"In this business, you are out to make either perfect whiskey or a quick buck, and those end goals generally lead to wildly different places" Colin Spoelman is a former rooftop moonshiner from Kentucky who founded Kings County Distillery with David Haskell in 2010. He is co-author of 'The Guide to Urban Moonshining,' 'Dead Distillers' and the most recent 'The Bourbon Drinkers' Companion.' Colin argues American whiskey has deviated from its traditional production as more brands have entered the space. And as a result, marketing has become deceptive and the market has homogenised. In this episode, Colin gives a frank perspective on the world of American whiskey and shares his thinking behind creating the distinctive brand and packaging of their premium craft whiskey brand at Kings County, based in New York.
A PRETTY COMPLICATED ORGANISM—Like many of you, I was stunned by what happened on November 5th. It's gonna take me some time to reckon with what this all says about the values of a large portion of this country. As part of that reckoning—and for some much-needed relief—I've opted to spend less time with media in general for a bit. But on “the morning after,” I couldn't ignore an email I got from today's guest, New York magazine editor-in-chief David Haskell. [You can find it on our website].What struck me most about his note—which was sent to the magazine's million-and-a-half subscribers—was what it didn't say. There were no recriminations. Nothing about how Kamala Harris had failed to “read the room.” Not a word about Joe Biden's unwillingness to step aside when he should have. No calls to “resist.” In fact, the hometown president-elect's name went unspoken (as it is here). What Haskell did say that left a mark on me was this:“I consider our jobs as magazine journalists a privilege at times like this.” I was an editor at Clay Felker's New York magazine, the editor-in-chief of Boston magazine, and I led the creative team at Inc. magazine. And it was there, at Inc. that I had a similar experience. It was 9/11.I wrote my monthly column in the haze that immediately followed the attacks, though it wouldn't appear in print until the December issue. It was titled, “Think Small. No Smaller.” In it, I urged our community of company builders to focus their attention on the things we can control. This is how it ended:What we can say for certain is that the arena over which any of us has control has, for now, grown smaller. In these smaller arenas, the challenge is to build, or rebuild, in ourselves and our organizations the quiet confidence that we still have the ability to get the right things done. For all the attention that gets paid to EICs, most of the work you do is done through the members of your team: writers, and editors, and designers, and so many others. My friend, Dan Okrent, the former Life magazine editor and Print Is Dead guest, once said, “Magazines bring us together into real communities.”—This episode is made possible by our friends at Mountain Gazette, Commercial Type, and Freeport Press. Print Is Dead (Long Live Print!) is a production of Magazeum LLC ©2021–2024
Jacqueline Courteau, Ph.D. is an ecologist, consultant and writer. She's also a teacher of university ecology courses in the field, and focused on restoration, sense of place, natural history and environmental writing. Most recently, Jacqueline has established NatureWrite, LLC to provide ecological assessment and monitoring, and to measure forest regeneration, deer impacts on vegetation, and other interactions between plants and animals. Earlier in her career, she worked as a science and environmental policy analyst in Washington, DC contributing to an early 1990's report to Congress on how federal agencies could plan for an uncertain climateIn this episode, Mary and Jacqueline consider plant ecology, medicinal plants and love - all in exploration of avenues into climate repair. You can learn more about Jacqueline by checking out her articles in Feb/Mar and Apr/May issues of Rural Heritage magazine where she offers a two-part series on herbal remedies. Throughout our talk, Jacqueline continued to call our attention back to relationship with nature - no matter the ecosystem and no matter how urban. Her contention is that paying attention in this way helps us rediscover the love we have for the natural world - a world of which we are and have always been a part.Jacqueline also mentioned these resources including books on observing plant life, and apps for Citizen Science. Lindsay Peoples is the editor-in-chief of The Cut. “You see so many incredible people make one mistake and lose their job or they speak out about something and then the next day something blows up. And so I do think that I often feel like I have to be so careful. And that's hard to do because I'm just naturally curious and I want to know and I want to find and explore and do the things. But I'm aware that … people think I'm too young. I'm too Black. On the 67th episode of the What is a Good Life? podcast, I am delighted to introduce our guest, David Haskell. David is a writer and a