Mark talks about honoring Goodyear's pioneering legacy — like the iconic Goodyear Blimp, now celebrating 100 years — while recognizing that past success can breed conservatism if left unchecked. At the core of all this change is a new way of thinking about partnerships. Mark discusses the shift from traditional supplier hierarchies to real, transparent collaborations — where information is shared, problems are solved together, and the success of one depends on the success of all.Beyond strategy, Mark shows what leadership looks like at a human level. From walking factory floors to learn how tires are made firsthand to personally rallying 68,000 associates around a simple, bold vision — to be number one in tires and service — he demonstrates that leadership today isn't about commanding from the top. It's about committing yourself fully to the people you serve.Mark shares glimpses of life outside the boardroom—from hiking with his Labradors in Akron's Metro Parks to binge-watching White Lotus to plotting a summer trip across Europe to see Robbie Williams live. These moments aren't distractions from leadership; they're reminders that authenticity—showing up fully human—is part of what makes great leadership real.Themes discussed in this episode:Why legacy companies must unlearn traditional business practices to survive industry disruptionHow EV tire technology and connected mobility are reshaping Goodyear's product strategyRevitalizing a legacy automotive brand: How Goodyear is transforming after 125 yearsBuilding supplier collaboration models for the future of the automotive supply chainMaking accountability and measurable KPIs the foundation of leadership transformationEmbedding innovation across all departments, not just R&D, to stay competitiveWhy reconnecting leadership with shop floor operations drives meaningful cultural changeHow Goodyear is rallying 68,000 global employees around a bold new vision for growthFeatured guest: Mark StewartWhat he does: Mark is the Chief Executive Officer and President of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, joining the company and its Board of Directors in January 2024. "Remembering Mark Stewart: Throwing Curveballs At The Moon" That's how The Pop Group's Mark Stewart describes the creative process and it might also very well be the perfect description of the Pop Group's career. Unconventional, ferociously innovative, and delightfully idiosyncratic, The Pop Group have never cared about what's happening in the mainstream and instead adhered to the rhythms and sounds that they wanted to make. In this whirlwind of an interview, the Bristol-born Stewart talks to Alex about UFO's, having tea with Sun Ra, The Sex Pistols, and how music bridged the racial divide in his town in the late 70s. He also talks about why he likes to hang out with oddballs, the avant-garde New York scene and a fight he once had with Allen Ginsberg.

How do we support left-handed children in a predominantly right-handed world? Mark Stewart, founder of Left n Write Ltd, shares his journey and insights on the unique challenges faced by left-handed individuals, particularly in educational settings. With over 1 million left-handed children in schools across England, Mark emphasizes the lack of awareness and training for educators on how to assist these students effectively. Mark started his small business about 30 years ago as a result of trying to find left-handed scissors for his youngest son when he was 4. Mark's wife Heather had no training in helping left-handed children during her Teacher Training so they started to campaign with their left-handed MP, Peter Luff, to change the Education system to be proactive rather than passive. They had meetings with Ministers, questions and a 30 minute adjournment debate in the House of Commons, produced a training video in 1999 (now downloadable/interactive and was updated last year) as well as writing an information/activity book titled "So You Think They're Left Handed?" and 3 books titled "Left Hand Writing Skills". We have also produced other resources specifically for left-handed children in education. Over the years I have run over 200 training workshops. In 2021 Mark co founded and is co-chair of a global group called "LEFT-IN" Left-Handers Education Forum and Training International Network (left-in.org) with the aim to improve the information and education available to the educators of left-handed children around the world.Takeaways: There are over 1 million left-handed children in schools in England, yet teacher training lacks essential support for them. Simple adjustments, like seating arrangements in classrooms, significantly benefit left-handed children and their right-handed peers. Left-handed children face unique challenges in a right-handed world, emphasizing the need for awareness and adjustments. The lack of data on left-handed children in education hinders understanding their needs and potential challenges. Mark Stewart encourages parents to advocate for left-handed children in schools to ensure they receive adequate support. Joe Rihn is a DJ, musician and writer with endless enthusiasm for his hometown of Los Angeles. His show Audio Days explores the wide world of electronic music and beyond with particular attention to artists pushing the boundaries of sound. In this special interview episode of Audio Days, influential UK artist Mark Stewart discusses his body of work, his creative processes and the music that has inspired him along the way. After beginning his career as the frontman of Bristol's celebrated post-punk band The Pop Group, Stewart went on to break new ground in electronic music through his work with dub producer and On-U Sound Records head, Adrian Sherwood, along with drummer Keith LeBlanc, bassist Doug Wimbish and guitarist Skip McDonald. Having performed as members of the Sugar Hill Records house band on early hip hop classics including “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, LeBlanc, Wimbish and McDonald provided the instrumental foundation for Stewart's 1985 album, “As the Veneer of Democracy Starts to Fade,” as well as other projects such as Tackhead and Fats Comet. With his new record “VS.,” which releases April 8, 2022 on Emergency Hearts, Stewart continues in that collaborative spirit. In addition to including names like KK Null, Stephen Mallidner and Mike Watt in its roster of uncompromising artists, VS. features contributions from late musicians Lee “Scratch” Perry and Mika Vainio. Following the hour-long interview segment, this episode features a mix of industrial, synth-wave and left-field cuts from the orbit of Mark Stewart and beyond. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dublab-inconversation/support

