At the DNC last week, the Warriors coach and former Bulls star Steve Kerr spoke of his excitement at his return to Chicago's United Center, the home of some his greatest basketball triumphs. According to the Columbia University historian Frank Andre Guridy, there's nothing coincidental about this convergence of American politics and sports. In his intriguing new book, THE STADIUM, Guridy reimagines America through the history of sports stadiums like Candlestick Park & Madison Square Gardens. It's a story of politics, protest and play in which these sports stadiums act as mirrors and prisms to all the most troubling and hopeful aspects of American history.Frank A. Guridy is Professor of History and African American and African Diaspora Studies and the Executive Director of the Eric H. Holder Initiative for Civil and Political Rights at Columbia University. He is an award-winning historian whose recent research has focused on sport history, urban history, and the history of American social movements. His latest book, The Sports Revolution: How Texas Changed the Culture of American Athletics (University of Texas Press, 2021) explored how Texas-based sports entrepreneurs and athletes from marginalized backgrounds transformed American sporting culture during the 1960s and 1970s, the highpoint of the Black Freedom and Second-Wave feminist movements. Guridy is also a leading scholar of the Black Freedom Movement in the United States and in other parts of the African Diaspora. His first book, Forging Diaspora: Afro-Cubans and African Americans in a World of Empire and Jim Crow (University of North Carolina Press, 2010), won the Elsa Goveia Book Prize from the Association of Caribbean Historians and the Wesley-Logan Book Prize, conferred by the American Historical Association. He is also the co-editor of Beyond el Barrio: Everyday Life in Latino/a America (NYU Press, 2010), with Gina Pérez and Adrian Burgos, Jr. His articles have appeared in Kalfou, Radical History Review, Caribbean Studies, Social Text, and Cuban Studies. His writing and commentary on sport, society, and politics have been published in Public Books, Columbia News, NBC News.com and the Washington Post. He has also appeared on a wide variety of podcasts, radio, and TV programs, including the Edge of Sports podcast by The Nation, Burn it All Down, End of Sport, Texas Public Radio, the Houston Chronicle's Sports Nation, Al Jazeera's “The Listening Post,” WNYC Public Radio, among others. His fellowships and awards include the Scholar in Residence Fellowship at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and the Ray A. Billington Professorship in American History at Occidental College and the Huntington Library. He is also an award-winning teacher, receiving the Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award from the University of Texas at Austin in 2010, and the Mark Van Doren Award for Teaching at Columbia in 2019. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: MIRI 2024 Mission and Strategy Update, published by Malo on January 5, 2024 on LessWrong. As we announced back in October, I have taken on the senior leadership role at MIRI as its CEO. It's a big pair of shoes to fill, and an awesome responsibility that I'm honored to take on. There have been several changes at MIRI since our 2020 strategic update, so let's get into it.[1] The short version: We think it's very unlikely that the AI alignment field will be able to make progress quickly enough to prevent human extinction and the loss of the future's potential value, that we expect will result from loss of control to smarter-than-human AI systems. However, developments this past year like the release of ChatGPT seem to have shifted the Overton window in a lot of groups. There's been a lot more discussion of extinction risk from AI, including among policymakers, and the discussion quality seems greatly improved. This provides a glimmer of hope. While we expect that more shifts in public opinion are necessary before the world takes actions that sufficiently change its course, it now appears more likely that governments could enact meaningful regulations to forestall the development of unaligned, smarter-than-human AI systems. It also seems more possible that humanity could take on a new megaproject squarely aimed at ending the acute risk period. As such, in 2023, MIRI shifted its strategy to pursue three objectives: Policy: Increase the probability that the major governments of the world end up coming to some international agreement to halt progress toward smarter-than-human AI, until humanity's state of knowledge and justified confidence about its understanding of relevant phenomena has drastically changed; and until we are able to secure these systems such that they can't fall into the hands of malicious or incautious actors.[2] Communications: Share our models of the situation with a broad audience, especially in cases where talking about an important consideration could help normalize discussion of it. Research: Continue to invest in a portfolio of research. This includes technical alignment research (though we've become more pessimistic that such work will have time to bear fruit if policy interventions fail to buy the research field more time), as well as research in support of our policy and communications goals.[3] We see the communications work as instrumental support for our policy objective. We also see candid and honest communication as a way to bring key models and considerations into the Overton window, and we generally think that being honest in this way tends to be a good default. Although we plan to pursue all three of these priorities, it's likely that policy and communications will be a higher priority for MIRI than research going forward.[4] The rest of this post will discuss MIRI's trajectory over time and our current strategy. In one or more future posts, we plan to say more about our policy/comms efforts and our research plans. Note that this post will assume that you're already reasonably familiar with MIRI and AGI risk; if you aren't, I recommend checking out Eliezer Yudkowsky's recent short TED talk, along with some of the resources cited on the TED page: " A.I. Poses 'Risk of Extinction,' Industry Leaders Warn", New York Times " We must slow down the race to god-like AI", Financial Times " Pausing AI Developments Isn't Enough. We Need to Shut it All Down", TIME " AGI Ruin: A List of Lethalities", AI Alignment Forum MIRI's mission Throughout its history, MIRI's goal has been to ensure that the long-term future goes well, with a focus on increasing the probability that humanity can safely navigate the transition to a world with smarter-than-human AI. If humanity can safely navigate the emergence of these systems, we believe this will lead to unpre...

