In this episode of the Life and Football Podcast our special guest is Freddie Stevenson. Freddie Stevenson is a former Full Back/ Running Back for the NFL and Florida State University. This was a great interview that will give anyone great insight into becoming successful. Freddie played his Highschool Football in Polk County Florida, College Football at Florida State, and signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent in 2017, and also played for the Orlando Apollos. Former Bears fullback Freddie Stevenson is doing his best to help those who were once in his shoes. In his first book, Trials to Triumph, he elaborates on his journey to the NFL and the obstacles he had to face to get there, as well as the struggles that he faced once his playing days came to an end. Growing up in Florida, Stevenson's family was far from affluent. With a single mother who had to work multiple jobs to feed five children while his father was in prison, he experienced firsthand what effect poverty can have on a person. In June 2019, Stevenson announced he had ended his football career, citing the NFL's decrease in using fullbacks, and created the Triumph 105 company. The Life and Football Podcast is available on the following platforms Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Anchor, Spotify, Breaker, Overcast Pocketcasts, Radio Public, Stitcher, Player FM, & YouTube!
It's been more than two years since we last checked in on the spectacular flame-out of the Alliance of American Football back in April 2019 - enough time, perhaps, to begin the process of dissecting how something so fresh and innovatively promising went so speedily to hell in a hand-basket. Documentary filmmaker Steven Potter ("Alliances Broken") joins this week's 'cast to discuss his brand new movie - the first extended look at the dramatic and ultimately catastrophic story arc of a league that seemingly had everything going for it (charismatic founder, solid venture investors, big-name coaches, pedigreed football administrators, national television contracts, even a supposedly ground-breaking mobile betting app) - until all of a sudden, it didn't. Originally hired by the AAF's Orlando Apollos to help with video content creation and local market social media promotion, Potter unwittingly became an inside chronicler of a league that rapidly (and bizarrely) went from a legitimate beacon of hope for players looking to extend their chances at pro football careers to a gargantuan debacle that hundreds of former employees and a litany of creditors are still trying to process the ramifications of. The evolving "history" of the Alliance is still relatively new, and Potter helps us get the first few chapters solidified while the memories of those who were there are still fresh.
Former captain and defensive lineman Mike Ramsay took some time from his Saturday morning to talk to us about his current life, his college and pro football career and the start of his fiancé's legal career. One fun fact - he played for the Orlando Apollos and Coach Spurrier! Mike played at Duke from 2013-2017 and experienced a lot of great moments in Blue Devils football history. We covered those along with the injury-riddled 2016 season and the up-and-down 2017 season. And before you ask, yes, we talked about Miami. You've been warned. Beyond the football talk, we had an interesting discussion about financial literacy, the social issues that are tied into our education system and we get into one of the most informative history podcasts ever, the Revolutions Podcast series on The Haitian Revolution. If you're not interested in this discussion, just skip over 8:53-17:12. I enjoyed our talk, but understand that some of you may be here for just the football. If you don't want to listen, that's fine - skip past it. Don't blow me up with negative emails, Twitter mentions and the like. Going back to Haiti's revolution, the first episode can be found here. I can't recommend this series, and the entire Revolutions Podcast, enough. Mike Duncan is a great podcaster - start listening to him if you haven't already. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bullcitycoordinators/support
Meet a new Fairview neighbor, Mike Waddell, President & Governor of the Allen Americans Professional Hockey Club. A 30-plus year veteran of the sports world, Waddell took the helm of business operations with the Allen Americans team in 2020 after most recently serving as president of World Team Tennis' Orlando Storm. Just prior to that, he served as team president for the Orlando Apollos in the Alliance of American Football for the 2019 season and also has built his extensive experience in college sports and NASCAR. Waddell said when he received the call from Allen Americans Owner Jack Gulati to consider a move to North Texas, there was no doubt he wanted to seize the opportunity. “I said ‘I've gotta do this!' This is a great place, and living over in Fairview, it's a great place to live,” Waddell said. “I've lived in a lot of suburbs, bedroom communities … you just want to be close to everything, but you also want to be able to feel like you've gotten away. This is the best area I have been for that, and my wife talks about it all the time. We actually know our neighbors here.” Waddell and his wife, Heidi, have two adult daughters, and are experiencing first hand the community pride and quality of life that can be a game changer in helping the Allen Americans recruit, he said. “Part of being able to recruit, whether you're in college sports or minor league professional hockey like we are with the Allen Americans, is you've got to have a great place to recruit to. We play in a nice arena but we live in a great area. These guys, they could be in Wheeling, West Virginia, or Kalamazoo, Michigan, or Orlando, Florida, or Rapid City, South Dakota. I mean, there are 26 teams in the ECHL that are in 20 states and two foreign provinces in Canada. … When you can come back to a super area like this, you can recruit solid talent. People want to come here and work,” Waddell said, citing our “four seasons” lifestyle and options for dining, cultural experiences, family fun activities and access to nature. In this episode, Waddell shares more of his love for Fairview and the greater area, including future goals for the organization to more deeply engage in the community through its foundation and how the organization is eager to custom tailor experiences for fans. “People are looking for things to do right now. Maybe it's for their family. Maybe it's just for them and their significant other. Maybe they want to come out with a big group from work. We can create that type of experience for you and make you have a really awesome experience whenever you come to the Allen Americans and the Allen Event Center,” Waddell said. “When you're a member of our community, we're a year-round lifestyle brand. I don't want to be [just] a hockey team.” Give a listen to hear more from Mike Waddell, and learn more about the Allen Americans Professional Hockey Club at allenamericans.com.
