What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Friday I chatted with filmmaker Clarke Wolfe about her short film “A Shining Example” (a darkly comic tribute to The Shining) that she brought to Sherman Oaks Film Festival 2024 and pulled in a pair of awards for; the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Writing, Horror and “Programmer's Prize for Exceptional Filmmaking.” Clarke directed, co-wrote and played the lead character in the film. I was not able to moderate Clarke's Q&A so I was thrilled to chat with her on the podcast and equally eager to follow up with the 4 Questions! _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Discover Indie Film Website – Instagram – Facebook – X/Twitter The INDIE Channel The INDIE Channel Website – Instagram – Facebook – X/Twitter – TikTok
Happy Friday, Everyone! Filmmaker Clarke Wolfe brought her short film “A Shining Example” to Sherman Oaks Film Festival 2024 and pulled in a pair of awards; the Filmmakers Award, chosen by our jury that is entirely made up of alumni, gave Clarke and co-writer Dylan Guerra the award for Outstanding Writing, Horror and a jury of one gave the film what we call, “Programmer's Prize for Exceptional Filmmaking.” Don't come at me too hard for saying this, but this darkly comic tribute to The Shining is, for me, better than the original book or film because the perspective is fresh and authentic. Clarke directed, co-wrote and played the lead character in the film. Much to my chagrin, “A Shining Example” played in the theater where I was not moderating Q&A's, an unfortunate fact that kept me from praising Clarke's work in front of an audience. Happily Clarke is among the first to hop onto the Discover Indie Film podcast after SOFF 2024, which made e feel a lot better that I was in the theater next door during her Q&A. This was one of my favorite conversations over the last year or so. Figured it'd be nice to share it again... We are joined in this episode by Writer, Producer, Actor and Mentor, LARRY WILMORE! We discussed what drew Larry to comedy, writing, acting and producing; and, yes, we did talk about the WGA strike; why, as a kid, he was compelled by the work of such greats as Houdini, Buster Keaton, the Marx Brothers and Flip Wilson; rebounding from professional setbacks and keeping a healthy mindset; his thoughts on the "TP&R question" - how to be better at talking about politics and religion across our differences; and we got pretty deep with the concept of consciousness, meaning and why humans have a desire to have a life of meaning. Emmy Award winner Larry Wilmore is a prolific producer, actor, comedian, and writer. He is also the host of the excellent podcast Larry Wilmore: Black on the Air. Larry is perhaps best known for his role as host of Comedy Central's The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore and as the “Senior Black Correspondent” on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Off-screen, Larry serves as co-creator and consulting producer on HBO's Insecure, and helped to launch ABC's black-ish as an executive producer and is a co-creator of the spin-off Grownish. Previously, he has written for In Living Color, The PJ's (which he co-created), The Office (on which he also appeared), and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He also served as creator, writer, and executive producer of The Bernie Mac Show, which earned him his Emmy for “Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series” and a 2001 Peabody Award. Joining host Michael Azevedo on this episode is Michelle Ferrari, an award winning documentary filmmaker whose latest film “The American Vice-President” will debut on PBS' American Experience series on October 1. The film explores the little-known story of the second-highest office in the land, tracing its evolution from a constitutional afterthought to its current position of enormous political consequence. Focusing on the fraught period between 1963 and 1974, when a grief-stricken and then scandal-plagued America was forced to clarify the role of the vice president, the film examines the passage and first uses of the 25th Amendment and offers a fresh and surprising perspective on succession in the executive branch. Michelle Ferrari (Director/Writer/Producer) has been creating innovative, critically acclaimed documentary narratives for more than two decades. Her work as a screenwriter and story