In 2023, MIRI has shifted focus in the direction of broad public communication—see, for example, our recent TED talk, our piece in TIME magazine “Pausing AI Developments Isn't Enough. We Need to Shut it All Down”, and our appearances on various podcasts. While we're continuing to support various technical research programs at MIRI, this is no longer our top priority, at least for the foreseeable future.Coinciding with this shift in focus, there have also been many organizational changes at MIRI over the last several months, and we are somewhat overdue to announce them in public. The big changes are as follows.Source:https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/NjtHt55nFbw3gehzY/announcing-miri-s-new-ceo-and-leadership-teamNarrated for LessWrong by TYPE III AUDIO.Share feedback on this narration.[125+ Karma Post] ✓

Shermer and Brin discuss: AI and AGI • are they existential threats? • the alignment problem • Large Language Models • ChatGPT, GPT-4, GPT-5, and beyond • the Future of Life Institute's Open Letter calling for a pause on “giant AI experiments” • Asilomar AI principles • Eliezer Yudkowsky's Time OpEd: “Shut it All Down” • laws and ethics. David Brin earned a Bachelor's degree in astronomy from Caltech, a Master's in electrical engineering from UC San Diego, and a PhD in astronomy from UC San Diego. From 1983 to 1986 he was a postdoc research fellow at the California Space Institute at UC San Diego, where he also helped establish the Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination. An advisor to NASA's Innovative & Advanced Concepts program, David appears frequently on shows such as Nova, The Universe and Life After People, speaking about science and future trends. His first non-fiction book, The Transparent Society: Will Technology Make Us Choose Between Freedom and Privacy?, won the Freedom of Speech Award of the American Library Association. His second nonfiction book is Vivid Tomorrows: Science Fiction and Hollywood. He is best known for his science fiction, for which he has won numerous major awards, including the Hugo, Locus, Campbell, and Nebula Awards. His novel The Postman was adapted into a feature film starring Kevin Costner. He even has a minor planet named after him: 5748 Davebrin. He has written a number of articles on Artificial Intelligence, most recently in response to the call for a moratorium on AI research by many leading AI researchers and scientists, which he titled “The Only Way Out of the AI Dilemma.” His website is davidbrin.com.
