Welcome to episode 413 of The Outdoor Biz Podcast, brought to you this week by Toyota. From the RAV 4 to the mighty Tacoma, Toyota has a model built for everyone's Outdoor adventures. I'm excited to talk with Toyota North America Midwest PR and Outdoor Communications Manager and fellow OWAA member Curt McAllister. Brought to you this week by Toyota Facebook Twitter Instagram Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! Sign up for my Newsletter HERE I'd love to hear your feedback about the show! You can contact me here: rick@theoutdoorbizpodcast.com Show Notes [04:59.1] How did you get involved with Toyota? Curtis got involved with Toyota through the Great Lakes Outdoor Writers Association. The association approached him about starting the Toyota Let's Go Places scholarship program aimed at supporting young individuals interested in outdoor media. [11:26:1] What drives Toyota's commitment to promoting hunting, fishing, and conservation? Toyota's commitment to promoting hunting, fishing, and conservation is showcased through its sponsorship of outdoor communicator scholarships. These scholarships aim to support young individuals in these fields and help replenish memberships in outdoor media groups. [14:03:3] What is your role in Toyota's sponsorship of outdoor communicator scholarships? Curtis's role involves collaborating with organizations like the Great Lakes Outdoor Writers Association to initiate the Toyota Let's Go Places scholarship program. They help target and support young people interested in journalism or forestry by funding their attendance at conferences and events. [14:55:03] How about the process of choosing a scholarship winner? The process involves targeting three or four young individuals, usually through word of mouth or by approaching local colleges with journalism or forestry majors. Toyota sponsors their conference attendance by covering accommodations, registrations, and travel expenses. [21:09:1] Do you get outside much yourself? I try to get outside as much as possible. I live in a rural part of Northern Oakland County, Michigan, and engage in activities like leaf-peeping, exploring natural trails, and visiting dog parks. Additionally, I coach college football, spending several nights a week on the football field. [24:33:5] What is your favorite outdoor activity? Curtis enjoys fishing and shares fond memories of taking their sons fishing. They find solace in taking a couple of hours off to fish at local reservoirs or lakes. [25:27:5] Can you share an epic outdoor adventure with us?  Curtis shares his experiences with whitewater rafting in West Virginia with friends. They found these adventures on the Cheat or New Rivers and recall the thrill of navigating the rapids. [25:54:7] Do you have any suggestions and/or advice for folks wanting to get into the outdoor/adventure biz? I suggest discovering one's passion within the outdoor industry and approaching companies aligned with that interest. Additionally, becoming an influencer through social media content is another way to gain traction in the outdoor industry. [29:03:5] What is your favorite outdoor gear purchase under $100? Not too long ago, I picked up a powerful LED flashlight from Bass Pro Shops for around $40. They find it useful for various activities, especially for evening dog walks. [30:18:1] How about some of your favorite books? Are you a big reader? I'm a faith based gentleman, I certainly try to dive into the Bible as much as I can. I also enjoy folklore books, particularly during Halloween season, like "Spooky Michigan" by S.E. Schlosser, which explores local paranormal stories. [31:41:5] Is there anything else you want to say or ask of our listeners?  We at Toyota are really proud of our products. We literally have every segment covered. We've got some great new products that are on the way. Like the new Tacoma and the return of the Land Cruiser to the United States in the spring, along with a significant price drop. Gessy Alvarez talks to Digging Press author Mandy-Suzanne Wong about her chapbook Awabi. About Awabi: A Duet of Short Stories Mandy-Suzanne Wong deftly explores the complex world of the ama — ocean women, mostly elderly, who eke out a living while diving deep to capture abalone, snails, and otherworldly sea creatures for food. Unlike the men of the fictional village of Kaiyono who fish from boats, the ama battle the cold currents without scuba tanks or snorkels. They do this while facing the threat of an ecological crisis they had no hand in causing. Suffused with lyrical imagery and profound longing, Mandy-Suzanne Wong creates evocative moments of love, pride, jealousy, misunderstanding, and sacrifice in this duet of short stories. Winner of the Digging Press Chapbook Series Award and a Wardrobe's Best Dressed selection, Awabi is in its second edition. About the Author: Mandy-Suzanne Wong is a Bermudian writer of fiction and essays. Her debut novel, Drafts of a Suicide Note (Regal House, 2019), was a Foreword INDIES finalist, Independent Publisher Award winner, NextGen Indies Award winner, and PEN Open Book Award nominee. Listen, we all bleed (New Rivers, 2021), her first essay collection, was an ASLE Book Award finalist, an EcoLit Best Environmental Book of 2021, and a PEN/Galbraith nominee. Her fiction chapbook Awabi (Digging Press, 2022), winner of the 2018 Digging Press Chapbook Series Award, is now in its second edition. Her next novel, The Box (Graywolf), is forthcoming in 2023. Good morning everybody today is November 13th 2019, I hope everybody is having a wonderful Wednesday morning. Today we have a article on hydropower and climate change and how it affects us daily. So lets break it down! As everybody should know hydropower dams are all around the world and they help us with our nation's energy. But it's not reliable enough to easily meet our 21st century needs and we