Back on the airwaves of Vinyl Community Podcasts, Alex (Beer & Vinyl) shares a recent interview with musician/songwriter M Ross Perkins. M Ross Perkins is currently a featured artist on the Colemine Records label, and has a new album that dropped on May 2nd (interview recorded prior) entitled "What's The Matter, M Ross?" Composed, performed, and recorded completely by Perkins in his Dayton, OH studio, What's the Matter… is both the most stripped down and expansive within his tryptic of albums ("Wrong, Wrong, Wrong", "E Pluribus M Ross", and Now "What's The Matter..."). The headphone symphonies move with a deliberate, composed sophistication while the lyrics explore fresh territory, turning the camera away from the “butterscotch revue” and pointing it into a mirror. "The touchstones of psych pop remain: flourishes of Nilsson are still here, but so are Gram Parsons and Jonathan Richman. If you want to assign geography to What's the Matter, M Ross?, the album is equal parts Laurel Canyon and Big Pink, more Woodstock the town than the festival. Perkins is a self-contained (late-period) Teenage Fanclub with George Harrison's spiritual sense of inner wanderlust. Want a free copy? Available to anyone in lower 48 states head over to the Beer & Vinyl YouTube channel (specific video link below) and comment with some kind of musical connection to the state of Ohio. Deadline to enter is May 16th, 2025. And don't forget to check out thew new album "What's the Matter, M Ross" at your local independent record store or direct from Colemine Records (link also below). Bottoms up!

Patrick was as kind as they come, and I'll always be grateful to him for both that and for showing me a few corners of the college/community-radio ropes.I'd also be remiss if I didn't give Kyle props for saying that Southern American Gospel might be the next frontier. One of the cooler collection of words spoken to date on the podcast. Please consider paying Brothers Music a visit if you're in the area, and give them an Instagram follow. Thank you to Kyle, and to everyone who tunes in.Cheers.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained within this episode. Over the course of the album's 10 new, original songs, Kelly channels a multitude of influences that reflect a lifetime immersed in the music and culture of soul, R&B, and hiphop - it's the story of an outsider that followed an unorthodox route, always guided by his own creative north star.” Excerpt from https://www.coleminerecords.com/products/thetalespeopletell Monophonics: Bandcamp: https://monophonics.bandcamp.com/album/love-you-better-the-shape-of-my-teardrops Instagram: @monophonics Website: https://www.monophonics.com Records: https://www.coleminerecords.com/collections/monophonics . Working at a piano shop, the Magnolia grandiflora, and getting lofty. Steve Okonski (Okonski, Durand Jones & The Indications) Okonski 'Magnolia' Album Announcement- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5o_pqyRqXc ETHIOPIQUES vol 1-30: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7gkMJUiZc7hglZNsTrdTvt “The studio at 122 West Loveland Avenue was not an unfamiliar space for Steve Okonski, the leader of his eponymous trio Okonski. Ever since the Colemine label set up shop in Loveland, Ohio it has been a host to a number of groups passing through town, including Durand Jones and the Indications who all of this trio's members have connections to. After setting aside some time in winter of 2020, Okonski, trained initially as a classical pianist, invited Michael Isvara “Ish” Montgomery and Aaron Frazer to work on an album that was initially planned to be beat driven and fully composed trio instrumentals. After finishing this first session with some improvisations, a second week was booked in the summer of 2021 to try and capture some more of that spontaneous energy. During this session, the tracks were all improvised and recorded live to a Tascam 388 during several late nights at the Colemine HQ. They were structured to allow the group's collective intuition to fully shape the melodies and arcs of the music.” Excerpt from https://www.coleminerecords.com/products/okonski-magnolia Okonski: Bandcamp: https://okonski.bandcamp.com/album/magnolia Instagram: @steve.okonski Website: https://linktr.ee/okonski?fbclid=PAAaZ7UNGxDxrsIH2z3zq5aOTbjFiUjXEVEjJzyPs0rmxFZHTh31FuguBR69U Merch: https://www.coleminerecords.com/products/okonski-magnolia Durand Jones & The Indications: Instagram: @durandjonesandtheindications Website: https://durandjonesandtheindications.com Bandcamp: https://durandjonesandtheindications.... Tonight we warm up for a very special