“Little Mary, Big Faith”   Scripture: Luke 1:26-38https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke%201:26-38 What do you know about Mary? What does our text today teach us about Mary as a person and why in the world did God choose Mary out of all of the other women that God could have chosen to be the mother of Jesus? What can we learn about Mary and about her faith for our lives today? According to v. 26, we know that Mary lived in the town of Nazareth in Galilee. Nazareth was an insignificant little town whose population is estimated to have been between one hundred and four hundred people. People who lived in Nazareth were mostly peasants, farmers, laborers and shepherds who made their living by selling their goods and services to the people who lived in a larger and much more affluent city called Sepphoris, which was only couple of miles from Nazareth. Mary was most likely uneducated and probably came from a poor family who may well have been servants in a household in Sepphoris. When the angel Gabriel came to Mary, Biblical scholars estimate Mary's age to be between 13 and 16 years old. At the time, she was already engaged to be married to Joseph. Although we may find it strange today to see a girl of 13 years of age engaged for marriage, it was a common practice in those days for young girls to marry early. It is because most people didn’t go to school in those days and girls were considered to have become women soon after they had their first menstrual period and that the average life expectancy at the time was less than 35 years. So why in the world did God choose a peasant girl like Mary to be the bearer of the promised Messiah? What qualification does she have to carry out such an awesome and important task on which the destiny of humankind depends? In today's term, Mary has no resume whatsoever to speak of to be qualified for such an important position and task. Ultimately, we can never know exactly why God chose Mary to be the bearer and nurturer of the promised Messiah since God's ways are often different from our ways. Even though we can never know why God chose Mary to serve as the mother of Jesus in this world, we can get a glimpse of the kind of person of faith Mary was that may have prompted God to choose her for the awesome task. The Rabbis teach the following about the Messiah: *Light dwells within the Kingly Messiah *Messiah is the “one who breaks through”. He is the “breaker” (Micah 2:12-13) *Messiah has healing in His wings (Malachi 4:2) *Messiah will teach the Torah at the deeper sod level. This is the HEART of the Torah. *Messiah will be considered a teacher of Torah or a Rabbi. *Messiah will seek the lost sheep of Israel who have strayed away. What are the rabbi’s expectations for the Messiah? What is it that they are looking for? What is the New Testament application and fulfillment of these Rabbinic expectations of the Messiah? In this session, we learn that the rabbis believe the following about the Messiah: *The light dwells with the Kingly Messiah We see that Yeshua is LIGHT: Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8:12 We see that the Torah is LIGHT: For the commandment is a lamp; and the Torah is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life. Proverbs 6:23 Jewish rabbinic sources also believe that the Messiah is the “one who breaks through”. He is the “breaker”, or the “parats”. I will surely assemble, O Jacob, all of thee; I will surely gather the remnant of Israel; I will put them together as the sheep of Bozrah, as the flock in the midst of their fold: they shall make great noise by reason of the multitude of men. The breaker is come up before them: they have broken up, and have passed through the gate, and are gone out by it: and their king shall pass before them, and the LORD on the head of them. Micah 2:12-13 This is the task of the Messiah. To break through barriers. Barriers of exile. Barriers between Northern kingdom and Southern kingdom. In Hebraic thought, the breaker and the king are two different people with two different roles. The breaker comes to prepare the way for the King. He opens the sheep pen gate, the sheep are loosed and then the KING leads them on their journey! What is the rabbinic expectation of Messiah? What do they look for in Messiah? In Jewish thought, the Messiah is likened unto Moses. His life is a foreshadow and a prophecy of the Messiah to come. Therefore, when we look at, seek for and identify who the Messiah is, he must be like Moses, and be greater than Moses. There are parallels between Moses and Yeshua. In this session, we look at what those parallels are. Moses performed signs and miracles on behalf of the children of Israel. Yeshua, in His ministry, also performed signs and miracles on behalf of the people. Moses lifted up His rod, and showed dominion over the Red Sea and the Red Sea parted for the children of Israel. Similarly, Yeshua demonstrated dominion over the sea when he walked on the water (John 6:18-2). This is spiritually significant. The sea is seen to be the habitat/dominion of HaSatan, the serpent, or leviathan. When both Moses and Yeshua show dominion over the sea, it is showing dominion over the kingdom of darkness and HaSatan. Here is a Key Torah principle: Moses is the FIRST redeemer and Messiah is the LAST redeemer. Messiah does the works of Moses but on a GREATER scale. It would be absurd to believe the Yeshua died on the tree to do away with the Torah of Moses. What are the rabbi’s expectations for the Messiah? What is it that they are looking for?They expect the Messiah to be a Judge, a Savior and a King. In the book of Judges, the children of Israel fall away from the Torah. They would then come under oppressive kings. They would then cry out for deliverance. The Lord would hear their cry and raise up Judges to deliver them. These saviors had the characteristics of Moses. Yeshua is our judge. Yeshua is also our Savior. The God of our fathers raised up Yeshua, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Savior, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. Acts 5:30-31 In Jewish thought, the rabbis understand that the term, “son of David” is a term for the Messiah. They believe that King David is a “type” of the Messiah. He is regarded as the “ideal” king of Israel. The “son of David” is a title for the Messiah. And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. Matthew 21:9 The Good shepherd, who is Messiah Yeshua, is going to rule and reign over the nation of Israel, who are likened unto sheep. They were divided into Northern Kingdom and Southern Kingdom. Yeshua, the “Son of David”, will rule and reign over a United kingdom, even as King David ruled over a United kingdom. I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.
