Jesus points out that not all suffering or affliction is the direct result of Sin. When the disciples assumed that the man born blind was being punished because of sin…John 2-3 2 His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi (Teacher), who [a]sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but it was so that the works of God might be displayed and illustrated in him Scripture is just as clear, however, that sickness may be the direct result of sin. Because some of the Corinthian Christians had abused and unworthily participated in the Lord's Supper, Paul told them, 30 That [careless and unworthy participation] is the reason why many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep [in death] 1 Cor 11:30 Physical weakness, sickness, and even death can result from persistent sinning. When Ananias and Saphira lied to the church about the proceeds from the sale of their property, they also lied to the Holy Spirit. Their wickedness caused them to die on the spot, (Acts 5:1–11). At the end of 1Timothy we hear Paul giving some instruction to Timothy on handing a few tough situations. He reminds him to 'fight the good fight when contending with false teachers, keeping your faith - leaning completely on God and absolute trust and confidence in His guidance, and having a good conscience, for some people have rejected their moral compass and have made a shipwreck of their faith. Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander who I have handed over to Satan, so that they will be disciplined and taught not to blaspheme. - they were expelled from the safety of the church. Perhaps the man did repent. He may be the one spoken of in 2 Corinthians, whom Paul said should be forgiven and comforted and for whom they should reaffirm their love, “in order that no advantage be taken of us by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his schemes” (2:5–11). A disciplined brother is still a brother and is never to be despised, even when unrepentant (2 Thess. 3:14–15). And if he repents, he is to be forgiven and restored in love (Gal. 6:1–2). Idle words: We will be accountable for every idle/careless word. We are held accountable to our WORDS - which the bible helps us to see, are powerful! A follower of Jesus moves into obedience, forfeits the old life, moves into being transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit, move into purpose filled living with blessings and let's go of the 'worldly things'. https://biblereasons.com/idle-words/ Jesus said, “I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken” (Matthew 12:36). The KJV translates “every empty word” as “every idle word”; the ESV says, “every careless word.” The Greek phrase is rema argos, meaning “careless or inactive or unprofitable words.” In context, Jesus is contrasting the “good things” within a good person with the “evil things” in the heart of an evil person. We are admonished to make the best use of our words, because words express what is in our hearts: “The mouth speaks what the heart is full of” (Matthew 12:34). Other passages give additional insight. Ephesians 4:29 sets the standard: “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” James 3:8 advises us on how hard it is to control the tongue: “No human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.” Then in James 4:11–12, “Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?” Given the weighty consequences of our words—even our “careless” ones—we must learn to yield our body's members, including our tongues, to the control of the Holy Spirit—the only One who can tame the tongue. “Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips” (Psalm 141:3). “My life is not where I thought it would be.” Our expectations do not always line up with reality. Why haven't I experienced true and lasting transformation in my life? Summary of ColossiansThis letter is written to a young church: The Apostle Paul writes this letter from prison to a young church in the city of Colossae that they may grow in “maturity to Christ” (1:28), despite the cultural pressures that they were experiencing.Christ began a new Kingdom: The foundation for resisting cultural pressure is recognizing we have been saved from ourselves and are now citizens of a new Kingdom– established in Christ. (1:13;1:15-20;3:1)Spiritual maturity is learning to live in that new Kingdom: Paul believes that learning to live in the Kingdom of Jesus transforms every aspect of our lives.In verse 5, he outlines the first list, sins of desire. He says: “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you:[a] sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” In verse 8, he outlines the second list, sins against community. He says, “But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.” Dos and Don'tsIn a letter, Paul writes for the purpose of growing the Colossians' spiritual maturity, this is the first instance of a has dos and don'ts list. Paul knew something that we often forget: rules don't compel people