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Pausing AI Developments Isn't Enough. We Need to Shut it All Down, published by Eliezer Yudkowsky on April 8, 2023 on LessWrong. (Published in TIME on March 29.) An open letter published today calls for “all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4.” This 6-month moratorium would be better than no moratorium. I have respect for everyone who stepped up and signed it. It's an improvement on the margin. I refrained from signing because I think the letter is understating the seriousness of the situation and asking for too little to solve it. The key issue is not “human-competitive” intelligence (as the open letter puts it); it's what happens after AI gets to smarter-than-human intelligence. Key thresholds there may not be obvious, we definitely can't calculate in advance what happens when, and it currently seems imaginable that a research lab would cross critical lines without noticing. Many researchers steeped in these issues, including myself, expect that the most likely result of building a superhumanly smart AI, under anything remotely like the current circumstances, is that literally everyone on Earth will die. Not as in “maybe possibly some remote chance,” but as in “that is the obvious thing that would happen.” It's not that you can't, in principle, survive creating something much smarter than you; it's that it would require precision and preparation and new scientific insights, and probably not having AI systems composed of giant inscrutable arrays of fractional numbers. Without that precision and preparation, the most likely outcome is AI that does not do what we want, and does not care for us nor for sentient life in general. That kind of caring is something that could in principle be imbued into an AI but we are not ready and do not currently know how. Absent that caring, we get “the AI does not love you, nor does it hate you, and you are made of atoms it can use for something else.” The likely result of humanity facing down an opposed superhuman intelligence is a total loss. Valid metaphors include “a 10-year-old trying to play chess against Stockfish 15”, “the 11th century trying to fight the 21st century,” and “Australopithecus trying to fight Homo sapiens“. To visualize a hostile superhuman AI, don't imagine a lifeless book-smart thinker dwelling inside the internet and sending ill-intentioned emails. Visualize an entire alien civilization, thinking at millions of times human speeds, initially confined to computers—in a world of creatures that are, from its perspective, very stupid and very slow. A sufficiently intelligent AI won't stay confined to computers for long. In today's world you can email DNA strings to laboratories that will produce proteins on demand, allowing an AI initially confined to the internet to build artificial life forms or bootstrap straight to postbiological molecular manufacturing. If somebody builds a too-powerful AI, under present conditions, I expect that every single member of the human species and all biological life on Earth dies shortly thereafter. There's no proposed plan for how we could do any such thing and survive. OpenAI's openly declared intention is to make some future AI do our AI alignment homework. Just hearing that this is the plan ought to be enough to get any sensible person to panic. The other leading AI lab, DeepMind, has no plan at all. An aside: None of this danger depends on whether or not AIs are or can be conscious; it's intrinsic to the notion of powerful cognitive systems that optimize hard and calculate outputs that meet sufficiently complicated outcome criteria. With that said, I'd be remiss in my moral duties as a human if I didn't also mention that we have no idea how to determine whether AI systems are aware of themselves—since we have ...

Should we let machines flood our information channels with propaganda and untruth? Should we automate away all the jobs, including the fulfilling ones? Should we develop nonhuman minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete and replace us? Should we risk loss of control of our civilization?", considérant ainsi des risques de court terme, moyen terme et long terme. La position la plus radicales sur les risques liés à l'IA, celle d'Eliezer Yudkowsky : "Many researchers steeped in these issues, including myself, expect that the most likely result of building a superhumanly smart AI, under anything remotely like the current circumstances, is that literally everyone on Earth will die. Not as in “maybe possibly some remote chance,” but as in “that is the obvious thing that would happen.” (tribune dans le magazine Time Pausing AI Developments Isn't Enough. We Need to Shut it All Down, écouter aussi mon précédent épisode de podcast) Chimp beats students at computer game (article dans le magazine Nature, en vidéo sur Youtube) Why Are Our Brains Shrinking? (University of San Francisco) "over the last 20,000 years alone, human brains have shrunk from 1,500 cubic centimeters (cc) to 1,350 cc, roughly the size of a tennis ball."