presentation tomorrow, as Ghost Funk Orchestra is out with their latest album A New Kind of Love via Colemine Records' Karma Chief imprint. As broadcast October 7, 2022 with more hearts than anyone can handle. Tonight we welcome Christopher Leopold aka Human Barbie aka veronicavon to the show to talk about his upcoming Human Barbie EP out Wednesday called no worries. We got a sneaky spin of an unreleased tune to start part 4 for a very nice world premiere, and also got a chance to talk to the artist about the tunes that both inspire him and make him (kinda...not really) rage with jealousy. As broadcast October 6, 2022 with plenty of purified water from Lake Minnetonka. Tonight we go back to 2016 where, in the unfortunate aftermath of Prince's all-too-early demise, his estate decided to open up The Artist's compound in Paisley Park for the viewing public. For the remainder of the first hour we kept it funky with our Sampled weekly, and new tunes from Dustbowl Revival, Al Green, and Arjuna Oakes kept the fresh cuts coming through part 2. Dan Lloyd once again dropped in for our weekly AMPED rock sesh, highlighting some big tunes out this past week and albums that drop tomorrow, with Slipknot, LCD, Paramore, and Anxious being highlights. We also debuted our rock spotlight to finish the show, which honestly is not just two weeks too late, but several seasons, and we highlighted Baek Yerin's rock project The Volunteers to close things.#feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Prince – MusicologyDustbowl Revival – Set Me FreeLady Wray – Through It AllLucas/Heaven – Every City Has a RhythmVieux Farka Toure & Khruangbin – LobboArjuna Oakes & Serebii – Guava Part II (32:03)Durand Jones & The Indications – Giving UpKelly Finnigan – Catch Me I'm FallingAaron Frazer – You Don't Wanna Be My BabyBuddy Guy feat James Taylor – Follow The MoneyAl Green – Wanna SayFela Kuti & Afrika 70 – Alu Jon Jonki Jon Part III (70:21)Slipknot – AdderallYeah Yeah Yeahs – FleezBush – Heavy is the OceanParamore – This is WhyLCD Soundsystem – New Body Rhumba Part IV (1:44:35)Anxious – SunsignVUKOVI – QUENCHThe Beatles – Tomorrow Never Knows (Take 1)King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – Iron LungThe Volunteers – Let Me Go! A little throwback to November 6, 2020 as we had to reschedule with this week's guest artists Say She She, so we went back just under two years to debuting two tracks from An Ode To Escapism, Ghost Funk Orchestra's brilliant album that dropped the next week on Friday the 13th. Unsurprisingly, that would be 2020's SECOND Friday the 13th that calendar year. As broadcast September 22, 2022 with plenty of your boy Roy to keep you company. Tonight we open with the old and new from one of our absolute heroes in Roy Ayers, who just was part of Kyoto Jazz Massive's first album in 19 years! We also funked up the first hour with tons of favorites in Joan As Police Woman, Arjuna Oakes, Serebii, Surprise Chef, and Devon Gilfillian amongst a slew of others. For hour 2, you know the drill as Dan Lloyd brings the heat with our AMPED rock weekly, showing off the good, the bad, and the ugly in rock for this week's season opener. Great tunes from The Beths, Editors, and Meat Wave being highlights although a huge miss from Placebo covering a Tears For Fears classic is thrown in to sabotage the works and finish the show strong & oh so wrong! This week's guest is Matthew Stubbs. As a guitarist and founding member of GA-20, Stubbs has released two well-received albums, toured extensively, ascended the Billboard charts and helped to usher in a traditional blues revival. With a new album on the way — Crackdown, out Sept. 9 on Colemine Records! — and a bunch of shows on the horizon, Stubbs has a lot of modern day things to talk about. Even beyond his work with GA-20, Stubbs has quite an impressive musical resume. Prior to setting out on tour, Stubbs spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas about the new GA-20 record, what it's been like to get back on the road and why he feels it's important to give new life to traditional blues music. Of course, he also spoke about his musical past, including learning to play guitar at an early age, performing throughout New England with his dad's band, moving to Los Angeles in his early 20s and making a living as a side man. Along the way, he talked about touring with notable blues musicians like Janiva Magness and James Watson before landing a spot in the band of the legendary Charlie Musselwhite — where he's spent roughly 15 years and counting. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and GA-20 ("Easy On The Eyes").