editor has been seen on PBS, HBO, and at film festivals nationwide, and has garnered honors from the Writers Guild of America, the Western Writers Association, the Organization of American Historians, the Sundance Film Festival, and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The writer of numerous AMERICAN EXPERIENCE films –– among them The Perfect Crime, Silicon Valley, Roads to Memphis, and Kit Carson –– Ferrari is perhaps best known for the highly rated Seabiscuit, which earned her a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing. “Oh god, you're crying in front of Carol Burnett, fantastic,” Alex Edelman said at the top of his acceptance speech for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special at the 76th Emmy Awards. It was just the latest unexpected milestone in the life of his widely celebrated solo show ‘Just for Us,' which premiered on HBO and also won a special Tony Award earlier this year. In this episode, the 35-year-old Jewish comic shares the unique challenges of bringing his story about attending a white supremacist meeting in Queens to the stage and screen, including the sudden death of his director just before opening on Broadway and how performing a show about antisemitism changed after October 7th. Edelman also discusses the surreal experience of getting notes from comedy heroes like Steve Martin, Jerry Seinfeld and Billy Crystal, tells a story about the time he baffled Mel Brooks by calling him “woke” to his face, and teases his next stand-up hour, which will take on the Israel-Gaza war. Meredith Scardino is the creator and showrunner of the Netflix TV series Girls5eva. Born and raised outside of Philadelphia, from a young age, Meredith was encouraged by her parents to pursue all types of art, and tried everything from cartooning classes (and watching Saturday Night Live) to painting classes in high school. She earned a bachelors degree in fine arts from Cornell before moving to New York City to pursue a masters in painting from the Parsons School of Design. There, her world opened up, as she took improv classes and writing electives at Parsons alongside her painting classwork. Scardino then landed a job creating animated comedy shorts, which combined her love for painting with her growing talent for comedy writing. Soon, she decided she wanted to pursue comedy writing full-time and quickly landed a writing gig at VH1's Best Week Ever. Stints at the Late Show With David Letterman and The Colbert Report followed before she jumped into narrative TV by working on The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. In 2021, she created her own show, Girls5eva, about a one-hit-wonder girl group that gets a chance at redemption decades after their initial fame. This year, she's nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Almost all the characters [in Fallout, the TV show] are brand new… We really took the world of Fallout that had been built up and iterated upon by other video game writers over the years and we wanted to do our own version of it rather than retell any version that someone else has already done. Our attitude was like, ‘Okay, let's say this is a new Fallout game. What would it be?' So, we took the world, the background, the themes of the games and the tone. It's a new story. New people,” says Graham Wagner, co-creator and showrunner of Fallout on Amazon Prime. In this episode of the Final Draft's Write On Podcast, I talk with Graham Wagner about Fallout, a show based on the beloved videogame, that's earned 17 Emmy nominations including Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. Wagner talks about taking the structure and tone from Sergio Leone's Western, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, and focusing on three central figures: Lucy (Ella Purnell), The Ghoul (Walton Goggins) and Maximus (Aaron Moten), and intertwining their disparate storylines. “We made an intentional collision of genres because Walton Goggins' character is very much of the wasteland of the Western genre, which is sort of apocalyptic in its own way, depending on your perspective. There isn't the infrastructure and people are trying to build civilization on the ashes of the civilization that has been eradicated before them. You know there's a lot of parallels there,” says Wagner. To learn more about the show Fallout and hear Wagner's advice for writing TV pilots, listen to the podcast.