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's recent earnings call provided insights into the company's strategic focus and operational initiatives, as stated by CEO Mark Stewart.Stewart emphasized Goodyear's commitment to achieving optimal inventory levels, enhancing supply chain efficiency, and optimizing purchasing and manufacturing processes. He highlighted the adoption of electronic should costing, SKU profitability analysis, and translating these findings into actionable measures on the production floor.Goodyear is responding to shifts in consumer behavior and market dynamics, particularly the rise of low-end imports in Europe, which have grown from 20% to 27% of the market share in the last five years, according to Stewart. This trend has influenced the company's strategic decisions, including recent major restructurings in Europe. The company's operational turnaround is evident in the significant boost in segment operating income, with a substantial contribution from the Americas business segment. This success is partially attributed to the Goodyear Forward transformation plan, which has revitalized the company's market position and financial metrics.Stewart acknowledged the challenges posed by lower-end imports in the U.S. and European markets, as well as the weak fleet industry condition that continues to weigh on the company's business in the Americas and EMEA regions.Goodyear remains committed to executing the Goodyear Forward plan, aiming to substantially improve operating income margin by the end of 2025. The plan encompasses strategies for enhancing facility and operational efficiency, achieving cost-effective material rationalization, and pursuing factory closures in Germany and Malaysia to establish a more effective cost structure.Additionally, the company is focused on expanding its product portfolio with premium fitments for high-end and electric vehicles, broadening the Cooper brand, and amplifying consumer retail performance through consumer insights and price and product mix modifications. While Goodyear acknowledges the challenges it faces, the company's strategic initiatives and operational improvements position it for continued growth and operational excellence, as stated on the earnings call. However, the company's future success will depend on its ability to effectively navigate the evolving market conditions and consumer preferences. This is a public episode. My 2004 UGA Law School Classmate Erica Parson and her husband, Mark Stewart, join the podcast in a hilarious, information and feel good episode. We sampled some Old Fashions and had a great time. Raised in Montgomery, AL, Erica spent her undergraduate years at Auburn University studying English and French. She worked in the South of France at the Festival d’Avignon for a summer and once she came to terms with the fact that she likely would not achieve her lifelong dream of becoming Queen of England, she decided to take her talents for zealous advocacy to the University of Georgia School of Law. She was so devoted to UGA’s advocacy program that Erica (and her husband Mark) have the unique honor of being the only couple to ever be married in the Hatton-Lovejoy Courtroom at the law school. After graduating from UGA, Erica began her practice in coastal Alabama, but relocated to Atlanta where she spent nearly two decades in Atlanta focusing her practice on general liability and automobile insurance defense, bad faith and coverage litigation with several major defense firms in the city. She is licensed to practice in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee and has successfully litigated cases in both state and federal courts at the trial and appellate levels. In 2020, Erica and her husband relocated to Rabun County, where she worked remotely and began to reimagine her career. Inspired by the work he had done over the years, Erica reached out to Arman about embarking on a new chapter together. With two decades of litigation experience, Erica has developed a uniquely measured approach to the practice of law that centers on compassion, understanding, and integrity with a healthy dose of good humor and a touch of irreverence. Erica lives by the wise wisdom of Roadhouse’s James Dalton: ‘All you have to do is follow three simple rules. One, never underestimate your opponent. Expect the unexpected. Two, take it outside. Never start anything inside the bar unless it’s absolutely necessary. And three, be nice. . . until it’s time to not be nice.’” Erica recently moved to Auburn, Alabama with her husband Mark and three dogs Waylon, Jesse and Hank so they could all be closer to family. She set up shop in the Columbus office and, in addition to her Georgia cases, is handling the firm’s Alabama and Tennessee cases, usually with Waylon and/or Jesse in the office with her.

It's the middle of the week and we're excited for another amazing day in the auto industry. Today we're talking about how Stellantis replaced their North American president, Hyundai's new steering rig and Porsche's awkward typo.Stellantis announces a major shift in its North American operations, replacing COO Mark Stewart with Carlos Zarlenga, the current president of its Mexico unit.Zarlenga, with a decade of global automotive experience, including a role as president of General Motors South America, is set to take over on Feb. 1.Stewart's departure follows a challenging year for Stellantis in the U.S. market, marked by a 1.2 percent decline in sales and a costly labor agreement with the UAW.The change comes as Stellantis gears up to launch its first electric vehicles in North America, aiming to revitalize its brands like Dodge, Jeep, and Ram in the competitive EV space.Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, praised Zarlenga's leadership skills: "Carlos Zarlenga is the best leader... to drive the change in our business model towards electrification in the region."From the ASOTU Daily Pushback Email: Most great features have limitless applications; Hyundai's Ioniq 5 has a new steering feature that seems to have a very limited number of applications. The e-Corner System turns the wheels of the EV sideways, allowing it to spin in place, perform a semi-drift maneuver, parallel park, or, maybe most importantly, escape a tight parallel park situation. The Steer-by-Wire system means each of the vehicle's four wheels is independently controlled by electronic motors, which is pretty much restricted to EV-only use.Hyundai Mobis says it is adding more cameras, sensors, and projectors in cars with the feature for safety needs. They say the system is not designed for high-speed driving and has only been tested up to 50 MPH.The feature is expected to start rolling out in 2026.A Porsche Club of America member in Houston spotted a humorous typo in the Porsche 911's driver display, where "brake pads" are misspelled as "break pads."The error was discovered following a request for brake pad recommendations on a Texas PCA Facebook group, after the owner participated in a High Performance Driver Education course. The dashboard warning reads, "BRAKE WEAR: Brake pads worn....Change break pads...Driving permitted," ironically spelling 'brake' correctly in other instances. This minor gaffe on a high-end sports car, priced at around $115,000, highlights the importance of attention to detail, even in premium products. It's unknown if this typo is exclusive to the 911 or affects other Porsche models, but it's likely a simple software update could rectify the error.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion