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Pausing AI Developments Isn't Enough. We Need to Shut it All Down by Eliezer Yudkowsky, published by jacquesthibs on March 29, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. New article in Time Ideas by Eliezer Yudkowsky. Here's some selected quotes. In reference to the letter that just came out (discussion here): We are not going to bridge that gap in six months. It took more than 60 years between when the notion of Artificial Intelligence was first proposed and studied, and for us to reach today's capabilities. Solving safety of superhuman intelligence—not perfect safety, safety in the sense of “not killing literally everyone”—could very reasonably take at least half that long. And the thing about trying this with superhuman intelligence is that if you get that wrong on the first try, you do not get to learn from your mistakes, because you are dead. Humanity does not learn from the mistake and dust itself off and try again, as in other challenges we've overcome in our history, because we are all gone. Some of my friends have recently reported to me that when people outside the AI industry hear about extinction risk from Artificial General Intelligence for the first time, their reaction is “maybe we should not build AGI, then.” Hearing this gave me a tiny flash of hope, because it's a simpler, more sensible, and frankly saner reaction than I've been hearing over the last 20 years of trying to get anyone in the industry to take things seriously. Anyone talking that sanely deserves to hear how bad the situation actually is, and not be told that a six-month moratorium is going to fix it. Here's what would actually need to be done: The moratorium on new large training runs needs to be indefinite and worldwide. There can be no exceptions, including for governments or militaries. If the policy starts with the U.S., then China needs to see that the U.S. is not seeking an advantage but rather trying to prevent a horrifically dangerous technology which can have no true owner and which will kill everyone in the U.S. and in China and on Earth. If I had infinite freedom to write laws, I might carve out a single exception for AIs being trained solely to solve problems in biology and biotechnology, not trained on text from the internet, and not to the level where they start talking or planning; but if that was remotely complicating the issue I would immediately jettison that proposal and say to just shut it all down. Shut down all the large GPU clusters (the large computer farms where the most powerful AIs are refined). Shut down all the large training runs. Put a ceiling on how much computing power anyone is allowed to use in training an AI system, and move it downward over the coming years to compensate for more efficient training algorithms. No exceptions for anyone, including governments and militaries. Make immediate multinational agreements to prevent the prohibited activities from moving elsewhere. Track all GPUs sold. If intelligence says that a country outside the agreement is building a GPU cluster, be less scared of a shooting conflict between nations than of the moratorium being violated; be willing to destroy a rogue datacenter by airstrike. Frame nothing as a conflict between national interests, have it clear that anyone talking of arms races is a fool. That we all live or die as one, in this, is not a policy but a fact of nature. Make it explicit in international diplomacy that preventing AI extinction scenarios is considered a priority above preventing a full nuclear exchange, and that allied nuclear countries are willing to run some risk of nuclear exchange if that's what it takes to reduce the risk of large AI training runs. That's the kind of policy change that would cause my partner and I to hold each other, and say to each other that a miracle happened, and now there'...

April 16, 1945. Jackie Robinson is ready. He's won a tryout with the Boston Red Sox, and if he makes the team, he will become the first player to break baseball's long-standing racial divide. Robinson puts his supreme athletic skills on full display… but never hears back from the Red Sox. The tryout was just for show. It's not the first deception or indignity that Robinson has endured because of his race. But ultimately, nothing could stop him from breaking baseball's color line. What does his experience reveal about the history of race in America? And how did Robinson's life prepare him for his historic achievement?Special thanks to Howard Bryant, senior writer for ESPN and author of Full Dissidence: Notes from an Uneven Playing Field; Ralph Carhart, baseball historian and editor of the upcoming book Not an Easy Tale to Tell: Jackie Robinson on the Page, Stage, and Screen; and Amira Rose Davis, assistant professor of history and African American studies at Penn State and co-host of the sports podcast Burn it All Down and host of season three of American Prodigies: Black Girls in Gymnastics. Kurtis Parks is a father and husband, a church planter, a worship leader, an author*, and a songwriter. We are blessed that he had the time to share this incredible devotional with us all about faith. Christians can always use a little bit more faith and it's a topic that, no matter how many times it's covered in any format, it's relevant. Sometimes God rewards our faith with tangible experiences that we can't deny are a result of His intervention. This episode has just such a story and it will truly blow your mind. God is so good and so alive. Today's episode is one of those worth listening to…twice. More about our podcast can be found on Worship Leader's website. https://www.kurtisparks.com/bio Scripture References Hebrews 12:26-29 About Our Sponsor - Next Sunday https://bit.ly/3P71uFw Will future generations find a church worth fighting for? A great reckoning is underway in the church today: a naming and exposing of the exclusivity, abuse, racism, patriarchy, and unchecked power that have marked evangelical Christianity for far too long. What kind of church will emerge on the other side? Like many families, the Beaches have been wrestling with this question. Together, Nancy and Samantha represent two generations: Nancy, a boomer, was a key player in the megachurch movement that revolutionized global ministry during the '80s and '90s, while Samantha, a millennial, is willing to abandon those massive buildings and celebrity cultures and find out whether the foundation holds. Each chapter offers their individual experiences and perspectives on a challenge facing the church and considers the way forward. Filled with