See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Less than two weeks to the premiere of “No Activity” a new true crime podcast with purpose. Similarly to “They Called her Georgia Lee” I'll be working with families in the pursuit of justice for cold cases that have sat idle for far too long. The show will feature exclusive audio interviews with law enforcement, experts, advocates and of course, above everything else, families and friends of the victims… because who better to tell you about them than the people who knew them best? Our first six part series tells the story of Tyra Maria Garcia, a 15 year old girl from Ventura, CA. In 1985, Tyra had everything to look forward to. She was starting a new job, she had lots of friends, she was seeing a new guy… All in all, she was on the come up. Then on the night of Memorial Day celebrations, she told her sister and mother she was going to a friend's house late at night. In spite of a gut feeling that told her older sister Tanya not to let her go, they watched as she rounded the corner of their small apartment complex and disappeared into the night. That was the last time anyone saw Tyra alive. Ten days later she was found wrapped in a blanket, left in an orange grove over an hour away from her home. There was ample evidence at the scene, many of her close friends and family pointing to a likely suspect, plenty of people who saw Tyra that night, and even eye witnesses at two different locations who saw her in the company of two older guys… and yet, here we are 37 years later - almost to the day - still wondering - what happened to Tyra Garcia? Someone knows something. The key to Tyra's case is out there and we're hoping that one of you knows who has it. Or at least you know where the pressure needs to be pushed to get it. Steve Toltz is the author of A Fraction of the Whole, which was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and the Guardian First Book Award and Quicksand, which won the Russell Prize for Humour. Booklist called A Fraction of the Whole ‘a deliriously philosophical novel . . . with uproarious ruminations on freedom, the soul, love, death, and the meaning of life" and in a way that applies to Steve's work as a whole and his new book, Here Goes Nothing. The Irish Times described Here Goes Nothing as, ‘a smart social commentary on our fossil fuel-guzzling, warmongering, information-obsessed, pandemic-riddled world' and as The Scotsman said, he writes with ‘remorseless, brilliantly withering contempt', though this sits alongside a story and characters that are both affecting and strangely moving.Steve's also worked as screenwriter on shows like No Activity and Guilty Party.

“What we deal more in the second season with how your online persona and your real-life persona sometimes can't help but be at odds with one another. In the first episode back we get into how women are treated, how women in relationships are treated online. In a later episode, we deal with how women are or are not allowed to express their anger online as content creators. So it's something we talked a lot about in the room. That fracturing of self, that even in a goofy show that's very lighthearted and entertaining, it's something that we do discuss and try to sneak little tidbits in there.”Ali Schouten is a showrunner, executive producer, and writer who is quickly establishing herself as a creative on the rise as her formidable talent and artistic versatility continue to make waves. Schouten currently serves as the showrunner and executive producer of the wildly successful iCarly revival for Paramount+, which set 10 years later, features Miranda Cosgrove reprising her iconic role. “In developing Harper's character, it felt like just very realistic. We're in a major city that's very liberal, that's very creative, that this would be someone who would be a stylist, who would not necessarily need to have a coming out story because maybe they aren't from a background where… She might have come out as pansexual when she was 13. That probably didn't need to be said. Carly wouldn't be someone you needed to sit down and hold her hand and say, “I've got something to tell you.” That this is someone who would say, “Oh, cool, my roommate brought home a woman.” Or, my roommate brought home someone nonbinary. That's not something that we have to discuss. And Laci has talked a lot about how there is a place for that in a lot of shows and it's really important to have art like that, but it's also equally important to have shows where it's not this big deal coming out scene. That these are people just existing joyfully and living their lives and pursuing their dreams and relationships. That's equally valuable. I think we really felt that with the nature of the show that was the opportunity we had. It's such a joyful show that why not just show someone dating who they want to date and who they connect with.”Ali Schouten is a showrunner, executive producer, and writer who is quickly establishing herself as a creative on the rise as her formidable talent and artistic versatility continue to make waves. Growing up on comedies like Monty Python, Trent O'Donnell has always been fascinated with “dumb comedies.” He got his start making shorts, commercials, and eventually landed some work in television. As a writer-director, he's known for The Moodys, No Activity, and most recently, the movie Ride the Eagle. Trent O'Donnell met Jake Johnson while directing episodes of New Girl for Fox. In their latest collaboration, Jake Johnson stars as Leif. The description reads, “Leif is left with a conditional inheritance when his estranged mother Honey dies. Before he can move into her picturesque Yosemite cabin, he has to complete her elaborate, and sometimes dubious, to-do list.” In this interview, O'Donnell talks about making friendships rather than networking, how he got a movie made during the pandemic, writing with creative limitations, putting pressure on “the word,” how to edit improv based on story, the lack of comedy movie stars today, and how to keep minimal environments visually interesting. Ted Alexandro is a comic who believes deeply in social responsibility. Whether it's responsibility to his fellow comics as he fought for better pay from clubs, or to his fellow citizens as part of the Occupy Wall Street movement, or to his audience as he wrestles with effectively addressing the Trump Era on the comedy stage. Ted talks with Marc about the evolving nature of a comedian's role in the culture, how his experience as an elementary school teacher prepared him for standup, and why he felt it was necessary to do material at the Comedy Cellar that was critical of Louis CK's return to the Comedy Cellar. This episode is sponsored by Funny or Die's No Activity on CBS All Access, Omaha Steaks, Molekule, and YouTube Music. Guest co-host Jordan Clifford joins Shonali for Episode 61 while Christian Felix is in Singapore doing who knows what. Jordan helps Shonali analyze her disgusting dream.  Our first guest is actress, dancer, comedian Sunita Mani. Shonali and Sunita are family friends. Jordan and Sunita were in the same crew together in college at Emerson College.  Jordan tried to make Sunita cry once.  We discuss Sunita's success as an actress (Mr. Robot, GLOW) and if it has gone to her head. Look for Sunita in No Activity.  Out of nowhere, a podcast protestor interrupts our show!  Our second guest is comedian, writer & producer Myka Fox.  Myka just celebrated her birthday and Shonali forces Myka to tell a depressing story about a specific past birthday. Find out whether Myka ever had an ex-boyfriend help her move?  Myka has the best Twitter account & you must follow her.  Check out Myka's Friday night weekly show at the Cobra Club called Live From Outer Space.  Sidenote: Have you seen the PBS documentary on Maya Angelou? It's on Netflix now.  Ep. 61 Get It Off Your Chest is with audience member Ricky Trabucco.  We have some good ones: airplane boarding eagerness, people with clipboards & purchasing lottery tickets.  Our final guest is musician Shannon Wright.  Shannon is a guitarist, pianist, singer-songwriter and her performances are raw, emotional, breathtaking and powerful all at one moment.  Shonali & Shannon are long time friends who just discovered they both sold ice cream and were accused of stealing as adolescents.  Shannon is shy.  Shannon is a prolific artist who is starting work on her 11th solo album.  She is adored by the likes of Jordan Clifford, Steve Albini, Yann Tiersen and recently composed the music for  French director Guillaume Nicloux's To The Ends Of The World.  Listen to Shannon Wright perform Avalanche live at We Don't Even Know.

