It's finally happening. Andrea has been threatening it for years, and now she's got backup in the form of the great Kerri Sullivan, who our listeners know as the editor of New Jersey Fan Club: Artists and Writers Celebrate the Garden State and the person behind Jersey Collective. This episode is the first installment of our unofficial book club. They're starting with a conversation with Dewar MacLeod about his fantastic book Making the Scene in the Garden State: Popular Music in New Jersey from Edison to Springsteen and Beyond. It's a really fun, accessible, informative look at the various points in space, time, and place that have helped to create and define Jersey's rich, varied relationship with music. They talk about everything from Edison's crappy taste in music, to the club where Bruce really got his start, to visiting the Meatlocker as an adult, and a million things in between. We think you're gonna love this book.Making the Scene in the Garden State: Popular Music in New Jersey from Edison to Springsteen and Beyond - Use discount code RUP30 for 30% off and free shipping.Check out Jersey Collective Reads Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Oh man I missed you guys! Thank you so much for listening and tuning in to Dream a Little Dream – Our space to talk about art, life and everything in between! I spent some of the time in between learning how to teach yoga. I am starting an early morning class and looking to start a solid practice to start the day. I believe that moving your body and getting your energy flowing is step one to living a creative life. Step 2 to living a creative life is to surround yourself with creative people or people who have the same goals. I met Barbara Rocas when we put the art show on at the Meatlocker or more specifically at the Park St. Market. We, Nocturnal Pops, will be putting on shows in this space and if you are interested in showing your work there you can find us on Facebook at Nocturnal Pops Art Collective. I would describe Barbara Rocas in this way: A serious artist who has discovered her depths, at least for now and is committed to finding the next level for herself and her art. I am so proud to present this interview with Barbara Rocas. She is very engaging and has a lot to offer to not only to this conversation, but the world of art and the world at large. She has a project now where she is putting out a zine, she gave me a copy and it is very cool and has Stickers! Her zine is called Protomatter and I will put the links in the notes – check it out Her commitment to using art to convey her inner truth or the truth of the process of art making in a personal way is inspiring! Please take a listen and I am sure this conversation will motivate you to look at art in a different way. If you would like to be featured on this podcast I am in the business of making podcast about people who are passionate about art or who have taken the step to make a life of dreams! I would love to hear your story – I am committed to learning your hustle and how you have grown the courage to even show your work at the local library or to your best friend. That is what this podcast is about – Courage! Did you know that courage means heart – so let me leave you with the words, if you have a story where you lead with your heart in your full expression of courage I want to hear about it. Please contact me through my website at jessietaylorpaints.com! I appreciate every one of you who have tuned in to listen to this podcast. It really means a lot to me. I have one favor to ask of you know that you have tuned into this, please like this podcast on soundcloud, subscribe or leave a comment. Hearing from you would put a smile on my face, I might even send you a sticker! If I can get 100 subscribers by the end of the year I will make it my mission to figure out how to send stickers to everyone a couple times a year. You can subscribe and then expect to see a sticker, a weird ass sticker made by Yours truly in your mail—don’t worry I will figure out how to find you once you subscribe. Also, if you share this podcast I would forever be grateful and when I send you a sticker you can call me up and ask for 2 more! Help us, me and you, and all of us build the type of world we want to build. –A world where we can express ourselves, where we champion creativity and let ourselves experience a full life of art, love and Stickers! Hey! Welcome back to Dream a Little Dream podcast – our space to talk about art, life and everything in between! I was able to catch Gregery Miller for a conversation and if you haven’t seen any of his work yet you are missing out on his rich imagination. He is a fantastic fantasy illustrator. You most definitely have to check out his work on Instagram and he is circulating his work at various shows, so you can follow him and pick up a comic or a drawing when you get a chance to track him down. He will be at the Heros Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina in June and is engaged in many other things along the way. He is currently working on a comic called the Tales of Reverie which is very rich with detail and definitely a treat for the eyes. You can see glimpses of it on Instagram and you can get many more sneak peeks and insider views if you visit his Patreon page and become a patron. Greg and I speak about the truth about money as an artist in this podcast. It is can be difficult to make enough money to live as an artist sometimes when you haven’t reached the level required to be able to make enough money to live. So until then it is all about thinking positive and continuing to put yourself out there. We both agree that it is a matter of time before his comic style is picked up and he becomes a celebrate comic writer and illustrator. If you haven’t heard of a sight Patreon, which I didn’t know about until Greg told me, but it is a great resource for you to help support up and coming artists and also be on the inside track to experience all the newest developments with a project you may be interested in. I highly suggest you become a patron to him on Patreon so that we can see his Tales of Reverie become a reality! I really want to take a moment to shout out to all of the people who have a dream. And all of the people who continue to pursue their dreams no matter what. I think it is the most important thing in my life and I would go out on a limb and say that I would not know what to do with myself if I was unable to use my imagination and dream of new ways to put my art in front of people. Greg and I are a part of a group called the Nocturnal Pops and we are putting together a show at the Meatlocker in Montclair, New Jersey. If you want to meet or see some of the art that the artists I have interviewed on this podcast make come out on April 20 and 21 between 6pm and midnight and some of us will be there live painting and having a good time listening to live music and enjoying a good romp at the famed Rock and Roll Punk Scene DIY art venue THE Meatlocker! Welcome back to the Dream a Little Dream podcast our space to talk about art, life and everything in between! I recently had the pleasure to speak with Martyr Graff and the Wolf Pack! Martyr has a Clothing line called WEARwolf, instead of werewolf, which is a pretty clever play on words. He is also a painter and we spoke about how he has found his voice and he knows its his voice because it was the voice that wouldn’t leave him alone. It is true that if you are an artist you will be an artist forever. No matter how much you try to suppress it your creative side will always come back out. This is a fitting description for Martyr because he spent some time trying to ignore his artistic side and when he met his girlfriend that he is with now she really tried to help get him back into his sweet spot. He is proud to say that he is now embracing it and working towards using his creativity and exploring more of some past works and collages. I have included links to his work and clothing line in the notes. @martyrgraff @wearwolfusa IG @martyrgraff @wearwolf_usa #martyrgraff #martyrgraffart www.wenidigographics.com www.wearwolf-usa.com https://www.etsy.com/shop/MartyrGraff?ref=s2-header-shopname Being creative is a drive and in this conversation we explore that in detail. It is a drive and a need to create. We spend some time talking about addiction and thinking that creativity came from being inebriated. Martyr indicated that he is completely sober now and has found that being in an altered state is not required in order for him to make art. I think that we concluded that the alcohol and drugs were actually in the way of being creative to some degree or used as a way to suppress it, to feel better about not being able to use the creativity. Not Being able to express yourself and your creativity can lead to all kinds of different problems in life. I am thankful every day that I have an outlet for my creativity. Thank you Martyr for taking the time to speak to me about your journey and sharing with me. I look forward to working with you when we put on a show at the Meatlocker in Montclair, New Jersey in April! If you like this podcast please like it, share it with your friends or leave me a comment. I would love to hear from you. I am grateful that you have taken the time to listen and enjoy this podcast.
