The Marsh Harrier is part of a series commissioned by Future Places Centre at Lancaster University in collaboration with Leighton Moss RSPB. With many thanks to Joseph Klein, RSPB Leighton Moss, for embodying this Marsh Harrier. "I really enjoy just watching them over the nature reserve. I think Marsh Harriers have a kind of slow pace to them. They fly super slowly and just drop down into the reed bed and look so chilled and in control. And unless you come to a reserve or a place where there are Marsh Harriers, you probably don't really see them and don't know much about them, and I think, more should be known about them, because they're so cool." Joe Klein, RSPB Leighton Moss Producer, Presenter: annabel@annabelross.com Thank you to Simon Elliott for the beautiful sound of The Marsh Harrier. Thank you to Noemie Lina for the illustrations.

From a kid watching F-16s in Albuquerque to flying the legendary AV-8B Harrier, Warren's journey into Marine Corps aviation is packed with twists, challenges, and near-disasters. It all started with a recruiter's dare and his mother's skepticism—fueling his path from Navy ROTC to the cockpit of one of the most unique aircraft in military aviation. But the road to the sky wasn't easy. Warren overcame a broken leg in flight school, a last-minute major change, and grueling combat missions over Iraq and Afghanistan. He pulls back the curtain on white-knuckle night sorties, navigating strict rules of engagement, and managing fuel over hostile terrain—where a single mistake could mean disaster. Then there's the moment that gives this episode its title: a functional check flight gone horribly wrong. At 18,000 feet, Warren found himself in an uncontrolled spin… with no engine. How did he survive? You'll have to listen to find out. This episode is loaded with hidden gems—including a jaw-dropping story of rebuilding Harrier engines in record time after catastrophic water contamination in Afghanistan. And when you're done here - go to our GiveAway page to enter to win one of 5 custom engraved flasks with your name or callsign etched on it!
This week's episode is the twisty story of what is considered to be the greatest photo ever taken of a UFO...In August 1990, two men hiking near the Scottish hamlet of Calvine saw a strange craft hover silently in the sky, be approached by a Harrier jet and then fly away vertically. Stranger than this sighting, though, is the story of the photograph they took and why it wasn't seen for almost 30 years...Also includes a bit of extra chat about the Loch Ness Monster and, of course, Jurassic Park.______An exclusive extended version of this episode with almost 20 minutes of extra chat can be found over at our Patreon!Extended episodes drop over there 3 days early so if you enjoy Mystery on the Rocks then please consider heading over there to support us, where there is already a huge backlog of exclusive extras such as extended episodes, bonus episodes, minisodes, outtakes, cocktail recipes and more!Hosted by Masud Milas, Chris Stokes, and Sooz Kempner Mystery on the Rocks is a high concept comedy and true crime/unexplained phenomena podcast set in a fictional mystery-solving bar with real cocktails!. It's time to find the President by using a microphone to hear someone's pacer! This week sees Jared, Ky, and Ben continue their journey through the wacky, weird, and wonderful world of Metal Gear Solid 2. In this episode the boys track down the President of the United States, by following the sound of a pacemaker! From here we get more plot twists and turns, learn the truths about some allies, and fight a Harrier jet! Episodes of this podcast go up every Tuesday at 9 am PST Intro and outro music is done by https://boqeh.bandcamp.com Music: Vamp (MGS2)