biologist. His latest book, Sounds Wild and Broken, is a finalist for the 2023 Pulitzer Prize in Nonfiction. His previous books, The Forest Unseen and The Songs of Trees are acclaimed for their integration of science, poetry, and rich attention to the living world. Among their honours include the National Academies' Best Book Award, John Burroughs Medal, finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and many more. He is a Guggenheim Fellow and Professor at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. In this captivating episode, David shares his journey of celebrating all living life, experiencing life as much through his senses as possible, while becoming aware of the connections between himself and whatever he is engaging with, and the multiplicity of connections that exist behind that. Throughout this conversation, he impresses the importance of experiencing real life beyond the screens we often stare at for much of the day, and seeing life as it truly is, whether pleasant or not. He also suggests the importance of stepping out of ourselves to become more in tune with how we perceive and connect with other life forms. This episode will give you much to contemplate regarding how, where, and with what we spend our time, how we sense life, the importance of not always putting humans at the centre of the universe, and the humility and changes that can occur within us when making that shift.Subscribe for weekly episodes, every Tuesday, and check out my YouTube channel (link below) for clips and shorts. For further content and information check out the following:- David's latest book: Sounds Wild and Broken- David's Website: https://dghaskell.com/- For the podcast's YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/@whatisagoodlife/videos- My newsletter: https://www.whatisagood.life/- My LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-mccartney-14b0161b4/Contact me at mark@whatisagood.life to book a free consultation (30 minutes) for one-on-one coaching programs, leadership coaching programs to build trust and connection amongst executive teams or silent retreats for executive teams.Running Order:02:45 Podcast begins03:05 Celebrating all living life07:40 Echoes and connections with the past and creativity11:45 Being in touch with the real world not our screens18:05 Anxiety levels increasing with the youth20:20 Coming back to our senses and curiosity of connection24:35 Ambiguity of simultaneous beauty and brokenness29:35 The rewiring of us as we engage with nature33:06 Resistance to the open ended nature of change38:35 Developing empathy with our environment & other beings42:35 Interconnection not individuality50:15 Realising once more how essential relationships are55:30 What is a good life for David?
On April 5, 2024, at St. Paul's, St. Peter's Church, in Ottawa an audience of over seventy people came out to hear first hand a spirited debate over virtue vs. freedom. Dr. David Haskell advocated for a virtuous government to lead the country back to a traditional view of “conservative.” Haskell noted in his opening statement, Thus, liberty is a core characteristic of the conservatism I'm describing. And while conservatives in the Anglo-speaking countries are fierce defenders of freedom, they are guided by their religious tradition to balance their love of personal liberty with duty to family and duty to their nation. So with all this in mind, I'll wrap up my definition of conservatism as a political philosophy. A government that leads according to conservative ideals will focus on the promotion of freedom, but it will be tempered bytraditions of faith, protection of family, and the success of the nation. And this needs to be said.A conservative does not need to be religious, though many are, but they must support the virtues of the Judeo-Christian tradition because they recognize that they lead to the greatest societal success. Law Professor Bruce Pardy took the position of the “Classical Liberal” – noting that David Haskell is one of the best human beings that I know. He has made himself a servant of God, of his family, of his community, of this country. But Dave is also a conservative. And many conservatives carrysomething dark inside their hearts. And that is this. The conviction that everyone must live like them. We agree, the two of us, about a great many things. But we don't agree about this. And as Dave suggested, this may be the thing upon which the fight turns. Because there are these two forces working together to try and resist the woke, to try to resist the dissolving of Western Civilization. If you give somebody control, they have control over what happens. And that's the way government works. If government is going to foster a virtuous society, it's going to foster a virtuous society that it thinks is virtuous. And that's what it has been doing. As Thomas Sowell said, the most basic question is not what shall be done, But who decides what shall be done? Dave's answer is the government. And my answer is you. You shall decide what happens in your life and how you choose to behave.

