With players from all XFL teams travelling to Arlington Texas to attend a combined training camp the excitement for the league is continuing to build. With the schedule now released, and the announcement that the Vegas Vipers will play in Cashman Field, the thought of the XFL kicking off on 18 February is drawing even closer to reality. In this podcast we hear about the football journey of Cecil Cherry, a linebacker who excelled in college, but had his NFL Pro day cancelled because of COVID. He took it upon himself to drive from Frostproof, Florida to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to try out for the Fan Controlled Football League. Making a name for himself in the FCF, The Spring League, and the Hub football training camp, Cecil was invited to the NFL Alumni Academy, which led to an invitation to join the Vegas Vipers at the upcoming XFL training camp. Cecil talks about making the most of his opportunities, and what the XFL can expect from his presence in Arlington. This episode is called “Arlington Opportunity.” It features a young football player who is getting an opportunity to go further in the realm of professional football, and what he has to do to best take advantage of this opportunity. Spring League is here, Kyrie is the best heel, Matty's hand looks like Freddy Krueger's.
My guest for Episode #157 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Denis Crawford, a historian who is the author of books including his latest, The Life and Teams of Johnny F. Bassett: Maverick Entrepreneur of North American Sports. Episode page, video, transcript and more: https://markgraban.com/mistake157 Denis M. Crawford holds a PhD in American Studies, teaches at Youngstown State University, and is managing editor for “The Coffin Corner,” the official magazine of the Professional Football Researchers Association. He is an honorary member of the Bucs UK, the largest American football fan club in the United Kingdom, and a 2010 inductee to the Bucs UK Hall of Fame. Denis is also my uncle — even though he's just a few years older than me. In today's episode, Denis shares his “favorite mistake” story about not taking advantage of sports journalism internships in college. Why did his young “arrogance” get in the way of his dream of becoming a play-by-play announcer? We talk about what Denis learned and we talk about some of the mistakes made by Johnny Bassett as a professional sports owner. Part of the conversation looks back at the original USFL — and some of the battles between Bassett and Donald Trump (then-owner of the New Jersey Generals). With the new USFL launching this week, will the league manage to prevent its past mistakes? We also talk about questions and topics including: Bassett's biggest mistakes? And I ask this realizing that he was generally the most successful owner in failed leagues… When he owned the Toronto Toros, what was the worst mistake that he could have made? Mistakes in overpaying players behind budgets or salary caps… Bassett seemed determine to avoid repeating mistakes from the WFL (and WHA) — how did the USFL end up undermining that? Trump the businessman… decided to move the league to the fall to compete directly with the NFL Did you get to read the letter Bassett sent to Trump? You got to interview Wayne Gretzky and some other Hall of Fame athletes — did you have jitters? A new version of the USFL (or at least a rebranded Spring League) will launch April 16 2022… If the original USFL didn't learn from Johnny Bassett's WFL mistakes, will they avoid repeating the same mistakes this time? How have leagues like MLS and the WNBA avoided the fate of Bassett's leagues and others? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/favorite-mistake/support

The USFL rulebook is here, another sports entity is trying to take down the USFL in court and we are STILL trying to figure out how to “save” the CFL on this week's episode of The Markcast. Farhan Lalji of TSN, Andrew Murray of XFL, USFL and CFL News Hub along wide William Stanback of the Montreal Alouettes join us for this week of the show, which is decidedly a very PRO-USFL podcast. ;)The USFL players have arrived for training camps in Birmingham, Alabama and the USFL has released their playbook for their 2022 season. Lots of carried over NFL rules but a few tweaks and inspirations from spring and alternative football leagues past makes an intriguing rulebook which should be fascinating to see hit the field when the USFL kicks off in April.Another legal battle for the USFL is on the horizon with the Carolina Panthers of the NFL taking umbrage to the USFL (actually The Spring League's) ownership of the “Michigan Panthers” trademark and have filed an opposition agains The Spring League LLC. Should fans of the USFL be worried? Why won't people just leave the USFL alone?? We discuss.TSN's Farhan Lalji makes a return appearance on the program to chat both USFL and CFL football. The CFL fanbase is in hysterics over the notion of potentially, hypothetically changing the Canadian Football game to 4 downs, but how likely is that REALLY? We chat with Farhan and also get his thoughts on what needs to be done, if not going to 4 downs, to help propel and grow the CFL game. Farhan also shares his thoughts on the USFL's return, or relaunch however the courts want us to refer to it as, and what effects if any he sees the USFL having on the Canadian Football game either this year, or in the years to come.Andrew Murray of USFL/XFL/CFL News Hub stops by the show to give his thoughts on the USFL relaunch thus far, we also break down the recently released USFL rulebook and talk about the tweaks and oddities. We also break down the Carolina Panthers opposition against The Spring League's ownership of the “Michigan Panthers” trademark as well as give an update to the “real” USFL v. USFL lawsuit. Finally William Stanback of the Montreal Alouettes sits down to preview the upcoming CFL season, talk about his off-season workout routine and his love for his family who will be joining him in Montreal for the upcoming 2022 CFL season.0:00 The Markcast Show Promo2:29 Show Intro, Guest Lineup7:46 Farhan Lalji, CFL Insider Interview, CFL Marketing, Moving to 4 Downs, USFL36:29 Andrew Murray, USFL / XFL / CFL News Hub USFL Interview39:40 “Real” USFL v. While the NBA has the "G-League" and Baseball has the Minor League system, we always seem to forget about Football. Professional Football players don't seem to have an avenue to develop when they no longer are on an NFL roster or a CFL roster. That is why The Spring League is so important for them to gain exposure. Today I have Ezra Levine who happens to be the COO and CFO of The Spring League joining me for a discussion about the league and how it was formed.
