then some! On a personal side of things, Dave shares some pearls of wisdom, his motto for 2024 & how he manages & balances his thriving businesses & musical career, and what's to come down the line (hint: another book may be on the horizon). Another example of a great, unique, conversation filled with in-depth anecdotes and disclosures found only here at Metal Mayhem ROC. Thank you for the support and remember to always KEEP IT HEAVY.
