EP125: “I was on fire. I was fighting well. Then I've got to one of the most important fights I just needed to get through. This fight was probably the most important fight to get that chance to have the Olympic gold medal. I received a head kick with two seconds to go, and two seconds just wasn't enough to get the points back.”Jordan was on the pathway to Tokyo Olympics 2020 when he missed his dream by two seconds. Rather than wallow in the disappointment Jordan has shown incredible resilience to jump back up and keep going. Jordan was very aware of the risks in this sport. His father was also a world and European karate champion. He was also aware of what a financial strain it could be to fund full time sport. For many years Jordan worked full time training others before turning his focus on training himself in the evenings. “...before my world final, I got a message the night before that my phone bill had bounced...I was 22 at the time…Then I won my world final, very convincingly…and still came back home, and couldn't pay my phone bill because I still had no money.”We also talk about: How mindset is the most important toolBeing run over by a car and told he would never walk againChoosing between football and karateThe life of a full time athleteFollowing in his father's footstepsJordan's work with charity Inspire YouJordan is active on Instagram and is preparing to climb Mount Kilimanjaro with a group of underprivileged young people for the charity Inspire You.  Thank you to our sponsor SeventySeven Wealth Management, a family business with their family at its core, advising you and your family for all eventualities.Nicole Bremner is an investor and podcaster. John Hoke, Nike's chief design officer, intimately understands how to move design from an object to a feeling. At the company over the past three decades, he has refined his approach to center around creating designs that serve wearers in practical yet unexpected ways, and that often redefine what sportswear can look like and do. Hoke often tells his team that “the goal is goosebumps”—to develop ideas so great that they can be physically felt. Hoke's role in Nike's legacy of innovation runs deep. He joined the Beaverton, Oregon–based company in 1992, at age 28, after studying architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and working as a model-maker for the late architect Michael Graves. Hoke, who is dyslexic, considers drawing his first language, his way of articulating the reactions he has to the things he sees. Connecting images with emotions is his portal to new ideas, which he has realized across many forward-thinking projects, ranging from singlets made from recycled polyester and water bottles, produced for the 2000 Summer Olympics; to Space Hippie, a footwear collection inspired by life on Mars; to the 2020 Nike Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT%, a shoe with a carbon-fiber plate that literally propels wearers forward. Even as Nike marks its 50th anniversary this year, Hoke has his sights set on the future, refusing to settle for what has worked in the past. Design, he believes, is a continual, iterative process of improvement. On this episode, Hoke talks with Andrew about how physical movement amplifies the senses, design as an act of optimism, and why perfection is a trap.Special thanks to our Season 5 sponsor, L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Full transcript[04:16] Nike[07:11] Nike Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT%[12:43] Nike FlyEase[13:06] Nike Air VaporMax [16:12] Nike's FY20 Impact Report [18:03] Space Hippie[19:36] Nike Considered Design[45:29] Michael Graves[01:02:19] Nike: Better Is Temporary[01:04:26] LeBron James Innovation Center[01:04:26] Serena Williams Building

We've talked about the yips, but what about the twisties? The infamous variety of yips that afflicts aerial athletes, the twisties is a term which describes the experience of athletes who lose their sense of proprioception, or their awareness of where their bodies are in space. It was this unusual malady that led to Simone Biles stepping away from the 2020 Summer Olympics, and although she may be the best known athlete to have battled the twisties, Simone Biles is far from the only athlete who has experienced it. To better understand this strange and dangerous phenomenon, Justin sits down with Aimee Boorman, one of the top gymnastics coaches in the world and the former coach of Simone Biles herself. After reaching the pinnacle of her career at the 2016 Games in Rio, Helen suffered a concussion. The effects revealed themselves over time and, she says, changed her a lot — mentally and emotionally. But she was determined to heal. Helen talks about struggling with her mental health after her injury … about losing all of her confidence right after she won the gold … and about why she considers her biggest accomplishment to be her return to wrestling. Helen came back to the sport with a new perspective. She earned a second medal this past summer at the Tokyo Olympics. It was a bronze — and without question it's the medal she's most proud of. Ep. #16, Caroline and Amir Zonozi, the CEO & Co-Founder of Zoomph, reflect on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and