On his way to rescue President Johnson, Raiden is confronted by the terrorist commander, who claims to be Solid Snake. Enraged by this, Pliskin reveals himself as the true Solid Snake and fires on the imposter from a helicopter. Utilizing an advanced exoskeleton, the terrorist leader evades Snake's attack and boards a Harrier being piloted by Vamp. Snake then tells Raiden to shoot it down, throwing a Stinger missile launcher down to him. After Raiden takes it down, the Harrier plummets, only to be caught by Metal Gear RAY. RAY proceeds to launch missiles into the air, destroying sections of the Big Shell and damaging the Kasatka, forcing it to land. RAY then departs into the ocean, taking the Harrier with it. After recovering from RAY's attack, Solid Snake contacts Raiden, introducing him to Otacon. They reveal they are there to stop the terrorists from using the new Metal Gear prototype. They also tell Raiden that Otacon has another reason for being in the Big Shell: to rescue his sister, Emma Emmerich. Raiden then proceeds to rendezvous and rescue President Johnson. Once Raiden finally gets to the President, he is told about the Patriots, a mysterious organization that secretly rules over America. He also explains that the terrorist leader was his predecessor, the 43rd U.S. President George Sears, known by the codename Solidus Snake, a clone of the legendary soldier Big Boss, created in the "Les Enfants Terribles" project. Johnson adds that Solidus orchestrated the Shadow Moses Incident in 2005 but was removed from office by the Patriots. Solidus wanted to challenge the Patriots, unlike Johnson, who had simply wished to become one of them. Johnson also confirms that the Big Shell is merely a cover-up for the construction of Arsenal Gear, a gigantic mobile fortress that employs mass-produced unmanned Metal Gear RAYs to defend itself and can fire nuclear warheads from anywhere on the planet. It also has access to the Military's Tactical Network, granting it absolute control over the nation's armed forces and nuclear arsenal. However, Arsenal's true purpose is to filter information from the internet and other forms of digital communication using an AI called GW. By doing this, the Patriots hope to shape history as they see fit while maintaining the secret of their existence. Johnson's last request is that Raiden locate GW's main programmer, Emma Emmerich, and provide her with a computer worm to eradicate the AI. Afterward, feeling he has said everything he needed to, Johnson suddenly grabs Raiden's gun, asking Raiden to kill him. Raiden resists, but Revolver Ocelot soon intervenes, shooting Johnson before Raiden can stop him.
Lead Balloon - Public Relations, Marketing and Strategic Communications Disaster Stories
At the height of the Cola Wars in the mid-90's, Pepsi committed one of the most notorious PR and marketing fiascos of all-time. An eye-catching spot promised brand fans that, if they saved up 7 million Pepsi Points, they could win a Harrier fighter jet. However, no one at Pepsi or their ad agency ever expected anyone to try to claim that prize. And when Washington business school student John Leonard did, they faced a multi-year legal battle and a storm of negative publicity. Now, almost three decades later, another beverage company has spoofed that infamous campaign—with a twist. Canned water brand Liquid Death actually bought a jet for one lucky fan to win, and executed a wildly successful promotion to support the contest. So in this episode, we're talking to Liquid Death VP of Creative Andy Pearson about the logistics of making that happen. We discuss Liquid Death's unique approach to marketing, his creative influences, and why they would even want to try to recreate the publicity stunt that lost Pepsi the Cola Wars. And with Jeff Beer from Fast Company, we explore the background and takeaway lessons of the Pepsi Harrier Jet fiasco. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this thought-provoking episode of "The Main Attraction" series, we delve into Mark Chapter 2, exploring the controversy surrounding fasting and its deeper spiritual implications. Pastor Bruce takes us through the significance of Jesus's interactions and teachings, highlighting the distinction between old practices and the new covenant brought by Christ. We reflect on Jesus's responses to the Pharisees and John the Baptist's disciples, revealing profound insights into the nature of fasting and spiritual renewal. This episode emphasizes the importance of focusing on the relationship with God over mere rituals, and how true fasting is about denying the physical to seek deeper spiritual connection. Join us as we unpack the powerful imagery and teachings of Jesus, encouraging a fresh perspective on spiritual practices and their relevance in today's world. This message challenges us to prioritize our spiritual growth and prepare for the ultimate return of Christ.
