SCOTUS: 2/10 It went about as badly as you might have expected, unless you thought an argument about being a megalomaniac with uncontrollable powers was going to fly. The Silver Ferns coach is being reinstated, after being stood down in September over player concerns. She says she still doesn't know why - and and has revealed there was no investigation. Employment expert Max Whitehead says Netball New Zealand shouldn't have acted on this if it couldn't name players or complaints. "The employer has an obligation on good faith and a natural justice to provide her with a name - and what the allegations are." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Gail Parata: Former Silver Ferns Selector on the treatment of Dame Noeline Taurua by Netball NZ

Former Silver Ferns selector Gail Parata has rebuked a lack of due process by Netball New Zealand in standing down coach Dame Noeline Taurua and assistant Debbie Fuller. The pair have been sidelined after allegations of an unsafe high performance environment, which remain unresolved. The issues are understood to date back to a Silver Ferns camp in January. Parata resigned as selector last month in a show of support for Taurua, and she told Mike Hosking no formal complaint was lodged. She says there's about 31 people in the Silver Ferns environment, including management and other athletes, and they only spoke to five Silver Ferns and two Junior Silver Ferns. “Why did they not speak to everyone? That's really, really disappointing.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Most stories need a hero, and Gail Parata might fit the role in this netball mess. Or is it now a scandal? Gail Parata has resigned as a national netball selector and in doing so has gone out guns blazing and, because of that, has given the rest of us a decent insight into what a shambles the Dame Noeline Taurua story really is. This thing is now weeks old since she got stood down. The story and the incidents go back, apparently, to a camp in summer. Taurua's treatment, writes Parata on social media, sends a chilling message to every coach in the country. The coaching profession's voice has been sidelined. Even the most successful, world class coaches are now dispensable. The very essence of coaching, relationships, trust and lived experience no longer seems to hold weight with those making decisions. She's on a roll at this point, God bless her. Who, she asks, would step into a role now knowing that one complaint, one misinterpretation or one moment taken out of context could end your career? The value of this, quite apart from the fact it's the first time as far as I know we have heard from a so called third party, is that the so-called "third party" seems to infer what we all suspect. This thing got blown out of all proportion. This thing, whatever it is, seems to involve some sort of upset, moaning, whining, fragile, ego-related overreaction to an event at the camp. In other words, some players got huffy over Noeline's approach. So the big question for Netball NZ is just how many casualties do you want? You have star players publicly calling you out and wanting their coach back, you've got lawyers in six minute blocks, and now a selector who clearly feels someone has to break the silence and flush a few truths out. The damage is to Noeline, to the sport, to the selection panel and to coaches generally because the questions raised by Parata are all excellent and, like all the other questions in this stinking mess, require some answers. Mike's Minute: Noeline Taurua has been badly treated

The Mike Hosking Breakfast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 14, 2025 2:17 Transcription Available

Noeline Taurua isn't the first coach to be badly treated. But she might be the most successful and well regarded. Sport is a funny thing, especially nowadays where it seems to want to walk a line between being successful and being modern, or dare I suggest the word "woke"? Last week when reports of players feeling unsafe emerged I didn't even know what they meant by that. "Unsafe" is something that might happen in the dark, in an alley. It's a physical danger thing, as opposed to an emotional state on a court. On a court you can be exhausted, or exhilarated, or furious, or elated. I just can't work out how you are "unsafe". Which in part is the problem. It's an invention or a new derivation of the word. Your “environment” has been interfered with. Even if you accept its new usage it's the sort of thing you might find on a university campus among the angsty. On a sports field or court it has no place. Even less so if that court is at the elite level. Cycling had a horrible time, but that was abuse. Is netball talking about abuse? Does Taurua abuse people? That doesn't seem to be the suggestion. Next problem is the lack of clarity, if not honesty. All reports seem to indicate "unsafe" is code for the coach being old fashioned, demanding high standards and not putting up with slackness. We used to like that approach. That approach was the norm. The only purpose of elite sport is victory. It exists for no other reason than to let a chosen few express themselves in a way where they win and others can piggyback by way of TV licensing and ticket sales. Unless Noeline Taurua has had a personality transformation and they are all wandering around at Netball NZ going "what happened to Noels, man she's changed", which I suspect hasn't happened, then what we are left with is the inescapable conclusion that Taurua is the victim of soft management in a world where every crybaby is “heard” and the ultimate victim, in an irony of irony's, is one of the sport's greatest exponents. She is benched while the woke in the boardroom wreck the national women's sport.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

D'Arcy Waldegrave: Netball NZ's poor management of the Taurua situation

It's been quite the week for Netball New Zealand. The walls came crashing in on Wednesday when it was announced that super coach Noeline Taurua was stood down in the shadow of an investigation into the Silver Ferns high performance programme and environment. The statement was as abrupt as it was unexpected. Netball went into a tailspin as the whole sport, from deep inside to the exterior, flailed about trying to make sense of what had just happened. And we couldn't. It was a mess. It was clumsy at best, although negligent would be a better description of the handling of the situation. I will give them this though, the lid was well and truly sealed on this chaos. Short of those deep in the interior of this schism, no one knew, or at least no one leaked anything. Then the can sprang open, and the snake popped out to everyone's shock. I understand that at the heart of this issue is an employment tussle, making it difficult to share details of the rupture, but the lack of any detail surrounding the slow collapse of the relationship between the coach, the players, and the administration, leaves huge holes in the narrative. The executive team should've done better. They've given themselves a black eye. What happens in a vacuum such this? People build their own story. They take loose ends and string them together, creating a macramé mess that ties the sport in knots. There are reckons everywhere. Outrage in some quarters, confusion in others. That the CEO Jenny Wylie was on leave and the chair Matt Whinery was left to face the music created more angst. The whole process was, and still is, being poorly managed. Netball NZ has taken a number of body blows over the past few months, is this the one that will floor the organisation, leaving them prone on the canvas? Only time will tell. The Great Coaches: Leadership & Life

Noeline is a former national team player who is currently head coach of the New Zealand national netball team, the Silver Ferns. As player Noeline won a silver medal 1998 Commonwealth Games and a bronze medal at the 1995 Netball World Championships. From 2002 to 2013 she was the Head Coach of Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic leading them to the Championship in 2005, 2006 and 2012. In 2017 and 2018 she coached the Sunshine Coast Lightning to back to back premierships in the Australian Suncorp Super Netball league. Then in 2019 she famously led New Zealand to victory in the World Cup. Some of the highlights for me were:How the great coaches are able to mobilize people and create an environment where people want to keep coming back. The importance of having strategic drivers that will drive the vision you have for the club or team,The importance of succession planning and proving the right experiences to everyone in the team so that they grow. And the story she shares about her daughters experience of not getting on court for the team she plays for, and how this illustrates the way the she approaches learning and helping people reach their potential. Today on The Huddle: Jack Tame, host of Saturday Mornings and Q&A and Tim Wilson from Maxim Institute are here to discuss- Public service commissioner is to review contracts with Mahuta's husband companies at Mahuta's request. Does it still need to be looked into by our A-G as well? Noeline Taurua couldn't care less if Jamaica's coach is forced to play tonight (amazing from her) - how did this turn into such a mess? Netball NZ look like they'll seek redress too/ Are businesses being dramatic when they say they're losing faith in the justice system following the ST. Lukes smash and grab? Heather's 4.05 editorial is that they're not doing walkabouts because their reception won't look good compared to 2017 - is Heather right? Or being very cynical?  Festivals are back! Laneway's got a solid line up.. nature is healing!  LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
