I am joined by Loper co-founder, Sam Bernstein. Sam is the co-founder of Loper, a free mobile app designed to help students explore and discover their best educational opportunities after high school. The inspiration for Loper came out of the pandemic, where “life on pause” led to two college friends (Sam and his co-founder Eric) spending long nights discussing their shared passion: education. Fast forward two years and they quit their jobs to launch Loper, which has now helped nearly 200,000 students find best-fit opportunities after high school.Since founding Loper Sam has spoken at nearly a dozen industry conferences, and he always loves the opportunity to present to both students and parents on college and career readiness. Sam lives in Chicago, loves to bike, and (so far) has kept up with his 2025 resolution to read more fiction. His favorite podcast is “Revolutions” by Mike Duncan. The best place to connect with Sam is on LinkedIn. If you have questions about Loper or are interested in either a virtual or live presentation to your students, you can reach him at sam@getloper.com.

Can one teacher change the course of a student's life? Can curiosity survive in a system that prioritizes conformity? October Sky is more than just a heartwarming story about a boy and his rockets—it's a powerful look at the impact of education, ambition, and the struggle between dreams and expectations. But how accurately does it reflect today's schools? Are students still discouraged from pursuing unconventional paths? Do educators still have the power to ignite change? In this review, we'll break down what October Sky gets right (and where it misses the mark) when it comes to the modern classroom.   Takeaways: Curiosity and inquiry are still not be nurtured in schools Project based learning allows students to be self directed and follow their passions Dreaming doesn't get you where you want to be- action is required Just don't quit! - Advice from Michael Having a network helps when you get stuck   About Michael Duncan: An award-winning superintendent and longtime champion of education transformation, Dr. Mike Duncan is the President and CEO of Battelle for Kids. Mike was one of the longest-serving superintendents in the state of Georgia, leading Pike County Schools for 18 years from 2005 until his retirement in 2023. Listen to the rest of this premium episode by subscribing at patreon.com/knowyourenemyA stock rhetorical trope on the right is to invoke ancient Rome when talking about American decline—often making direct comparisons between the Goth invaders and contemporary immigrants, obsessing over homosexuality and Rome's fall, and more. If their understanding of history isn't very serious, what should we make of these appeals? And are there any "lessons" we should learn from Roman history? There's no better time to take up such matters than while Matt is in Rome, and there was no one better for him to talk with about them than Mike Duncan, the prolific and brilliant history podcaster; he currently hosts the Revolutions podcast and, especially relevant for the purposes of this conversation, hosted the History of Rome podcast from 2007-2012, a project that led him to write The Story Before the Storm: The Beginning of the End of the Roman Republic (2017). Matt and Mike discuss the use and abuse of history, how "norms" do and do not matter, the relationship between imperialist foreign policy and domestic politics, the perils of vast income inequality, then and now, and more.Sources:For quotes from conservatives about Roman decline: Reagan, Nixon, Buchanan, Vance (and Pete Navarro & Michael Anton)Mike Duncan, The Storm Before the Storm(2017)— Hero of Two Worlds: The Marquis de Lafayette in the Age of Revolution (2021)

In this rich conversation, Dr. Garza introduces new BFK President and CEO Mike Duncan, Ed.D. From discussing his background to what his hopes, dreams, and aspirations are for the future of the organization, the two dynamic leaders look to the future of continuing to meet the moment in education and to transform systems nationwide.  Episode Highlights: 1:08: Learn more about Mike's background and experiences 5:15: What sparked Mike's work in his school district with the Portrait of a Graduate? 14:00: The influence of Battelle for Kids and the EdLeader21 Network on Mike's work. 19:07: What excites Mike about the opportunity to lead BFK into the future? 23:02: The Movement  29:12: Hopes, dreams, and aspirations  34:00: Mike recognizes Karen   Mike Duncan has a proven track record of leadership in the education sector. He was one of the longest serving superintendents in the state of Georgia, having led Pike County Schools for 18 years. Before arriving in Pike, he was a high school principal, high school and middle school assistant principal, and a middle school teacher. He earned a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Georgia in 2004. He has been a member of EdLeader21, the national network of Battelle for Kids, for more than a decade and previously served as the network's advisory vice chair. He joined Battelle for Kids in August of this year and as of October 1st serves as the organization's President and CEO.   