On Friday, May 17th, more than 1500 HSD students - including third-graders from sixteen elementary schools and eighth-graders from Poynter and Evergreen Middle Schools - participated in an Aerospace Career Day during the Oregon Air Show at the Hillsboro Airport. The event was co-created by HSD's Elementary Career and College Pathways and the Oregon Air Show Charitable Foundation as a way to engage students in hands-on aviation, science, and engineering activities led by pilots, aviation mechanics, and jet engine engineers. High school students in HSD's Oregon Aerospace Careers for Everyone - or O-ACE - program, along with their teacher, Sheri Brownlie, supported participants as they dove into activities like creating Harrier paper airplanes and learning about the fundamentals of flight - including how the airfoil design keeps a plane in the air. Students also had the opportunity to meet and speak with Air Force maintainers about the components of a jet engine; see and feel aviation mechanic tools, thanks to the PCC aviation program; and explore a Q-400 plane on tours hosted by Alaska/Horizon Air. Many thanks to the Oregon Air Show Charitable Foundation and to Captain Chris Barber for sponsoring and facilitating the event, in hopes that students will shoot for the stars to achieve their dreams. If you would like to connect with this vision in the future, please reach out to Elementary Career and College Pathways Teacher on Special Assignment, Raquel LemusGarcia. Our featured students are our 2024 valedictorians and salutatorians! On Tuesday, May 21st, we celebrated our eighty-three top achievers at a luncheon held at Hidden Creek Community Center. Superintendent Travis Reiman, Mayor Steve Callaway, Hillsboro Schools Foundation Executive Director Aron Carleson, Washington County Chamber of Commerce School-to-Career Director Karen Donaldson, and Board Chair Mark Watson congratulated the students on their accomplishments and encouraged them to both go off to college and have new adventures, and to consider returning here afterward to plant their roots. As is tradition, the event concluded with students sharing one piece of advice for incoming freshmen. Visit our website to read what they had to say and to see pictures from the event. In 1945 confidence in British aviation was sky-high. Yet decades later, the industry had not lived up to its potential. What happened? The years that followed the war saw the Brabazon Committee issued flawed proposals for civil aviation planning. Enforced cancellations restricted the advancement of military aircraft, compounded later on by Defence Minister Duncan Sandys abandoning aircraft to fixate solely on missiles. Commercially, Britain's small and neglected domestic market hindered the development of civilian airliners. In the production of notorious aircraft, the inauspicious Comet came from de Havilland's attempts to gain an edge over its American competitors. The iconic Harrier jump jet and an indigenous crop of helicopters were squandered, while unrealistic performance requirements brought about the cancellation of TSR2. Peter Reese explores how repeated financial crises, a lack of rigour and fatal self-satisfaction led British aviation to miss vital opportunities across this turbulent period in Britain's skies. Peter Reese wrote this lecture for the Farnborough Air Sciences Trust in 2023. The hen harrier is a bird of prey. It breeds in Eurasia. The term "hen harrier" refers to its former habit of preying on free-ranging fowl. It migrates to more southerly areas in winter.

Welcome to Top Landing Gear as we turn our attention to an airfield that is close to all of us, both emotionally and geographically: Dunsfold Aerodrome, home of the Hunter and the Harrier. It was also used as the studio and test track for BBC Top Gear (a poor man's version of Top Landing Gear - wheels instead of wings!), home to the sadly defunct annual Wings and Wheels airshow, and the base for Aviation Filming, which provides aircraft and facilities for the film and television industry, including most of the Bond films. It's run by our splendid guest, Mike Woodley.

You are listening to part 2 of my chat with Joe who joined the USAF in 1981 and was trained to fly the A10 Warthog a single-seat, twin-engine jet aircraft designed to provide close air support to ground forces by attacking tanks, armoured vehicles, and other ground targets. Part 1 is here https://coldwarconversations.com/episode305/ In 1985 Joe is sent to 92nd Tactical Fighter Squadron at RAF Bentwaters in the UK, just over 50 miles from where his father served in World War 2. His role was to fly the A10 over West Germany and attack Warsaw Pact ground forces should the Cold War turn hot. We hear about the perils of flying the A10 at only 100 feet in mist and rain, whilst navigating with a map on your knee in the days before GPS was available. Joe also recounts visiting the Inner German border and driving to his wartime target sectors to see what they looked like from the ground. He describes how they trained for landing on West German autobahns as well as their tactics against enemy aircraft. Joe also flew the Royal Air Force's VTOL fighter, the Harrier, and tells of the challenge of managing the controls and his respect for the Royal Air Force.