Music Biz 101 & More is the only radio show in America that focuses on the business side of the music & entertainment worlds. Hosted by William Paterson University's Dr. Stephen Marcone & Professor David Kirk Philp, the show airs live each Wednesday at 11pm on WPSC-FM, Brave New Radio. In this episode, you'll hear an amazing interview with David Haskell, who's a big, fancy human at Gateway Studios, a facility near St. Louis that provides touring artists with practice facilities before going on the road. Now, these artists are not the garage band, the band that gets read for show's in Mom & Dad's basement. Gateway is gigantic and exists for the club artist, the arena artist, the stadium artist. The discussion delves deep into the production of a show, how stadium shows are "built" and organized (think of all of the trucks, the massive load in and load out)... This will be one you'll listen to a few times because it's so packed with good stuff. Intro song: "Hurts Like Hell" by Gina Royale. Exit song: "Lover" by TimaLikesMusic. Like what you hear? When the Earth Started to SingProduced by Emergence Magazine, this sonic journey written and narrated by David G. Haskell brings us to the beginning of sound and song on planet Earth. The experience is made entirely of tiny trembling waves in air, the fugitive, ephemeral energy that we call sound. Spoken words combined with terrestrial sounds invite our senses and imaginations to go outward into an experience of the living Earth and its history. How did the vast and varied chorus of modern sounds — from forest to oceans to human music — emerge from life's community? When did the living Earth first start to sing? We invite you on a journey into deep time and deep sound that will open your ears and your imagination.Find many more stories exploring the intersection between ecology, culture and spirituality at emergencemagazine.org/David Haskell's new book: Sounds Wild and Broken: Sonic Marvels, Evolution's Creativity, and the Crisis of Sensory ExtinctionCover artwork by Daniel Liévano

"Can 'Wild' Sounds Teach Us What it Means to be Human?" David Haskell | Biology & Environmental Sciences | University of the South, Sewanee, TN Presented by hosts Laura Emmery (Department of Music / Emory University) and Cynthia Willett (Department of Philosophy / Emory University) Co-sponsored by the Center for Mind, Brain, and Culture, and The Department of Psychology. "I will use examples from the history of sound on Earth to argue that the world's sonic diversity – both human and nonhuman – undermines ideas of human exceptionalism. Turning our ears toward these sounds also provides a useful foundation for ethical discernment. Listening to insects, birds, and trees, then, is a radical (from the root, radix) act because it places us in relationship with other species and with processes that transcend human concerns. We hear these connections in human sound, too, especially in instrumental music which, from the start, has been an ecologically immersive art."
Moving away from empirical evidence and instead indoctrinating students to base truth on feelings rather than facts is a dangerous game that Canada is already playing in public and post-secondary schools. Prof. David M. Haskell walks David Craig through examples of segregation, identity politics in the classroom and bold-face lies that are upheld because of widespread coercion into silence by much of society. David Haskell is a professor of biology and environmental studies at the University of the South and a Guggenheim Fellow. His 2017 book The Songs of Trees won the John Burroughs Medal for Distinguished Natural History Writing. His 2012 book The Forest Unseen was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award, and won the 2013 Best Book Award from the National Academies, the National Outdoor Book Award, and the Reed Environmental Writing Award. His new book, Sounds Wild and Broken is out now and I was thrilled to have a chance to sit down in person with him in my studio here Nashville to discuss it briefly. Here's a quick summary of the book from the official press release: Starting with the origins of animal song and traversing the whole arc of Earth history, Haskell illuminates and celebrates the emergence of the varied sounds of our world. In mammoth ivory flutes from Paleolithic caves, violins in modern concert halls, and electronic music in earbuds, we learn that human music and language belong within this story of ecology and evolution. Yet we are also destroyers, now silencing or smothering many of the sounds of the living Earth. Haskell takes us to threatened forests, noise-filled oceans, and loud city streets, and shows that sonic crises are not mere losses of sensory ornament. Sound is a generative force, and so the erasure of sonic diversity makes the world less creative, just, and beautiful. The appreciation of the beauty and brokenness of sound is therefore an important guide in today's convulsions and crises of change and inequity. Here's a link to the book in all it's various formats (the link is slow but it works) I can highly recommend you give it a read. It's just a wonderful read and full of insights that will stay with you. There's a Soundcloud link with sounds pertinent to the chapters which you can check out here ______________ I also wanted to give a shout out to pod listener Simon Taylor and his book AUDIO MASTERING IN A PROJECT STUDIO: A PRACTICAL APPROACH FOR A PROFESSIONAL SOUND Some great ideas and knowledge that's not too overwhelming check these whee links: US Or UK ______________ As always send music and stuff to lidellmakeswaves@gmail.com :)

