Folge 154: Michael Kockot - Perspektivwechsel

Man müsste mal...

Play Episode Listen Later May 10, 2026

From vengeful spirits and haunted houses to ghost trains, talking cats, and a lake monster with a taste for swimmers — these chilling tales will make you think twice before laughing off April Fools Day.IN THIS EPISODE: This episode was originally aired on April 1st, 2019. Many podcasts and YouTube channels today are taking advantage of the date on the calendar and playing practical jokes on their subscribers in celebration of All Fools Day. I admit, I was tempted to begin a story and then Rick-Roll you, but instead I thought it might be fun to bring some dark stories into today's podcast that have a funny or amusing twist to them. Still creepy, but comical as well. For 25 years, Fast Food Nation has shaped the way we think about what we eat, how it is made, and who pays the price. Its author, Eric Schlosser, did more than expose the hidden realities behind the fast food industry. He revealed a much bigger story about corporate power, political influence and the human cost of profit. In this episode of Full Disclosure, James O'Brien sits down with the acclaimed investigative writer to mark the anniversary of the book that changed the conversation around food. Schlosser reflects on a childhood shaped by privilege, culture and intellectual curiosity, before explaining how early ambitions as a playwright and screenwriter eventually gave way to a career in long-form journalism. They discuss the reporting behind Fast Food Nation, from slaughterhouses and meatpacking plants to boardrooms and lobbying operations, and why Schlosser came to see the industry as a lens through which to understand modern America. He explains how the story of fast food became a story about labour, inequality, deregulation and the alliance between government and big business. The conversation also ranges across his wider body of work, including prisons, nuclear weapons and the enduring appeal of investigative writing that challenges power rather than flatters it. Thoughtful, unsparing and deeply timely, this is a conversation about journalism, capitalism and why the systems shaping our lives deserve much closer scrutiny.Find out more about the 25th anniversary edition of Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser hereEXCLUSIVE NordVPN Deal -> https://nordvpn.com/fulldisclosure Try it risk-free now with a 30-day money-back guarantee

My guest this week is Eric Schlosser, the investigative journalist and author whose work has fundamentally changed how we think about what we eat. Fast Food Nation was a landmark book that exposed the abuse of animals and the exploitation of workers at the heart of America's food industry. Now, 25 years after it was first published, Schlosser says he is astonished that not only has the industry failed to improve, in many ways it has gotten worse. And yet, despite this, he still believes change is possible.

Some episodes feel like a deep exhale. This one did that for me.In this episode, I sit down with Rebecca Schlosser, a trauma informed breathwork facilitator, yoga teacher, and free spirited midlifer joining me from Albuquerque, New Mexico. What unfolds is not a tidy how to conversation. It is real. Messy. Funny. Honest. And deeply embodied. We talk about what it means to be labeled too much and how that story shows up in midlife, relationships, creativity, money, and even how we decorate our homes. We explore how perfectionism freezes us, how comparison sneaks in quietly, and how breath becomes a way back to ourselves when life feels overwhelming or unfinished.Rebecca guides us through a gentle breathwork practice you can do as you listen, inviting you to meet the parts of yourself you usually try to push away. Not to fix them. Just to notice them. To breathe with them. To let them belong. This episode is about the paradox of slowing down in order to move forward. About trusting that the adventure is already happening, even when it looks imperfect or incomplete. In this full episode, we exploreThe idea of too muchness and why it might actually be your giftHow breathwork helps us meet insecurity instead of resisting itPerfectionism, comparison, and the nervous systemWhy small moments of presence can change everythingLearning to live breath by breath instead of striving for certaintyAs you listen, notice what you are being asked to meet rather than manage.Links and ResourcesFree 30-minute 1:1 discovery sessions: https://purple-firefly-12441.myflodesk.com/privatesessionInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/rebeccahappybreaths/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rebecca.schlosser.5Send us a text Support the show✨ Join My TEDx Spokane Journey! Was könnten wir stattdessen produzieren? Wer entscheidet, was produziert wird?

