Temple and CFL Hall of Famer Henry Burris joined us on The Scoop this week to share memories from his career on North Broad Street as a record-setting quarterback out of Spiro, Oklahoma.   Burris, who recently returned to his alma mater back in May to serve as the Klein College of Media and Communication's commencement speaker at the Liacouras Center, also established himself as a television personality in Canada on CTV Morning Live and TSN and said he used his Temple education to feel comfortable being on camera as a host and analyst.   On the field, Burris passed for 7,495 yards and 49 touchdowns against some great competition in the Big East from 1993 to 1996 and earned his way into the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent and saw stints with the Green Bay Packers, where he backed up Brett Favre and Doug Pederson. The relationship he forged with Pederson allowed him to land a spot on his Jacksonville Jaguars staff in 2022 as an offensive quality control coach. This season, he'll be the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Florida A&M.    In the CFL, Burris became a three-time Grey Cup champion, a two-time Grey Cup MVP and a two-time recipient of the CFL's Most Outstanding Player award -- and it all started with a tryout that had Burris throwing to guys off the street wearing slacks and Stacy Adams dress shoes.   Burris shared that story and many more on this week's podcast, which also includes some football and basketball recruiting updates and information on how you can vote in the OwlScoop Summertime Madness food bracket championship between Richie's and Maxi's.

But this Hall of Fame Wide Receiver became a household name with one of the most iconic nicknames in sports, yet he was relatively unknown off the field.  Ryan, Channing, and Fred sit down with Hall of Fame wide receiver Calvin “Megatron” Johnson to learn more about the man Ryan refers to as the “urban legend” of football. Calvin Johnson, better known as Megatron, and one of the most iconic Wide Receivers to ever play the game talks about his Hall of Fame career despite losing seasons and how he overcame the 0-16 year in Detroit, purpose and passion for promoting cannabis and healing while sharing stories of his family, opening up about some of his dangerous hobbies and reveals why he had to retire from the NFL before marriage.   Valuing consistency over talent and understanding that those who have both consistency and talent are the unique ones as Calvin explains his journey to the guys and shares the reason of why he retired before getting married. The man who was once the most feared receiver in the league has turned his football-based lifestyle into a way of life focused around his family and other endeavors. Calvin explains walking away from the game at an early age was a move he doesn't regret although it shocked the football world, he respects the game and describes how he continues to bring a level of excellence to every facet of his life based on his mental approach to the game. Thirty-five years after retiring from the NFL, Joe Klecko received the long-overdue news last month that he will be enshrined this summer in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, becoming the first former Temple player to receive the honor.   In a special episode of The Scoop, Klecko shared his remarkable life story with OwlScoop.com, one that started from modest beginnings in a working-class neighborhood in Chester, Pennsylvania just outside Philadelphia and grew to include stints as a truck driver, a Joe Frazier sparring partner, a semi-pro star with the Aston Knights and plenty of moments along the way in which he needed some encouragement from the most important people in his life, including his wife, Debbie, and the late former Temple coach Wayne Hardin, before he went on to a 12-year NFL career.   A self-described timid kid who initially walked away from the sport of football as a freshman at St. James High School for Boys, Klecko eventually honed the skill and strength to get the best of future Hall of Fame offensive linemen like Anthony Munoz and Dwight Stephenson and drop fellow Hall of Famers like Jim Kelly and Dan Marino en route to collecting 78 career sacks and four Pro Bowl nods as a member of the Jets' famed “New York Sack Exchange.”   Among countless anecdotes, Klecko recalled memories of everything from living at Temple's Johnson Hall to studying and getting the best of players like Marino to reflecting upon what it meant to see his son, Dan, play at his alma mater and go on to win three Super Bowls.