When a special arrives on Netflix in its finished form, viewers don't typically get to see all of the excruciating work that went into making it a polished piece. But for anyone who has been listening to Birbiglia's Working It Out podcast over the past couple of years, it's all there. “I was doing it privately,” he says on this week's episode of The Last Laugh podcast. “I feel like it's something that's kind of unspoken about stand-up, that for the most part, we are in communities of comedians who kick around joke tags: ‘Hey, what if you did this with it?' And ‘I have a similar story about this, and you know you could use that if you want to,' or whatever it is. And we kind of just put it out there with audio rolling.” In his second appearance on The Last Laugh, Birbiglia talks about how this process helped shape his latest Broadway show-turned-Netflix special ‘The Old Man and the Pool' (now Emmy-nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special), shares his thoughtful response to the “emotional truth” controversy that came for his friend and fellow comic Hasan Minhaj, breaks down how he handles criticism of his own work, and a lot more. fWotD Episode 2406: Janet(s) Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Wednesday, 6 December 2023 is Janet(s)."Janet(s)" is the tenth episode of the third season of the American fantasy-comedy television series The Good Place. The thirty-sixth episode of the series overall, it originally aired in the United States on NBC on December 6, 2018, as the show's mid-season finale. "Janet(s)" was written by Josh Siegal and Dylan Morgan and was directed by Morgan Sackett. After rediscovering the afterlife earlier in the season, Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason help others on Earth alongside afterlife architect Michael and assistant Janet. In the episode, the four humans find themselves transformed into versions of Janet as they seek to escape demons from the Bad Place. Eleanor tries to address her romantic feelings for Chidi and has an identity crisis when he denies any feelings for her. Meanwhile, Michael and Janet visit Accounting, the section of the afterlife that calculates point totals for people's good and bad actions during their lives, to determine if the Bad Place is manipulating the points system. The premise of the episode originated during production of the show's second season, and the writers studied concepts of identity and the self for the episode. D'Arcy Carden, who plays multiple versions of Janet in the episode, prepared for her role by watching rehearsals of her castmates and following the actors between scenes. Filming took place in July 2018 and required significantly more visual effects than normal; several crew members wondered during production if the finished product would make sense.Seen by 2.58 million viewers in its original broadcast, "Janet(s)" received praise from critics; Carden's performance earned widespread acclaim. It was ranked as one of 2018's best television episodes by many publications. Analysis of the episode has focused on its discussion of the meaning of the self, as well as why nobody had reached the Good Place in over five centuries. The episode won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form, and Siegal and Morgan were nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for their work on the episode. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:25 UTC on Wednesday, 6 December 2023.For the full current version of the article, see Janet(s) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Stephen Neural.

This week, twice Emmy-nominated producer Nicholas Hatton joins Jessica Kantor on Raising Cinephiles. We discussed how everyone creating Jury Duty was treated with care. And. He hopes to continue to make films and television with that idea in mind. We also discussed how he wants to pass on. The joy he gets from experiencing cinema and television and to his daughter. Nicholas Hatton previously worked with Sacha Baron Cohen as a producer of 2020's smash hit, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, and on the Who Is America? Showtime series, for which Hatton received an Emmy nom. While Ronald Gladden is the true star of Jury Duty, the meticulous planning and remarkable behind-the-scenes production is what allowed Hatton and his fellow producers to pull off the well-intentioned ruse. Hatton worked with the team to conceive the set-up, plan out the day-by-day of the “case,” and cast the talented actors. He was on set every day, becoming Ronald's daily “constant” and “confidante” who Ronald believed was a courthouse security guard. Trust was developed in this daily touch point between Ronald and Nick that truly allowed the production to go off without a hitch.Jury Duty was released on Freevee in April 2023. Part documentary, part sitcom, Jury Duty has received critical acclaim and commercial success and was recently nominated for four Emmys: Outstanding Comedy Series (Nicholas Hatton is one of the nominees), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (James Marsden), Outstanding Casting for Comedy Series (Susie Faris) and Outstanding Writing for Comedy Series (Mekki Leeper).Movie Discussed:All Dogs Go to HeavenRobin Hood Prince of ThievesPredatorDeath Becomes HerThe BurbsBigHot FuzzJawsThe AntmanBarbie New Episodes Every Wednesday!EPISODE CREDITS:Host, Producer, Editor: Jessica KantorBooker: Noelia MurphyBe sure to follow and tag Raising Cinephiles on Instagram

Larry is perhaps best known for his role as host of Comedy Central's The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore and as the “Senior Black Correspondent” on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
