This week's guest on the Original Sports Podcast with Mark Maradei is Malik Boynton. Boynton has played football all his life. After a challenging time growing up in Detroit Michigan, Malik parlayed his solid grades and athletic talents as an all state high school football player into a productive football career playing for Austin Peay University. Boynton got a shot with the Pittsburgh Steelers following his college playing days and it was not meant to be but that didn't stop him from continuing his journey. His playing career then took him to the Alliance of American Football League where he played for the Memphis Express. He then went north to play for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian football league before his most recent stop with Tuscon Sugar Skulls. We will talk with Malik about his challenges growing up in Detroit, how he used football as a tool to help him cope with tragedy and how he was able to create opportunity out of adversity through his time at Austin Peay University. For our “We Just Gotta Know” segment we will have Malik share with us who he feels are the top five defensive backs currently in the National Football League and he thinks so. From an early age, Oshiomogho Atogwe focused on the micro-steps needed to continually grow and learn and constantly refine and improve his skills as a football player. And as Atomic Habit's author James Clear says, it's the ‘aggregation of marginal gains over time' that leads to long term lasting success. Little did Oshiomogho know it at the time, but he would go on to be one of the best high school players to ever come out of Windsor, Ontario and also go on to receive a scholarship at Stanford University and be a defensive standout on the team. This would lead him to be drafted in the 3rd round of the NFL draft by the St Louis Rams and play 8 years in the NFL. 5 years with the Rams, 2 years with the Redskins and then finish his career with the Philadelphia Eagles. In our discussion, Oshiomogho and I talk about his journey in the NFL and what it was he came to better understand about himself through this experience. He has always been guided by his faith and the deep spiritual framework that he puts into action in his life to honor the talents and strengths that he feels he has been given and the responsibility to give back to the world in special ways to serve others with the gifts that he has been blessed with. Oshiomogho believes that a great coach has the power to change a persons life and that it is a role that cannot be taken lightly. Using his own experiences as an example, he speaks about the impact that his high school coach Harry Lumley had in his life and the difference he made. As a college football player myself and being from the same hometown, Windsor Ontario, it was great to connect with Oshiomogho and have this discussion on my podcast. Wherever you are in the world listening to this, I hope you enjoy the conversation and share it with at least one person you feel with benefit from listening to it as well. About Oshiomogho Oshiomogho Isaac "O.J." Atogwe (born June 23, 1981) is a Canadian former professional American football free safety who served most recently as the secondary coach for the Memphis Express of the Alliance of American Football (AAF). He was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He played college football at Stanford. Atogwe was also a member of the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles.
Jayzen is excited to welcome Kosha Irby to the show. Kosha has had an incredible career in sports marketing and the business of sports after starting as a student athlete. He is currently the CMO of Professional Bull Riders (PBR), and first to admit he’s not what people think of as a cowboy. He continues to be successful in leveraging his unique perspective to help expand the PBR brand. People who experience a Lead With Your Brand workshop or keynote often want to explore more on how to put the system into action to benefit their career. A key aspect of this is understanding what your personal brand filters are and how best to use them. How can you complete any project in your “signature” way so that your colleagues and boss see your thumbprints all over it and know the value that you bring. Kosha was hooked on the business of sports after a really unique entrepreneurial effort while a college athlete. His career stories are as insightful as they are entertaining, as he has worked around the world and brought his unique brand and perspective to every position he has had. Notably, he oversaw live event marketing and sales for WWE in several global markets. This week on Inside the Headset we speak with Rob Everett, who most recently coached tight ends and was a defensive assistant for the Memphis Express in the AAF. We discuss how he has incorporated technology to more efficiently coach and teach players at the high school, college, and professional levels. The best part? All the technology he uses is free. Rob Everett's coaching career began as an offensive line coach at Washington-Lee HS (VA) in 2002. From there, he worked with the offensive lineman at Robert E. Lee HS (VA) for two seasons (2004-2005) before being promoted to head coach of the program (2006-2010). Coach Everett then went on to serve as the defensive coordinator at Westfield HS (VA) from 2011-2015 before jumping to the collegiate level at Bridgewater College, where he was the defensive coordinator (2016-2018). Everett coached in the Alliance of American Football with the Memphis Express under Head Coach Mike Singletary in 2019.