deep introspection and keen insight, Next Sunday is a vulnerable conversation about what the church has been—and what it can be. Kurtis has also appeared on the Fox Morning Show, BET's Bobby Jones Gospel Hour, and his song “Forever Changed”, written for his beloved Virginia Tech community after the April 2007 tragedy was featured on NBC News and CNN. His song “Burn it All Down” hit Billboard's Hot Gospel top 20, written with Joel Buckner, fellow worship leader. Kurtis wrote for and was featured on Integrity Music's “ONE a Worship Collective”, which hit #1 on Soundscan in it's first week in 2013. In Summer 2017, Kurtis was featured on the #1 album “The Emerging Sound Vol. 3”. With his latest solo release “Hymn Like” Kurtis hit Billboard Christian charts, and the songs are making their way to audiences of all ages, and churches of all styles. Many of his worship choruses are being sung around the world in churches every weekend. Read more…
Our guest this week is Sunday Times best-selling author, Cathy Rentzenbrink. Cathy is an integral part of the publishing world who regularly chairs literary events, runs creative writing courses, and speaks and writes on life, death, love, and literature. She believes that everyone's life would be improved by picking up a pen and is at her happiest when encouraging her students to have the courage to delve into themselves and see the magic that will start to happen on the page. Her first book, The Last Act of Love, was the heart-breaking account of the tragic loss of her brother and the follow up, A Manual for Heartache is a searingly honest account of how she dealt with her grief. Cathy's third book, Dear Reader, is a brilliant account of the books she's read and the impact they've had on her. It's a perfect trip down memory lane and covers so many books that will be familiar to readers everywhere. Her first novel, Everyone is Still Alive, was published last year and Cathy's latest book, Write it All Down, came out in January. Sarah first met Cathy at the Bookseller's Association conference which, in normal times, takes place once a year and is a joyful couple of days where booksellers, publishers, authors and others from the trade get together for a celebration of all things books. Cathy has hosted the conference for as long as I have been a bookseller and just makes the event. We are thrilled to be welcoming her to Mostly Books Meets. "All Down the Line" version de 1977. As the Olympics wrapped up this past weekend, Lindsay Gibbs, co-host of the sports podcast Burn it All Down, and a contributing writer to The Athletic, joins us to review the past two weeks of Olympic action, the major talking points and moments.
On this week's episode of The Waves, it's all about the Olympics. Amira Rose Davis, assistant professor of history and African American studies at Penn State University and co-host of the feminist sports podcast Burn it All Down, is joined by Slate's gymnastics reporter Rebecca Schuman. The pair start with a discussion of the racial and gender inequalities that have permeated the Games, past and present. Then they get into whether it's time for us all, like Simone Biles, to “nope” out of this complicated tradition. Davis also talks about a recent piece she did for Slate, in which she interviewed several Black women Olympians about their experiences in the Games. Recommendations: Amira: Rooting for Guan Chenchen on the beam. She also recommends the podcast Blind Landing, about a disastrous equipment error that had a massive impact on the gymnastics competition in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Rebecca: Watching Anna Cockrell in the 400-meter hurdles and Idalys Ortiz in judo. She also loves Ted Lasso. Podcast production by Cheyna Roth with editorial oversight by Susan Matthews and June Thomas. Send your comments and recommendations on what to cover to thewaves@slate.com. First, Miguel asked Shireen how she became a sports journalist and podcaster, Shireen's love for the people's game, futbol (soccer), and her favorite Burn it All Down podcast episodes. Additionally, Miguel and Shireen discuss the contradictions of sports fandom, Shireen's recent articles on TSN.ca, the controversial hiring of Chauncey Billups and Jason Kidd as NBA head coaches, while Becky Hammon once again was passed up for an NBA Head Coaching job, and more! Next, Miguel gives you his Molotov MVP for episode 23, Track and Field superstar Sprinter, Sha'Carri Richardson (@itskerrii). What a Championship Sunday!! The Costanza double dip experiment of taking both home ML favorites and both road dogs with early week purchases gives us a humble 2-2 approach. We were oh so close but shout out to the Globo Gym Packers Head Coach LaFleur for letting us ALL DOWN! We move on and here we go with the opening and current line for Super Bowl 55 between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs let’s gooooo!! Opening odds Point spread: Chiefs -3.5 (-106), Bucs +3.5 (-115) Point total: 57.5 (-110 on both sides) Moneyline: Chiefs -175, Bucs +140 Current odds (Mon Jan 25, 9:30 a.m.) Point spread: Chiefs -3 (-117), Bucs +3 (-105) Point total: 56 (-109 over, -112 under) Moneyline: Chiefs -165, Bucs +143 It's just the second time in Brady's 10 Super Bowl trips that his team is an underdog**** Over/Under at 56.5 points is tied for the second-highest in Super Bowl history, behind the 58 in Patriots vs. Falcons in SB LI FUN FACT: This will be the first-ever Super Bowl between the last two Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks. It's the seventh Super Bowl overall between QBs who had previously won one. If Brady wins No. 7, that would put him ahead of every other franchise. The Pats and Steelers both have won six. NBA Monday Pick: NUGGETS -120 ML over Mavs (pending starters out I mentioned in Podcast) @MoneylineMonaco for more content!