to act, stories do. This is why Pauls spends the first two Chapters of Colossians rooting us, placing us in the story of Jesus. Putting to Death Sin“[T]o put something to death you must cut off its lines of supply- every Christian has the responsibility before God to investigate the lifelines of whatever sins are defeating him personally and to cut them off without pity- Better that than have them eventually destroy you…One cannot always prevent angry or hateful thoughts from springing into one's head, but they should be dealt with firmly before they turn into words. It is not ‘healthy', as is sometimes supposed, to allow such thoughts to find expression. It is certainly healthy to recognize and face up to one's own anger or frustration, and to search for proper and creative ways of dealing with it. But words do not merely convey information or let off steam. They change situations and relationships, often irrevocably. They can wound as well as heal. Like wild plants blown by the wind, hateful words can scatter their seeds far and wide, giving birth to more anger wherever they land.” – N.T. WrightPaul ends these lists with a summative statement. He says in v. 9 and 10;“9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self[c] with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.” Sins as Lies “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” – John 8:44“our fight with the devil is first and foremost a fight to take back control of our minds from their captivity to lie and liberate them with the weapon of truth.” – John Mark ComerClothing MetaphorThe idea of clothing is commonly associated with resurrection. When Lazarus is resurrected, Jesus instructs the people to unbind him, to rid him of his burial clothes. When Jesus is resurrected, he leaves his burial clothes behind.“The very first tear he made was so deep that I thought it had gone right into my heart. And when he began pulling the skin off, it hurt worse than anything I've ever felt. The only thing that made me able to bear it was just the pleasure of feeling the stuff peel off.” – CS Lewis1. We live in the already but not yet. Paul in v. 1 of Chapter three says if you then have been raised with Christ in the past tense. Then in v. 10, he says our new self is being renewed in knowledge present tense. “As people our souls are tethered to [the story or kingdom of Jesus] like a rubber band and the further we get from that story the more tension we feel. And being that we live in the between there are constantly things that belong to death pulling us from that kingdom citizenship.” –Ashley AndersonPart of the reason transformation is difficult is because although we have been clothed in new clothes we still live in a world filled with old clothes. We are in the already but not yet. 2. Transformation does not feel achievable is because we focus too much on our old clothes. Paul goes on later in vv. 12-14 to say don't focus on the old clothes, but focus on the new ones. We need to focus more on our new clothes and not on our old ones 3. Transformation feels difficult because we lack the long view. Malcolm Gladwell's 2008 book, Outliers: The Story of Success explains that in order to become an expert in anything you have to spend at least 10,000 hours practicing a particular skill. That equates to 20 hours a week for 10 years. SPIRITUAL PRACTICE | What would it look like to apply the 10,000 hour rule to our spiritual formation? Could it be that this transition from old to new clothes is something that happens over a lifetime and not simply a day, a week, a month, or a year? “As I write this [chapter], I just came off a pretty rough week. A few interpersonal things had me really stressed out and by the time my Sabbath rolled around I was really feeling it. I've had an adulthood-long struggle with anxiety, that while better than it's ever been, still rears its ugly head on a regular basis. And in that moment of discouragement, when I was literally thinking, Will I ever mature past anxiety's hold on my soul? I felt the Spirit remind me to take the long view. Here's John Mark and peace in his twenties…. Not much to look at. A very anxious young man with a tortured sensitivity. Here's John Mark and peace in his thirties… Better but still a long way to go. Forties… Wow, I see a noticeable uptick. But still a lot of road ahead But by the time I'm in my sixties? Deep shalom, friends, deep shalom. Come what may, my soul is at peace with God. So with that vision of my future self in mind, I go about the rest of my day. I am practicing the Way of Jesus as best I can and playing the long game. Testosterone levels for the average man begin to drop about 10% per decade. What are some of the misconceptions and misnomers that are getting in the way of people using it? Why is the idea that testosterone causes prostate cancer such a huge myth? How do side effects come about when you’re on TRT? On this episode, we talk all things TRT with fitness expert and best-selling author, John Romaniello. "For the vast majority of individuals, testosterone supplementation is not a question of "if", but of "when". Once you look at it through that lens, you ask yourself: 'Why am I waiting?'