New Zealand netball player and coach

Dame Noeline Taurua has been in negotiations with Netball New Zealand today to see whether she'll be able to coach the Silver Ferns again. Taurua and her coaching team were stood down ahead of the Taini Jamison series earlier this month, in what was a bombshell announcement from Netball New Zealand. With the Silver Ferns heading into their next camp on October 6, the clock is ticking to try and find a resolution and break what appears to be a deadlock between Taurua, the Players' Association and Netball New Zealand. Sports correspondent Dana Johannsen spoke to Lisa Owen.

Noeline Taurua isn't the first coach to be badly treated. But she might be the most successful and well regarded. Sport is a funny thing, especially nowadays where it seems to want to walk a line between being successful and being modern, or dare I suggest the word "woke"? Last week when reports of players feeling unsafe emerged I didn't even know what they meant by that. "Unsafe" is something that might happen in the dark, in an alley. It's a physical danger thing, as opposed to an emotional state on a court. On a court you can be exhausted, or exhilarated, or furious, or elated. I just can't work out how you are "unsafe". Which in part is the problem. It's an invention or a new derivation of the word. Your “environment” has been interfered with. Even if you accept its new usage it's the sort of thing you might find on a university campus among the angsty. On a sports field or court it has no place. Even less so if that court is at the elite level. Cycling had a horrible time, but that was abuse. Is netball talking about abuse? Does Taurua abuse people? That doesn't seem to be the suggestion. Next problem is the lack of clarity, if not honesty. All reports seem to indicate "unsafe" is code for the coach being old fashioned, demanding high standards and not putting up with slackness. We used to like that approach. That approach was the norm. The only purpose of elite sport is victory. It exists for no other reason than to let a chosen few express themselves in a way where they win and others can piggyback by way of TV licensing and ticket sales. Unless Noeline Taurua has had a personality transformation and they are all wandering around at Netball NZ going "what happened to Noels, man she's changed", which I suspect hasn't happened, then what we are left with is the inescapable conclusion that Taurua is the victim of soft management in a world where every crybaby is “heard” and the ultimate victim, in an irony of irony's, is one of the sport's greatest exponents. She is benched while the woke in the boardroom wreck the national women's sport.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's been quite the week for Netball New Zealand. The walls came crashing in on Wednesday when it was announced that super coach Noeline Taurua was stood down in the shadow of an investigation into the Silver Ferns high performance programme and environment. The statement was as abrupt as it was unexpected. Netball went into a tailspin as the whole sport, from deep inside to the exterior, flailed about trying to make sense of what had just happened. And we couldn't. It was a mess. It was clumsy at best, although negligent would be a better description of the handling of the situation. I will give them this though, the lid was well and truly sealed on this chaos. Short of those deep in the interior of this schism, no one knew, or at least no one leaked anything. Then the can sprang open, and the snake popped out to everyone's shock. I understand that at the heart of this issue is an employment tussle, making it difficult to share details of the rupture, but the lack of any detail surrounding the slow collapse of the relationship between the coach, the players, and the administration, leaves huge holes in the narrative. The executive team should've done better. They've given themselves a black eye. What happens in a vacuum such this? People build their own story. They take loose ends and string them together, creating a macramé mess that ties the sport in knots. There are reckons everywhere. Outrage in some quarters, confusion in others. That the CEO Jenny Wylie was on leave and the chair Matt Whinery was left to face the music created more angst. The whole process was, and still is, being poorly managed. Netball NZ has taken a number of body blows over the past few months, is this the one that will floor the organisation, leaving them prone on the canvas? Only time will tell. RNZ can reveal Netball New Zealand's shock decision to stand down Silver Ferns coach Noeline Taurua came after several players raised allegations the environment had become "psychologically unsafe". The allegations prompted an independent review, which highlighted "significant issues" within the programme. Taurua is understood to have rejected the findings, prompting a months-long stand-off between the national body and the Silver Ferns coaching staff. Sports correspondent Dana Johannsen spoke to Lisa Owen.

The Silver Ferns coach saga continues, with little to no information being available around what led to Dame Noeline Taurua being stood down from the national side ahead of the Taini Jamison Trophy kicking off next weekend. There is a thought that it stemmed from the 'old school' coaching of Noeline Taurua and that power has shifted and now sits with the athletes. D'Arcy caught up with legendary All Blacks sevens and 'old school' coach Sir Gordon Teitjens to discuss. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A telling response as speculation swirls around the standing down of Silver Ferns coach Dame Noeline Taurua ahead of next week's international series against South Africa. Netball New Zealand claim they've made the decision due to "issues" within the high-performance environment which remain unresolved. When asked by Mike Hosking if the players were boycotting Taurua because she's pushing too hard, Board Chair Matt Whineray paused, before denying the claim. Whineray told Hosking that they have some issues they need to resolve, and they're hopeful they can, but in the meantime, they need to focus on the series against South Africa. Yvette McCausland-Durie has been parachuted in as interim coaching cover. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Former Silver Fern Margaret Foster's hopeful Dame Noeline Taurua can rediscover her mojo in a new chapter for the national side. Newstalk ZB understands Taurua will be re-appointed as coach this afternoon after Netball New Zealand opened up the position for applications. The Silver Ferns won the 2019 World Cup under Taurua but failed to make the podium during last year's defence. Foster told Mike Hosking that Taurua is probably heads and shoulders above everyone else who applied, as long as she comes back with a new idea of what she wants to achieve. She doesn't think Taurua would've returned if she knew she didn't have the energy or passion to be able to make a real difference. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Silver Ferns took third at the Nations Cup and the conversation quickly turned to Dame Noeline Taurua's future as coach. Her original contract expired last October, and she signed a mini-extension to remain with the team until the end of their campaign in England. While she still hasn't committed to her future plans, Taurua insists an announcement is imminent. Former Ferns player and coach Yvonne Willering told Mike Hosking that should Taurua retire, we don't have good coaching stocks from which to replace her. She said that she would like to see Taurua stay on for another year and bring in a co-coach to get them used to the structures. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Noeline is a former national team player who is currently head coach of the New Zealand national netball team, the Silver Ferns. As player Noeline won a silver medal 1998 Commonwealth Games and a bronze medal at the 1995 Netball World Championships. From 2002 to 2013 she was the Head Coach of Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic leading them to the Championship in 2005, 2006 and 2012. In 2017 and 2018 she coached the Sunshine Coast Lightning to back to back premierships in the Australian Suncorp Super Netball league. Then in 2019 she famously led New Zealand to victory in the World Cup. Some of the highlights for me were:How the great coaches are able to mobilize people and create an environment where people want to keep coming back. The importance of having strategic drivers that will drive the vision you have for the club or team,The importance of succession planning and proving the right experiences to everyone in the team so that they grow. And the story she shares about her daughters experience of not getting on court for the team she plays for, and how this illustrates the way the she approaches learning and helping people reach their potential.
