On today's episode, Johanna and Derek are joined by NOlympics LA coalition member and community organizer Jonny Coleman to talk about the LA28 Olympic bid, the powerful people behind the Games, the harms associated with LA28, and how the Olympics may be quite far beyond any possibility of reform. Jonny Coleman is a writer and organizer based in Los Angeles and a member of the NOlympics LA coalition, which was launched in 2017 by the Housing and Homelessness Committee of the LA Chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America. The Coalition has since expanded to include over two dozen partner organizations based in LA and California, as well as a growing transnational movement with dozens of groups around the world. Jonny has published widely on the harms associated with the Olympics in Jacobin Magazine, Knock LA, The Nation, The Appeal, Deadspin, Slate, and many others. Follow NOlympics LA on Twitter! After a week off, Miguel shares Part 1 of his Cancel the Olympics series this week. In Part 1 of the series, Miguel spoke to Eric and Taylor, 2 members of NOlympics Los Angeles, "launched by the Housing & Homelessness Committee of the Los Angeles chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America in 2017. The coalition has since expanded to include over two dozen partner organizations based in Los Angeles and California, as well as a growing transnational movement with dozens of groups around the world (https://nolympicsla.com/about/)." Follow them on Twitter: @NOlympicsLA. First, Eric and Taylor explained how Los Angeles won the 2028 Olympics instead of the 2024 Olympics and broke down who the prominent stakeholders were that made sure Los Angeles hosted the 2028 games. Also, Miguel, Eric, and Taylor discuss the legacy of the 1984 Olympics and its impact on Black and Brown people, the working-class, and the poor. In particular, Eric and Taylor explain how LAPD Chief Daryl Gates conducted gang sweeps via Operation Hammer before the 1984 games. They also speak about next month's Summer Olympics Games in Tokyo and the work the comrades in Japan have done to fight the capitalist Olympic machine, plus more! Lastly, Miguel gives you his Molotov MVP for episode 21, Las Vegas Raiders Defensive End Carl Nassib, who last week was the first active NFL player to come out as openly gay. He ends the podcast with a different approach to his Chicana/o Sports History segment. On Saturday, June 19, 2021, a video went viral on social media of an ugly, racist ending to a CIF San Diego Section championship High School Boys basketball game between Coronado High School and Orange Glen High school. It is important to note that Coronado High School is predominately white and from an affluent area of San Diego, and Orange Gen High school is predominantly Mexican and from a working-class San Diego area city, Escondido. After Coronado's buzzer-beating three-pointer in overtime to beat Orange Glen 60-57, players and fans associated with Coronado started hurling corn tortillas towards Orange Glen players and coaches. Orange Glen players, coaches, and fans were outraged and called the incident racist. As a result, a Press conference was held on Tuesday, June 22, 2021, by players, parents, coaches, and Orange Glen High School supporters, condemning this racist act, and the Head Boys Basketball Coach of Coronado High School was fired. Naomi Karavani hosts this VIP special. Anders Lee interviews Gigi Droesch, who organizes with NOlympics LA. The Olympics has historically had a negative impact on the poor in the communities it comes to. With an LA Olympics planned for 2028, Droesch and her cohort of organizers hope to shine a light on that history and convince the city of LA not to go through with hosting the event. Naomi Karavani reports on the British lawsuit that would force Uber to treat its drivers like employees. Uber’s response to this lawsuit was to threaten to stop operating anywhere that wants them to give the people who make money for their app the basic respect workers deserve. Karavani also reports on the corporate response to people not wanting to work in their low-paying industries. The rich are shocked that they’re finding it hard to pay poverty wages for terrible jobs. Natalie McGill looks into how Big Tech is plotting to defang privacy bills introduced across the nation after California passed one last year.