." -John Romaniello Takeaways - Establish a testosterone baseline by getting tested every 2 years in your mid-twenties onward. Only when you establish a baseline can you really know when things start to drop. - There’s a very good chance that an overweight person can have elevated estrogen symptoms because fat tissue is where the aromatase enzyme hangs out. - Sleeping 6 hours or less per night for 14 days can drop testosterone levels by up to 15%. At the start of the show, we talked about the importance of establishing your testosterone baseline and how low you should let it get before looking into doing TRT. We also talked about why biochemical uniqueness is the ultimate determinant, and the importance of finding the right needle size to reduce scar tissue. John also talked about mitigating fluctuations, and why getting less than 6 hours of sleep for as little as 14 days can have a catastrophic effect on your natural testosterone levels. Towards the end, we talked about the use of peptides. We also discussed: - Testosterone and increased quality of life in the short term vs. decreased longevity in the long term - The difference between sexual dysfunction and decreased libido - Why TRT does not cause cancer - TRT and depression From age 30, physically speaking, everything is on a downward slope. All you’re doing by optimizing is decreasing the grade of that slope. If you do testosterone right, there are no side effects and you won’t need other medications unless there’s a medical need. Testosterone in high amounts exacerbates things to which you were already prone, which can explain the side effects. Some of the benefits you’ll experience are reduced “brain fog”, increased cognition and clearer thought patterns-- and this is just the beginning. He also stated the danger of going from that to going straight to the gym and how that can do even more damage. “You can have a mobile spine but you can bear really high loads or you can be a power lifter but you have to be stiffened in order to to do that.” To aid your back in the office, avoid overloading your spine for long periods by getting out of the chair, pushing for the ceiling, inhaling and exhaling. This will give your ligaments normal spinal stability. Toward the end of the show, we discussed chiropractic manipulation and Eastern medicine. It’s very common for strength and conditioning coaches not to measure what that person’s particular body needs. Dr. Stuart McGill stresses the importance of that knowledge. It’s also necessary to remember these key points; the more you trigger back pain you get better at sensing it. Health and fitness gurus often push calorie counting and macros on their clients but what’s missing from their guidance? Nutritionist Paul Burgess explains why clients need to understand food and its environment before anything else, and how his practice does exactly that. We also get special insight into food sensitivities and ketogenic diet tactics. Three Takeaways Macros can be misleading because people don’t just fit into specific categories. Macros also fail to take individual allergies and sensitivities into account. If you put on weight quickly that means your body doesn’t take fat and sugar well. Consider intermittent fasting to allow your body to improve its sensitivity to glucose. To take stress off your system, get your diet right and get your gut right. The show started with Paul giving a bit of a background about his interest in fitness and nutrition. His focus was always on having a long healthy life. After leaving the investment industry in London he began his work in the nutritional coaching industry. Paul noted the big difference between the needs of a client in their 30s and a client in their 40s, but he stated that his process is the same for every client he works with. “Clients come with different goals but there are two things you need to do before anything, and if you are not doing those things then there’s no point going any further.” Paul believes in first evaluating what the client is eating to flag any potential intolerances and sensitivities, then he likes to examine the environment that the food goes into. “If you’re eating crap you’ll never flourish properly or optimize anything in your system.” He goes on to add, “you can have the best diet in the world but if it’s not getting absorbed properly, and is compromised - you are still not going to absorb those nutrients and you’re still going to have problems.” Paul went into detail the testing process his clients go through, as a way of ascertaining the diet adjustments they need to make. Paul looks at a three-month window of reactivity to a certain range of food and these findings give a closer look at the markers for health. The information simplifies the process of addressing organ health and a