Karen Garza joined Battelle for Kids in 2017 as President and CEO, only the second leader since the organization formed in 2001. She led the transformation of Battelle for Kids, including the emphasis on realizing the power and promise of 21st century learning for every student, the increasing adoption of Portraits of a Graduate by school systems across the country, and the additions of the EdLeader21 Network and the Partnership for 21st Century Learning (P21) into the Battelle for Kids family.  She began her career as a kindergarten teacher before embarking on an administrative and advocacy path that included government relations director, curriculum director, deputy superintendent, chief academic officer, and superintendent at Lubbock Independent School District in Texas and Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia.  On behalf of all of us at Battelle for Kids, we thank her for her years of service not only to our organization but to thousands of students and educators across the nation. We wish her the best in her retirement and are looking forward to her continued involvement with BFK on various projects.   The EdSpark Podcast with Dr. Karen Garza is a production of Battelle for Kids. Frank Sinatra once observed that “you've either got or you haven't got style,” but when you're living out of an RV in the wilds of Iowa—or, for that matter, representing your state in the halls of the US Senate—that doesn't really matter. Jonah's still on the road today, but he can't outrun his existential dread. To drown it out for a while instead, he delivers yet another unfocused, inordinately long Ruminant to end the week. This time, much of his irritation is directed toward the renewed jackassery of Matt Gaetz and the politics of a potential Biden impeachment, but plenty of righteous indignation is also reserved for the Senate's new dress code and the increasingly shaky prospect of a second Biden term. Plus, tune in to hear Jonah elaborate on why men spend so much time thinking about Rome (almost as much, in fact, as they spend thinking about Nixon). Sam and Emma host Jane McAlevey, Senior Policy Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley's Labor Center, to discuss her recent video for The Nation "You Voted To Form A Union. Now What?" Then they are joined by T.J. Kitchen, Organizing Director for the Teamsters Joint Council #43, to discuss the recent organizing efforts at a Chipotle franchise in Lansing, Michigan. Sam and Emma begin by running through updates on early Russia-Ukraine negotiations (including Putin rejecting a No-NATO pledge), WV's new abortion ban, and Starbucks' firing of organizer Jaz Brisack, also touching on Lindsey Graham launching his bill to finally lead America out of the wacko dark ages of “Bodily Autonomy.” Then Jane McAlevey joins as she, Sam, and Emma get right into contextualizing the growth of the American labor movement over the last two years (since McAlevey's last appearance on MR), exploring the mass growth in organized labor action in the wake of the heightened tensions of 2020 and the labor exploitation of the COVID-19 pandemic, and how the Biden administration's NLRB has failed (and occasionally succeeded) in capturing that rage. Following up on that discussion, Jane gets into the next iteration of challenges facing new US unions, looking at how the rise of independent unions (Starbucks Workers United, Amazon Labor Union, etc), fails to capitalize on the preexisting organizing expertise and experience found in national unions (and preferably in the NLRB) or to mobilize for demands on a larger-scale. After they get into the continuing complicity of the Democratic Party in undermining labor power in the US, also covering their response to the recent Freight Rail strike, they wrap up by assessing how the US working class became so overworked and under-compensated while rent and healthcare prices continue to skyrocket, and what we can do to close that gap. TJ Kitchen then joins to dive into the recent organizing at a Lansing Chipotle, discussing how the workers there reached out to the Teamsters Joint Council #43, how they were able to prepare the workers and strategize for the union-busting that would surely come (and did), and how this action can grow moving forwards. And in the Fun Half: Emma and Sam take a call from Penny on Organizing with UFCW-300, Owen from LA discusses European power policy as the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues, Mitch McConnell sends some warning shots Lindsey Graham's way, and Routers reveals Putin was offered a No-NATO