how women athletes dominated both in athletic competition - and when it came to social media reach & impact. Zoomph is a leader in digital intelligence at the intersection of sports and sponsorship analysis. During the 2020 Olympics, Amir and his team measured the power of influence of Team USA's women athletes by analyzing the data around social media reach, impact and generated value. What they found was that women athletes largely preoccupied the online conversations during Tokyo 2020. The top moments included:Suni Lee generating $6M in social value from 9 Instagram posts with an unprecedented 47% follower interaction rate.Simone Biles' tweet thanking fans for supporting her decision to withdraw that generated over 100 million organic impressions and $2.7 million in social value.Allyson Felix's name being mentioned on social more than 10K times with 52M impressions worth almost $900k in social value.Katie Ledecky generated 8.5 million organic impressions from her Instagram, with an engagement rate of 12.83% - which was a full 2 points higher than the official @TeamUSA's Instagram engagement rate.Even beyond the digital space, Tokyo 2020 was an absolutely glass-shattering Olympics for women athletes. Looking specifically at Team USA, 53.6% of American Olympians were women, and women won 66 of Team USA's 113 medals - accounting for 58.4% of the medals won. Women's sports also received 59.1% of primetime coverage from NBC in the U.S., which was the highest percentage that women's sports have ever received in the history of NBC's Olympic broadcasts. In this episode, listen to Amir and Caroline discuss all of the ways in which women athletes won the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This episode was recorded on August 17, 2021. Mindful Performance Coach Taylor Brown explains how powerful the mind is at shaping athletic training, performance, and handling one's negative  inner thoughts. Taylor is the founder and director of EnduroMind, a high-performance coaching program. In this episode, Taylor goes over his career as a rower and how he coaches Olympians on the mindset of performance. He also explains how to understand the stress and anxiety of the moment and have acceptance around it.The Mind-Body Gap“Push to the limit” is a common phrase often used in training. But what happens when the mind tells what the body is not? Taylor explains that this is what he calls the “Mind-Body Gap.” When at a high-level effort, the mind will convince you that you have reached 100 percent when in reality, the body is only around 80 percent of its physiological limit. The gap lies in the 20 percent you can physically give. Therefore, understanding the body's signals is a must to work with the body and not in opposition to it. Taylor expounds that when dealing with this gap, he asks himself whether he is physically capable of continuing despite the discomfort at the moment. Invariably, his answer is usually yes. He used his team's race against Harvard as an example, where he gave his all at the last 30 seconds despite the fatigue.  About Taylor Brown:After a decade in high-performance sport, Taylor knows what holds many athletes back from realizing their true potential, and it's not talent or intelligence. It is one's relationship to their inner experiences like thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. Taylor seeks to empower athletes and coaches through building mindful awareness, acceptance, and aligning their actions with their values. Taylor is a Certified Professional Coach and is trained in Mindful Sport Performance Enhancement. Taylor also produces a podcast, Mindful Sport Performance Podcast, with Drs. Keith Kaufman and Tim Pineau. Taylor holds a B.A. in Psychology from Brown University, where he competed on the men's D1 rowing team,  placing top three nationally. Have you seen Ted Lasso?  Well, I haven't, but everyone I know keeps telling me I need to. But I'm not a soccer fan.  You'll still love it.  I don't have Apple TV.  Get it!  So I finally decided yesterday to drop the five dollars a month so I can watch it, plus The Morning Show, and some other stuff.I really didn't want to add another monthly bill - even $5 - on top of Netflix, Disney Plus, and YouTube TV. In fact, I just decided to drop an extra $10 a month so I can get 4K channels.  I figure I have a 4K TV, may as well watch the Olympics in 4K.  Not gonna lie, it's pretty sweet. Can't wait for football season. What does all of this have to do with podcasts? Well, it appears a number of large media companies are offering premium (meaning paid) content through Apple, Spotify, or other means. But there's more of them than you can count.   Which ones do you choose?  For me, it took a TON of peer pressure to cave on Apple TV, and it took something brand new and cutting edge (sports in 4K) to up my YouTube TV.  Before you start asking your listeners to pay for what you put out - ask yourself - is it good enough?  Can it compete for that monthly $5 or $10 with Disney Plus and Hulu and Netflix?  Now, if you're providing some really unique, niche content, the answer may be yes. But I think for most of us, the answer is no.  