Thursday, 11/2:S.W.A.T. (s1, 1, total?, 10p, CBS)Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson, a Los Angeles S.W.A.T. lieutenant, is assigned to lead a highly skilled unit in the community where he grew up. Torn between loyalty to the streets, where the cops are sometimes the enemy, and allegiance to his brothers in blue, he strategically straddles the two worlds. Hondo encourages his team to rely on communication and respect over force and aggression, but when a crisis erupts, these unflinching men and women are prepared to put their tactical training to the test. Tuesday, 11/7:Damnation (Aden Young dropped out due to creative differences and was replaced by Killian Scott; s1, 1, total?, 10p, USA)Seth Davenport is a man masquerading as a small-town Iowa preacher in hopes of starting a full-blown insurrection against the status quo. Focused on his mission, he is unaware that an industrialist tycoon has hired a professional strikebreaker named Creeley Turner to stop the uprising by any means necessary. But unbeknownst to those around them, these two men already share a secret, bloody past. This epic saga about the secret history of the 1930s American heartland centers on the mythic conflict and bloody struggle between big money and the downtrodden, God and greed, charlatans and prophets. Sunday, 11/5:SMILF (s1, 2, total, 10p, Showtime)Bridgette Bird is a smart, young single mom living in South Boston who is trying to navigate life with a very unconventional family. As she struggles to make ends meet, she strives to create a better life for her son, Larry, and often finds herself making impulsive and immature decisions. The program is a fresh, raw, and honest comedic look at co-parenting, motherhood and female sexuality. "SMILF" is adapted from Frankie Shaw's Sundance Film Festival Jury award-winning short film. Sunday, 11/12:No Activity (s1, 1, total, CBS All Access; from the Funny or Die team)No Activity is an Australian comedy television series which screens on Stan. The series is about two detectives on a stakeout. The Australian series was the first commission produced for the Australian streaming service. Monday, 11/13:Ill Behavior (s1, 1, 6 total, Showtime)Typical family man Charlie is young, healthy, and in the prime of his life. That is, until he's diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. Although the cancer is still in the early stages and the prognosis looks good, Charlie chooses to forego medical treatment in favor of natural remedies instead, much to the dismay of his friends, Joel, Tess and Nadia. Rather than allow their friend's suspicion of modern medicine to sign his death certificate for him, Joel, Tess and Nadia opt to rent an old mansion, kidnap Charlie, and treat him with regular chemotherapy drugs against his will. Tuesday, 11/14:Future Man (s1, 1, all 13 total, Hulu)Janitor Josh Futturman leads a pretty boring life, spending much of his time playing video games when he's not working. Things change, though, when he beats a video game that the rest of the world has given up on, thinking it was unbeatable. After he defeats the game, mysterious visitors from the future appear. They put the world in danger, and Josh is the only person who can save it. He assembles a team to assist him as he travels through time, completing various missions as he does whatever he can to try to save Earth from the extraterrestrial visitors. Thursday, 11/16:There’s … Johnny! (s1, 1, all 8 total, Hulu)It's 1972 and "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" is in the midst of its three-decade run sitting atop the late-night TV world. When 19-year-old Nebraska native Andy Klavin leaves his home state for the first time and makes his way to Burbank, Calif,. the show's famed home, he gets surprised upon stumbling his way into a job working on the show -- and for the host, his hero. This coming-of-age comedy follows the young man from the Midwest as he gets caught up in the glamorous lifestyle that abounds in Hollywood -- and the sex, drugs and rock `n' roll that are all part of show business. Actor Paul Reiser, who made several real-life appearances on Carson's "Tonight Show," helped create the series and serves as an executive producer on it. Tuesday, 11/21:Marvel's Runaways (s1, 1, 10 total, Hulu)There are times when pretty much every teenager thinks his or her parents are evil -- but what if it was actually true? That's the situation six Los Angeles teenagers find themselves in when they stumble upon a terrible secret and realize that their parents have been lying to them for their entire lives. The offspring begin an investigation to try to figure out what their guardians are after, while the adults wonder if their kids are hiding secrets of their own. The unlikely crew of teens bands together -- led by de facto leader and primary strategist Alex Wilder -- to stop their parents before it is too late. The Marvel series is from executive producer Josh Schwartz, whose resume of young-adult fare includes "The O.C." and "Gossip Girl."
