This playlist is 73% vinyl friendly. Not bad. The ‘cack handed’ HMV 1507 portable radiogram. When from? It’s old. An online post from nearly two decades ago… ‘… came across this rather strange record player, though quite admirably I resisted buying it! The casing is a bit weird in that the lid seems to cover the entire thing rather than sitting on a bottom half. Then a closer look at the record deck itself made me wrinkle the noble brow in surprise. The pickup arm rests at 90 degrees to the usual resting place. It looks almost back to front! Unfortunately it didn’t have a maker’s or model name, so unless someone can identify it and leave a comment then it will have to remain a mystery for another ten years or so… ‘ And then a decade later, the answer… ‘Your cack handed record player is an HMV 1507 portable radiogram. The type C cartridges almost never work when found now. It’s a cack handed design alright. The radio part is a transformerless AC/DC design but the record deck motor is AC only. Any track marked * has been given either a tiny or a slightly larger 41 Rooms tweak/edit/chop and the occasional tune might sound a bit dodgy, quality-wise. On top of that, the switch between different decades and production values never helps in the mix here. A duo out of Brooklyn, New York with more motif biziness and on exclusive ‘Clear Blue Smoke’ (with a signed 12″x12″ print, 500 copies) or ‘Coke Bottle Green’ vinyl. 18.34 LA RISSA – Surrender – Download only – 2026 Still with duos but from Brooklyn to Bradford, and never has ‘I wanted to knock your fucking lights out… ‘ sounded so dark wave pop. 22.45 BLONDSHELL – Heart Has To Work So Hard – Download only – 2026 Vocalist, Sabrina Teitelbaum is for some unclear reason doing her best to physically show us her heart on the accompanying promo shot (upcoming Violins album cover?) and I get the feeling her sound is possibly influenced by a bunch of bands in the ’90’s and noughties that passed me by. Christchurch City Councillors have this morning agreed to contribute an extra 15 million dollars to the rebuild of the Christ Church cathedral. The rebuild of the earthquake-damaged cathedral has been on hold since 2024 because of a funding shortfall of around 45 million dollars. The fate of the cathedral has divided opinion across the city and beyond for a long time, some believe it should be restored, saying it's an important part of the city's history, while others say it's a waste of money and resources. When I was a kid in the 80's, I used to listen to a local radio show called On The Wire, presented by Steve Barker. Steve and John Peel were single handedly responsible for me finding bands and artists like African Headcharge, Sonic Youth, Tackhead, Test Dept, Cabaret Voltaire, Mark Stewart and The Mafia, Keith Le Blanc, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry and so many others. Have you ever heard a color, or seen a piece of music? Maybe you’ve tasted a sunset, or felt a particular smell? If so, you might have synesthesia. It’s a phenomenon in which one or more sensory pathways blend in the brain to create a new experience. Researchers aren’t sure how many people have synesthesia, but estimates range from 1 in 200 to 1 in 20 people.   Elizabeth Schwartz is a freelance writer and music historian from Portland; Forest Mountain Lion is a musician from Eugene; and James Duckwell is a career and technical education teacher at Portland’s Roosevelt High School. They all join us to talk about their experiences with synesthesia, along with Mark Stewart, a professor of psychology at Willamette University who studies the phenomenon.