Mitch Jeserich hosts Letters and Politics, weekdays at 10 on KPFA. 0:34 – The CDC issued new guidance recommending against testing people who have been exposed to Covid-19 but are asymptomatic — scientists say this is deeply concerning and completely contravenes what we know about how the deadly virus spreads. I am SUPER excited for today’s episode. Quite a few of you have asked if we could spend an episode talking about blogging… So here you go! Let’s talk about creating a blog for your nonprofit! First of all, why are blogs important? If you have a blog, it can help you show up in Google searches and that helps more people find your nonprofit which gives you a better opportunity to serve and help people. A blog is another way to connect with them, build their trust in you, and solidify the idea that you are here to help them. So, what should you write about on your nonprofit’s blog? Start off by thinking about the person you serve (or want to serve). What did they eat for breakfast this morning (if they ate)? What do they do in their spare time? What do they spend their money on? Why do they use your service? For example: Let’s say your nonprofit is a food bank – why do people come there? What do they use that money for that they save by coming to you? Is it so they can save up for shoes for their kids? So they can pay for doctor’s appointments, school supplies, medicine? Buy their child an ice cream cone or something special? They need a little extra money for their mother – medicine, or something extra for her? You’ve probably had many conversations with people you serve, and you see the hardship they go through. What do you talk to them about when you see them? Are their kids doing OK in school? How is their mother? You know how complex and complicated their lives are. When you begin to write the blog post, think of those things and that person. Write your blog post about topics that will help them. We all have things we know are good for us and want to share about them. But is that what the person you serve wants to read about? You know eating healthy is best and kale and super foods are really good, but is that a topic for the people you serve? Probably not. Instead what would help them? What would they want to know about? Think about the questions that person Googles – what do they search for on the internet when they have a question or a need? Then take one question and answer it in your blog post. Let’s use another example – let’s say your nonprofit is a pregnancy resource center. The person you serve is probably searching questions like: How do you get pregnant? How do you read a pregnancy test? How do you know you’re pregnant? Answer each of those questions in their own separate blog post. Break it down to an easy to understand, bite sized article. That’s your blog post. Think of the person you serve, think of what their day to day life is like, what are their struggles and problems, think about a question they would Google, and then answer one of those questions in a blog post. A good way to get ideas for blog posts is to brainstorm. Write down the most common problems you encounter at your nonprofit. What are the recurring problems you hear from the people you serve… Write them ALL DOWN. Don’t think about it too much – this is just a brainstorm activity. Doing this with someone else will help you get the creative juices flowing! Another way to get ideas for blogging is to ask the people who work at your nonprofit for stories. You’ll gain insight and ideas into what needs you can address in a blog post. You’re not telling that story in the blog post; it’s just meant to give you a topic idea. Write down ALL of these ideas and then go back over your list when you’re finished and pick out the very best ideas. Now, let’s talk about what happens when it’s actually time for you to sit down and WRITE! Things to keep in mind: Use one topic per blog post –The temptation here is to give a complete picture of the problem you’re trying to help with. Avoid that temptation by just answering one question…what does a positive pregnancy test look like, things to do with your children for fun, where to go for free pharmacy meds, three things to do to help your elderly mom. See? Take just one topic at a time. Write 150-180 words. In previous episodes when we’ve talked about blogging, I said 300-500 words, but my new recommendation is SHORT. 150-180 words. I am one of those people whose brain is wired, “If some is good, more is better.” In other words, I have a hard time quitting, but there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. I struggle with this ACROSS THE BOARD in life! If some is good, more is better when it comes to food, sleep, exercise, laziness, face cream, listening to the music too loud in my headphones… I really have to fight that mentality of “if some is good more is better” – that isn’t always, if ever, true! So, if you’re like me, and you know you have a tendency to give too much, to fix all the problems, I want you to really focus on setting that limit for your blog post! 150-180 words. Use a happy picture with it – Unsplash.com is a catalog of free photos you can use for your blog post. Use a happy or appropriate picture that matches