Orbital Resonance (2015) / Kyle Gann. Tres pianos Disklaviers. Check out this conversation with Aaron Myers-Brooks, Pittsburgh prog guitarist/composer extraordinaire. His latest album, “Oblique,” is a microtonal odyssey exploring various quirky polyrhythms, applications of 17-tone equal temperament, electronic sounds, and distortion flavors. We get an inside exclusive look at the scores to “Energy Shapes”, figure out why one might use up and down arrows instead of Gould accidentals, and talk about “drawing” microtones in the highC program. In this podcast I chat with Frank about two pieces of his and about the use of microtones (smaller subdivisions of the scale than half tones) in his music, with digressions into how the tuning system of Western music evolved and his personal use of musical concepts of the XX century like serialism and minimalism. (Serialism - a compositional technique in which a fixed series of notes, especially the twelve notes of the chromatic scale, are used to generate the harmonic and melodic basis of a piece and are subject to change only in specific ways.) ( (Minimalism - a reductive style or school of modern music utilizing only simple sonorities, rhythms, and patterns, with minimal embellishment or orchestrational complexity, and characterized by protracted repetition of figurations, obsessive structural rigor, and often a pulsing, hypnotic effect.) --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sergio-barer/support
We talk with multimedia composer Hunter Ewen about what it’s like to be alive in the 21st century. Microtonality has lots of potential to be used as a temporal flag, to highlight a sense of off-ness, and to expand the sonic world which we inhabit. We also answer questions such as: how does the presentation of music, and/or extra-musical factors, affect the way we perceive it? And just how many times can we mention John Cage in a single episode? What instruments are good for playing microtonal music and why? Can synthesizers be a useful tool for exploring xenharmonics? And what microtonal scales would be good for beginners to start experimenting? Other topics include: collecting musical instruments, kalimbas and mavila temperament, how well instruments can keep their tuning, hammered dulcimer tuning, building your own instruments (Kraig Grady, Harry Partch etc.), the importance of microtonal guitars, fretless vs microtonal frets, fixed-pitch vs free-pitch, rearranging keyboard layouts, microtonal approaches to orchestral instruments, multiphonics, free synths that support microtuning, using multiple synths vs using only one powerhouse synth, tuning files, tuning software (Scala, Scale Workshop, Tonescape, alt-tuner and others), re-tuning just intonation on the fly using alt-tuner, showing love to developers who support microtonal scales (Pianoteq, Dorico, etc.), and microtonal notation. SEVISH and Stephen also each pick their favorite “top 5” tunings for beginners, discussing notation, performance, chains of fifths, and the harmonic series. We mention several 20th century composers in today's episode and yet, surprisingly, none of them were La Monte Young. Honestly, how Paws Inc. managed to stay in business after being vigorously sued by Young following the publication of today's strip is anybody's guess. Eh whatever.