Description: Listen as NPF Medical Board Members, dermatologist Dr. Robert Kalb and rheumatologist Dr. Sergio Schwartzman discuss the connections between psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, from cytokines to triggers, current and future treatments.   Join moderator Alan Simmons as he gains insights on what connects psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis with leading experts in psoriatic disease and NPF Medical Board members, dermatologist Dr. Robert Kalb with Buffalo Medical Group Dermatology, and rheumatologist Dr. Sergio Schwartzman from Schwartzman Rheumatology, as they discuss the known drivers of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, common triggers, benefits of targeted treatments, remission of disease, and upcoming treatment trends. The intent of this episode is to identify potential connections between psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, and how targeted treatments have changed the outlook for management of psoriatic disease. This episode is sponsored by Novartis. Timestamps: (0:41) Intro to Psoriasis Uncovered and guest welcome dermatologist Dr. Robert Kalb and rheumatologist Dr. Sergio Schwartzman who are both involved in clinical care and research of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.  (1:15) Current known pro-inflammatory cytokines and cells found in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.   (5:33) Types of psoriasis that may lead to a higher risk of developing psoriatic arthritis. (9:33) Common triggers for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis that could cause flares of the disease. (12:59) Key factors that are considered when choosing a treatment plan for any individual with psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis. (18:04) What treatment remission means for psoriasis. (19:36) Use of minimal disease activity (MDA) in psoriatic arthritis and what it means. (22:14) How a better understanding of the disease has led to more effective treatment choices and what choices are used by Dr. Kalb and Dr. Schwartzman for the management of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. (28:39) New developments in treatment and research in psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis. (36:01) Given treatment advancements it's a wonderful time to treat psoriatic disease. 3 Key Takeaways: ·       Cytokines are chemicals in the body that moderate various processes. In psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis,  an unknown trigger stimulates some cells to overproduce pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha, IL-17 or IL-23 leading to the development of skin and joint disease.  ·       Treating psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis helps move the body towards normalizing the over reactive immune system especially with more targeted treatments that safely and effectively block specific cytokines without affecting other organ systems.  ·       Given advancements in targeted treatments the goal is to reach and maintain remission of psoriatic disease. Guest Bios:   Leading dermatologist Robert Kalb, M.D. is the Chair of the Buffalo Medical Group Dermatology Department and the Director of the Buffalo Medical Group Phototherapy Center, one of the leading centers for psoriasis care in Western New York. He is also a Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (SUNY Buffalo), as well as an Adjunct Professor of Dermatology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania where he plays a significant role in medical education, mentoring both medical students and dermatology residents. Dr. Kalb has extensive experience managing psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and other inflammatory skin diseases. He has authored 70+ publications and is actively involved in clinical research, particularly focused on new treatment options for psoriasis. He is a member of the NPF Medical Board, American Academy of Dermatology, and is a member of the International Psoriasis Council.  Sergio Schwartzman, MD, is a world-renowned rheumatologist based in New York City who brings almost 40 years of experience and personalized clinical care for those who have psoriatic disease. Along with being in private practice at Schwartzman Rheumatology, Dr. Schwartzman is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University, the New York-Presbyterian Hospital, and the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City where he has played a role in educating medical students, residents, fellows, and peers in rheumatology. Additionally, Dr. Schwartzman is the emeritus Franchellie M. Cadwell Clinical Associate Professor at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Schwartzman's current research interests include psoriatic arthritis, the spondyloarthritis group of diseases, ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, as well as defining and treating autoimmune diseases of the eye. Leading dermatologist and NPF Medical Board Member, Dr. Tina Bhutani, and Gail Reiser who lives with plaque psoriasis discuss what “on treatment remission” means for those who have the disease and health care providers.   Join moderator and resident physician Olivia Kam as she discusses the definition of on treatment remission for plaque psoriasis, and how this definition impacts the management of the disease and when to change treatments with leading dermatologist Dr. Tina Bhutani from Synergy Dermatology in San Francisco, and Gail Reiser who has been living with plaque psoriasis for over 42 years experiencing a variety of treatment options.  The intent of this episode is to increase knowledge of the latest consensus statement defining what “on treatment remission” means in the context of managing plaque psoriasis and how such information can be used to guide patient/provider discussion and setting treatment goals. This episode is sponsored by AbbVie. Timestamps: (0:23) Intro to Psoriasis Uncovered and guest welcome dermatologist Dr. Tina Bhutani and Gail, who has been living with plaque psoriasis for over 42 years. (1:56) Definition of “on treatment remission” and development of this unified consensus statement that included almost 100 stakeholders. (3:28) How the definition of “on treatment remission” impacts management of psoriasis. (5:09) A patient's perspective about “on treatment remission” and what it means for future care. (8:57) Assessing when a change in treatment may be appropriate.   (11:19) What information a dermatologist can provide to assess if treatment is effective. (14:20) Prioritizing what to discuss with a dermatologist or health care provider. (17:21) Call to action for dermatologists from the “On Treatment Remission” consensus statement. (20:37) Advice for discussing treatment goals as a patient and health care provider. Key Takeaways: ·       A new consensus statement helps define and standardize what “On Treatment Remission” is and what it means for patient care. ·       Given current treatment options it is possible to reach skin clearance and on treatment remission. ·       Having standardized goals makes it easier for health care providers and patients who have psoriatic disease to work together to reach on treatment remission. Guest Bios:   Tina Bhutani, M.D., MAS, is a board-certified dermatologist who is the CEO and owner of Synergy Dermatology in San Francisco. Dr. Bhutani is also an Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at UCSF where she previously co-directed the Psoriasis and Skin Treatment Center and directed the Clinical Trials Unit for over 8 years. Dr. Bhutani understands the importance of treating the whole patient and is committed to a patient-centered approach to dermatology. She is a recognized leader in dermatology, giving talks at many national and international meetings. Dr. Bhutani is a member of the National Psoriasis Foundation Medical Board who recently published a consensus statement called “Defining On Treatment Remission in Plaque Psoriasis” in JAMA Dermatology. Gail Reiser was initially diagnosed with plaque psoriasis at age 12. She remembers the misdiagnoses and difficult treatments of the past such as coal tar and occlusion. Over 42 years of living with plaque psoriasis, Gail has experienced a variety of treatment options including topicals and light therapy, feeling “it is exhausting to treat psoriasis”. As she got older and her plaque psoriasis progressed, she eventually decided to try biologics and hasn't looked back since making that change. She feels her psoriasis is in remission but fears losing that in the future.  Resources: “Redefining Remission. Ecological crises threaten all forms of life on earth. Democracy too is endangered, as popular discontent, elite malfeasance, and unresponsive institutions imperil its survival. Present political concepts have proven inadequate to meeting these challenges, and their inadequacies are themselves symptoms of the failures of prevailing political, cultural, and ecological stories and practices. This book offers a new vision of ecological and participatory democratic life for a time of crisis. Identifying myth and ritual as key resources for contemporary politics, Earthborn Democracy excavates practices and narratives that illustrate the interdependence necessary to inspire ecological renewal. It tells stories of multispecies agency and egalitarian political organization across history, from ancient Mesopotamia and the precolonial Americas to contemporary social movements, emphasizing Indigenous traditions and resistance. Resonating across these practices and stories past and present is a belief that we are all―human as well as nonhuman―earthborn, and this can serve as the basis for reimagining democracy. Allying visionary political theory with environmental activism, Earthborn Democracy: A Political Theory of Entangled Life (Columbia UP, 2024) provides a foundation and a guide for collective action in pursuit of earthly flourishing. Part 1 Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser Summary"Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal" by Eric Schlosser is a pivotal book that explores the fast food industry's profound impact on American culture, society, and the global economy. Published in 2001, Schlosser's work combines investigative journalism, personal anecdotes, and social commentary to uncover the hidden truths behind the fast food phenomenon. Here are the main themes and summaries of key points from the book:Origins and Growth of Fast Food: Schlosser traces the rise of fast food from the establishment of McDonald's in the 1950s to its expansion across the United States and globally. He discusses how the fast food industry capitalized on American cultural values of convenience, efficiency, and consumerism, leading to a significant shift in eating habits.Industrialization of Food Production: The book examines the industrial processes involved in producing fast food, from meat processing plants to agriculture. Schlosser describes the harsh realities of factory farming, the treatment of animals, and the dehumanizing conditions faced by workers in the food industry.Health Implications: Schlosser explores the health risks associated with fast food consumption, linking the rise of fast food to increasing rates of obesity, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses. He critiques how fast food marketing often targets children and promotes unhealthy eating habits.Labor Exploitation: The author highlights the exploitation of low-wage workers in the fast food industry, detailing the low pay, lack of benefits, and poor working conditions many employees endure. This aspect emphasizes the socio-economic disparities perpetuated by the fast food model.Cultural Impact: Schlosser critiques how fast food has transformed American culture and identity, contributing to the homogenization of food and culture worldwide. He argues that the success of fast food chains signifies broader societal issues regarding consumerism, corporate power, and cultural imperialism.Environmental Concerns: The book discusses the environmental consequences of fast food production, including the depletion of natural resources, pollution from factories, and unsustainable agricultural practices that arise from the demand for cheap, mass-produced food.Corporate Influence and Marketing: Schlosser details how powerful corporations influence policy and society, emphasizing their marketing strategies that create brand loyalty and shape public perception. He addresses the ethical implications of marketing, especially towards children. In conclusion, "Fast Food Nation" serves as both an exposé of the fast food industry and a call to action for consumers, urging them to reconsider their food choices and be aware of the broader implications of the fast food system on health, labor, and the environment. Schlosser combines compelling narratives with extensive research, creating a critical examination of one of America's most iconic industries.Part 2 Fast Food Nation AuthorEric Schlosser is an American journalist and author, best known for his writing on the fast food industry and its socio-economic effects. His most famous work, "Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal," was released in 2001.