the theme of your post. The picture is to help them think of where they want to be – not a sad picture of where you think they are. Add your phone number and email address at the end of your blog post so people can contact you. They might finish reading your blog post and think, “Hey! I need more information.” Or “Hey! These people know what they’re talking about – I need to get in touch with them!” Don’t miss the opportunity to connect with them. Put your phone number and email address at the end of every blog post. Make things easy to look at when possible. Use lists/bullet points – keep them short. Don’t blog about the top 10 things, write about the top 3 things. Make it easy to read Bold the text a little bit for important words. Think about who you’re writing to. What are they interested in? Make it easy for them to read. Write on a 4th grade level. Don’t use big words, it has to be short, quick, easy to read. Exception: If you’re blogging for a nonprofit university or an organization like that, you’re going to write longer and on a higher level than 4th grade because your audience typically reads at a higher level. A blog is not an educational piece, but a way to connect to people you serve or supporters. Remember that we have thousands of pieces of information coming at us every day. Our brains are made to find the things that will help us survive and thrive. So, people scan for things that are easy to understand and helpful to use. If we get too complicated in the words we use or the tips we’re giving, people lose interest quickly. Keep it simple and easy to read with good bite-sized information. A blog is a way to connect with your people to help them. When you keep them in mind, you’ll have helped them and strengthened their connection with your nonprofit organization. Can we just step back and recognize for a minute how amazing you are? Here you are, finding out how to write a better blog post for your nonprofit because you want to help more people. You want to serve more people who need your help. You are AWESOME. You truly have a heart for helping others, and I admire you and your courage to serve those in need in your community. Welcome to Episode 36 of Nooks and Crannies! Stranger Danger Real-Estate Markets or Funky-Town Money Laundering :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Welcome back to Canada Evan who just spent 10 days in Cuba! His gastrointestinal track is proof positive that he had a “blast” evidently he still is…Gross. (3:00) We got yet another Spotify Playlist, for Evan’s ridicule. Violet’s Funky Town; old-school funk and disco era tunes that make Vi wiggle. Matt also discovers Evan’s Achilles Heel to counter-act his critiques: Heavy Unwarranted Praise! (9:03) Might have been the single malt; we cut a quick little Meta Pod Babble Segment about Wholistic Pod-Intentionality, or some shit… (12:26) This is a big ol Political Segment about the ongoing issue(s) of Money Laundering in BC’s Casino’s and Canada’s Real-Estate market. This is a story that E and M both know quite a bit about, so we give solid background and provide our own real life experiences witnessing the skyrocketing costs of housing alongside the Stagnation of Real Income levels. I don’t know what got up my ass on this one folks, but, Mamoo grows an impressive beard, his hair gets a little zany and boy oh boy his Marxist vanguard waves ferociously! (27:51): We are resurrecting the Podcast Recommendation Section plagiarized from Matty’s Corner on the Podstuff Podcast. We start with the good Canadian Kids; Skip and Josh who have a solid a-political(ish) pod about professional and NCAA sports, if you are looking for coverage and solid analysis on all things players, scores, owners, transactions and interesting tidbits on the Media. Friends of our show too! The Edge of Sports podcast is intensely political and hosted by the Wokest sports podcaster: Dave Zarin. If you are looking for progressive athletic coverage that goes way beyond the headlines, digging into the Nooks and Crannies of sports politics, check out the Edge of Sports podcast! Burn it All Down is like EoS but from a feminist and female-centric perspective. Hosted by four outstandingly brilliant co-hosts one of which is in Canada, eh! All the episodes and topics focus on female athletes and their sports (pro and amateur) and due to the extreme bias in the mainstream press you will surely hear dozens of new things on each listen. It’s a segmented show, love the Burn Pile btw, and the guests they have are very thought-provoking. One of the best new pod discoveries of my last 6 months! Keep up the fine work!! Last but not least; Evan brings in Why Theory about psycho-analytic theory and its applications *theory is the perspectives used and applied to data to help analysis, perspective basically. Anywho, Evan comes out of the Freudian Closet on this one, weird little psycho-analyzer, whereas Matty is of course a Jungian. Couple of Pedantic dillwads eh? (34:31) We cap things off with another 90s Memories from Old Man Matty’s Dimming Mind, this edition we have the really dark and depressing: STRANGER DANGER! Hear about Matt’s bearspray and personal auditory alert device, how my inability to go “downtown” until I was 21 shaped my entire personality, note how Evan notes this, hear about BC’s propensity to produce serial killers, some really sad conversations, how Evan met his first Anthropologist in Winnipeg, how 8y.o. Mamoo sidestepped the Jerk Off Specialist on his way to Mac’s; and we cap things with a broad discussion (future episode for sure) about True Crime as a pod genre and our puzzlement over its continuous popularity. **I will mention this in the episode too, sorry for the giggles, that was nervous laughter on Matt’s part, true-crime and the cases makes me sad and nervous, really uncomfortable, its why I was trying desperately to somewhat make light of experiences we had…and why this will be our last TC segment ever! Others that do these kinds of shows do so properly** Talks to You All soon, aren’t I lucky?? Next Episode: A deep dive on Zombie’s with our very own Cinematic Expert Paaaauuuh__ll Combs! Chris, from Playcomics Podcast, managed to weasel his way on the episode, probably payback for me attempting to relentlessly kick him off his show and replace him with myself. Serious, not serious :-) Chris is the best and this one was a blast! ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Violet’s Funky Town https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7qhVf8fSSvopvAtVwmBKFg?si=4rVO9Mb0T9ms4ilAbQWf8w W5 Documentary on Money Laundering in BC Casino’s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddsGyJ-7Zw0) Skip and Josh pod (https://skipandjosh.com/) Edge of Sports (https://www.edgeofsportspodcast.com/) Burn it all Down (https://www.burnitalldownpod.com/episodes) Why Theory (https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/why-theory/id1299863834) Playcomics Podcast (https://playcomics.com/) ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: N&C Links All The Episodes Our Social Links in One Place Drop us a line: Nooksandcranniespod@gmail.com Tweet a little Tweet at Us: https://twitter.com/NooksCrannie Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nooksandcranniespodcast Ponder Evan’s Blurry Pictures: https://www.instagram.com/nooks_and_crannies_pod/ Find Nooks and Crannies on Spotify Follow, Rate and Review on Podchaser (please!) Part 3 – SERIES: Vertical Way too often our primary day-to-day focus is horizontal, on the here and now. But we’re called to lift our heads, to keep our eyes on Jesus, to seek God’s glory, to get Vertical. The Word of God and the Gospel is contains must be our focus in preaching, in worship, and it is vital to saturate our lives with. We like to say "God Wrote it All Down", and we're to believe the Bible in all that it teaches, obey it in all that it requires, and trust it in all that it promises. Our focus must be on the Gospel because it brings God's power, so it’s the only thing we preach.
Lisa Ingarfield is joined by author, journalist and host of the Burn it All Down podcast Jessica Luther to discuss Women’s Representation in the Media and the repetitive erosion of women's contributions. They unpack some examples of how female athletes are shunted into the shadows and regarded as a secondary story, regardless of their performance. Why media perpetuate this style of journalism to cover stories that they shape to their audience and diminish women’s achievements in the process. In today's Books with Hooks, Carly and CeCe critique two query letters. During which, they discuss how specificity can make your novel seem more realistic; the challenges with switching between different types of narration; a prologue that CeCe likes; the depth that interiority adds to dialogue; and the difficulty with relying on a character's memory to create a plot. After which, Bianca interviews Nicolas DiDomizio, author of Burn it All Down and The Gay Best Friend. The two discuss the story behind James Patterson blurbing Nicolas' debut novel and how that helped a book with zero comps get published; the marketing strategy for The Gay Best Friend; what Nick learned from adapting his latest novel to a screenplay; how he took a crash course in screenplay writing; deciding what scenes from the novel had to be kept or removed from the screenplay; and the differences in writing a screenplay versus a novel.Find us on our socials:Twitter: @TSNOTYAW @BiancaM_author @carlywatters @ceciliaclyraInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_shit_about_writing/ https://www.instagram.com/biancamarais_author/https://www.instagram.com/carlywatters/ https://www.instagram.com/cece_lyra_agent/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TSNOTYAWWebsites: www.theshitaboutwriting.com, www.biancamarais.com, www.carlywatters.com and www.cecilialyra.comBookshop.org affiliate page: https://bookshop.org/shop/theshitnoonetellsyouaboutwritingTo ask a question, go to: https://sayhi.chat/TSNOTYAWMore information about Nicolas can be found at: https://nicolasdidomizio.com/He is also on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/nicdidomiziobooks/?hl=enOur Sponsors:* Check out Factor 75 and use my code tsnotyaw50 for a great deal: https://www.factor75.com/* Check out Rosetta Stone and use my code TODAY for a great deal: https://www.rosettastone.com/Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