can't create enough for New Rivers due to weakened Environmental Protections placed on harmful dams. Our nation is at a Crossroads and we desperately need to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels. It's actually very imperative that we continue are track on zero emissions and replacing fossil fuels, most people don't realize that we actually use hydroelectricity and a lot of people are still foreign to the concept of solar energy and wind energy. The beginning step of transitioning into a zero emissions world is putting to rest fossil fuels leaving them alone and only using renewable resources such as solar wind and hydroelectricity. The only solutions that we have at the moment for hydroelectricity is we must increase efficiency at existing hydropower dams most of them were built between 50 and 75 even more than a hundred years ago how many of the dams are intensified inefficient generating equipment and the damn owners should be required to get the equipment up to today standards and make sure that they are working to maximum capacity for every drop of water that runs through the machine. We should consider adding hydropower capacity to existing dams seeing as there are more than 90,000 dams in the US and only a quarter of these are actually in use and actually have hydropower capacity making sure that we add the hydropower to these dams in good repair can exponentially push more of them to be ready and usable. We must recognize that the dams have finite life spans and have to be continuously monitored and rebuilt we also need to make sure that everyone understands that dams have an impact and can be broken apart by erosion over time so it doesn't matter the size of them but it does matter the amount of Maintenance put on them. It really doesn't make any sense to start construction on new dams considering the fact that we have so many around the world what we should really be doing is trying to efficiently get all of them up to today's standards and start prioritizing hydroelectricity. Everyone must remember that dams do damage Rivers they disrupt the flow they degrade the water quality they continuously block the rivers normal vital functions in a they do destroy some fish and wildlife habitats but we could turn around and relocate these habitats to make sure that we do not endanger any fish species. My final note is that hydropower dams can be contributing to the global warming pollution when a forest is cut down to make way for a dam or Reservoir sing as those trees no longer are available to absorb carbon dioxide created by the fossil fuels that we are admitting they have no way to combat it so it is a double edged sword which is why I also say Do not create new ones complete and maintenance on the existing ones and use them. All right guys that's all we have for today please remember that you can follow us on LinkedIn, Twitter, Reddit, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Anchor, Tik Tok and Snapchat and always remember that we are here have a great day!

For twenty years, Ohio native, Matt Hammitt, was the lead singer and songwriter for Dove Award-winning two time Grammy-nominated band Sanctus Real. During that time, the band released eight albums under Sparrow Records, toured internationally and released 14 Top 5 and #1 singles to Christian radio, making the band a household name among Christian music fans worldwide.Authored by Matt, Sanctus Real's most recognized hit, “Lead Me,” has resonated with men, women, and families all over the world. However, what most people don't recognize, is the great irony behind the song itself. "Lead Me," the very song that catapulted the band to the heights of their success, was also the song that would play a major part in Matt's twenty-year career as their front-man coming to an end. As crowds of thousands echoed the words "Don't want to leave them hungry for love, chasing things that I could give up" Matt was deeply convicted that it was time for him to start singing those words less and living them more. Matt made the difficult decision to step away from the band. In February, 2016, Matt played his final show with Sanctus Real. The emotions behind Matt's decision to leave his former band is penned into the opening track of his self-titled album, "Heaven Knows." Throughout the album, Matt takes on the difficulties of stepping out of a familiar and comfortable place to follow Jesus, who often calls us to do difficult things for our ultimate good. Blind trust, or simply put, faith, is a thread that's woven throughout all ten tracks of Matt's new album. Matt has been married to his wife Sarah for sixteen years, and together they have four children. Birthed from his own struggles, one of Matt's greatest passions has become ministering to broken families. In 2010, Matt's son, Bowen, was born with a rare and severe heart disease. Through the pain of caring for a sick child, Matt and Sarah faced some very difficult years of marriage. Out of their experience, Matt and Sarah, started two organizations that mister to families today. Whole Hearts Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides financial, emotional and spiritual support for families of children living with pediatric heart disease. In 2016, Matt and Sarah also launched "Lead Me Live" men's conferences, aimed at encouraging and equipping men to become great spiritual leaders in their home. In 2016, Matt partnered with Full Circle Music and producer Seth Mosley to begin work on a new album which is slated to release in November 2017. “Tears”, the first radio single, broke into the Billboard Christian Airplay Top 50 chart within two weeks of its debut. His current single, “He Always Wins” is a worship anthem that is quickly being sung in churches around the globe. Additionally, Matt is writing a book about the themes of Lead Me and will release in late 2018.