I still think it's hard to monetize a podcast, but the easier route is through advertisers.  Your podcast listeners are much more valuable than those little hearts on Facebook or the Gram.  Why? Because they are more engaged.   They aren't scrolling through; they are actively listening. Even if you don't have many listeners, your basket weaving podcast might be really attractive to a basket company.Speaking of advertising, Crooked Media's Pod Save America is now opening themselves up to ads in other countries -  apparently there's quite an appetite for American politics in Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. ACast will handle the international ads.If you love the Olympics, NBC has FOUR - count 'em four - podcasts on their Olympics channel in Apple Podcasts - The Podium, In The Village, On Her Turf, and My New Favorite Olympian.  They're free to listen to.Speaking of  Apple Podcasts, they're looking for a head of content.  I assume duties include screaming at the app development team daily, thinking you're the only game in town, and putting out dumpster fires.Podcasting OG Evo Terra says we have entered the "chaotic era" of podcasting.  He says no huge companies are coming to save us, diversify your podcast's assets and footprint, and hold on for dear life. Here's his Podcast Pontifications https://podcastpontifications.com/episode/can-you-survive-podcastings-chaotic-eraTold you a couple weeks ago about everyone freaking out about the Audacity editing app and it's new privacy policy -well they've got a new policy, promising not to store IP addresses or scare away kids under 13.As James Cridland from PodNews points out, that's likely due to the reporting of podcast media and resulting outcry.  https://github.com/audacity/audacity/discussions/1353Podcast host Buzzsprout is offering dynamic ad insertion on all plans.  Dynamic Ad Insertion puts ads in your show based on when a listener hears it, where they are, or other factors. For example, if you have something  time sensitive, like a Podcast Movement tease,  you can turn it on or off for any episode.  It's my hope that this will come to other podcast hosts for all tiered plans, making it the norm in the industry.MTV is teaming up with iHeart to re-release classic episodes of Behind The Music, as a podcast. A friendly reminder to check and see if your new podcast's name has already been claimed.  Maybe not a huge deal if you're an average Joe, but if you're rich and famous (or hope to be), you gotta do your homework.   Actress and Michigan native Kristen Bell tried to release a show called Shattered Glass.  Name was already taken, so she had to rename it - it's now called "We Are Supported By..."For my fellow Syracuse grads, Carmelo Anthony is creating a podcast version of his YouTube series, "What's in Your Glass?"  Sadly, it's wine, not Orange Juice. (rimshot). The Clubhouse app is now out of beta and available for everyone on iOS and Android.  Will be curious what Mark Cuban, who founded rival Fireside, has to say when he keynotes Podcast Movement in Nashville next week. And speaking OF Podcast Movement, I'm vaxxed, masked, and really excited for the return of the in person event.  They will have recording areas set up, so time permitting, I may do a bonus episode next week from Nashville.  Otherwise, expect a TON of information when I get back.  Finally, a big thank you to Rock, Arielle, and the team at Squadcast - who were able to find a video solution that worked for me. This is my first video recorded on Squadcast. So, until next time, stay healthy and stay safe.  Lata!

“Now that I've been running for over a decade, I could just keep adding things and adding things. And by the end of the day, I would be training 24/7, adding all these new exercises. And I do gain a lot of confidence from doing these things, but then I like to assess what's actually helping me." We're joined by Joe Klecker, 2021 U.S. Olympian in the 10,000 meters.Joe has an amazing story and it was so fun exploring his journey to making the 2021 Olympic team. One of the things that stands out about Joe's story is how both his mother and father were world class runners back in their day. In fact, Joe's mother was an Olympic runner as well! Joe displays so much perspective on making his first Olympic team four years earlier than he originally expected. He said something we all can benefit from when he spoke about competing at his first Olympics: this first big experience is a stepping stone towards more big moments. It's easy to get overwhelmed and forget that we're all on a journey and that every moment, no matter how big, is still a moment to learn and to grow for future opportunities. Joe may only be 24 years old but he shares a lot of wisdom throughout our conversation.Timestamped Show Notes(3:25) Continuing an Olympic legacy…(5:43) A couple of tricks that worked for Jon…(7:16) Key advice to make the 10,000-meter team…(11:12) Making all the right decisions in the last portion of the race…(14:31) “I got a lot of confidence in where I ran my 10k PR, the conditions were a bit warm and I knew that I was well in shape to run the standard.”(16:32) The power of a Coach's belief…(18:37) “You're not just running as hard as you can to hit that pace.