Adrian Sherwood is known for his work as a producer, and while that term brings to mind those who simply put their often-subtle imprint on the recordings in which they’re involved, Sherwood’s approach is distinctive and heavily informed by the Dub music which he worked to distribute and to play as a DJ in London in the 1970’s. He has brought that sensibility primarily, but not exclusively, to electronic and electronic dance music, as well as many remixes of work by bands ranging from Depeche Mode, Sinead O’Connor, Primal Scream, Coldcut, and Skinny Puppy. His most recent solo record is 2025’s The Collapse of Everything. Sherwood will perform at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, TN in March of 2026. The Christ Church Cathedral rebuild could be the last milestone for the Garden City to thrive. Work will begin next year to complete the nave, entrance way, tower, and restore the rose window by 2030. This halves the funding to about $40 million, with the Anglican Church pledging another $20 million. Mānuka honey exporter Comvita has received a takeover offer from a subsidiary of Christchurch billionaire Mark Stewart's Masthead Limited - Florenz. It's offering 80 cents a share, equalling $56.4 million. The offer has received unanimous support from Comvita's board and its two largest shareholders, which own a combined 18.3 percent stake. How do we support left-handed children in a predominantly right-handed world? Mark Stewart, founder of Left n Write Ltd, shares his journey and insights on the unique challenges faced by left-handed individuals, particularly in educational settings. With over 1 million left-handed children in schools across England, Mark emphasizes the lack of awareness and training for educators on how to assist these students effectively. Mark started his small business about 30 years ago as a result of trying to find left-handed scissors for his youngest son when he was 4. Mark's wife Heather had no training in helping left-handed children during her Teacher Training so they started to campaign with their left-handed MP, Peter Luff, to change the Education system to be proactive rather than passive.They had meetings with Ministers, questions and a 30 minute adjournment debate in the House of Commons, produced a training video in 1999 (now downloadable/interactive and was updated last year) as well as writing an information/activity book titled "So You Think They're Left Handed?" and 3 books titled "Left Hand Writing Skills". We have also produced other resources specifically for left-handed children in education. For Mark Stewart, becoming CEO and President of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company was a lifetime dream realized. Researchers aren’t sure how many people have synesthesia, but estimates range from 1 in 200 to 1 in 20 people. Elizabeth Schwartz is a freelance writer and music historian from Portland; Forest Mountain Lion is a musician from Eugene; and James Duckwell is a career and technical education teacher at Portland’s Roosevelt High School. They all join us to talk about their experiences with synesthesia, along with Mark Stewart, a professor of psychology at Willamette University who studies the phenomenon.

My 2004 UGA Law School Classmate Erica Parson and her husband, Mark Stewart, join the podcast in a hilarious, information and feel good episode. We sampled some Old Fashions and had a great time. Raised in Montgomery, AL, Erica spent her undergraduate years at Auburn University studying English and French. She worked in the South of France at the Festival d’Avignon for a summer and once she came to terms with the fact that she likely would not achieve her lifelong dream of becoming Queen of England, she decided to take her talents for zealous advocacy to the University of Georgia School of Law. She was so devoted to UGA’s advocacy program that Erica (and her husband Mark) have the unique honor of being the only couple to ever be married in the Hatton-Lovejoy Courtroom at the law school. After graduating from UGA, Erica began her practice in coastal Alabama, but relocated to Atlanta where she spent nearly two decades in Atlanta focusing her practice on general liability and automobile insurance defense, bad faith and coverage litigation with several major defense firms in the city. She is licensed to practice in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee and has successfully litigated cases in both state and federal courts at the trial and appellate levels. In 2020, Erica and her husband relocated to Rabun County, where she worked remotely and began to reimagine her career. Inspired by the work he had done over the years, Erica reached out to Arman about embarking on a new chapter together. With two decades of litigation experience, Erica has developed a uniquely measured approach to the practice of law that centers on compassion, understanding, and integrity with a healthy dose of good humor and a touch of irreverence. Erica lives by the wise wisdom of Roadhouse’s James Dalton: ‘All you have to do is follow three simple rules. One, never underestimate your opponent. Expect the unexpected. Two, take it outside. Never start anything inside the bar unless it’s absolutely necessary. And three, be nice. . . until it’s time to not be nice.’” Erica recently moved to Auburn, Alabama with her husband Mark and three dogs Waylon, Jesse and Hank so they could all be closer to family. She set up shop in the Columbus office and, in addition to her Georgia cases, is handling the firm’s Alabama and Tennessee cases, usually with Waylon and/or Jesse in the office with her.