client will know which foods to use and which ones to avoid. We turn our conversation to an example of the kinds of tests Paul would run and how he’d use the data gained from them. For the average person with a high amount of liver enzymes, lifestyle plays a huge role and the result would be non-alcoholic fatty liver disease caused by insulin resistance or sensitivity. “Once your liver is compromised in that way, it functions sub-optimally.” We also discuss the foods that are most reactive for a lot of people. Contrary to popular belief wheat and gluten are not number one on that list. Eggs, almonds, walnuts and whey protein are much higher on that list. Paul also stated that a lot of people are commonly intolerant to beef, potatoes and kidney beans. Towards the end of the interview Paul and I touched on; The fact that calorie counting and macros are not the best ways to approach nutrition. The benefits of intermittent fasting for people who gain weight easily and struggle to lose it as fast. The ketogenic diet and how it can be used as a fuel source for your body. Esoteric researcher and author Matthew LaCroix shares his perspective on modern medicine, suppression of plant-based cures such as cannabinoids. Matt and Jay also dive deep into consciousness, awareness, focusing on the present, reconnecting with nature and the influences and experiences that inspired his book, The Illusion of Us. The interview kicked off with Matt’s background and early writing influences including Graham Hancock, explaining “There was a lot of information being suppressed and not being talked about.” A big part of Matt’s drive to research alternative and natural health solutions comes from his wife being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Matt dove into research and came to the conclusion that “the so-called medicine we were being given...was causing harm.” Matt also pointed out that they were able to transition off pharmaceuticals completely, and she has stayed off for 2 ½ years. Next Jay and Matt turned to the subject of cannabinoids, and Matt pointed out, “The first thing we have to do is separate the idea of someone ever getting high... Cannabinoids and cannabis are just one little piece of an enormous palette of natural plants that we used to use for thousands of years that became pushed out by artificial components and the pharmaceutical industry.” Matt went on to explain, “Every component of cannabis, it sounds too good to be true. The seeds of cannabis have the most amount of protein of any seed on earth. We could eliminate hunger on the earth by cannabis seeds alone.” So why are cannabis and cannabinoids being suppressed? “There is no money in a cure,” Matt pointed out. “If you had both, the natural component side, and the natural was vastly superior to the synthetic, nobody would be taking artificial drugs to begin with. So the only way to keep those in the system is demonize and basically not even create medicines out of the natural ones.” After discussing consciousness, awareness and nature, Jay and Matt shift to Matt’s book, The Illusion of Us. Fitness levels, recovery periods and the body’s response to exercise changes as we get older. How does a person over 40 get a workout that gives them results while still avoiding injury, overtraining and overtaxing your nervous system? On this episode, Jay Campbell talks with fitness coach and writer Bryan Krahn, who provides a guide for training in your 40s. We started off the episode with the core topic of the day - fitness over 40. On the subject Bryan says it’s impossible to prescribe a blanket statement to an entire age group but there are key trends that have to be modified because you’re aging. There are people that respond much better and that’s because they come from an active background and follow a quasi-athlete lifestyle. For older people, when your training, nutritional and lifestyle factors are dialed in you actually look better because you’re neurologically more efficient. Also, if you’ve been training for 25 years consistently with an appreciable load, your muscles develop a hardness and density that doesn’t happen over a short period of time. Bryan added a key benefit to training when you’re older, “you get good at this, you figure out how your body works and you allow yourself to get into a really good rhythm. When you’re young you jump from trend to trend but when you’re older you figure out what truly works for you.” To develop the kind of mastery that benefits your physique it’s important to get into habit and learn your body. “Everyone has a slightly different recovery pattern and mental things that keep them engaged and you learn what those things are.” Jay then turned the discussion to the matter of programming. Bryan stated that he had to draw a line in the sand when it came to strength training even though there’s a huge push for it online. He said, “volume is what you have to curtail as you get older.” If you keep busting heavy loads and low rep sets it crushes you way faster than doing normal body building sets. It’s way less impactful, you bounce back faster and it builds a better physique and there’s less risk of injury. Bryan aims to get his older clients out of the habit of loading more bars and more into the training experience, figuring out baseline volume and working their way up. On the subject of isolation exercises for older people, Byran said, “isolation work is important because it allows you to have a much more focused and better mind to muscle connection, there’s a lower risk potential, you won’t injure yourself as much. Jay and Bryan then focus in on overtraining, which Bryan calls “the boogie man of body building.” People over 40 typically are not overtraining and doing things like bench presses because their shoulders can’t handle that anymore. Strength training is something many glamorize but it can cause injury if you’re not built for it. For most people who go to the gym recreationally, you’re not going to overtrain but you might overreach - especially if your lifestyle isn’t aligned to your workout regimen. Bryan reminded us to look out for the signs, which include things like negative self-talk and feeling like exercise is a chore. When this happens, it’s time to do a little less work and get some sleep. Jay closed the interview with a question about the cardio and resistance training balance when you’re older. He said he leans more on the strength training side but he uses cardio as a stress management tool, a good stress management tool. Bryan’s tips for training over 40 are to start off with a realistic assessment of where you are, focusing on the quality of your work in the gym instead of performance. Lastly and most importantly make sure you avoid injury because it sets you back and recovery is harder when you’re older. Nelson Vergel, author of the landmark book Testosterone: A Man’s Guide, joins to share his story of overcoming a deadly diagnosis, helping to pioneer the use of anabolic steroids in HIV/AIDS treatment and his perspective on life goals and awareness. We started with Nelson’s background growing up in Venezuela. Nelson wanted to get into medicine but opportunity was limited, so instead he got into the oil and gas industry as an environmental engineer before emigrating to the US in 1984. Shortly after settling down in the States Nelson was diagnosed with HIV, at that time the equivalent of a death sentence. In fact, one counselor told him, “Go home, pray, and take care of your business.” Nelson pulled himself up, telling himself, “I refuse to die” and soon he spotted an opportunity. “I became obsessed. I found out the CDC for the first time was training volunteers who wanted to inform themselves and become counselors.” This had a major impact on him, “It really helped me. I really got it. I got what it is to help others get out of your head, get out of your self pity, get aware of your power. Power even in the worst situation in your life, not to let that rule you and define you.” Nelson jumped at another opportunity, this time to join a study for a new drug called AZT. He seemed to be doing well, even hiding the illness from co-workers. It was later revealed that Nelson was in the placebo group, which turned out to be a blessing, as patients receiving the real AZT in the study were wasting away. Nelson lost so many friends to HIV in the 80’s that he stopped counting at 35, including his boyfriend who was also in the AZT trial. “I feel like I aged a lot in my soul...Every week was a memorial service. I shut down.” Nelson was transferred to LA and joined a support group where he encountered bodybuilders for the first time. With nothing to lose, Nelson started taking supplements and alternative therapies and immediately felt more energy. Once again, Nelson’s dream of working in medicine and health resurfaced. He started researching, subscribing to the top AIDS newsletters in the country, often reading till the early hours of the morning. This led to a major turning point, where Nelson came across an article by a “Dr. X” who was HIV+ and had risen from his deathbed by using anabolic steroids. Nelson, with the help of friends, connected with him and other researchers and doctors. Through these relationships and his own research, Nelson began working on his book and then lecturing across the country, eventually delivering over 600 lectures. Nelson gets messages everyday from people who’ve been impacted by his writing, “Every time I give, I get a lot more back.” Jay agreed, “Once you align yourself with being generous, paying it forward, always being of the mindset to help other people, it’s amazing what comes into your life.” Nelson shared his perspective on ego, “You’re going to have an ego voice that’s going to try to tell you that you’re not worthy. That you’re not good looking, not smart enough, or whatever.” He went on to explain you’re never really cured, but you can come to a place where you recognize the ego as something outside of yourself.