Elliott Fry most recently played for the Atlanta Falcons and signed a future’s contract with the NFC South club in 2020. He kicked at the University of South Carolina where he is the all-time leader in points scored. His dream is to be one of the 32 starting kickers in the NFL, a dream he has tasted, but not yet fulfilled. Here’s why. Fry’s story manifests the words of NFL Super Agent Leigh Steinberg, who joined the Simple Kicking Show in 2020. Steinberg, who represents Patrick Mahomes (Quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs), said that kickers face difficulties because they are no backups, in his words there is a void of the experience of a “tutelage like a back-up quarterback experiences”. This means NFL free agent kickers lack a kind of mentorship to learn the ropes while still being employed. Fry’s entry into the NFL world of starting specialists has been rocky. He has made stops with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears, and Baltimore Ravens. He even made a spot with the Alliance of American Football with the Orlando Apollos, playing for his college head coach, Steve Spurrier. His tenure with the Chicago Bears presented the best timing of his career. The Bears were the hottest name in the NFL for kicking mainly because of one season ending kick. The Bears cut Cody Parkey (who is the current kicker for the Cleveland Browns) for missing a 43 yard field goal attempt from the right hash vs. the Philadelphia Eagles. It will be known in perpetuity as the “double doink.” Fry finished in the top two after competing with nearly a dozen Free Agents. Coming down to a few kicks at Bears training camp in Bourbannais, Illinois the Bears decided to waive Fry and select Eddy Piñiero. His pursuit of the NFL did not slow down. The Carolina Panthers brought him in for offseason workouts, then was subsequently cut. He then made a second stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during 2020 NFL training camp. After 4 or 5 weeks off, a 2020 NFL roster spot for the Atlanta Falcons opened up. Fry was called in and competed to fill in for Younghoe Koo, who suffered a groin injury. Less than 4 days later Fry split the yellow pipes on Monday Night Football vs. the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. After, Koo was reactivated and Fry was designated to the practice squad, finishing the season earning a future’s contract. Despite the unpaved road, Fry continues to work on his craft, aiming to be a starting kicker in the NFL. This episode of the Simple Kicking show expands Fry’s drive, and how he continues to take small incremental steps to achieve his goal. He talks about lessons learned from Justin Tucker, Sam Koch, and Morgan Cox. The trio is known as the Wolfpack on the Baltimore Ravens coached by Mayor Randy Brown. He shares the journey of working with Chicago Bears Special Teams Pat O’Donnell, Pat Scales, and Special Teams Coordinator Chris Tabor. As he continues trudging the road, it is clear that his knowledge, wisdom and experience has helped him earn the belonging in the NFL that is required to convert kicks, not just talk about it.
On the latest episode of the show, host Luke Winstel is joined by NFL defensive lineman and 2012 Green Bay Packers Second Round Pick Jerel Worthy. Worthy was an All-American at Michigan State University and played in the NFL for the Packers, New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs, Detriot Lions, Buffalo Bills, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After seven years in the NFL, Worthy played for the Orlando Apollos in the Alliance of American Football (AAF) in the spring of 2019. On the show, Worthy discusses his journey to the NFL, his time playing college football, his transition to the NFL, and his time playing in the league. Additionally, Worthy talked about his time in the AAF and potentially participating in the latest rendition of the XFL. Please follow the podcast @LukeWinstelShow on Twitter and Instagram. The AAF did not last a whole season but the Orlando Apollos will always be the champions in our hearts.
We veer back this week into the still-unfolding mess that is (or was) the Alliance of American Football with ESPN.com “NFL Nation” reporter Michael Rothstein – who, along with ESPN Senior Writer Seth Wickersham – has been chronicling the demise of the once-promising league (Inside the Short, Unhappy Life of the Alliance of American Football), dating back to its curious pre-season earlier this winter. With Carolina Hurricanes owner and last-minute financial savior Tom Dundon recently suing the now-bankrupt league for the return of his complete $70 million investment, the story of the Alliance is getting uglier by the week – with little end to the drama in sight. Despite helping nearly 60 of its players (and counting) sign NFL contracts, the AAF is increasingly likely to be remembered for its shaky finances and off-field managerial intrigue than for its surprisingly high quality of on-field play. Rothstein recounts some of the more interesting stories and tidbits gleaned from his months of covering the formative weeks, initial games and now, chaotic dissolution, of a league that seemingly had everything going for it – until it suddenly (and with hindsight) didn’t – including: Covering the AAF pre-season – despite being denied access to actual practices; The mysterious coaching “debut” of Michael Vick; The deceptive triumph of the Orlando Apollos’ home (and league co-) opener – replete with pre-game tailgating; Initial suspicions the league wasn’t off to as solid a start as early appearances suggested; AND An initial assessment of the villains and victims of the Alliance’s ongoing quietus.