pledge from Ukraine. Jenna from Freemont discusses fighting for the Trans community, Hannah from Kansas City discusses the “Tucker Carlson Left” and why fighting for healthcare is NOT antithetical to fighting for trans healthcare, and the crew remembers Ken Starr. Emma is back! Sam and her break down the biggest headlines of the day. Then they are joined by Mike Duncan, host of the Revolutions podcast, and author of the recent book Hero of Two Worlds: The Marquis de Lafayette in the Age of Revolution. Sam and Emma run through updates on the Nurses' strike in Minnesota, the DOJ going Oprah-mode with their subpoenas (you get one!), and what state primaries we will see today, before diving deeper into the GOP's history of pushing the DOJ towards corrupting their reporting of voter fraud, exploring how Trump and Barr took a page out of George W. Bush's book in their treatment of a US Attorney in the Southern District of New York. Next, they jump into the recent freight rail strike across multiple unions in the US, exploring the horrendous working conditions (including NO sick leave) that spurred this action, and debating where Biden's NLRB will fall on this fight (and the massive impact that could have). They also discuss Lindsey Graham's federal abortion ban proposal, the absurdly stupid timing of it, and how it gives away the game in the GOP's long-term plans to get rid of reproductive care, taking on the impact it might have in the leadup to the midterms, what the goals of the two parties are in these elections, and why the discourse around abortion has so benefitted the Democrats. They wrap up the news day by touching on the recent case accepted by the Supreme Court, Talevski v Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County, and the impact it might have on Medicaid and the administrative state. Mike Duncan then joins, as he situates how his study of the Democratic revolutions of the 18th and 19th Centuries brought to the fore the role of THEE Marquis de Lafayette in these wars, traveling from revolution to revolution to deploy his expertise against the British and French ruling class. Duncan explores the patterns the revolutions of this era saw, the importance of a divided working class, and how Lafayette fits into these systems, before a smaller conversation on what the revolutions of these eras actually entailed. Wrapping up, they have a broader discussion of revolutions, including those Duncan has written about in the past, and the systems and structures that lead to them, situating where the current US And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Glenn Greenwald continue to pitch Democrats caring about the rise of fascism as “Leftist Hypocrisy” and an attempt to “punish dissent,” with Tucker and Hannity clinging to the danger of “investigating” things, and have a greater conversation about the corrupt role of American intelligence and the necessary role of the IRS. Multi-Ivy alum Ron DeSantis comes out against four-year private education (presumably in preference of the 8-year Yale-Harvard track that he took) and a Minnesota republican asks for more nuance in his ability to vote “Yes” or “No, struggles to add it (largely due to “Maybe” votes not existing), and Don Bolduc, NH Senate GOP Favorite, takes “abolishing the Senate” to a whole new level of “abolishing the right to vote for your Senator,” plus, your calls and IMs! The Remnant gets wonky today as Klon Kitchen, AEI senior fellow and author of The Current newsletter for The Dispatch, returns to discuss Russia's information war in Ukraine. With no end in sight for the conflict, Jonah and Klon explore what America's intelligence support for Ukraine looks like and what other measures we could take to assist the country. They also touch on the veracity of Russia and China's COVID statistics, what Putin's war will mean for Taiwan, and how Klon would advise Joe Biden if he were summoned to the White House. Stick around until the end for obligatory dog discourse. Show Notes:- Klon's page at The Dispatch- Klon: “Why Russia's Cyber Warriors Haven't Crippled Ukraine”- Daniel Hannan: “Vladimir Putin's kleptocracy will be his own undoing”- Mike Duncan on the Russian Revolution- The Remnant with Mike Duncan- Klon on semiconductors and the “splinternet”- The Remnant with Lyman Stone- Jonah: “Vladimir Putin, Brittle Oak”- The Remnant with Edward Carr- Klon: “School's in Session”

What have been the Biden administration's biggest foreign policy mistakes? And is America's role in the world in doubt? Tune in to hear these questions answered, and to find out what most people get wrong about Francis Fukuyama. Show Notes:- Kori's page at AEI- Kori: “Putin Accidentally Revitalized the West's Liberal Order”- Kori's latest book, America vs the West- Biden's oil import ban- Mike Duncan on the Russian Revolution- Gradually, then suddenly- Biden's new Iran Deal