Join Ellen and Jennifer and making her debut as their 3rd co host is tiny human Kaeda! You have been warned now that there will be some cute baby noises in this episode! They will be chatting all about the book: The Forest Unseen by David George Haskell ⭐Why Stories From the Earth? Humankind's relationship to the natural world is as diverse and dynamic as each individual plant, animal, mineral, and piece of geography. There are many ways that we can engage with our living planet, be it through herbalism, gardening, hiking and other explorations, meditation and observation, and even artistic expressions. There are many ways for us to connect, and it is important to do so, as the human species is not a separate entity from the whole web of life. Each takes their own path. This series explores some of the many ways in which people may weave a tapestry of meaning in coexistence and mutuality with what surrounds us, these are Stories From the Earth. ⭐From the cover: Visiting a one square meter patch of old growth Tennessee forest almost daily for 1 year, biologist David Haskell traces nature's oath through the seasons and brings the forest and it's inhabitants to vivid life. Beginning with simple observations - a salamander scuttling across the leaf litter; the first blossom of spring wildflowers - Haskell spins a brilliant web of biology, ecology, and poetry. He explains the science that binds together the tiniest microbes in the largest mammals, and describes the ecosystems that have cycled for thousands - sometimes millions - of years. Written with remarkable grace and empathy, The Forest Unseen is a grand tour of nature and all its beauty and complexity. ⭐As mentioned in the Podcast Fall of Civilizations https://www.youtube.com/@FallofCivilizations ⭐The Unruly Podcast https://soundcloud.com/unrulystories/ren-hurst

We live on a planet alive with song, music, and speech. David Haskell explores how these wonders came to be. In rain forests shimmering with insect sound and swamps pulsing with frog calls we learn about evolution's creative powers. From birds in the Rocky Mountains and on the streets of Paris, we discover how animals learn their songs and adapt to new environments. Below the waves, we hear our kinship to beings as different as snapping shrimp, toadfish, and whales. In the startlingly divergent sonic vibes of the animals of different continents, we experience the legacies of plate tectonics, the deep history of animal groups and their movements around the world, and the quirks of aesthetic evolution. We join American biologist and writer David Haskell on a sonic journey, back to the first sounds made on Earth. David's latest book is "Sounds Wild and Broken," a lyrical exploration of the diverse sounds of our planet and the perils that sonic diversity now faces. It's an exquisite lens through which to think about our relationships with the living world, and how we can enter more fully into a conversation that is always waiting for us. David is a professor of biology and environmental studies at the University of the South in Tennessee, and author of the widely-acclaimed book "The Song of Trees." He spoke with Nathan in March 2022.
When we open our ears to the marvels of natural soundscapes, we experience the energies of the world in a unique way—and begin to understand the mysteries behind them. But when we habitually ignore what we're hearing, we both miss out on one of the best parts of being human and enable the loss of an enormous diversity of species on this planet. So argues biologist and acclaimed author David Haskell in his new book, Sounds Wild and Broken. Considered by many as the premier nature writer in America today, Haskell believes that one of the most important things we can do to heal the earth is remember how to listen. In this episode, Haskell walks us through the rich history of sound and offers a powerful lesson in sonic awareness. This episode is brought to you by Outside Learn, a new online education hub loaded with instructional courses guided by best-in-class experts, like climber-filmmaker Jimmy Chin. Our world constantly vibrates with sound, from the delicate flap of an insect's wings to the thunderous roar of a rocket launching into space. There's the spring chorus of frogs. The sputter of a creek and the whoosh of a sudden breeze. Songs, music, and speech. But the sounds of today aren't necessarily the same sounds that our ancestors encountered. How have sounds changed? What might be missing from our present and future sonic experiences? In his new book, Sounds Wild and Broken, biology professor David Haskell explored how the wonders of sound came to be on a journey through our planet's history. Tracing a sonic path from animal song to modern concert halls, he illuminated how sounds emerged and evolved alongside all of Earth's living things. But despite the explosive creation of sounds over time, Haskell pointed out that there is also erasure; threats to sonic diversity impact our forests, oceans, and experiences as human beings. Haskell considered how the loss of sounds can make the world less creative, just, and beautiful, prompting the question: How can reverence for sound help guide us in a rapidly-changing world? David Haskell is a professor of biology and environmental studies at the University of the South and a Guggenheim Fellow. His work integrates scientific, literary, and contemplative studies of the natural world. He is the author of The Songs of Trees (2017), which won the John Burroughs Medal for Outstanding Nature Writing. His first book, The Forest Unseen (2012), was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the PEN/E.O. Wilfred Laurier University professor David Haskell speaks to Alex about the importance of free speech on Canadian campuses.
While conducting a rather mind-blowing interview with Dr. David Haskell, we became just as interested in the creative process that led a biologist to be nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Not only does David believe that writing is applicable to his theory that life is a system networks, but that communication, whether in language or in art, is one of the very networks that comprise the human experience. If you have not yet listened to Episode 6 "Life Is Connection", make sure you do so before listening to this fantastic piece of tape. Thanks and enjoy. Pulitzer Prize nominated author and biologist Dr. David Haskell is an observer of life, and life, according to him, is inextricable from the networks that exist both within it and around the living object. Join us as we travel with David to two extremes: an old-growth forest in the mountains of Tennessee, and the streets of New York City. In both places we visit a singular hub which most of us take for granted on a daily basis: a tree. One "dead" and the other is "alive". But in both places, you will see, as we did, that both trees are robust with such a dizzying array of networks that it leads us down a path of reconsidering the very idea of life itself... including our own. We highly recommend both of David's books "The Songs of Trees" and "The Forest Unseen".