Episode 3: “Rings of Hell III: The Movement Against The IOC” -- This week @nolympicsla explore Olympic resistance in both a city that was ravaged by the Games (Rio 2016) and a city that thwarted an Olympic bid (Boston 2024). Despite some local differences, the fight is against the same notoriously corrupt and unaccountable private institution: the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which creates heightened militarization, displacement, and authoritarianism in the name of extracting profit. The struggle against this form of neoliberal lotteryism is both a hyper-local and transnational one. Please enjoy a conversation with members of Rio on Watch, No Boston Olympics, and NOlympics LA. ‘Rings of Hell’ segment originally produced with @knockdotla: 10/16/18

We review the shady history of the games, the role of Epstein connected LA power broker Casey Wasserman in bringing them to the city, and the devastating impact of the 1984 Olympics on LA. Yasha Levine is an investigative journalist and the author of Surveillance Valley: The Secret Military History of the Internet (PublicAffairs, 2018). We spoke recently about the response to COVID-19 in the city of Los Angeles, where he currently lives. Since it's Yasha, the conversation quickly turned to surveillance and empire and the fact that the systemic collapse of the USA (ca. 2020) is largely the result of the chickens coming home to roost — as web 2.0 influencer Ward Churchill might say. After taping that call I decided to expand the discussion a bit by bringing on Anne Orchier, an organizer with NOlympics LA, about why the Olympics is bad news and how Los Angeles is, much like the rest of the country, experiencing "disaster capitalism" run amok. Our friend Anne of Valley Video and NOlympics LA joins us to analyze what we consider to be THE definitive contemporary Christian movie. The one that inspired us to start this podcast. Kevin Sorbo stars as a celebrity atheist author whose near death experience changes his spiritual perspective. The supporting cast is star-studded too - Sean Hannity appears, country legend Travis Tritt is in the mix, reformed former mob boss Michael Franzese plays "Pastor Vinny", and Sorbo's wife Sam and his two kids figure prominently. We went extra long on this one so we could talk about everything. We hope you enjoy! Please excuse our sound quality on this one as the quarantine caught us off guard. NOlympics LA and KNOCK.LA’s 10 part podcast series on the negative effects of the LA Olympics continues with Episode 4, “The Eric Garcetti Podcast Special.” In this episode, we unpack LA’s occasional Mayor, Eric Michael Garcetti, who has the worst kept secret in local politics (an upcoming presidential run), and explore MEG’s privilege, his hijacking of marginalized groups’ identities for political advancement, his fear of adversarial journalism, and what his true goals are. And we bring it all together by exploring how the Olympics is the cynical vanity project Garcetti’s using to try to make you forget he works for developers, police, and other elite interests. So turn on, tune in, and drop out; it’s time for the MEGisode.
Mayor Eric Garcetti is pinning his Presidential hopes on a successful bid for the 2028 Olympic Games, but a dedicated, and growing, group of Los Angeles organizers is rallying to stop him. The Olympics are sold to cities as essentially free by leveraging corporate sponsors to foot the bill: this is disingenuous. Rachel Reyes (@Rachel_Reyes) joined me at Ground Game HQ to talk about the hidden costs of the Olympics. How will the games drive displacement? How will the unhoused be further criminalized? How much more money will we funnel to LAPD to arrest and harass our neighbors? As the International Olympic Committee struggles to find host cities now is the time to fight back locally and to organize our neighbors to demand that our voices be heard. Today we're joined by Claire Lobenfeld and Jonny Coleman of NOlympics LA, a campaign launched by members of the Los Angeles chapter of Democratic Socialists of America to stop the 2028 Olympics games from coming to Los Angeles. We talk about how large shiny development projects get forced onto small tax bases in order to squeeze as much money out of constituents as possible. We also talk about how Little Giants should be interpreted as a product and statement of the proletariat.
"Lotteryism" is the use of the media by large corporations to obscure solidarity in favor of morality tales of “making it”. It’s the atomization of parties of mutual interest by lording over them the promise of something greater than what they could achieve if they simply banded together. Lotteryism is an ideology and a PR operation. Lotteryism, above all, renders us politically impotent. Lotteryism is a scam practiced by large corporations in various iterations to extract resources from local governments in hopes they can “win” their money, "jobs", or presence in their city. Cities compete in a race-to-the-bottom to offer billionaire team owners the best tax breaks and enticing perks. Bill Gates uses it to pit state education departments against one another for funding. Corporations like Mercedes-Benz and Amazon use it to get massive tax breaks and sweetheart deals in cities that want their headquarters. Walmart uses it against local governments to skirt minimum wage requirements and crush unions. The media––namely local media––mindlessly go along with these spectacles without any context or critical analysis. How is the Lotteryism scam practiced? Who does it benefit? And, most importantly, how can we fight it? With guest Anne Orchier, an organizer with NOlympics LA. (And stay tuned for Part II, next week, when we'll be joined by Dave Zirin, sports editor at The Nation.)
